Dinamo 1 – Pazza Inter 2

By: MAD | November 5th, 2009

First things first. Happy Birthday to Angelo Moratti RIP, Luis Figo and Mourinho’s daughter.

Alright.

Allow me to summarize my reaction to the first 84 minutes of this game: Here we go again.

I thought: another game in which we are the better team and not necessarily acting like it. Oh, we had most of the possession… even in the first half if that means anything. We had more corners, way more shots on target, and more shots in general, etc., etc. But we weren’t putting the ball in the net. Which is not the norm when we play in Serie A. We have a fantastic offence in Serie A. In Europe, we squander chances, it seems, even against the Anthoris Famagustas of the world. I can only hope that the team that shows up against Barca is the team that won the second half and the game in Kiev.

I also, before I get to the meat of this review, I wish to share an experience. I watched the Barca game and heard the commentators talk about our “group of death” about 3 times. After our game yesterday, I read about our “group of death” and our “group of champions” several times. Why do I bring this up? Well, I used these phrases two weeks ago and a frequent visitor to this board told me I was full of it and an apologist for my team. It’s nice to be vindicated, again.

Okay, my Inter Man of the Match:

mourinhokiev

Highlights after the break.

Stats Home Team First

BalotellimilitokievShots (on Goal): 9(1) 19(8)
Fouls: 19 19
Corner Kicks: 3 7
Offsides: 3 1
Time of Possession: 40% 60%
Yellow Cards: 2 2
Saves: 6 0

Yep that’s right. 19 shots on goal and 8 were on target. Meanwhile we only had 1 shot on target… and it went in. It was a perfect European game by our boys. Did someone mention “Bad Luck” in the comments during the games yesterday? I have no reason for mentioning it… nope no reason at all…

Pagelle:

Cesar: He one shot against that required a save. One. It wasn’t even a hard shot. It did seem deflected, so I will give him that. Otherwise, yikes. 6.0

sneijderKievMaicon: He couldn’t maraud his way forward too much because he had a forward in front of him, but he wasn’t as solid as I thought he should be considering the situation. 6.5

Samuel: Once again, our best defensive player was Walter. He almost scored again, too. We made a great purchase when we bought him. 7.5

Lucio: He had the worst game of his short Inter career against this very team a couple of weeks ago. But he bounced back beautifully. He pushed forward and pressured like he was brought on to do. 7.5

Chivu: He had a decent outing, which is his norm nowadays. None of the back four looked too bad yesterday, since they didn’t have too much to do. 6.0

Zanetti: Solid, solid, solid. Maicon didn’t look like he was handling his area very well and Zanetti came in and shored up the right. Wasn’t his greatest passing night but he contributes in so many ways its hard not to overlook one bad aspect of his game. 6.5

Cambiasso: Cuchu has looked out of sorts in some games since his return from knee surgery. This was one of those games. He is at least as much at fault as Chivu for the goal. He was subbed at halftime correctly. 6.0

Stankovic: Deki has been so solid for us this season that’s its even more glaring when he’s having only a decent game. He took some shots and worked his ass off. I can’t really fault him for that. 6.5

miltiokievSneijder: Here’s the thing. Kiev is a big powerful team. They play the power game at least as well as we do and it bugs us when we can’t run over people – which is why we had so much trouble with these guys. I think Sneijder was a little intimidated. He stays out of Schmujko-land because in the second half he took it to Kiev and he finished off a goal that noone would have thought any less off him if he didn’t put in that extra effort. PS. I think that the pass to Milito for the fisrt goal was a wayward shot. I don’t think that I care too much though. 8.0

Eto’o: I am really disappointed in how Eto’o played. He had 2 golden, and I mean golden, opportunities to finish off these bastards and he whiffed on both of them. No one ever said that he was a clinical striker, but c’mon. 6.0

Milito: He really came on in the second half. His goal was deflected which was lucky and his effort not only saved the ball from going out after Muntari put a rocket on net, but his excellent shot and subsequent defelection is what served up the goal for Sneijder. 7.5

Balotelli: Was brought in too provide a spark and perhaps a goal. That’s exactly what he delivered. He provided a spark and missed a 1v1 with the keeper, Ibra-style. 7.0

sneijderkiev2Motta: Handled midfield duties very well – he pushed up and fell back and was relatively effective. Definitely the right choice to bring in for Cambiasso who was struggling. 7.0

