Inter - Siena: Scudetto or Bust

By: Johonna | May 10th, 2008

trophy2(queue the action movie music)
This Sunday Inter host Siena for a game that may be the culmination of a whole season, and, perhaps, our final test.

After 36 league, 8 Champions League, and 6 Coppa Italia games, almost half of our original starting team is injured (Dacourt, Samuel, Cordoba, Ibrahimovic, Figo, Chivu) but we are still on track for our 16th scudetto. We may be more limping forward than the sprint that characterized last year’s race, but it is the limp of the triumphant soldier, gallantly leaving the field of battle after bravely winning a hard-fought war.

Ok, so maybe not. None the less, we are still in it and can take the scudetto tomorrow if we keep our wits about us.

The Giant Killers

Siena badgeSiena had a shaky start to the season, and at one time, had a real worry of relegation. They have now heaved themselves up to a comfortable mid-table position (12, with 42 points) by pulling off such stunners as a 3-0 win over Roma and last weeks 1-0 surprise over Juve.

La Gazzetta dello Sport thinks Baretta will play 4-3-2-1:
Manninger
Ficagna / Portanova / Loria / De Ceglie
Vergassola / Codrea / Galloppa
Kharja / Locatelli
Maccarone (who was in training today after all)

And I have no reason to doubt them.

When asked about the game ahead, Mancini had this to say:

“I think they [Siena] can play with more tranquility now that they’re safe. The dangers are in facing a team that has nothing to lose. They will play to win the game. It will depend on us. If we do our job well we can create many chances to do well.”

Too true. I will depend on us.

Here is what happened last time we met:

Lets hope the game does not go that way again. Don’t get me wrong, I will always take a win, but I hate to do it with such controversy. I want to bury Siena in such a way that no one can say a word. In fact, lets hope it goes a bit more like it did last year:

What we bring to the field

training may 9

Mancini has called up 19 players:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar.

Defenders: Zanetti, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Rivas.

Midfielders: Stankovic, Jimenez, Vieira, Cambiasso, Maniche, Pelé, Cesar.

Strikers: Cruz, Crespo, Suazo, Balotelli.

although Stankovic’s fitness will have a final evaluation tomorrow.

To say this is due or die is an understatement. Even if it is true that we only need to secure 3 points in these last 2 games - we will never hear the end of it if we miss this second chance at security.

On top of all this, there are the usual distractions.

Figo is having difficulties with animal rights groups: the Libero newspaper published that he purposefully ran over a black cat near the training pitch as he thought it was bringing the team bad luck. Figo has vehemently denied it and is threatening legal action unless the paper apologizes.

Spanish papers are reporting that Inter is preparing a deal where we would swap Ibra for Samuel Eto’o.

But who has time for any of that nonsense?

So, let’s pull up our shorts, tuck in our shirts, and bring this scudetto home once and for all. There is no doubt we can beat Siena so there should be no doubt that we will.

Now everyone sing along:

Domani, Ragazzi, vincerà e saremo campioni ancora.

FORZA INTER CAMPIONI D’ITALIA

From an unbiased opinion, the culmination of lack of team unity, arrogance, and procrastination has prevented Inter from wrapping this thing up like a month ago.
It blew my mind how Mancini and Morratti were already talking about a Siena victory before they even played it. Not to mention fighting over who takes a penalty kick? Wow, it will be no easy task to wrap something up next weekend that could have easily been settled oh so long ago.

    Poor Matrix.

But not really though. When you go around talking shit, and acting like a fool on the field and off, it comes back to bite you in the ass.

It pains me to do this but I agree with KJ.

Inter are not a squadra, but a team made up players for themselves.

What a final stretch though. It has been exciting.

    Its all over for Inter

Inter have become what they were a few years back …. There is no controll at inter, no love …. Just hate between the players

Mancini, Viera, Figo, Adriano … all must go, if inter want to be good next season

I agree Inter is a club with its fair share of problems. It starts from Mancio right through to the players. Can’t blame injuries becasue EVERY team endures them. There have been some questionable decisions made and tactics used in games that were must wins. Win lose or draw, I don’t expect Mancio to be back next season.

    but…

The season is not over yet. Inter, nor Roma has won shit yet. Both clubs still have to go out and win on Sunday. Roma cannot lose or draw. Inter has to win or can lose outright with a Roma loss or draw. Both clubs are playing away to clubs that in must win situations if they want to remain in the top flight.

Roma fans don’t go chalking up your 4th Scudetto just yet just yet. You haven’t won fuck all and its no gurantee you’ll beat Catania.

To be honest I have no clue what to expect come Sunday. Anything can happen. Am I confident? Not gonna lie, given out track record… No. But its not over. At the very least this is how the championship should be decided. On the last day… drama drama… and it makes for good Calcio.

Paolo we aren’t chalking anything up.

There are no guarantees on Sunday’s.

