Back to Work
By: Johonna | July 15th, 2008
Tomorrow F.C. Internazionale start their 2008/09 season at the at the Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti. The day will begin with medical tests and a technical meeting, then Mourinho will have a press conference in the afternoon. Friday the squad heads up to mountains to Inter’s summer training camp in Brunico.
Joining the squad will be some up-and-comers including:
Francesco Bolzoni (midfielder – he is also on the first team list),
Jonathan Ludovic Biabiany (striker),
Andrea Mei (defender)
Davide Santon (defender/midfielder).
Also reporting for duty tomorrow morning will be Alessandro Faiolhe Amantino Mancini.
For his services, Inter will pay Roma a total of € 13 million in three annual installments of 4.4, 4.3, and 4.3 million euro. After that, it gets a bit more convoluted. There is a variable fee tied to Mancini’s performance that will max out at 1.5 million and Inter and Roma will play a friendly in the 2009/2010 season. So there you go.
As it stands, the squad is still a bit bloated, especially in the midfield and attack – and that does not include any new signings.
So, who’s gonna go?
Well, Crespo may still be going to Sampdoria.
There is nothing official, but Samp sound like they want him. Of course, Crespo wants to stay, but if he truly wants to get back on the Argentine national team, maybe he should consider the move. Dont get me wrong, I like Crespo … I would like him even more if he would regain his old form. Still, I would rather see him play at Sampdoria than sit on the bench at Inter.
Stankovic may still go to Juve. According to TuttoSport (through Goal.com), Moratti has lowered Dejan’s price to below 5 million. A bargain! There is also rumor of a loan to Juve (also on Goal.com).
And of course, there is poor Adriano who may be part of some last ditch effort to pull Lampard.
Suazo? He wants to stay and try for a first place. But is there room? I am of two minds over Suazo. He could be good and he has a few more potential years of playing in him, but he was just so darn lousy last season. I guess we could give a few more months. There is always the winter mercato.
Comming?
Besides our new (well, new to us) Brazillian? Who can say.
Quaresma may or may not still in the works. The club say Quaresma will be there next season but he has yet to show up for training (he says he is sick). As you can see by this fine piece of photoshopping, he looks mighty fine in blue and black.
Lampard… I am so over that. It will happen or it wont. I am changing the channel on that soap.
Allora Ragazzi, ritorniamo al lavoro.

Daniele, I dont hate anyone. Sometime it is fun to poke a caged snake with a stick, but that is about it. Glad to hear it was not you. All I know is that your IP turned up with someone else’s name. Thanks for explaining it to me.
Evaldo, Thanks. See. I also said blond, but the hubby says no STRAWBERRY blond. I think redheads just like to find other redheads. Either way, I think he owes me some cash.! Thanks.

Gianfranco, Is that email supposed to work? If so, it never has. Should I complain?

So Ursus, you dont think that Zanetti will remain in the defense? He is listed there now and said last season that he preferred the position, especially now that he is getting on a bit in years.

How often did he play in defense last year?
I agree with Ursus that old notations don’t explain it all the way, but I think Mancini will not be playing 3 out-and-out strikers. Ibra offers a bit of flexibility because he can actually dribble, he could conceivably play wing but he would not be happy. I expect to see something along the lines of this-

Stefan:
It’s like this. I and anyone else on this board is going to post whatever the FUCK they want to as long as it conforms with the rules. You don’t like it, I don’t care. I think it’s funny that some people think they are going to police my thoughts and words.
I don’t have a problem with anyone doing whatever they want to on their own boards. Come over here and be as polite I USUALLY (yesterday was different than usual) am on other people’s boards and I have no problem.
I really think it’s funny when people try to stab me in the back. Either grow a pair and say it to me or shut it. This works for impersonation as well. Personally, I think that you’re trying to win back points since I am sure it was you that impersonated me.
I don’t go on the Roma boards because I don’t like you people. But I will do what I please here.
Daniele:
I don’t buy it. If Johonna does, then it’s your lucky day.

This is what Mo’ had to say about the defense:
“Yes. I have spoken to all of them. The situation is easy: at the moment we have three central defenders – Burdisso, Materazzi and Rivas. But in a few months’ time we could have six because Chivu, Cordoba and Samuel will return from injury. When all six are available we will have to consider that I play two on the pitch, one goes on the bench and three end up in the stands. This isn’t a problem for me. In fact, it’s an advantage because I will have lots of cover if there are injuries or suspensions. But six central defenders are too many. I have been honest with them and they are intelligent and have understood the situation.”

6 is too much, but some like Chivu are versatile. Juventus has Legrottaglie, Chiellini, Andrade, and Mellberg, Grygera, and Zebina who are fullbacks but can play center-back. Andrade’s gone (with Samuel and Cordoba could happen) and given a suspension or two, maybe a short injury, that’s not always enough cover. I’d say shed Burdisso but no more.
I know Mourinho likes to play with a skinny squad, but with him planning suspensions, he’s been lucky to never really have an injury epidemic at Chelski. Inter had one last season, and it could happen again.