Muntari: He was the last gasp sub that Mourinho could possibly bring on. It was his blistering shot from distance – on net – that the Kiev keeper fumbled that allowed Milito and Sneijder to capitalize. He played a wonderful 15 minutes or so. 7.5

Mourinho: I don’t always grade Mourinho, because sometimes the game doesn’t need to be determined by a sub or a change in formation. This game, needed both. And what a job he did. Quick what does Milito, Muntari and Sneijder all have in common? Remember those people that kept coming onto this board and jeering at Mourinho’s mercati? Funny, huh? 9.0

Analysis

sneijderkievgoalIt goes without saying that if we were playing against a Serie A team, I would have been more upset. My ambivalence towards the contemporary so-called Champions League has been well documented. I have been told that I don’t like it because Inter can’t win it… which is funny since Inter has won it twice. So that’s obviously not why I just don’t care about it. The format really bugs me. The format used to be called the UEFA Cup in days gone by – a format which Inter has won 3 times. But with this format it’s not really a Champions League. It’s The First Two, Three or Four Domestic League Table Spots League, really.

For those who don’t know, the current format and rebranding is an effort for UEFA to keep the top teams in England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy from forming a European Super League whose TV deals would bypasses UEFA’s accountants – like the Premier League’s in England bypass the FA. Which is why it’s so inclusive – to keep enough teams happy so that they will keep the UEFA leadership in place.

It’s also why I don’t consider it too prestigious. It’s panem to keep the mobs (in this case the teams) happy enough accept leadership. So as long as they are dishing out huge plates of money I am happy for my team to do well enough to maintain a further financial advantage over the majority of Serie A.

That being said, I want my Beloved to do well. I just wish that we didn’t have to wait until the second half of all these games before we decide to lock it down and press. If we could ramp up to gear faster, I think that would be ideal. Of course, if we could have had our major contributing players not just getting back from injury… that would be ideal too.

Our group:

Rubin 4 5
Barcelona 4 5

It’s easy to say that now. I’m pretty sure at the time you were convinced what you were saying was real… sans dynamite, sans lake.

I hope this was a character building win. Something very real for the team to build off of and something they can use to their advantage moving forward.

At the risk of creating some controversy, does last year’s squad pull this off or is it over after 70-75 min?

Looking Forward to the encounter at the Camp Nou, but not before we try to crush some life out of Roma! I do and I do not look forward to that game, especially when it comes on the heels of an International break.

Roma is Sunday. The team should be tired but pumped. Unfortunately, Roma will also be buoyed by their result against Fullham.

We then have break, and Bologna as a bit of a warm up on the Saturday before the Barcelona game.

BTW, have I mentioned recently how much I love Google calenders? I love them!

Oh, and I think now may be the time to start the “New Coach for Lazio” pool. Anyone think Ballardini will make it to the winter break?

Lazio are down to 10 men and down 2 goals make that 3 goals! – and the game is only 15 minutes in.

    Ouch.

Paolo, I never said Sneidjer, Milito, or Eto’o were worthless, in fact if you look back, quite the contrary. (Good to see Sneidjer has shaken his horribly inconsistent Real Madrid form)

Sneidjer’s upturn in form is probably related to the fact that when he’s healthy, he plays. Simple as that.

Paolo, I think the reason Inter had trouble overcoming stubborn opponents is they relied too heavily on 1 or 2 players (this is nothing new, I know) and when those players got frustrated the team just ran outta ideas and fell flat. Now they persevere in games like Kiev and Udinese b/c its a team effort now not just a chance for individuals to prove themselves.

Call me cocky but I think Roma is pretty depleted right about now and should be a fairly straight forward game. With Totti, Juan, Nico out there should be plenty of space to attack. And from what I read, it doesn’t seem like Roma dominated Fulham today. It all turned around for them after a soft red card Fulham got right after the half. Even Riise’s goal was deflected in by his little brother.

MAD, nice write-up. One point to make though:
PS. I think that the pass to Milito for the fisrt goal was a wayward shot. I don’t think that I care too much though.
Are you serious? There’s no way that was a shot. Any player who remotely knows how to hit a shot gets their body behind the ball, especially from outside the area. Unless they are hitting a chip shot, which is a different beast altogether. Given Sneijder knows a thing or two about hitting long-range shots, its crystal clear that he fully intended to pass that time. The reason he floated it up a little was because there were bodies in the way, and its easier for a ball that’s on the ground to get intercepted than one that’s lobbed up a little. It was a perfect thru ball, from a top class playmaker.