    So good luck.

Now with no Cuper, you guys are feeling good eh?

A little Moratti Ghirardi love fest?

    Incridible…

oh and might i add… that penalty should not have been called… it was. Not using hindsight, Materazzi should not have taken it. 100% predictable what was going to happen. I stood up put my hands on my knees and half watched. When Materazzi placed the ball i said he is going to hit low and to the right and it will be stopped. I knew where it was going, anyone really think Manninger didn’t?! The shot had to be perfect and powerful and it wasn’t.

Anyhow, a grand tale should be told Sunday. The question is who is going to get to tell it? I have squashed my long weekend plans for this 38th and final round of the season. It better be worth it for me to have done so!!

    FORZA INTER!!

I never understood why left footed players dont use the in step and put it in the left hand corner.

Keepers follow the hips, and when you use your in step it fucks them up.

    Either way, bravo marco.

Maybe someone could explain to me the “Cuper being fired is some kind of conspiracy” stuff… I was feeling incredibly confident WITH Cuper on the Parma bench. They’ve been absolutely horrible, he was sitting some of their best young players, and he’s the only person who is worse than Mancini in a one-game setting.

I like him, I had nothing against him when he was at Inter and I was really sorry to read in today’s Gazzetta that he’s so miserable and sad but his career is almost comical. Watch the video of his chest thumps before 5 May. You can tell it just looks different than it normally did. He was terrified… he didn’t have the balls to start Serena over Gresko (like he had done in the Roma match at San Siro) and he failed like he always does…

Cuper being sacked = bad for Inter

    Has anyone looked at this:

IF Inter win … they win serie A … and catania stay up … If Parma and Roma win …. Roma wins serie A … and parma stays up ….. so much to play for this weekend …. not to mention the 4th CL spot!!!! Massive weekend in calcio

I have no idea honestly what’s happening. Stefan, you’re an idiot. I can’t b elieve I’m saying this but KJ is right on. Roma’s a good squad but they lack killer instinct. I would say Cuper being sacked for Parma is better than him staying, because now they will just be completely disorganized.

Looking forward to this weekend, the Viola, Roma, Inter, Milan, Catania, Parma, Torino, Udinese, Empoli, all fighting like hell? And Samp-Juve is never a bad match either…..looks like it’ll be one hell of an entertaining finish.

    Bets on what happens?
I predict Inter wins the scudetto, Fiorentina get that 4th spot, and Parma and Catania join Livorno in Serie B 2007-2008. Juve, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina and Milan, Udinese, and Sampdoria is a very strong European delegation.

i’m not sure what was funnier:

Matrix diving in the box, face-down on his knees, ass in the air, only to block Cruz’s sure goal…

or Matrix stepping up to take a spot kick, wearing his “super-champion” wristbands and covered with rainbow-brite tattoos, only to miss.

    this sunday should be interesting.

Do you guys think Materazzi will start on Sunday? I’ve been bitching about him for a few weeks now and of course the Siena game was horrific, but I think Mancini will be too scared to start with a Burdisso/Chivu or even Rivas/Chivu. I hope he doesn’t do the AcMilan thing and bench Maxwell. I would say he’s the most underrated player on our team right now. Personally I like the idea of Rivas/Chivu, but I think Mancini will be “cautious” and stick with Materazzi/Burdisso. What do you guys think?

And midfield: Cambiasso is out, so Zanetti, Vieira, (one more), and Jimenez. Sticking with the Mater/Burdi defense, I guess Chivu (if fit) will take the spot. I really hope it’s not Maniche. Pele would be interesting. Perhaps Dejan - does anyone have news on his injury?

Chivu is definitely out for Sunday… it’ll probably be Matrix/Burdisso at the back. In midfield, I would imagine Mancini will start Stankovic if at all possible. The papers seem to think that he’s going to be ready…

I’m sure this is going to be an unpopular opinion but if we’re going to use a flat midfield again, I’d rather leave Jimenez on the bench and use Cesar, at least that would allow Maxwell to push all the way forward on the left. We’ll probably go with a diamond, though, with Jimenez up top, JZ on the bottom, Vieira on the right and Stankovic on the left…

“Inter phone taps found but little has been released so far. It started with wiretaps investigating drug trafficking regarding sporting agent Donato Brescia.

Apparantly a bunch of Intertristi were caught betting on their own scudetto “triumph” last year (Sinisa, Mancini, Zanetti).”

Will Inter legislate their way out of this like Inter/Milan did with plusvalenze and their financial irregularities?

While I admit that taking the scudetto to the very last game adds to the drama, I would have preferred victory over Siena.

Earlier in the season it did feel more like a cohesive team. Perhaps the lack of cohesion is caused by all the injuries. I don’t know if Suazo will ever get used to playing with other strikers.

BTW–I like Siena but Manniger is now on my enemies list :-)
