Speculation ran rampant and wild last week that Walter Mazzarri was seriously considering offers from abroad and that he might be the latest one-and-done manager at Inter.
However, the 52-year-old confirmed he will be back at Appiano Gentile next season and outlined his plans for the future.
There was a surprise announcement of sorts as Mazzarri indicated that the team will play with four defenders instead of his preferred three-man backline.
"I'd like to be able to play with four at the back and a holding midfielder," he said, according to the club's official website. "It's the most important signing for us to think about, with a view to playing four across the back as well.
"To give you an idea of the sort of player, I mean, but someone we wouldn't be able to get, take Luiz Gustavo."
Mazzarri admitted that his first year on the Nerazzurri hot seat took its toll, but believes the squad will take a major step forward next season.
"We were very inconsistent and that's something we have to work on. We'll try to learn from it so that we don't go through the same thing next year.
"I see a lot of positives to take from this season, we've laid some good foundations to build on next year."
Mazzarri then went on to address the criticism over the way he handled Javier Zanetti's last few matches with the club.
The legendary captain was an unused substitute in his final Derby della Madonnina and was not picked from the start in his last home game versus Lazio.
"The fans did not understand my decision to pick Zanetti," Mazzarri said. "They were thinking about the old Inter that was coming to an end and I was focusing on getting Inter back into Europe."
The Nerazzurri achieved their goal of qualifying for the Europa League, but will need to improve on their fifth-placed finish if Mazzarri is to gain the full trust of the supporters.
An efficient and organized summer transfer campaign where the club's business is taken care of early instead of panicking late in the window would go a long way in alleviating some of those fears.
