Clinging to Hope: It is Not Over Yet

By: Johonna | May 14th, 2008

sad manI am sorry that this took so long to get up. The first draft was really bitter, the second maudlin and bit corny. Hopefully I will end up with a readable balance this time.

There is no possible way to sugar coat it, so why bother. We didn’t win on Sunday. Again. Basically, we can either throw up our hands and give up or fight fight FIGHT until the bitter end. If you chose the first option, I think Inter is not the team for you. Try Milan or Roma. If, like me, you chose the latter option, welcome to our little slice of the Curva Nord. There will be heartbreak but there will also be glory. Geesh, now I’ve gotten all teary-eyed.

For all the Inter fans out there, although we have these little, ehem… setbacks, remember: we have always been ahead and will remain so. I am keeping a positive attitude and fully believe we will win on Sunday.

The only really disheartening thing is that it seams like even if we manage to win we loose. Apparently the changes in the Parma coaching staff and fact that Catanian officials don’t want Roma’s stabby stabby fans down there is all a vast Moratti-fueled plot.

Yikes.

Shall we pick at the scab?

Recap: Inter 2 -2 Siena

Basically, Inter had all the possession (62.3%), all the corners (14 to their 0) and and no excuse for the draw. Kharja and Maccarone scored for Siena and Vieira and Balotelli for us. Marco was awarded a PK, but failed to get past Manninger. Seina were very very fouly and accumulated 5 yellow cards to our one.

(As an aside, I love Marco Materazzi. I have said it before and I will say it FOREVER. I just dont care if he is not in the same form he was last year. I just dont care.)

Moving on.

If you are interested (and I always am), here is le pagelle from the Corriere dello Sport for the game:

INTER (4-4-2): Julio Cesar 6; Maicon 6 Burdisso 5 Materazzi 4 Maxwell 5 (36′ st Crespo sv); Jimenez 6 Vieira 7 Cambiasso 5,5 (40′ st Pelè sv) J. Zanetti 6; Cruz 6 Balotelli 7,5 ( 18′ st Suazo 5). Mancini 6.

SIENA (4-3-2-1): Manninger 8; Ficagna 6,5 Portanova 6 Loria 6 A. Rossi 6; Vergassola 6 Codrea 6 (1′ st Alberto 6) Galloppa 6,5 ( 20′ st Riganò 6); Kharja 7,5 Locatelli 6,5 (1′ st Coppola 6); Maccarone 7. Beretta 7
ARBITRO: Gava di Conegliano 4,5

As you can see, Siena got better scores across the board, probably because they were able to equalize. Inter was the heavy favorite.

For both Catania and Parma, Sunday is their last chance to avoid relegation. If Parma wins and Catania looses, Parma stays up and Catania goes down. Needless to say, both teams will be fighting tooth-and-nail. I will do a preview of the game later.

Inter have announced a “press silence;” even so, here is the news.

Ibra says he is committed to Inter no matter what anyone else says. Also, he may just pick up a few minutes this Sunday.

Figo wants another year, but with Jose.

Barca wants Chivu

Cambiasso is out for the rest of the season (ie, Parma and Coppa finals) with an ankle injury

Cruz and Materazzi
will miss the Coppa Italia final. Cruz will also miss two more games.

Subscribers to the Inter Channel have voted Zanetti’s goal against Roma as the best goal of the season.

And the Inter campus had a visit from an old friend, Obafemi Martins - do you suppose he is looking for a job?.

So, to sum up:
- we are not dead yet so lets not act like we are
- some people have very active imaginations
- Parma will not roll over for us, just as Catania will not for Roma

Non abbandoniamo la speranza, Ragazzi.
FORZA INTER

I really have to jump in here on this whole “Inter disrespects Milan’s accomplishments thing” now that we’ve all decided to parrot that silly channel 4 blog written a few days ago.

It cuts both ways, its part of the rivalry. To suggest anything else is ridiculous. How about Ambrosini and his “You can stick your scudetto up your ass” banner? Milan have spent the last two years dismissing Inter’s (and Roma’s for that matter) accomplishments by maintaining this ludicrous “we’re not really trying in Serie A, only in CL. You know we could have won it if we cared” attitude. Its at the very least the same thing, regardless of whether or not Berlusconi comes out and says that “he’d root for Inter”. And in my opinion, they’re even more disrespectful. Mancini and co. take shots at the World Club Cup, Milan chooses to denigrate their own country’s national championship. I can’t think of another club that does this openly.

I know its tough for Roma/Lazio fans to understand the dynamic, as other than that 99-01 stretch, neither team has ever won anything…

Since when did it become a crime to say what you are thinking? Why does everyone think that it is their right to have sunshine blown up their asses, or assume that its someone else’s duty to blow that sunshine? Is it wrong to say what you think is in the realm of real possibility?

What is so wrong in saying that Inter thought if they wrapped up the Scudetto it would be against Siena? Was that some sort of bogus calculation to not believe that it could and maybe should have happend on that day? Was it so far fetched, or such an impossibility, that no one could have thought it could have happened? Is that not classy? What would have been the more politically correct thing to say? Were they suppsoed to say that their team was not going to try and and win the Scudetto at home infront of their fans? Was he supposed to lead his club into that match with the belief that it was not a possiblilty? Is it really any different then the Roma Fans who have said, and some of them have said, that this season is over and they are the Champions already?

Why do people have to walk on egg shells Just to be politcally correct? And why do people just expect people to do that?

