Sampdoria, Il Ritorno
By: Johonna | January 24th, 2009
What: Inter v Sampdoria
When: Sunday, Jan 25, 8:30pm local time (11:30am pacific, 2:30pm eastern).
Where: San Siro, Milan
How to Watch: “live” on Fox Soccer Channel; streaming here or here.
This game officially begins the second half of the season. Inter went to Genoa to play Sampdoria in the first game of the season, ending in a frustrating 1-1 draw. Last time Sampdoria came to Milan, Inter crushed them. Well, to be fair, Ibra crushed them, but Figo got one in too (see how happy he is in the picture). In any event, Inter put 3 past Samp’s keeper and managed to keep a clean sheet. Without a doubt, a second result like this would make all Inter fans ecstatic. I think, though, we are all starting to see that last season has no bearing on this one. Really, I think it is best if we just forget about our past glories and concentrate on today. I think we have seen that if you dont keep a close eye on the game at hand, it can come around and bite you in the rear. As always, this game is a must-win if we wish to continue our fight for the scudetto.
Just for fun, here is what happened last September:
THEM
Unfortunately, the Samp page here on the Offside appear to be another casualty of real life (anyone want to blog?). Sampdoria have been in a bit of a slump lately. They had a small break last week when they knocked Udinese out of the Coppa Italia on penalties. In the league, though, they haven’t won a game since mid December when they put two past Reggina. Sampdoria’s poor form has seen them slip to 15th place.
Mazzarri has called up 19 players
Portieri: Castellazzi, Mirante.
Difensori:. Campanella, Gastaldello, Raggi.
Centrocampisti: Delvecchio, Dessena, Donati, Franceschini, Padalino, Palombo, Pieri, Sammarco, Stankevicius, Ziegler.
Attaccanti: Bellucci, Marilungo, Mustacchio, Pazzini.
As you can see, Cassano is not on the list. He has been ruled out due to “neck problems.” We shouldn’t celebrate yet, though, as it looks like Pazzini will be making his Sampdoria debut. I am sure he will want to prove his worth to Mazzarri and the fans. He may be dangerous.
Much more worrying for Sampdoria is their defense. Only three players are available so it is thought that Palombo will drop back and cover. Palombo does not seem worried, saying:
“The Coach knows that he can put me wherever he wants and I’ll do my best. I have played as a defender in other occasions, so there are no problems. Of course it will take me a little bit to get accustomed to marking an opponent again, but when Mazzarri explains tactics I hear it all.”
Hopefully he will provide some gaping holes for Adriano to waltz through. Really, I saw the game against Roma a couple weeks ago, and Sampdoria do not look all that good.
US
After suffering a bit of a setback last week, Inter are looking to at least maintain their tenuous grasp on first place. We are, of course, without Ibra for this game – he is suspended for accumulating too many yellow cards. In addition:
Patrick Vieira, Marco Materazzi and Francesco Bolzoni will miss the match through injury, while Nelson Rivas, Nicolas Burdisso, Olivier Dacourt, Luis Jimenez, Victor Obinna and Mario Balotelli have been omitted for technical reasons.
Technical reasons… What the heck does that mean? That they technically suck? Or that they are technically going to another team? Ok then, who does that leave?
Mourinho has called up basically the rest of the squad:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Maxwell, Maicon, Samuel, Chivu, Santon.
Midfielders: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Quaresma.
Strikers: Adriano, Cruz, Crespo.
There has been some speculation that, in the absence of Ibra, Mou will revert to a 4-3-3 tomorrow. Mourinho is being cagey about his line-up, saying:
“The important thing is to play well as a team and do it well. If this happens, one or two strikers will play, or Adriano and another striker or two wingers. Attitude is the important thing, and like I have just said, playing like a team. We can win the match if we do this.”
So, we will all just have to wait until tomorrow to see.
I am not watching the Juve Fiorentina game so I dont know if Juve have managed to close the gap. Really, it shouldn’t matter. We need to play like we are 6 points behind instead of the doodie that passed for football last week. The Coppa game was better and Adriano showed that he still has it in him to lead an attack. Boy, if ever Quaresma and Crespo were to shine, though, this is the time. We really need a couple goals from them.
It looks like Cordoba and Maxi are back in the mix. Really, the fact that they did not play midweek may have been more about rotation than bad form. Still, the back line did concede 3 goals (yikes) last week (it still hurts every time I write it).
So, lets all hope that Crespo remembers how to actually get the ball in the net (please oh please) and that Samuel and Cordoba are back to their November form.
It is not over yet. Even if Juve win and we slip to second for the night – we are not dead yet. Lets try to keep a positive attitude, there is the whole second half of the season to go.
In the words of our suave Portugese leader:
“Quale pressione? Pressione di che cosa? Non capisco… “.