Plus, I think everyone has forgotten about Jimenez who played centrally for us in an offensive capacity, I think.
Here’s a link to lots of Mo’, Moratti and pics of training (if the link works)

J, where Zanetti ends up depends quite a bit on the system of play, both who else is in midfield and whether Mourinho is fully committed to attacking wingbacks. If he feels that he has enough width from the “wingers”, then Zanetti and Maxwell can flip roles.
Zanetti is one of my favourite players (and people) of all time and will play wherever he can be best help the club. I honestly don’t think that one can appreciate just how incredibly good he without seeing him live at least 20 times a year.

I may be the only one interested in this but a Quaresma update on TuttoMercatoWeb, already translated:
“Ricardo Quaresma has not be present neither one minutes to the friendly competition of Porto in the new season. Dragoes have faced and defeated PAOK 1-0 without O Ciganito help, remained in the bench, near to Jesualdo Ferreira. Quaresma has been the only player of Porto to not be still put in field, so Intere rumors become always more real.”

Okay, one more because I was talking about defenders before. Already translated but the translation is a little wierd. Comes from the same place so provide your own salt:
Mourinho wants Da Costa. The manager, even in Chelsea, has always wanted Portuguese players and seems to have found in the central of Fiorentina the ideal reinforce for Inter defensive line. Da Costa acquired for 4,5 millions from PSV in January.
In the same time Fiorentina appreciate Burdisso, but seems that the loan exchange is an hypothesis put aside. Remain to define so the purchase way: we are speaking of co-ownership, even if an economical belance and all Da Costa could be the right solution.

Johonna:
There’s an afternoon session worth of photos as well. Here they are if you didn’t see them already:
http://inter.it/aas/news/reader?N=29550&L=en&IDINI=29551
They said there were 3000 people there watching the afternoon session alone. There is also talk of Mo’ installing huge tv’s so that players and coaches can watch dvds of other teams and talk strategy. Tactics and strategy discussed and planned are to be the forefront of the new regimes training schedule.
I can’t say how excited I am.

so when are we getting rid of teh surplus individuals? (solari, daccourt, suazo, rivas)

Look at the intensity on the face of Mourinho, I love Carletto and he is a great coach, but this guy just plain motivates you even in pictures. I dont even remeber the last time Carletto looked motivated…

Solari is definitely gone.
I guess Dacourt has one more year on contract. But I mean, I put him, Figo and Viera in the same boat… that is not in Inter’s long range plans.
I think that we are sending Burdisso to Fiorentina for Da Costa (Who I know very little about, I guess I’ll have to wiki him…):
http://www.transfermarketweb.com/index.php?action=read&idsel=20930
I had read something about Samp being close with Crespo:
http://www.transfermarketweb.com/index.php?action=read&idsel=20849
Suazo thinks that he’s staying:
http://www.transfermarketweb.com/index.php?action=read&idsel=20718
That’s all I got, Kirby. Others may have more and more reliable. Take all of this with a grain of salt

I don’t think Inter are getting Da Costa, certainly not for Burdisso even up.

For those that don’t know, July 18, would have marked the 66th birthday of Giacinto Facchetti if he had not died 2 years ago on September 4th 2006.
Facchetti was a forward his whole life and he was pretty good until he was seen by THE WIZARD Helenio Herrera. Those of you who have heard of La Grande Inter know that under HH and Giacinto, Inter had perhaps the greatest period of success that any team ever had in Serie A.
Facchetti, under the tutelage of The Wizard, changed positions from forward to left full back trusting on the genius of Helenio.
It worked out pretty well. He won 4 Scudetti, 1 Italian Cup, 2 European Champions Clubs Cup (Champions League Forerunner), and 2 Intercontinental Cups (I think this is now the World Club Cup). He was a part of his (and my) beloved Inter for almost TWENTY YEARS. 476 appearances. 59 goals from the left full back position.
He was also captain of the Azzurri for 70 times out of just over 90 caps. Only 3 players have ever had more appearances. That solo European Championship that Italy has? He was on the team for that Tournament in 1968. He played on 3 WC teams, including the 1970 WC team that made the finals and lost to Brazil 4-1.
Oh, yeah. He was only sent off once in his whole international career.
If that was all he did, he would still be considered one of the greatest Italian footballers ever.
When he retired he stayed with his beloved Inter as an executive and worked as a part of his Inter in many capacities. He was elected President in 2004. He died in 2006 of cancer of the pancreas.
You will never find another Inter player to ever wear the Number 3 shirt. It is and always will be Facchetti’s shirt. Tu sei tutto quello che. Everything a man should be.
