Bologna 1 – 2 Inter: Whew, Am I Glad That Is Over
By: Johonna | February 21st, 2009
First of all, I love love LOVE Julio Cesar. As far as I am concerned, he is man of the match. He made four saves, three of them were absolutely FANTASTIC. Mourinho agrees that JC had a great game, saying:
“The goalkeeper of a great team is really special because sometimes he doesn’t touch the ball for most of the match and makes one save in 90 minutes, but in that save the whole match is decided and you understand how valuable he is.”
Not that today was all good – the first half was desperately uninspired. Still, we came out swinging in the second which is all we needed to bring home three points. For those of you who missed the game, there are highlights after the jump (set to thumping techno; watch in HQ at youtube):
So, you will note that Cuchu was… well… instrumental in Bologna’s goal. In the video, he appears to be getting out of the way of the ball (which prompted some snide comments during the game). Well, it turns out that Esteban has a perfectly good explanation:
“I did Bologna a favour, gifting them their equaliser. The ball bounced and it was at the height of my stomach. I preferred to concede a goal rather than risk a sending-off. I was convinced that we could win.”
So rather that risking a handball and a possible sending off, he got out of the way. Besides, if the ball had struck his hand and Cuchu was sent off, they would have gotten a penalty anyway. So there, it was not such a strange decision after all.
Besides, he scored a goal. His first Serie A goal of the season (he also got a goal in the Coppa Italia match against Genoa).
Balotelli got some good pitch time today. He scored a goal, he didn’t get booked, and got to try out a dorky (but endearing) celebration with his good buddy Santon. I hope this spells the return of Balotelli to the general squad rotation.

Rivas wasn’t terrible. This is only the second game he has started and he actually did an ok job. Strangely, the other game he started was our home tie against Bologna. Mou must think he has some special Bologna mojo or something. Anyway, he made at least one pivotal save today, was not sent off, and made no terrible blunders. That should rate a 6 I think.
In terms of general goodness, we had some nice passing plays and some good possession play in the midfield today. We defended well from set pieces – something Mou had been particularly working on last week. At the end of the game, Bologna had something like 6 corners in a row and we dealt with them all.
Ok, Now the Bad
First, Samuel injured his calf during warm up before the game. Mourinho said today that he is “unlikely to make it for the game on Tuesday.”
That is a major bummer. Hopefully Chivu will be ready for Tuesday. If not…. well, I dont want to think about that.
Ibra was also taking some pretty hard knocks today, and, at one point, had to be taken off the pitch to receive treatment on his knee. Cambiasso had a close call early in the game, and Cordoba had a knock to the head. Right now, though, it looks like only Samuel is in doubt for the big game.

Muntari just does not do well as a trequartista. Mou admitted as much in the post match interview, but apparently having Muntari and Stankovic split the match was key his cunning plan for the match.
I also think that Adriano did not have the best match. Well, at least he didn’t play today as well as he did against Milan. But, just like Muntari, he wasn’t tragic, just a bit off. He particularly had some difficulty in completing passes.
And Santon, while he was definitely adequate, there was that one huge error at about the 40th minute. If not for the wonders of Julio Cesar, DiVaio would have had the opener. But hey, he got a shot on goal so it wasn’t all bad.
Looking Ahead
Ok, so the big game is Tuesday. I am teaming up with Wayne, one of the writers on the Manchester United board, for the next blog. We are looking for a little criss-cross action. Besides, what do I know about the EPL? (nothing!). In the words of Javier Zanetti: “It will be very exciting”
Other News
Well, the Primavera squad lost to Sampdoria 2-1 in the Viareggio tournament. The final will be Sampdoria v Juventus.
Good job getting to the semi-finals, boys, and better luck next year.
Also, if you didn’t see it, Goal.com has a nice translation of a Corriere dello Sport interview with ex Inter coach Luigi Simoni where he sings Zanetti’s praises. Good stuff indeed!

Allora Ragazzi, oggi, più importante, abbiamo vinto. Domani ci sarà guardare il resto cerco di catturare noi.
FORZA INTER
I will leave you all with a little Gangsta Mario…

and an old friend. I especially like that the pitch is reflected in his glasses. That’s art, that is!

Acquafresca clear on goal, called offsides… wasn’t.
Honestly, it’s like watching our game vs Juventus this year.
Milan saved from losing by the width of a post on an excellent shot.

