Arriva Lampard?

By: Johonna | June 29th, 2008

The will-he wont-he rumors about Frank Lampard have just heated up a bit. According to Channel 4 – Football Italia:

Frank Lampard arrived in the peninsula this weekend to complete his £7.5m transfer to Inter.
Reports emerged last night from France Football that the deal had been struck and it is now believed the Chelsea midfielder is already in Italy to undergo a medical.
The Italian media claim he arrived in Positano last night and will be in Milan to put pen to paper later today.
Lampard is provided with a four-year contract worth £5.8m per season – almost a £2m increase from his Chelsea wages – and the club receives £7.5m.
The England star had only one year left on his contract with the Stamford Bridge side and was eager to reunite with new Inter boss Jose Mourinho.

So we should all be happy, right? Wrong.

Inter have denied that Lampard is a done deal and Chelsea say they are not going to let him go without a fight.
Scolari wants him and the club would like to hold him to play the last year out on his contract. A “club insider” had this to say:

Frank is priceless to Chelsea and is not for sale at any price. There are further talks planned with Frank and his people and a very lucrative contract offer will be made to him.
In the unlikely event he decides to turn down a new contract offer we would rather hold him to the final year of his existing deal than entertain the thought of allowing him to join another club.

Now, Lampard has always said he would prefer to stay with Chelsea, just that he would like a 4-year contract. Chelsea have only offered him a single year due to his age. Really, this sounds like a bargaining tactic and the sad truth is, there is nothing Chelsea can do. If Frank wants to leave, he can – for about 8 million euros. As much as the clubs say otherwise, they do not own payers – players are not chattel. Besides, why would you hold someone who does not really want to stay. Madness.

Just in case, lets learn a bit about Lampard, shall we?

Frank Lampard was born June 20, 1978 (buon compliano!) in London. He comes from a football family – his father, Frank Lampard Sr., was a full back for England and West Ham then coach for West Ham.

From what I have read, he has been a hard-worker for Chelsea: he is Chelsea’s top scoring midfield player ever, in 2006/7 he had the most game appearances by any Chelsea player in any one season (62), and “No-one of his age has enjoyed more Premier League football and no-one plays more often at Chelsea.

Oh, and although he missed some of this last season due to injury and bereavement (his mother died – we are sorry for your loss, Frank), his equalizer in the CL final this year gives him 20+ goals a year for the last three seasons (110 goals for Chelsea in total). Not bad for a midfielder. And anyone who saw that CL goal and the look on his face when he scored… I tell you, it brought a tear to my eye. Pure drama.

I think everyone can agree, aging or not, Frank Lampard is a quality player – at least he has been for Chelsea. My question is: will he be for Inter? He claims he is fit and has many years of world-class football still in him. Certainly Mourinho holds his abilities in high regard. There has been a tradition of top-notch English players failing specularly in Italy. I think this is a thing of the past, though. Football is global now. Players are much more flexible, and fans are used to players from all over the world on their teams. If we can pull this off, it has the potential to be quite a coup for Inter.

Quaresma – The saga continues.

Although there has be a lot of “he is coming” then “no he is not” surrounding his possible transfer to Inter, most of the reports are now decidedly in the “he is coming” camp – and not just on Goal.com.

Reports are that Inter and Porto have agreed to €35million in cash. There was some talk of a Pele going to Porto on loan for next season, but apparently that is no longer a requirement. These same reports claim that Inter and Ricardo have already agreed to personal terms and he is coming to Milan for a medical next week.
So there you go.

And while Branca was meeting with Porto about Quaresma, they may have also discussed Bruno Alves. Alves is thought to be second choice if Carvalho does not pan out.

La Gazzetta says that Inter a still interested in Mancini, and the stumbling block is the transfer fee. Roma want 15 mil euros but Moratti says he will outlay no more than 10. Inter tried to sweeten the pot a bit by offering either Suazo or Crespo, but the salary of either player is more than Roma’s salary cap allows.

In other news

Our old friend Alvoro Recoba will leave Inter this summer. His contract expires on Tuesday (July 1) and I think everyone agrees, a new one will not be offered. Apparently Qatar have shown interest but he is holding out for spot in Serie A – Palermo or Bologna to be exact (Bologna are after Celtic’s Nakamura, though, so there may not be room for Recoba there).

