The Euros and World Cup qualifiers (in both South America and Europe), for one thing (though that doesn't explain Legrottaglie).

I also have the sense that the early season calendar has been much more demanding than usual, especially for internationals. It's been two matches a week since the beginning of the season (actually earlier than that, if you count things like the Azzurri's match in Nice).

We're dealing with the same problems, no Chiellini or Legrottaglie for our match this weekend! Neither of us had these kind of injuries early last season, what the hell is going on?

Oh Cripes:
"For Saturday's game against struggling Bologna, Mourinho will have to deal with a defense wrecked by injuries.

Marco Materazzi exited the Bremen game after 19 minutes with a right thigh problem and was replaced by Nicolas Burdisso, and both defenders are suspended for the Bologna game.

Christian Chivu has a thigh problem after playing three games in a week following his return from a shoulder injury in June, and Maxwell is also out."

Good thing we didnt pair down the squad!

The thing is that when you watch them play live, it becomes quite clear that it isn't a classic 4-3-3; it isn't unusual for one of the forwards to drop back, and they are constantly changing positions (Quaresma even played a bit on the right at the very end and looked very uncomfortable doing so).

I'm also confused as to how the players you've mentioned would fit into a 4-4-2. Even considering Mancini and Quaresma as midfielders, you would still have five.

I've said before and i'll say again, i don't feel a 4-3-3 is a good formation for Inter and the players you have. 4-4-2 with Mancini and Quaresma on the wings and Adriano and Ibra up top could be deadly, and Cambiasso and Muntari and Zanetti could be good enough to hold down teh middle.

Strange match. The Curva Nord was less full than we've seen it at any time in the last three years, and Inter often seemed as if they hadn't played together before.

Particularly up front, there was a lack of communication among the strikers and too much space between them and midfield. Stankovic was particularly poor, and Ibra had one of those games where he spent almost as much time sulking as he did creating chances. Muntari started brightly, and then made many too many poor passes and decisions; Balotelli was also very up and down. And then there was their goal, which came (yet again) from a complete breakdown in communication in central defence.

Thank goodness for Maicon, Zanetti, Cambiasso and Julio Cesar (especially at the end). Adriano was also impressive for his commitment to the cause and willingness to work for the team.

The first 20 minutes seemed very much to be the emotional response that everyone wanted after the disappointing Derby, but after that they seemed to lose their way.

One can only think that it is taking longer for Mourinho to get them to play the wants them to play than anticipated. And one begins to wonder whether he really has internalised the fact that he doesn't have Frank Lampard in his squad. There was quite a bit of anti-Mou grumbling in the tram on the way back to the centre (though one has to realise that grumbling is the natural language of the Interisti).

It will be interesting to see what team he turns out against Bologna on Saturday. The upcoming trip to Cyprus also looks much more important now than was expected when the fixtures were released.

All the English teams won this matchday except for Chelsea, who are probably one of the favorites to win this thing.