Acquafresca subbed off at around 60′. His replacement was clear on goal – called offsides, wasn’t… again.
Milan scored on the very next possession on a defensive mistake. Looks *a lot* like Juventus of days past. Milan looks old and slow for most of this game. Winning because the linesman… well, you know…

And the PM couldn’t let his team lose two in a row.
I wonder if he sends the the Assistant Attorney General to the Sports Judge to complain about the shitty reffing in this game, or a ban for Mr, P. Spice for starting a brawl at the end.
I’m going to bet not…

Paolo, I hate Cristiano Ronaldo as much as everyone else, but to say his free kick was ‘nothing special’ would be untruthful, if not a little hypocritical. Im sure if Zlatan had hit that free kick we would all be giving him endless amount of praise. And I think blaming Robinson would be very harsh too. I think Ronaldo’s problem is that he needs to take a ridiculous amount of free kicks before he does get it right, but when he does it is certainly spectacular. On the other had he should not have been on the pitch to take the free kick, as he should have been sent off for ‘kicking out’ and blatant diving. Regarding your critcsm of the EPL, I think your way off the mark. I dont think its much worse in quality in comparison to the spanish or italian league. It true that the EPL gets a lot of global hype and exposure, but this comes with the success of its clubs in european competitions. However there might be an argument in saying that the EPL is so strong atm because of all the money being pumped into it. Besides this is all likely to be temporary due to the fact that the dominance of the top european leagues tend to alternate.
That being said, i cant wait for tuesday …FORZA INTER!!!

That FK really was nothin that special.
More of a horrible play by the goalie.
I personally thought Becks’ FK against Genoa was better, don’t mean to step on any toes around here hahahPosted from

MAD when I watch Inter it “Looks *a lot* like Juventus of days past. “

ok asem, I get your point, but Beckham is a FK specialist and Ronaldo quite frankly isnt. The way Ronaldo hits his FKs are mostly ‘hit n hope’, you cant compare him with the likes of Beckham, Pirlo, DP, ect.

Bosco, It really was nothing special, just like Balotelli’s yesterday. Both spot kicks found the back of the net by way of error. Balo’s was a lot more lucky. Ronaldo was at least going for goal and it appeared Balo’s was an attempted cross.
My statements regarding the Prem were based solely from a tactical and technical perspective. Outside the top 4, it is a appalling football. Fine, they have all the money in the world and have this so called “entertaining football” but, what are they going to do when the World’s billionaires decide take up a new hobby?
Anyhow I really do not want to discuss English football. I’ll watch it from time to time but I never really liked it and I do not find it “entertaining” what so ever.
Tuesday should be interesting and fun but as I have stated before, I am not optimistic. And, when the draw was being done, I was hoping we would draw United or Liverpool. I am excited for it though!

Not much word on Samuel today, only that he “had treatment and underwent medical tests.”
Fingers crossed that it isn’t serious everyone.

Bosco, Don’t Forget Totti …
I really hope Samuel isn’t seriously hurt. I still like the guy a lot after his time with Roma. “The Wall” is a beast.
Juan is hurt too, hopefully both recover by tomorrow.

Asem I can’t stand that stance either but what can I say about Hairgel7 that hasn’t already been said
Great article Johonna and I thnk you’re spot on about samuel like maicon last week he will magically be fit for our next game
Unlike many of you here im optimistic I think that we’ll knock united out , not only has fergie never beat mourinho but also united aren’t as good as people make them out to be
And another thing to consider is is the fact that everytime a team wins the CL they don’t get past the first knock out stages the following year

My bad some teams have done it in the past but it hasn’t been done in a while

My heart has been broken too many times. I am not allowing myself to get emotionally attached to the champions league. It is not that I dont think we have the quality to take out ManU, but that, with Inter, that just doesn’t seem to matter how much quality we field. It will happen or it wont, I am not going to cry if we dont make it through.
(I am singing Pazza Inter as I write this though).

Ive been trying to convince myself that I dont care about the CL. Its not working
I know our history. I know Im setting myself up for another bitter disappointment. I cant help it

Dont get me wrong jo and dave i understand you guys’s concern if we were to go by our history then HELL yea we wont make it but this is the way i see it one day we will break our curse and who knows if that one day will be tuesday ?

I’m with you Dave – can’t help but get excited, even though I’m familiar with our recent history in the CL. I’m watching with a bunch of ManU fans and already told them that I expect them to win (yes…I’m a pessimist)

Hey, hopin you guys knock out Man U as well.
Italy over England and all…And this time around, you have a healthy Ibra, which automatically makes you like 0238402384234 times stronger than the squad that took on Liverpool last year. I hope their run stops there though, so Roma can go to the final and win it all.

How can you guys not care, or convince your self not to care. Its about time Inter won this tournament. It’s also time for revenge after they knocked us out in the late 90’s. What a horrible season that was. I think that was the year we had 4 coaches. The forwards were all out injured we played with Ventola for gods sake.
We have to win this if not for Inter then for the Italian league in general. Im tired of the EPL. Im tired of serie a being considered the 3rd best.
Inter must win this. 44 years is too freaking long