Recoba (El Chino) came to Inter in 1997 from Uruguay and was part of the squad that won the UEFA Cup that season. The next year he went to Venezia where he had 11 goals and 9 assists in 19 matches. Not bad. El Chino returned to Inter for the 1999/2000 season where he had his best showing: 10 goals in 28 Serie A appearances. In 2001, it came out that his papers were a forgery and he was punished with a 4-month ban. For the next four years, he played well, but by 2006/7, he announced his decision to leave Inter, citing his lack of playing time.

Torino did not work out well for him, either. My last real memory of him as a player is his incredulous head-shake from the Toro bench as Inter beat Torino 4-0 at the San Siro. Poor guy.

I will remember Recoba’s time at Inter fondly – although I really only caught the last few years of it. When he was on, he was a joy to watch.

Aguri El Chino. I am sorry it didn’t turn out better for you at Inter. We had a great run, there, though, didn’t we?

Allora, Ragazzi, ancora aspettiamo.

Forza Inter

  • Considering that the alternative is either A) he stays the year on the bench and leaves for free next year or B) pulls the dreaded Article 17 and walks anyway - accepting 10 million pounds seems the wisest move. I think that, in light of what is going on with CRon at ManU, Chelsea are making and example of Lampard. This is their line in the sand. I wonder who will win, the players or the clubs?

  • Johonna, you asked why Chelsea supporters are up in arms over this whole ordeal. Personally, I could care less either way. Well, two days ago, I didn't care either way. Now, I'm ready for him to move on.
Anyway, as for the supporters, Lampard is seen as a pillar of the club. He's a legend. Other than aesthetically, Lampards 20-plus goals in three consecutive seasons has many supporters wondering how the club could possibly replace that kind of production.
As for the club, I think they are more insulted than anything that he has refused each offer that has been presented. I mean 140k per week over four years is an absurd deal for a player of his age, yet he will not take it. I think holding out on his transfer is out of spite more than anything.
Really, the club should just accept a 10mil offer and move on.

  • Whoops...yes Chivu and Adri! I have no idea which of the strikers will be out...I hope Mario stays (ie not loaned...he for sure won't be sold) and I'm sure Zlatan isn't going anywhere. Cruz is probably a bit old to go anywhere...Crespo is big enough of a name that teams would buy him despite his age.

What did you guys think of Chivu last year? I was a little disappointed. I think he actually plays best as a defensive midfielder and not center back...the few games he was there he did well.

As for Maxwell, he's definitely extremely underrated. The guy is amazing!

Good luck to any of you that bid for a date with Moratti. I hope he isn't as crazy in person as he looks in photos.

    Forza Inter.

  • KJ

This is for us in the states, let ESPN know that their coverage of EURO 08 and WORLD CUP 06 was appreciated and to sign more deals with UEFA and FIFA.

  • Johonna

Hey, for all you fans with a little extra soldi: Massimo Morratti is auctioning a date with him on ebay for the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation of Europe.

You get to watch the Milan Derby (the Inter home game, probably) with him in the Tribuna d’Onore. Right now the bid is 2,010 euro -- there is still a day left on the auction.

  • Well, Lampard is still not a done deal. Here is our mighty coach:

"This season? I don't think so. Why won't he? Well, it's not because we don't want him to but I'm sure Chelsea officials and Chelsea and don't want to sell him," stated Mourinho. "For the next season it will be easier for him to join me at Inter. I'm 100% sure in 2009/2010 he will be playing here."

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/h...

So there. We may have to wait a year for him. Or, this could just be more bargaining tactics.

  • Maxwell is a Interista I would consider buying. Probably the most underrated player on your squad, I don't know why he's not being offered a new contract.

Swap you Molinaro for Maxwell. :)

  • kirby

    julio cesar
    maicon, cordoba, chivu, maxwell
    cambiasso
    quaresma javier
    lampard
    zlatan adriano

i have a hunch that we will be looking like that next season. once jose looks at everyone in training and assess the situation i'm sure he will come to this conclusion(this is all provided that we sign lampard and quaresma). maybe instead of lampard we'll get diego. that would be nice. i remember reading that he wouldn't mind going either juve or by us. rivas, pele and balotelli should be sent out on loan. they all need proper experience. solari, daccourt, burdisso and cesar should be sold. i'm impartial to what happens to suazo and crespo. if they go, that alright, if they don't, then whatever. they're nice backups.

what ever happens i'll be happy. lets see what comes out of this.

  • MAD

Also, we forgot about Chivu in the back. Thats four quality central defenders. i really hope that El Tractor moves back to the outside of the defense. Maxwell always looks more like a midfielder to me.

  • He has been gone for a whole season. That is practically forever in football terms.