    …and…

The FIFA Club World Cup is a bullshit Trophy. There I said it too. The Real Trophy to win was the Champions League Trophy and Milan did. Congrats!

Paolo … you are referring to Freedom of Speech? let’s not start with that.

“What is so wrong in saying that Inter thought if they wrapped up the Scudetto it would be against Siena?” … because that is disrespectful from a coach that represents the club to discard another club and its players in such manner when that same club has a great record against the big 4 this season. It was not just disrespectful but also foolish and arrogant. Mancini should know better that there are no certainties in football… how about saying: “We want to win the scudetto in front of our fans at the San Siro and hope to do so against Sienna” … that is different to it is in the bag and noone would have had any issues with it. What managers say to their players in the privacy of the changing room is nobody’s business but theirs.

Regarding the World Cup… Milan was representing Italy there and Milano for that matter. This is like officially saying who cares for how the Italian women football team does in their Euros since that competition doesnt really count. … you may think like that in private and tell your friends but never when you speak for your club. It is unsportsmanlike.

and yes, someone who is in higher position does have to watch what they say and how they say it.

I can’t believe Milan actually tried for the Club World Cup trophy. Mancini was right on when he called it a Mickey Mouse tournament, a glorified friendly, and to think, it fucked up their season! Should have sent their youth team instead.

I completely disagree with you Gabriella. Sorry. This is sport. It generates a ton of money and it pays a ton of money. If certain people in certain positions cannot deal with someone speaking their mind about what might happen then maybe they should rethink what they are doing. Especially when what he thought could happen was a real possibility. It didn’t, fine but why go on and on likes it some big deal when it isn’t? he didn’t gurantee victory, he simply said he expected to win.

My feelings on the Club World Cup is that it was Milan representing Europe. It had nothing to do with them representing Italy or They were there to play 2 games against a Japanese team and they won they would play the winner of the other semifinal which happened to be Boca Juniors. Comparing that publicity tour of a competition to something like the women’s world cup/euros is like comparing apples to oranges. I dont see you point in bringing that up.

I am not surprised by blog-hopping, really. As I said, I wasn’t expecting anyone to be insulted by what I wrote because I didn’t think anyone would take it that seriously. I want even all that sure that people really read it! =0)

Sunday can not come soon enough. I find myself getting snippy with all this tension, something I like to think I am usually above.

I have nothing against Roma except that they are 1 point behind us. In fact, and I hate to admit this, my boyfriend has (and wears) a De Rossi jersey - that I gave him for Christmas!

So, as a blanket statement: please do not be insulted by what I write as that is never the intention.

Everyone is welcome here, no matter who you support.

Adam, Mancini should not hang out with mafiosi. That said, having friends that are criminals is a lot different than fixing (or trying to fix) matches. I think everyone would agree that Mancini telling someone - who is not involved calcio at all - to flee from the law is a lot different than Moggi bribing referees. Yes? Yes. In fact, I would hazard to say that Manicini’s actions, while wrong, had no effect whatsoever on any matches.

    Apples and oranges.

hey, this just goes to show that us at inter are culturally diverse. we like to have all different kinds of friends. black, white, red, yellow, blue, criminals, politicians, it doesn’t matter to us.

also, just because we supposedly associate ourselves “criminals” doesnt mean we are guilty of any wrong doing. i cant remember who, but someone at milan is a former prime minister of italy. i view all politicians as criminals, so does that make him a criminal? is the entire of milan corrupt because they have an individual who i think is corrupt in their organization? nope, it doesnt. everyone looks for any way possible to fuck inter up. that gets me pissed. so stop it please…

He is a current PM of Italy and a criminal. Unfortunately Italy’s parliament passed a law making Berlusconi immune from prosecution while he was in office. Then the corruption charges were dismissed, some simply because the statute of limitations had run out. So, officially, he is not a criminal. Also, Berlusconi has stepped down as the president of AC Milan.

    But point taken, Kirby.

I think Manniger deserves the 8 pagella; he was in good form. To bad he was on the wrong team!

Earlier in the season I was rooting for Siena to stay up, but now I regret it :-)

Marco, Marco, Marco. What are we going to do with you? Aren’t you paid a bucket load of money? He it looked like he really telegraphed that PK. I know Johonna is sweet on the guy, but give me a break…

i dont know about you johonna, but that would totally gotten in the way of my relationship. it actually did in the last one! when we started i asked her who she liked in serie A and she said PARMA or all people. i told her that this couldnt work unless she was a total neutral or an inter fan. she was open to teh idea of supporting inter. i thought her whose who, our history and a bunch of other random facts. she is now a fully fledged inter supporter(how i know its true? well she has it displayed on her facebook on one of those application thingys. facebook never lies! lol). i wish this could have actualy worked out… she was pretty much prefect. beauty, brains, inter and an azzurri supporter. lol if that wasnt perfection, i dont know what is. lol

Ok Ibra is in the squad but I’m guessing won’t start. Probably same back four as last time (hopefully Matrix does better…) Midfield will be interesting with Cambi out…Vieira and capitano for sure, but then who? Jimenez and Dejan? I don’t know if Mancio will put them both on together. Dejan has been horrible lately so perhaps Jimmy and…Maniche??! or Pele?

Pretty sure Mario and Cruz will start up front. I will be delighted if Zlatan doesn’t have to come on…he will only be used in an emergency.

Make or break time here. Forza Inter.
