Amsterdam LG Tournament: Inter v Sevilla and Ajax v Inter

By: Johonna | August 7th, 2008

Inter’s next test is the Amsterdam LG Tournament, against Sevilla then Ajax (see schedule below). Unfortunately, this will have to be a preview of both as I will be out of town this weekend with no access to the internet.

The format for this tournament is a bit strange in that every team does not play each other (Inter will not play Arsenal). The winner of the tournament is decided by point accumulation – points are awarded by winning a match (3 points) and scoring (1 point per goal). If two teams end up with the same number of points at the end of the game, the advantage will be given to the team that has scored the most goals. If there is still a tie, then the team who scored ealiest in their previous matches will be given the lead. So, it behooves us to score early and score often.

Schedual:

Friday 8 August
19:00 hours local time: FC Internazionale v Sevilla FC
21:15 hours local time: AFC Ajax v Arsenal FC

Saturday 9 August
19:00 hours local time: Arsenal FC v Sevilla FC
21:15 hours local time: AFC Ajax v FC Internazionale

Teams:

Manuel Jiménez Jiménez, the coach of Sevilla, has brought 21 players to Amsterdam:
Keepers: Javi Varas, Palop
Defenders: Cala, Crespo, David Prieto, Fernando Navarro, Squillaci, Konko, Mosquera, Dragutinovic
Midfielders: Adriano, Jesús Navas, Maresca, Renato, Capel, Romaric, Armenteros
Forwards: Chevantón, Koné, Luis Fabiano, Kanouté

[I think it is pretty funny that we also have a Jimenez, Adriano, and Crespo]

Marco van Basten, the new coach of Ajax, supposedly has a team of 28 at his disposal, but their web page has a squad list of considerably more (and I thought we had a lot of players!). Wikipedia had this list of 28:
Keepers: Stekelenburg, Vermeer, Gentenaar
Defenders: Silva, Oleguer, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, van der Wiel, Ogăraru, Slijngard
Midfielders: Lindgren, Emanuelson, Aissati, Gabri, de Jong, van der Heijden, Sarpong, Anita, Donald, Martina
Forwards: Bakircioglü, Huntelaar, Sulejmani, Suárez, Rommedahl, Leonardo, Schilder

Inter is traveling with 31 players:
Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 22 Paolo Orlandoni.

Defenders: 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Maxwell, 13 Maicon, 16 Nicolas Burdisso, 23 Marco Materazzi, 24 Nelson Rivas, 25 Walter Samuel; 26 Cristian Chivu, 37 Andrea Mei, 38 Luca Caldirola, 39 Davide Santon.

Midfielders: 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Luis Figo, 11 Luis Jimenez, 15 Olivier Dacourt, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 20 Muntari, 30 Pelé, 33 Amantino Mancini, 36 Francesco Bolzoni, 40 Alberto Gerbo.

Strikers: 8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 9 Julio Ricardo Cruz, 10 Adriano, 18 Hernan Crespo, 29 David Suazo, 45 Mario Balotelli.

Really, the only difference between these games and the Bayern game is that some of our players may finally be coming off injury. Cordoba, Ibrahimavic, Jimenez, Samuel, and Rivas trained with the squad today so may get a some play time this weekend. Cruz, Chivu, and Materazzi are still not training with the team and will probably remain in the stands. I have not found any update on Julio Cesar’s strain so I don’t know if he will play or not.

Matchups:

Apparently Sevilla is on a bit of a streak lately, scoring 20 goals and conceding none in five pre-season games. Sounds pretty formidable until you notice that three of those games were against regional sides. The only “big” teams they have met were Moscow Locomotive and AC Milan. Sevilla beat Moscow 3-0 (with a pretty amazing saved PK by the Sevilla keeper):

Sevilla also beat AC Milan (1-0), but the goal was a spectacularly headed-in own goal by Gattuso (povero Rino).

So, the actual stats are not as frightening as one might think. We can totally take these guys!

Ajax have been going through some shrinking pains recently, van Basten recently told four players that they were now training with the youth team (ouch), and a further four were told that although they can remain with the first team, there is almost no chance that they will actually see the field (double ouch). I am not sure, but I think that, to date, they have only played the two friendlies: one against Cardiff City (ended 0-0) and one against Sunderland. Ajax won that game 1-0, with a goal by Huntelaar. Ajax play Arsenal just after we play Seville on Friday so we can have a bit of a sneak peak before our game on Saturday. I think we can totally take these guys, too.

