Back On Top: Inter 1 – 0 Sampdoria

Adriano scores the winning goal
That was bloody. Still, we managed to take full points, and with these three very important points, find ourselves back at the top of the table – at least until Wednesday. The game saw 6 yellows (4 for them, 2 for us), 1 red (for Mourinho), a stupid punch (by Adriano), and a split head (Muntari). There were calls for penalties, injuries (2 a piece), and 3 gut-wrenching injury scares (JC, Zanetti, and Cambiasso). Probably the worst thing, though, was that Inter only managed to score one crumby goal. Even after Mazzarri was forced to take off his last defender, Inter could not score on a squad comprised almost entirely of midfielders. Very disappointing. Highlights after the jump.

.

.

Alright, so it was not all horror and blood. Inter did have a few good moments, but then Adriano got tired. As we had used most of our substitutions to replace injured players (Samuel at the half, then Chivu at towards the end), he was stuck on the field and had to make the best of it. The stats show that Inter had the lion’s share of shots, and that we were the more attacking side:

Inter v Samp stats

.
.
Whatever attacking force we may have had was totally gone by the 70th minute and the last 20 minutes were a slog. Figo helped some — it was nice to have someone who can actually do something with a dead ball for a change (what the hell was that Stankovic/Adriano free-kick lunacy?), but it was just not enough. Although I am quite happy that Adriano was able to actually score, his antics off the field, and now on as well, are just getting too distracting.

Adri could have been a contenderYep, Adriano is in trouble yet again. This time, he punched Samp defender Ganiele Gastaldello in the gut. The ref didn’t see it (I didn’t either until the super slo-mo replay), but the eagle eye of the camera did. Adri has been handed a three-match ban for his asinine behavior. That will give him time to go play the friendly for Brazil, I suppose (Dunga also wants JC, Maicon, and half of AC Milan’s squad). I find that I have less and less patience for Adriano. I say, lets get what we can (about 18 million euro according to TMW) and find another striker who is a little more serious about his job. Adriano is just too much drama.

Speaking of drama, Jose had his first Italian sending off and will have to watch the Catania match from the stands (unless there are some large clothes hampers in the dressing room). He was not happy with the refereeing in the game (was anyone?), and especially angry at the phantom fouls that were being called against Inter. His take is:

“I was sent off because I told the referee that he had fear. There had been so many players booked in the first half. Stankovic had made a perfect tackle. I would prefer not to say much about the referee although I think he had little experience and he feared someone.”

[On a side note, Jose recently gave a nice little interview with ESPN. Nothing momentous, but it is in English so there are no strange translation issues to deal with. Check it out.]

Alright, back to the carnage. Samuel and Chivu came off injured during the match. According to Inter’s web page today, Chivu has strained his adductor muscles and Samuel has strained his flexors. I have no idea what this means, except for that we may be having a crisis in defense. Again.

Yep, Marco is still injured with some thigh thing, while Burdisso and Maxwell were sent home with the flu today. Add that to Chivu and Samuel, and it looks like we may either see the elusive Rivas, or that Cambiasso will find his way back into defense again for Catania. But we will have time for that particular piece of stress tomorrow.

Mancini
made a rare start on Sunday. I sincerely hope that he is not the best we can do in that position. Except for a small hissy fit, he was almost non-existent. So much so, that until I got to this point of the blog, I had almost forgotten that he played at all. He wants to go, I dont see a use for him, lets sell him on and put that in our striker fund. Between Adriano and Mancini, Dacourt and Crespo, we could most definitely pick up a Tevez or two.

For me, Sampdoria’s man of the match was Marius Stankevicius – he was just everywhere for them. On our side, though, we have Stanko-licous, who also played his heart out (if only that shot off the crossbar had been 6-inches lower!). Maicon was his normal fabulous self, and Cordoba had a couple great tackles. For his first Serie A game, Santon was not too shabby – clearly a little rattled by Samp’s physicality (to put it mildly), but he did an ok job. Still, my man of the match has got to be Julio Cesar. He didn’t have a whole lot to do, but he stayed awake, played through the pain, and saved us from Dessena’s last minute shot, ensuring we won all three points.

And so, I will leave you with Julio Cesar, the saver of bacon.

FORZA INTER

That game was truly ugly. God Bless JC at the end. However, if we can play that ugly and still get 3 points thats a good sign. Gotta give credit to Sampadoria though. They defended very well, and that was their plan from the get go. 2 guys on Maicon, 2 guys on Stank. Rough up the rest of the guys. People say we are Ibra dependent, but it looks like we are Maicon dependent. The only way we scored was when he broke a tackle and got a good cross in.
I agree with Mourinho on a lot of what he said in that game. All the horrible refereeing in the other games that no one talks about, but when Inter is involved its drama non stop. 6 minutes of added time?? What the fudge was the ref thinking?
    In the end we overcame.
    Forza Inter

    Oh, and I almost forgot.

    Happy Birthday Jose Mourinho.

He is 46 years old today (Jan 26).

For me, Maicon was our best player. JC’s save was probably worth man of the match though.

We’re having trouble playing the ball through midfield. We played way too many aimless long balls. Luckily Maicon can create chances basically by himself.

