CL Gameday 2: Inter v Werder Bremen

By: Johonna | September 30th, 2008

Where: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan
When: 8:45pm CET (11:45am pacific; 2:45 eastern)
How to Watch: Find a stream and cross your fingers. Also, ppv at UEFA.com.

Tomorrow F.C. Internazionale Milano entertain Werder Bremen at home. On paper, this is our toughest competition in Group B. Werder Bremen come into this game with a single point, the result of a goalless draw against Anorthosis Famagusta. Their form in the the Bundesliga has been quite different, though. Werder Bremen have won their last three league games and have scored 10 goals in their last 2 games. Of course, in those 2 games they conceded 6 goals so there may be some room in the back.

We are, of course, looking to rebound from our horrifying defeat at the hands of the forces of darkness this last Sunday. Our fearless Captain, Javier Zanetti, had this to say about about last match and the one tomorrow:

“Milan won the derby but we look ahead with optimism. We must try to get our second win in the Champions League. There are so many games left in the season that it’s early days yet. Mourinho told us after the game that we should think about Wednesday’s encounter because there was nothing we could do about the derby result.”

On the other side of the pitch, Werder Bremen midfielder Torsten Frings had this to say about the upcoming game:

“With the four goals conceded against Hoffenheim, there was certainly a lack of concentration on our behalf caused by the 4-1 lead. That won’t happen against Inter. We want to present ourselves well there. We have the potential and the self-confidence to do that. We’ve won our last three games in succession and that’s a little run we’d like to continue.”

US

For those of you looking for Mourinho to tinker with his lineup after Sundays loss, you may be disappointed. Mourinho has said that “eighty percent of my team will be the same as last Sunday’s,” and he has called up a great heaping pile of players (well, 20):

Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Chivu.
Midfielders: Stankovic, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Bolzoni, Quaresma.
Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Adriano, Balotelli.

I think we are likely to see Muntari instead of Vieira tomorrow (fingers crossed) and I wonder if Adriano will start ahead of Quaresma. We could see a repeat of Nico and Marco in the back as both will have league suspensions.

THEM

Thomas Schaaf has brought 18 players to Milan:

Goalkeepers: Wiese, Vander
Defenders: Boenisch, Pasanen, Naldo, Fritz, Prödl, Mertesacker
Midfielders: Baumann, Vranjes, Diego, Özil
Strikers: Rosenberg, Hunt, Sanogo, Jensen, Frings, Pizarro.

Werder have been on a bit of a run and would like to keep it up. They have a reputation for attacking football (and the goals to show for it). Keep your eye on Özil and Diego — Özil has scored 3 goals with 3 assists in 6 games; Diego has 3 goals and 1 assist in 4 games. Add that to the talent up front and they will undoubtedly make our defense work. The question is, can Naldo and Mertesacker hold the back or will they allow 4 more through (fingers crossed on the latter)?

HISTORY

We dont have much of a record against Werder Bremen. We met them in the group stages of the Champions League way back in 2004/5. In those two games, we beat them 2-0 at the San Siro (both goals to Adriano). In the return, we drew 1-1. So not much to draw on there. Last year Bremen lost every one of their away matches in the Champions League and failed to advance out of groups. This year, I am sure they are hoping to fare better. I hesitate to compare league games simply because the Bundasliga is very different from Serie A. Lets just say that both Inter and Werder Bremen are competitive teams looking to win. Hopefully our recent loss will help us remember how much we like to win and not just depress the team.

In a strange coincidence, the referee for this game is Lubos Michel (Slovakia); he was also the ref the last time Inter met Werder Bremen at home (2004).

—-

This game will be a test for Inter and the squad’s mentality, as well as for Mou’s ability to balance an attacking attitude with the obvious need for defense. The derby showed what happens when the midfield plays too deep, forcing the front three to track back too much. We need to work on stopping the ball at the half so that the midfield and the front line link up properly. Marco (if he plays) will have to keep on his toes. We can win this if we are smart – keep possession, no injuries, and end the game with 11 players. I predict Inter 2 – 1 Werder Bremen (although I would prefer 2-0).

Ricordate, Ragazzi, dobbiamo vincere con la nostra mente per vincere sul campo.
FORZA INTER

One of these days we’ll figure out that every time that we try to launch the ball up to the attack, we turn it over.

It’s a better bet than the big wheel in vegas

Well, it looks like more of the same in october than we had in september. We look better than our opponents, but we are not putting it in the net.

All the English teams won this matchday except for Chelsea, who are probably one of the favorites to win this thing.

Strange match. The Curva Nord was less full than we’ve seen it at any time in the last three years, and Inter often seemed as if they hadn’t played together before.

Particularly up front, there was a lack of communication among the strikers and too much space between them and midfield. Stankovic was particularly poor, and Ibra had one of those games where he spent almost as much time sulking as he did creating chances. Muntari started brightly, and then made many too many poor passes and decisions; Balotelli was also very up and down. And then there was their goal, which came (yet again) from a complete breakdown in communication in central defence.

Thank goodness for Maicon, Zanetti, Cambiasso and Julio Cesar (especially at the end). Adriano was also impressive for his commitment to the cause and willingness to work for the team.

The first 20 minutes seemed very much to be the emotional response that everyone wanted after the disappointing Derby, but after that they seemed to lose their way.

One can only think that it is taking longer for Mourinho to get them to play the wants them to play than anticipated. And one begins to wonder whether he really has internalised the fact that he doesn’t have Frank Lampard in his squad. There was quite a bit of anti-Mou grumbling in the tram on the way back to the centre (though one has to realise that grumbling is the natural language of the Interisti).

It will be interesting to see what team he turns out against Bologna on Saturday. The upcoming trip to Cyprus also looks much more important now than was expected when the fixtures were released.

I’ve said before and i’ll say again, i don’t feel a 4-3-3 is a good formation for Inter and the players you have. 4-4-2 with Mancini and Quaresma on the wings and Adriano and Ibra up top could be deadly, and Cambiasso and Muntari and Zanetti could be good enough to hold down teh middle.

The thing is that when you watch them play live, it becomes quite clear that it isn’t a classic 4-3-3; it isn’t unusual for one of the forwards to drop back, and they are constantly changing positions (Quaresma even played a bit on the right at the very end and looked very uncomfortable doing so).

I’m also confused as to how the players you’ve mentioned would fit into a 4-4-2. Even considering Mancini and Quaresma as midfielders, you would still have five.

    Oh Cripes:
“For Saturday’s game against struggling Bologna, Mourinho will have to deal with a defense wrecked by injuries.

Marco Materazzi exited the Bremen game after 19 minutes with a right thigh problem and was replaced by Nicolas Burdisso, and both defenders are suspended for the Bologna game.

Christian Chivu has a thigh problem after playing three games in a week following his return from a shoulder injury in June, and Maxwell is also out.”

Good thing we didnt pair down the squad!

We’re dealing with the same problems, no Chiellini or Legrottaglie for our match this weekend! Neither of us had these kind of injuries early last season, what the hell is going on?

The Euros and World Cup qualifiers (in both South America and Europe), for one thing (though that doesn’t explain Legrottaglie).

I also have the sense that the early season calendar has been much more demanding than usual, especially for internationals. It’s been two matches a week since the beginning of the season (actually earlier than that, if you count things like the Azzurri’s match in Nice).
