Dynamo v Inter: One More Shot at Redemption

By: Johonna | November 3rd, 2009

ITALY SOCCER CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Inter are going back to Russia (ok, well Ukraine) to see if we can finally find our footing in Europe. We have not exactly excelled, and our high-flying Serie A position will not count for a hill of beans. It will be cold, and Kiev is a good team, but the boys are up for it and I am going to give them all the support I can (whether it helps or not).

What: Dynamo Kiev v FC Internazionale Milano, Group F Champions League Matchday 4
Where: Valeriy Lobanovskiy Stadium, Kiev, Ukraine
When: Wednesday, November 4, 8:45pm local time (11:45am pacific, 2:45pm eastern)
How to watch: FSC is showing the game at 10pm pacific, 1am eastern. If you want to watch it live, you can see it ppv at UEFA.com ($9.99) or try to find a stream. (MyP2P, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).

Right. So we haven’t exactly made Europe our bitch or anything. Still, we haven’t completely embarrassed ourselves either (well, the Lucio own goal was pretty bad, but it so could have been worse – it could have been the winning goal). Still, our position is precarious and this game is very, very (very very VERY) important. Basically, if we don’t pull a win out, then bye bye CL dreams. No pressure, though.

Last time we met, we just about had them but for a slip of the head by Lucio. In the end, Inter and Kiev shared points with a 2-all draw:

Ok, confession time: I haven’t really been watching our Champions League matches.
There, I said it.
I think that the only one I watched from start to finish was the first Barcelona game. After that, I watched a bit here and there, followed the game on the UEFA live match thingy, but I have not really watched any of them. To tell the truth, I am having a hard time really finding the will to care. I mean, I would love to finally win a game (winning is always fun), but… well, the champions League just doesn’t mean anything to me. I know, all you Milan and Juve fans are saying that is because Inter hasn’t won one in recent memory – if we had, I would be pumped to win another. And I am sure that is probably the case. To me, the CL has always been like winning the lottery: it would be fantastic, but I am not holding my breath. Still, I know that other, more sports-savvy minds than mine say it is important so I will play along. That, and I wholeheartedly support my team in all of their endeavors.

So if I seem a little blasé, you all know the reason.

THEM

Not all that much has changed since I wrote the preview for the home leg of this tie. I still dont know who any of these folks are (aside from Shevchenko), and their coach still has an insane amount of facial hair.

According to UEFA, Valeri Gazzaev has some players either injured or doubtful:
Out - Badr El Kaddouri (ankle), Olexandr Shovkovskiy (stomach), Pape Diakhate (knee)
Doubtful - Andriy Nesmachniy (knee)

In addition, Leandro Almeida, Gérson Magrão, and Artem Milevskiy are a caution away from suspension.

Apparently, Dynamo have not done all that well in their last two fixtures: they went down 0-2 to FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Cup and held 1-1 by FC Karpaty Lviv in the league. Gazzaev says all this adversity has just made them more motivated for this upcoming game. Great.

US

Well, Mourinho brought just about everyone with him for this match, fit or no.

Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni, Belec.
Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Materazzi, Samuel, Chivu, Santon.
Midfielders: Stankovic, Quaresma, Thiago Motta, Sneijder, Muntari, Vieira, Krhin, Cambiasso, Mancini.
Strikers: Eto’o, Suazo, Milito, Balotelli.

Even though they went to Kiev, Thiago Motta (thigh), Sneijder (thigh), Muntari (heel), Chivu (thigh), and Balotelli (flu) are all in doubt. Mourinho said:

“I am only concentrated on Inter and today I want to see if the five players that I currently have in doubt will be able to take part in the game. I will talk to them after dinner, face to face, me, them and the doctor, because who goes on the pitch tomorrow will have to be at one hundred percent, and because it’s too important a match to have uncertainties in the hours before the match. For all of them I need replies in the last training session.”

So, we just wont know until tomorrow who will actually be available to play. T.Motta says that he “feels well” but I guess it is up to the doctors. I certainly dont want him to play before he should. The Chivu news, on the other hand, is new to me. I had no idea he was hurt. I guess now is the time for Santon to find himself. Either that, or Zanetti will play again in defense.