Nico and Maxwell better get over the flu and train tomorrow. If not we’re screwed. If Cambiasso drops back who takes his spot? Zanetti? Muntari? Dejan? I think Jimi may have to play behind the strikers and Stankovic filling Cambiasso’s role. Or a 4-3-3.

Mou should “technically” think about playing Balo. Im “technically” tired of wasting set pieces

That second last question to Mourinho on ESPN is quite revealing. In his answer he says the reason he beat Man Utd before was because he had a fantastic team with Porto and, later, with Chelsea. Does Inter have a fantastic team? Haha, who knows. Mou sure doesn’t

At this point I’m having a hard time not saying that we are on the verge of a crisis. I know that word is flung around quite a bit by the media but I’m downright worried about our ability to win convincingly. Thankfully the league schedule is allowing us some leeway through these troubling times. I dunno, If we end up pulling through this year I’m going to have some MAD respect for Mou. Either way, Forza Inter…

Balotelli is not in the squad for Catania. Beppe Baresi (who will be replacing Mourinho for the evening) attributed the decision to a “disciplinary choice”. Obinna is also being left in Milan, so it looks very much like Ibra and Crespo up front.

please no. try rq. from that was posted in the last entry about values, it looks like rq is valued higher than julio cesar. lol there is no way that list is accurate. i am not entirely sure because i can’t read italian and i am feeling too lazy to translate.

The values are what the team put on the player, not necessarily what some other team will pay.

Inter value RQ at 25 million Euros because thats what they paid for him this past summer. If someone wants to get him, Inter would like their money back.

It’s not that the team doesn’t value Cesar, it’s just a starting place in case anyone wanted to deal. I’d be willing to bet that the club would sell RQ long before they sell Cesar, no matter the price tag.

WTF? So I will have a proper Catania post up tonight, but in the meantime…
Adriano is in the call-up list. Inter have made an appeal against his ban today. So, does he get to play during the appeal process? Crazy.

Here is the question Gregor was talking about:

    Q. Moving onto the Champions League, Manchester United, a team you know a lot about, and you’ve had a good record against them as well, both at Porto and with Chelsea. Does that give you confidence and how do you feel that you can win against them?

    A. With Porto when we beat them, we were European Champions; we had a fantastic team. With Chelsea we beat them so many times, because we were a fantastic team. We were champions this season; we won six domestic competitions. We beat them in the Premiership, in the Cup final, in the Carling Cup semi-finals. We were a fantastic team. Inter Milan is team from a completely different culture. We have our motivations, we have our dreams, but of course we realize the Man United team and the power they have. And we know that’ll be very, very difficult for us. And for them.

What do we take from this? Mourinho luuuuuuvs his old chelsea team, he has blissful memories of Porto, and he is getting disillusioned with Inter. Great. Three years of stability and now we get back on the coach a year merry-go-round. Well, maybe we will start winning and Mou will love us again.

I think that he’s trying to say that he’s confident, without giving them any locker room clippings to focus on.

And I think he’s also trying to warn the Inter players not to assume that the game is in the bag. He has to keep in mind the fact that the CL has not been our friend lately,

So, cautious optimism and a warning to the team. There could be, should I look hard enough, be a message to Moratti, what glorious things that could happen if Mo gets the team that he wants.

    That’s my take.

I’m not sure that he can play during the appeal. Rather, I think he is on the list in the (almost certainly) vain hope that it is successful. Given recent precedents (especially the Muntari case), I wouldn’t be surprised if the appeal was rejected before Inter takes the field in Catania.

And yes, a number of people think that Tevez would do very well at Inter.

From the Sampdoria performance, it is clear to me that we need more depth/talent in our forwards. I think our defense played pretty well but unless Ibra is on the pitch, our offense sucks. I can’t think of a striker better than Tevez (at least not a better one that we might actually get!).

All Argentineans should naturally drift towards Inter anyway :-)

    Yep appeal rejected.

I watched the video of Mo’s interview (soccernet.com). Something does seem tense about it all…really hope he’s not unhappy or something. Like Johonna, I would hate to return to the pre-Mancini revolving door policy re managers.

Mou has always scowled his way through interviews, hard to read from body language.

Lega president Antonio Matarrese hit out at those who have been overly critical of referees in their recent public utterances.

While admitting that the referees do make mistakes, he also warned those who criticise that they will be subject to punishments if they exaggerate.

“There’s someone, also amongst the coaches, who must start to understand that we’re in Italy,” commented the Lega chief.

When asked if he was referring in particular to Inter coach Jose Mourinho, Matarrese did not hesitate to confirm.”

Sorry to be dense, but what does he mean by remember we’re in Italy.

Ok, the rest of the comment explains what he meant by “remember we’re in Italy”:

“Mourinho is human too and when he makes a mistake, like all Italians, he has to pay. There is no immunity in Italian football. Nobody is ‘special’ in Serie A, everybody is on the same level here.”

:D Yes, it did initially read like ‘hush your mouth foreigner!’

Which knowing mou will go down like a warm cup of spit.

Really though, I’ve been marvelling at Mou’s good behaviour so far in italy, especially vis a vis referees. Then I remember he’s had nothing to complain about on that score. Now things are getting a bit fractious, will the angry paranoid side of his character so familiar from Portugal and England come more to the fore.
