Champions League Drama and Other News
By: Johonna | September 3rd, 2008
Ok, so we have all sorts of little snippets of news to deal with. The arrival of Quaresma has thrown Crespo’s place in the squad into doubt and half of the team is out of town for the international break. At the end, we take a little looksee at the team and their contracts.
First, Mourniho has released his squad list for the upcoming Champions League group stage games:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni
Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Chivu, Mei, Santon
Midfielders: Stankovic, Figo, Jimenez, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Bolzoni, Quaresma
Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Adriano, Balotelli
B list: Caldirola (defender), Destro (striker), Obi (midfielder), Stocchi (goalkeeper), Tremolada (midfielder)
As you all can see, Crespo, Dacourt, Rivas, and Samuel are not on the list. Apparently, the news was broken to Hernan in a text message, and although he is not happy about it, he says that he will not leave, even if it means always sitting on the bench. Crepo’s agent, on the other hand, says he may leave in January. I guess we will all have to wait and see.
Dacourt was supposedly being shopped around this summer to no avail. Samuel has yet to return from injury. Rivas is also still injured, though it may be that he just did not make the cut. Also, note that Zanetti is back in defense.
INTERNATIONAL CALL-UPS
As many on the Serie A board have been so nice to point out, Inter does not have many players on the Azzurri. Still, a good portion of our starting 11 play for their national teams, and 9 players have been called up to their respective national teams (including Italy).
Argentina: Cambiasso and Zanetti
Brazil: Julio Cesar and Maicon
Ghana: Muntari
Serbia: Stankovic
Sweden: Ibrahimovic
And for the Azzurrini (Italy under 21): Balotelli and Bolzoni.
Rivas was called up to the Columbian national team, but is staying in Italy to continue rehabilitation.
So, not too shabby.

Ok, I think that this is enough for everyone to think about for now. Dont forget, we have a friendly this Friday (Sept 5) against Locarno.
Allora Ragazzi, basta. Domani, parliamo di Locarno.

And I forgot to add that Moratti has been given a house in the Sicilian town of Salemi. The Mayor is selling crumbling houses in the old part of town for 1 euro. Sounds like a deal, doesnt it? Well, not entirely. The houses are all damaged, most in the earthquake 40 years ago and you have to fix them up.
“In exchange for a token payment of one euro we will offer them one of these houses and ask that they undertake to restore them within two years while respecting their original characteristics.”
To raise awareness of the cause, the mayor of Salemi gave Moratti a house and made him an honorary citizen of the town.
If only I had a large pot of money…

I don’t meant to rain on the good ol’ “Quaresma is fantastic parade,” but does anyone remember this? He’s also been left out of the most recent Portugal squad. I love him in bursts but wait until he starts taking vacations mid-match. If Mourinho can’t make him into a complete player, the money Porto got plus Pele might be the biggest rip off of this past transfer season.

Acquafresca’s probably got a 4 year contract, you guys bought him from Cagliari this summer and sent him out on loan.

Oooo, this is interesting:
“West Ham have moved quickly to fill their managerial vacancy after Alan Curbishley’s resignation on Wednesday by comprising a five-strong shortlist for the position.
The list is understood to include Gerard Houllier, the former Liverpool manager now technical director of the French federation, Croatia boss Slaven Bilic, plus three Italians: Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Mancini – the ex-Inter Milan coach – and former Italy manager Roberto Donadoni.”http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=569446&sec=england&&cc=5901

Giocinto Facchetti, a player for Inter for 18 years, over 90 caps for the National Team, former captain for his club and the National Team and former executive with his beloved club died exactly 2 years ago today of Pancreatic cancer. Inter.it has lots of personal stories about him. He was quite a player. One of La Grande Inter.

The personal stories from Cruz and Cordoba about Facchetti are quite moving. I had no idea he and Cruz were so close.
From Cruz:
“”It’s a bit hard for me to talk about Giacinto Facchetti today,” the Argentine told Sky Italia. “It has already been two years and we still feel great sorrow. The loss of such an important man like Giacinto, a man we miss greatly, was very sad and painful for us players, the club and everybody. I am still close to his great family and I almost feel part of it.”From Cordoba:
What did he teach you in particular?
“To live without fear because you should never hide anything to anyone and you should always be transparent. This is the nicest thing because you can say what you want and because people understand what you say with your heart and with honesty.”Posted from
