Ciao e Grazie Mancini – It Is Official
By: Johonna | May 29th, 2008
The official announcement has come: Roberto Mancini is no long the coach of F.C. Internazionale Milano.
“F.C. Internazionale have informed Roberto Mancini of his dismissal from the position of head coach of the first team, in particular because of the declarations made by the coach after the Inter-Liverpool match last 11 March 2008, and because of what followed, up to the facts most recently reported in the press.”
In case you dont remember, here is what he said in March:
“Despite still having four years to go on my contract, these will be my last two and a half months at the helm of Inter and at the helm of an Italian team. I have already told the boys, and it’s right to tell everyone else. It’s a decision I had already made, it didn’t depend on tonight’s defeat.”
Then, as we all know, he retracted his resignation and everything looked hunky-dorey. In fact, Mancini was 100% staying at Inter.
But then the sordidness began.
First, the press was widely reporting that Mancini was out and Mourinho was in. Then, there were the reports of a terse meeting between Mancini and Moratti, and that Mancini did not want to go and would not go quietly. Now, though, with the statement Inter has released, it seems they are looking for just cause to fire Mancini (see above) and not pay out the rest of Mancini’s contract. The really sad part is, this whole thing may go to court.
It seems that Moratti has now accepted Mancini’s resignation (no matter what Moratti said in March), and I can only think that the “facts most recently reported in the press” are the phone records between Mancini and Brescia, Inter’s Mafia-connected tailor.
And then the players got involved.
Ibrahimovic was tactful:
“I do not know anything more on the change of coach, However, it is a decision of Moratti, he is the head, he decides, and what he does is right. Mourinho? He is a great coach, who doesn’t know that?”
And when asked about possible dressing room conflict, he stressed that:
“I see an Inter that is well, the family is happy.”
Stankovic, a favorite of Mancini, was angry:
“In my opinion his cycle is not over. Mancini won three Scudetti and four Cups in four years. A great club makes changes when the Coach is a flop, not when he has won three Italian championships in a row.”
Crespo just wants to stay at Inter, no matter who is the coach.
Others weighing in on the debate are our old friends Alessandro “Spillo” Altobelli Sandro Mazzola, and Ciccio Colonnese, and Marco’s father, Giuseppe Materazzi (Marco is too professional to comment). Everyone is surprised but hopeful. They all think that there must have been some breakdown between Moratti and Mancini – no matter what the reports say.
We can only hope this will all be settled amicably and professionally. Also, I would like to see Mancini somewhere… Chelsea maybe. Dont they need a coach? Of course, maybe Galliani’s “jokes” have something to them and Ancelotti will go to London.
Looking Forward
Although it has not been officially announced, Mourinho can’t wait to come to Inter.
Now it is reported that Mourinho has presented Moratti with a list of four players that he wants to sign:
Marek Hamsik (Napoli)
Gokhan Inler (Udinese)
Diego Capel (Sevilla)
Aliaksandr Hleb (Arsenal)

Mancini wanted Abdoulay Konko from Genoa, and transfer rumors suggest that Mourinho agrees.
There is some suggestion that Stankovic and Maicon may follow Mancini (totally unsubstantiated and not something I can link in), and, while I dont feel strongly about Stankovic – he can go if he wants – I would hate to loose Maicon.
How will Mancini be remembered?
I hope it will be fondly. Personally, I will miss him on the bench. His flowing locks, his impeccable attire… The whole package. With Mancini, we have achieved more than with any other coach (and I do have those stats if you want them). Still, there are those that say he is tactically lacking and anyone could have won those Scudetti with the team Moratti gave him. I think whatever his legacy will be, it will be colored by what happens in the next few weeks. If this does end up in the courts, no one will win. Please, Moratti, I beg you, settle this discretely and honorably. Oh, and please, dont sell Ibra and Materazzi, please. I can hardly sleep as it is.
Really, all this speculation is wearing on me. I just want things to be settled so that we can start building for next season.
Ragazzi, siamo campione d’Italia e la prossima stagione, vinceremo ancora, Mourinho o no!
PS. Those Azzurrini are quite fit! There are some real cutie-patooties there. Bravo Azzurrini! And good job Chile!

I think it too late. This just in:
“Mancini told ANSA Friday he had instructed his lawyers to defend his reputation in court. He accused the club of ‘gravely offending my honour and reputation’ by alluding, in its statement, to wiretaps involving him, club players and officials, and a Milan gangland tailor.”
and then
“Mancini’s lawyer, Stefano Gagliardi, told ANSA that any move by Inter linked to the coach’s shock announcement in March would not be valid ‘because the national contract states such action should have been taken within ten days’. He added that Mancini would file a suit for damages to his image caused by the club communique, noting that it was broadcast across the soccer world. Thursday’s statement put an official end to Mancini’s four-year term at Inter in which he became its most successful coach for thirty years”
How long before they send on the clowns, do you suppose?