Still, if you remember to count him, that is SIX forwards. I cant help but think that someone has got to go.

  • MAD

I did this too, everyone has forgotten about Adriano...

  • For upfront i meant to add Crespo/Suazo/Cruz as well...

    Looks a pretty solid lineup.

    Forza Inter.

  • If it's Mo's 4-3-3, I think we will see the back four remaining about the same (Maicon and Maxwell on the wings, Cordoba/Samuel/Matrix in the middle), midfield with Cambi, Lampard, and Capitano, and some combination of Zlatan, Balotelli, Quaresma, Mancini upfront. But who knows for sure.

  • Well I hope so, Ursus. We only have a few weeks left before Inter start training again. Really, if new players are going to train with the squad before opening day, Branca had BETTER GET A MOVE ON!

See, this is what annoys me about sports press. This is the list of articles from Calciomercato.com

30.06.2008, 21:22 -- Chelsea, official: Deco acquired, Lampard to Inter
29.06.2008, 14:30 -- Disappointment Inter: Chelsea Lampard not for sale'
28.06.2008, 15:59 -- The British Press confirm: an agreement between Lampard and Inter
    28.06.2008, 00:14 -- Inter: Lampard, almost done

    YIKES!

  • This is a non sequitur, but still Inter-news related:

David Suazo and his wife Elisa just had a baby boy - Luis Gabriel Suazo. This is their second child, the first is named David Edoardo Suazo.

    Congratulations Suazo family!

  • ursus arctos

Once again, I agree with Alessio (this is starting to trouble me).

Deco to Chelsea means that it is very likely that Lampard will be in blue and black within a few weeks.

If Inter can't sell Stankovic to Juve, there has been significant interest in him from Spain, especially Atletico Madrid.

  • MAD

Oh and I guess Stankovic never wanted to leave in the first place and no ones made him an offer in any case.

    Huh?

And what do we do with him now?

  • MAD

Tuttomercato is "reporting" (rumoring actually) Mancini for 15 mil. Seems a bit steep, but Roma is probably desperate for funds. The Chelsea want to keep Lampard stuff is probably to drive the price down for Deco. I can't see them trying to keep a player who wants to leave, not with article 17 and all.

I think that we may still be in the market for a defenseman and a backup goalkeeper in case Toldo leaves. Personally I think we have plenty of quality in the back.

I had a weird thought yesterday that that Special Mo' might be switching Zanetti to full back on the left and Maxwell to left midfield. I think Chivu will be in the rotation or starting in the middle for us when he gets better from surgery.

  • Johonna

If you believe all the rags, Cheslea want Lampard AND Deco. They are greedy that way.

  • Deco's arrival (it's official) only means good news for you.

  • Johonna

Well, according to La Gazzetta, both Crespo or Suazo would have to take a pay cut if they went to Roma. Apparently Roma have a 2.5 mil euro cap that only the salaries for Totti, Mexes, and now De Rossi exceed.

  • ursus arctos

Mourinho has hinted that he may want to hang on to Hernan, but that entire situation is a bit up in the air at the moment.

  • MAD

Is Crespo be leaving soon? Maybe to Roma who desperately need a relatively cheap striker and would like more than 9 mil or so for Mancini? I didn't think Crespo would last as long as he has... I thought his foot was already out the door in May but we may be saying goodbye before too long

  • ursus arctos

Lampard is in Taormina, not Positano.

But I do expect to see him in nerazzurro come the fall.

Moratti has been quoted as saying that his ideal mercato would feature a midfielder and two wingers, for which one can read Lampard, Quaresma and Mancini. Whether that actually happens will largely be down to cost, as the purse strings are not quite as loose as they were in the days when Alvaro was getting a million euro per goal.

  • romabaha

Yes, Lampard is that good! If Paul Ince was a success than Lampard is Jesus.
Alvaro is a great example of repeating the mistake gazzillion times..and paying for it. The only other player who got payed more sitting on the becnch is Winston Bogarde.
Anyways, just getting "The Special One" your summer transfers are spectacular!

  • MAD

I think that we will end up with Lampard (if he really wants to leave), Quaresma, and a defender: for sure.

I think that if Roma lowers their price tag on Mancini a bit we might get him too, but I am not sure that Roma are that smart. Roma needs to sell Mancini if they want to do much else this summer, like buy a very much needed quality forward.

All the infedelity, politics, big money deals and chaos is great! Where else are you gonna get this stuff? TV? HAH!

  • Recoba is frusterating because for years he was arguably the most talented player in the world, but he never seemed to give a shit.