I dont know if Quaresma is suited to playing left mid. His work rate has been better than expected though. He might lack the necessary tactical sense.
You’d think we have enough hard working players in midfield to make room for him, but we’re not really in a position to experiment.

Adri’s been handed a three match ban for that punch. Just when I thought things were looking up for him.
I bet he’s getting REALLY drunk tonight . . .

You’re kidding me… what happened with the punch? I wasn’t able to see the game.

3 matches?! A bit harsh I would think.
Just like Mourinho’s red card was harsh. If there wasn’t any truth to what Mourinho said to him, then the ref wouldn’t have gotten so offended.Anyhow, it’s done so there isn’t much we could do.
AS for RQ. I would like to see him play more too. I personally would like to see him play the 1 in a 4-3-1-2. I think that is our best formation.
Mancini. GET RID OF HIM. He is useless, clueless and confused. Did not like the signing from the get go and hate it even more now.

and if i hear, or read, one more thing about Beckham’s very ordinary, not so special 1st Serie A goal (Milan’s 4th of the game), I might throw up.
He wasn’t even going to continue to make that run until he realized Seedorf had pushed the ball into wide open space, then it was just a smash and hope that worked out. Big deal. Every news show made it much bigger news than it was, especially the guys on FSC.
This is just my rant for the day.

Paolo, I think it is just everyone is so surprised that he could still do it.

I was expecting a ban, I don’t know if I expected 3 games. At least 1 for sure.
Don’t blame him though, I prob would have done similar… have done similar.
The trick is for him to keep his nose clean for 2 weeks.

I know Johonna, it’s just a bit much. He is a very average footballer with a good strike. My Milanista friends are quite annoying. A year and a half ago they would never give Beckham credit for anything, now they OOH & AWE every time he makes a 3 foot pass and make it seem like he is the only one who could have done that. His goal was simply that, just a goal. He hit it with power and hoped for the best and it went in. A dime a dozen goal from that spot. I can gurantee it you makes several top 10 Goals of the Week segmesnts over the next week and will be in the top 5 even though it does not deserve to be.

As for Adriano, it was a short jab. It is not like he wound up and cracked him one. Definitley not worthy of a 3 game suspension. I thought he would get one for sure, maybe two, but not three.
I can’t really blame him either. He was getting mauled and knocked around all night and he took a minute to return the favour as if to say “F-Off Already!” It was just that type of game and it was brought on by Samp from the opening whistle. They had every intention of playing that physical.
Too bad Adriano has to sit for three. His last two performances were giving me a glimmer of hope and he would have continued to start. Ithink the mroe he plays the better he’ll be.
It seems they like to set a precedent with Adriano. Has anyone been suspended for diving since he was banned for 2 matches 2 years ago? Three games was a bit harsh in my opinion, especially for the type of game that was played.

The giudice sportivo’s reasoning appears to be that he would have been given a straight red had any of the officials seen the punch, and that a straight red for violent conduct generally means a three game ban (remember what happened to Muntari for the incident with Tedesco).

Thanks ursus! It is the punishment we are going to have to accept. Based on the reasoning, it is justified.
Just very ill timed for Adriano, who seemed to be building on some decent performances.
I still don’t completely blame him and wouldn’t tie it in to all the problems he has been having.
As MAD mentioned, he has done something similar, as have I and in return I have it done to me. Just part of the sport some days.