Both Chivu and Maicon are a booking away from missing a game. Chivu we could/can probably do without. Maicon would be a blow. Still better to lose him for Kazan over Barca, I guess. Vinod has kindly pointed out that our next CL game is actually Barcelona, so Maicon had better mind his Ps and Qs.

deki cl presser
Vai Deki Vai Deki Vai!

For those of you who are worried about what our less that terrific start to the CL campaign might mean for tomorrow, take hear! Stankovic says:
We will do everything to change this start to the European campaign and win tomorrow. We have worked a lot on this aspect and we know where the problem lies.

See, problem has been identified, and you know what they say: Knowing is Half the Battle.
Scoring lots of goals is probably the other half (or, maybe scoring goals is 32.5% while keeping their goals out is the last 17.5%). Luckily, Mou has that covered as well, saying: “What do I want? I want to score a goal more than Dynamo. Nothing else.”

Lineups are a bit tricky at this stage, what with so many players on the maybe list. If anyone wants to hazard a guess, go ahead. The right one gets bragging rights for the rest of the week.

As for the stadium situation, it looks like the game will go on, as planned, with the doors open. The Mayor of Kiev had suggested that the game either be canceled or played behind closed doors, but both clubs and UEFA were none too keen on that (football stops for no man – no matter what infectious disease he may have). Basically, there have been 67 flu deaths in Ukraine this fall, which, according to the Deputy Health Minister, is not much different from previous years. Just in case, though, Dynamo (the club) has purchased 20,000 face masks to hand out to fans and the stadium staff for the game and the Mayor of Kiev is still telling people to just stay home.

Ukraine Italy Champions League
It may be cold outside, but it looks like Lucio got a warm reception at the Kiev airport. The masks are a bit worrying though.

Anther issue for our boys will be the climate. According to The Weather Channel, it will be about 29°F (feels like 23°F) tonight. Nippy. At least it will be dry – no one is ready for snow.

Everyone appears prepared for the cold (love that Inter-branded puffy coat, Lucio), but I cant help but think our Brazilians will suffer. Julio Cesar is ready, saying: “I will have to cover myself very well in Kiev, I have already packed so many sweaters and protective cremes, we hope that the boys do not make me suffer in that climate too much…”

IN OTHER NEWS

Despite what Michel Platini says or thinks, F.C. Internazionale Milano is not in debt. Now, we may sometimes return a loss, but Daddy “Deep Pockets” Moratti is always there to cover the shortfalls. Inter does not owe anything to banks.

Figo kids
Buon Compliano, Figo.

Today was Luis Figo’s 37th Birthday. In true famous football form, he spent the day partying with half-naked models and other glitterati visiting sick children at the Institute of Neurosurgery at the Medical Science Academy and the Soleterre charity’s hospital in Kiev. Wow. I love Luis Figo. I am so glad that he is hanging around with the club.

Alrighty. To recap:
– Important game.
– Chance for redemption.
– Gotta win (but no pressure).
– Having a hard time working up the will to care – but I will. Important people say it is important so I will find the way.
– Deki is gonna solve all our problems

How much did Moratti pay the Dynamo keeper & linesman or did he threaten to expose his secrets from the phone taps on his home?

Pazza Inter amala! Pazza Inter amala! Pazza Inter amala!

I still can’t believe we won. when shevchenko scored…and the first half display I kept asking myself why do I bother….why do I always look forward to the CL matches….why do I always think that this match different.

In the second half… as I said before in CL league we need to play 110% and we need luck… as I kept watching I thought that we are playing at 110% but….we had bad luck…etoo…milito…balotelli…snijder all went close…but no luck…we even hit the post twice… and all along my phone kept pushing me goals from the arsenal and fiorentina games….even liverpool scored….I kept wondering how the fuck we still did not score…then in the 86th minute everything changed…thank you milito….thank you snijder…and thanks to every player who played.

everyone played really well in the second half…lucio…zanetti and maicon were solid at the back….motta linked our defence with snijder and balotelli…stankovic kept running untill the end….snijder was in every attack…etoo and milito did what every striker should do….shoot …pass…open spaces…also balotelli opened spaces for our attackers…but the boy has to put more effort when he gets selfish he keeps loosing the ball and he doesn’t even try to get it back,…but when he plays with the team he plays very well….

Mourinho is a very brave and intelligent man…he changed two players at the beginning of the 2nd half…not many managers do that….and in the end he even took out samual and we only had zanetti, lucio and maicon …considering lucio and maicon kept pushing forward…so we only had zanetti at the back….and that was enough as we kept pushing them.