I know, Marco van Basten’s Dutch team at the Euros this year were very very good, and, like Jose, he is a new coach with something to prove. Still, he doesn’t have nearly the talent that were available for the Dutch National Team at Ajax, and with all of this squad shuffling, they just seem disorganized (and I bet it is bad for moral).

So, there you go. Two more tests stand before us and I think we are up to the challenge. We have (hopefully) some players coming off injury (Samuel, Cordoba, and Ibra, I am looking at you), and a very motivated team. I look forward to watching the Friday game (against Sevilla), but for Saturday, you are on your own. Hopefully one of you will watch it and post your impressions. I will be back Monday and will try to have a recap of the tournament up soon after.

Forza Inter

Inter win 1-0. For the whole preseason Inter has still conceded but one goal.

For anyone who missed it, this is Adriano’s goal:

What I like about this replay is that it stops the action at the strike of the ball so that one can clearly see how on sides he is.

A couple more thoughts about Adriano’s goal… you can even use the lines on the field to see the guy on the bottom of the picture late stepping forward and making a trap.

Also we had a couple near misses early and two shots off of the post (Javier and Zlatan) that could very easily have gone in making the score 4 or 5 nothing. Since we have been playing relatively tough teams this preseason and we have come out even or ahead, I am happy with the work and results, so far.

    Thanks for the recaps MAD!

I have a quick question. If if anyone has any info, it would be very much appreciated!

I plan on going to the Derby on September 28th. I have never purchased tickets for a Milan home game but have done so for Inter home games.

How does it work? For Inter home games, the tickets go on sale in the week that leads up to the match only. Is it the same for Milan matches? I prefer to purchase the tickets via the WEB and pick them up at will call.
If anyone has been to a Milan home game and purchsed the tickets thorugh the club, can you please let me what the process was. Thanks!!!!

I am aware of the level of difficulty to get tickets for the derby and am prepared to scalp the tix if necessary, so any info on that will be valuable as well. Thanks again!

In the past, it has generally worked the same way as it has for Inter (though they use different banks to deliver tickets, etc).

I would suggest monitoring the Milan website (as unpleasant as that may be) starting at least two weeks before the match. The Italian version is always the most up to date.

The other wild card is if the Osservatorio decides to impose some “security” restrictions (such as not allowing internet sales, or sales outside of Lombardia, etc.). If that happens, all bets are off.
And be prepared to resort to a scalper.

Or a good hotel concierge. Also, I have had good luck going to the tourist office (under the Galleria). We got tickets at time when it was supposedly sold out as some tickets were held back exclusively for tourists. The nice lady behind the counter called the club, the club sent over 2 tickets (although they were in the pricier section of the stadium). If you are desperate, that may work.

Thanks ursus, much appreciated! I am already certain I will have to resort to a scapler but I am at least going to try the regular route first.

Hopefully there are no events that lead them to impose any security restrictions.

I would second Johanna’s recommendation of the concierges at the better hotels; they have excellent scalper contacts.

I’ve actually considered buying a Milan season ticket only for purposes of seeing the Viola and Inter, but can’t bring myself to do it. It can definitely be cheaper than paying scalper prices.

Wow. I had no idea that Roma got creamed at Tottenham (out of town, no internet). I was, frankely, worried at our lack of actual goal-scoring in friendlies. Looking at friendlies that Roma and Milan have played, I will take my 1-0 win any day. Suddenly, that “no goals conceded” doesn’t look so bad. Hurray for us. Forza Inter.

5-0 was it? There must be something in the water in England that doesn’t agree with them. They keep getting killed there.

It’s preseason we were missing 4 starters, and they are 2 weeks further than us. Plus look who they have purchased? Helps to have cash.

    Did you expect anything less?

    Tbh I did not.

The real thing starts in a couple of weeks.

Espn says that the Bundesliga starts on Friday, is that right?
Didn’t we play a preseason game against one of those guys?
    Man, they start early!

Many happy returns to young Ivan “whippersnapper” Cordoba who turns 32 today.

    Cool shooting practice photos:

Did we get this many photos from practice when Mancio was here? It seems that we are kept very well informed regarding the team since Mo’ came in. Is it just me, or was it like this last year too?

No, it was like this last year (you can check by doing a photo search). I bet they use photos like these for training purposes (form analysis and what not).

Daniele, dont get upset. I wasnt knocking Roma. I know they are missing starters and it is only a friendly. I was just saying that maybe Inter isn’t doing quite as badly as I thought – especially by comparison. I was actually quite surprised by the outcome of the Roma game.

    “We” have a Christmas break.

The Bundesliga is off for six weeks, from mid-December until February (many teams play in indoor five-a-side tournaments or schedule warm weather friendlies during part of that period).