Ok, I am as Nerazzurro as anyone here, but I can only give credit to Mancini for 2 Scudetti. Inter has won 3 during his tenure as manager but only 2 were won on the pitch. I know I know… the whole Calciopoli thing happened and Inter were given #14 as a result. The club may have gotten (deserved) that title but I, honestly, cannot give Mancio the credit and say that he has won Inter 3 titles.
Mancio was a decent manager. He was not GREAT but on the same regard he was not the complete imbecile people accused him of being. His tactics were ok. He did have a good, deep cast of players that were at his disposal. The players he received were not always the ones he had asked for, but it was still a good club.
Domestically, he was good. I don’t think he could handle Europe though. His run in Europe with Inter was embarassing.
I don’t think he is a big game manager. He lacks confidence in big games and it is evident. He is way too careful and way too defensive. The moves that you know he is going to make are made but usually too late to have a positive effect.
I am not going to lie. I am not upset to see him go. I thank for his contributions to the team and the titles he has brought us, but I do not think Inter were going to improve anymore under his direction. That was as good as they were going to get.
I think a change was needed. It seems the dressing room was divided and there was obvious tension.
Hopefully the changes that are made were for the good of the club and that club’s best intentions were the #1 motives for his dismissal.
Rumours are the replacemt is Mourinho. I think that will bethe case. He is a winner and we can’t be too upset about that. One of my buddies seems to think that Lippi might get it. I doubt it.
FORZA INTER!!!!!

I am completely at one with the change, now.
What I am not happy about is all this legal wrangling and the fact that we cannot move forward until this Mancini thing is settled. Also, if Moratti behaves like an ass about this (or more like an ass), then who will want to come work for the club? I understand that Mancio had to go, I just wish it was or will be handled better.

I agree with Johonna. Now that the decision is made, let’s move forward. The next season will be here soon enough.
Let’s hope Mourinho is a great as he probably thinks he is

ARGHHHHH! So Julio Cesar and Maicon are just about 5 miles away from me at the downtown Seattle Sheraton. It is taking every ounce of self control (and self respect) I have not to bolt out of work and stalk them!

he lost the dressing room after the liverpool match with his stupid outburst. he cannot blame inter for sighting that as the reason he was sacked. i cannot believe he is even thinking about suing the club for “defamation of character” when it is him who fucked up his chances of staying. at this point i am happy for his departure. i thank him for all the wonderful work he has does and the stability he brought with his 4 years in charge(ie he stopped the managerial mary-go-round).
as you all are, i am. completely at ease with the managerial change. but who you think we may lose if mancini takes over at chelsea. because you know he’ll want to bring his favourites with him. dejan? maicon? maxwell? dejan’s poor performances has sealed his fate in my mind. i would hate to lose those wing backs. i love them both. max or than mai =P
i guess we’ll see what happens in the coming weeks.
FORZA US!!!

ill agree kirby but it was classless as hell for the club to bring that up in the statement. they could have easily omitted it with no difference. horrible way to end it. it should have been “we thank roberto mancini for leading us to 0, 1, 2, or 3 scudetti (depending on how you look at it) and wish him the best in the future.” it was just unbelievably stupid.
will we see the old inter that has 1.2 coaches per season?

DONT SAY THAT ALESSIO! Now I am going to have to throw salt over my shoulder or do some anti-jinx dance.
I really thought we had moved on from those times.
And yep, it was classless but I think Moratti is trying to save 20 million euro.

agreed alessio. very classless, but maybe necessary?. i was quite surprised when i read that statement. USUALLY they say something nice about the coach. maybe moratti forgot how to sack someone nice? maybe…
honestly i dont think that mancini will win the court case if it goes that far. but who am i to say that…
as to going back to seeing 1.2 coaches a season, i dont think that will happen. moratti is not an idiot as we make him out to be. and i dont think he will sack jose. but again, who am i to say what someone else will do.
(completely off topic. i wnet to england’s training session today and was taking pics. this is my favourite. http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/5811/c7qn6.jpg lol. its a good laugh)

It’s all legal posturing on both sides, though I agree that the reference to the wiretaps was classless and unnecessary. Inter are trying to establish at least some basis for terminating Mancini “for cause” (in which case they are not contractually bound to pay him the amount due on the rest of his contract), while he is of course taking the opposite tack. These things happen when 30 million euro are at stake. It will be a soap opera for a while, but it will eventually be settled.
BTW, Mourinho is reported at having been especially impressed with Maicon (and Zanetti and Cambiasso) in the months he’s spent studying the team. He’s not going anywhere; Dejan may well be a different story for obvious reasons.

Could be – that is was Goal.com says at least. I will believe all of these rumors when someone finally puts pen to paper and signs a contract! I want the picture of them holding their new Inter jersey!
But yes, it would be nice!