Coinsidering the type of game that was played, considering that Samp players had whacked our players in the face about 7 or 8 times with only 1 caution to show for it.
If Muntari does it and he’s wearing blue and black it’s 3 games. I noticed that they aren’t getting any suspensions.
Anyway, rumors are heating up about Crespo and Dacourt. It’s entirely possible, if there is a grain of truth in any of these rumors, that they might go on the last day of the winter market. IF there is any truth here, then clubs might be trying to gauge how cheap they can get these players by waiting until the last possible minute.
In a way we might be better of than Roma in this case, everyone knows that they have to get rid of Panucci, so everyone’s going to come in cheap.

Interesting editorial about ref errors and the Italian love of conspiracy theories on C4. Here is the bit I think is the most telling:
What’s more if we take a detailed look at refereeing mistakes this season, we find that while Fiorentina have been wronged the most [losing seven points], their scapegoat, the big teams have hardly been dealt any favours. Inter are two points better off, Juventus one, and Milan are actually three points worse off. If there is a conspiracy, it’s helping two of Serie A’s bottom clubs Lecce and Bologna who have benefitted to the tune of six and five points respectively.

Johonna, I love that part. Now we know that it’s Lecce and Bologna who’re bribing the refs! They’re just clever enough to conceal their deeds by staying just above the relegation zone.

Very interesting. Just proves how completely absurd all the conspiracy talk is. I understand Fiorentina’s frustrations though.

Can we appeal Adriano’s 3 match ban?

“prove”, dave? how exactly does an article that contains no specific references or data to back up any of those claims pass as ‘proof’?

I dont think there are grounds to, although the club may just as a matter of course.
It was stupid for him to do.
I hope the “technical” reasons for Balotelli not playing are dealt with soon. With Adri out, he is more important than ever.

lamagica, I have just a quick question.
how exactly does an opinion of a romanista that contains no specific references or data to back up any of their claims pass as ‘proof’ either?
That article proves exactly what La Gazzetta’s re-written table (last season) proves. It also proves what the absurd cries from some fan bases proves. That is NOTHING.
Certainly don’t hear you complain when Bribing the Ref, as you blantantly like to put it, works a two goal swing to Roma’s advantage.

lamagica, I agree with the article as far as the amount of points decided by ref’s mistakes. Just like you agree with those conspiracy thoeries. The article itself didnt prove anything. The proof is in the matches I’ve seen where the refs have clearly changed the result, which agree with the numbers in the article.
Except with Bologna and Lecce. I havent watched them much.

Jose Mourinho does not want a golden tapir.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg8aoAGQD8o
Striscia la Notizia tried to give Jose a Golden Tapir award for the 3-1 drubbing Atalanta gave Inter. Jose was not interested in the fun and games.
He may well have taken the thing had Staffelli tried to get him at work. His family does not like publicity and I bet Mou was not happy to have these guys show up at his home.

what are the chances we get to see rq wednesday? id say 5%

We will have a lot of players who won’t be able to go on Wednesday. Samuel and Chivu will probably not be available so we will have the pleasure of seeing Burdisso again, joy that it is.
Adriano obviously won’t be available so I guess we see Obinna or Crespo with Ibra.
And if you were curious about how much value Inter, through analysis and bids made to them from other clubs, places on the players on the roster (Ibra tops the list at 45 mil euro) then go here:
http://tuttomercatoweb.com/inter/?action=read&idnotizia=1674
The most interesting thing was how cheaply Santon is valued at (50,000 euro). If I was another Serie A club, I would buy him now at his current cost and laugh all the way to the bank. Kid already showed that he can play Serie A – at least against Roma and Samp and held his own. Cheapest starting left fullback in the league.

Is Marco still hurt? Rivas? Can Santon play in the center? Anyone?
Brian, maybe if RQ bitches in the media he’ll get a start. Worked for Mancini. But seriously, if Mancini can play 2nd striker why cant RQ? I say put him in
Santon stock has shot through the roof. Maxwell’s got his work cut out.
If I were Manchester City I would take that Kaka $$$ straight to Moratti for Ibra. I might sound crazy but I think he would turn it down.

Dave: Yes, Marco is still hurt.
And, much to my horror, being very cagey about a possible move away from Inter on his blog. He is trying to kill me, I know it. One more week and I can breath again.