This win does not mean we have qualified but we are in a better position than the others and this win will lift us.

    Pazza Inter amala!

PS: I loved the way motta treated shevchenko at the end :D . as he was responsible for loosing my temper and breaking the remote.

o yes and as a side note, Thiago Motta needs to stay healthy. He is absolutely pivotal in the midfield for us. Besides, don’t tell me I was the only one who noticed his push on Shevchenko ;)

    Gazzetta:

“From last to first in just three minutes. The majority of this match was like an agonizing one way journey to hell. But, as reminded by Mou, in football the distance from hell to paradise is often minimal. And Inter have traveled that distance with heart and with the two most precious new acquisitions in Mitlito and Sneijder. From the first minute to the 85th, Inter were feeling the posibility of going out of the competition. Then, the guy, thanks to the doctors, has recovered in just two weeks, was steering the wheel to find the Argentine gunfighter.”

Ok. So I watched the game.
Yep – Thiago took a shove at what appeared to be a very bitchy Sheva. Also, it looked to me that Marco came out after the game and gave said Sheva a big hug. Nice to know they kept whatever animosity there may have been on the pitch.

All the credit should be given to Mourinho for this win. He turned this team around at the half. It was the first time I’ve seen “Serie A Inter” in the Champions League. Balo MUST start versus Barca. Forza Inter.

What a game! It really was fun to watch. I couldn’t sleep after the game my heart would not slow down. We dominated the second half and it would have been so unfair to lose. Mourinho was excellent with his subs to begin the second half. Mario really changes the entire team plays. Then miss after miss after miss. I almost was gonna die! Then those 2 crazy goals. What a finish!
    Forza Inter!

Apparently Arrigo Sacchi has said this of Mourinho (reported on goal.com):

And former Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi thinks Jose Mourinho deserves all the credit for this dramatic result.

“I believe Mourinho made all the difference, as he did something we had never seen in Italy so far,” Sacchi told Mediaset.

“He played the last minutes of the game with a single central defender. He created a bit of confusion, but originated something we had never seen in this country.

“I must ask: is he a phenomenon or can he do whatever he wants with the team he has at his disposal? I reckon he is a phenomenon.”

E, he’s not taking it too well. He’s already making noises about how Barca can beat Inter at the Nou Camp.

Hate to admit it after this thrilling win, but he’s actually right. Our defence has been pretty leaky since, well, the last game against Barca. We need the likes of Chivu and Cuchu to get back to their best form for this game if we’re to stem the tide. I still think that Messi can easily burn Chivu and Zanetti for raw pace, but with Santon in the dog-house, Mourinho will surely persist with one of them.

Its possible that if Chivu doesn’t pick himself up in a couple of weeks, we’ll see Zanetti at LB, with Cuchu, Motta, Deki and Sneijder in midfield.

Despite coming alive in the last 5 minutes, I still have large question marks on Milito’s abilities at this level. He was anonymous for a large part of the game, even in the second half when we were pushing so much. All I saw was Sneijder, Eto’o and of course, Balotelli, Balotelli and more Balotelli up front.

But I loved the formation: I think it was a 4-2-3-1 with Deki and Motta as pivots, Eto’o, Sneijder and Balotelli playing behind Milito. Real masterstoke from Mourinho. Should be interesting to see if he ever tries it again.

I think Milito played well. I think, some of his passing ability we have seen in other games this season came as a bit of surprise and now might be a little expected. Have to consider that he has missed a fair amount of time.

He was the target man yesterday. I thought he did ok to do his best to hold the ball up top. Kyiv applied a lot of pressure on Inter and Milito did not have many options to lay the ball off. He made good at the most crucial of times when presented with the opportunity.

Sneijder, Eto’o and Balotelli were always going to be involved more in build up leaving Milito to find space. And I thought he proved to be an adequate target to move the ball up the field and displayed some good, smart touches. His one real mistake was not scoring his chance in the 1st half when one v one with the keeper.

He was good against Barca and pretty good yesterday. In his 2 CL appearances he did not look out of sorts and scored a goal that let us live to fight another day and opened a door to the knockout stages.

oh and not to forget that he did very well to keep the ball in and get it back into the 6 to set Sneijder’s winner.

I am very confident with Milito in the line up. He is proving to be a great signing!