Crespo scored for Genoa. I still have a soft spot for him.
It’s impossible to not like Crespo. He’s a Professionals’ Professional! Class Act!

And his passion for the game and goals always melts me. I’ll always be a Crespo fan. Truth be told, I was even a Crespo fan when he was playing for Milan. It was thanks to his terrific goals back in the 2002-03 season that we reached the semis of the CL. I’ll never forget what a terrific combination he and Vieri made. Vieri ended as Serie A top scorer, Crespo as the CL top scorer with 10 goals. Still makes me drool!
For some of those memories, check out this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGoXkWpOEA4
The play starting from 1:17 is one of the most beautiful team plays I’ve ever seen from Inter, including this year’s Milan derby and all.

Sneidjer’s upturn in form is probably related to the fact that when he’s healthy, he plays. Simple as that.

Couldn’t have put it better. I’ve read what the Real fans think about Sneijder, and not one of them talked about ‘form’. The common complaint was that he was never fit. He missed about 2/3rds of last season with injury. I’m glad he’s at least a little healthier now, but he’s already picked up two knocks after coming here. Trouble is, he plays in a position where you tend to pick up a lot of hits from defenders. He’s the man on the ball more often than not, and hence is the target of a lot of tackles.

That’s another reason why Balotelli is so crucial for us, he’s another player who holds on to the ball, and takes hits. I know, its kind of evil of think of it that way, but basically another lamb at the altar. Players like Deki, Cuchu, Zanetti, Muntari, Eto’o, Milito are all players who never keep the ball at their feet for more than a few seconds. While such players are important, you also need players who can hold on to the ball to give these other players time to move around.

Yep. I am serious. It looked like a shot that hit Milito right in the gut or the chest, I forget now. But it didn’t look like a pass… mostly because Sneijder didn’t even look up as he made it – it looked like he was just blasting it.

With respect, MAD, I’m not sure which game you were watching. When Sneijder shoots, he hits it with his laces for power, especially from outside the box. On this occasion, he knew exactly where Milito was before playing the ball in, and placed a nice little side-footed, semi-lob that Milito just had to lift his foot a few inches to trap. I thought it was terrific vision from Sneijder.

BTW, on a technical note – it isn’t uncommon for playmakers to not look at the person they’re passing to on the final ball, because it gives the defender that split second advantage of knowing where exactly the ball is headed. Many good playmakers keep track of their teammates’ movements with just peripheral vision.

That was a pass MAD, any great playmaker dont need to look up for his team mates they are able to read plays 2-3 seconds before it even happens and you know what that was a great pass that had actually some speed in to it just so the ball gets in Milito’s feet faster than the defender i give a lot of credit to sneijder for that that was an assist that doesnt really happen that often. THANKS TO SNEIJDER FOR IT.

OH COME ON!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS???? HOW CAN ANYONE STILL CRITICIZE US AFTER THIS MATCH????? Look we needed to win in kiev and not only did we win, but we fucking dominated those guys and could have quite frankly put 7 past ‘em if we had bothered to finish our chances, the fact of the matter is this was an absolutely fundamental match for us and we had to win it. And against all the odds we did, no one thought we were going to, I myself couldnt believe it after sneijder had put it in the back of the net, I think I yelled louder than when I did when Ibra scored against parma on the last day of the 07/08 season. THIS was exactly the inter I wanted to see, the inter who played in the champions league with true HEART and emotion!!! This was the champions league dream result for us, and now it will give the team an absolutely MASSIVE morale boost ahead of the match with barcelona in a few weeks time.

Well, I looked at it again, and it still looks like a shot to me. I acknowledge that I could be wrong, which is why I keep saying that, “it looks like a shot to me” instead of being more forceful in my opinion.

I also repeat that it doesn’t really matter one way or the other to me… I still think that he played a good game.

“I’m not sure which game you were watching.”

I was watching Dinamo – Inter. And I think that we can disagree here. If Sneijder came out and said that he deliberately passed the ball at Mach speed to Milito on purpose, I will be the first to concede the point… as I have on several occasions.

Yeah, we could just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

At any rate, we do need to step up a notch before playing Barca. It isn’t enough to start playing in the second half, like we did in this game, or start getting into the game only after the first 30 mins or so, like we did in the last 2 matches. Our strikers need to be more clinical. Our midfielders need to do theirs as well, make their passes connect! Hard work isn’t enough if you can’t do your job properly. So yes, Mickey, there is still room for criticism here.
