Er… What Just Happened?
By: Johonna | July 15th, 2009
Here we were, having fun in LA, horsing around and getting ready for our very first match of the new season, when WHAM! In swoop Barcelona and no more Maxwell. And for practically peanuts, too. Now, the deal isn’t completely finished but so far, it does not sound very promising for Inter. Besides all that, we have the friendly to talk about… oh, and new kits. Lets get at it.
This whole Maxwell deal has me very perplexed. He came to LA with the squad, he was training, looking happy, and then out of the blue, he is going to Barcelona.
According to Barcelona’s web page:
FC Barcelona and Inter Milan have reached the beginning of an agreement for the transfer of the Brazilian Scherrer Cabelino Maxwell Andrade “Maxwell” for a fee of 4.5 million Euros with an additional 0.5 million in variable payments.
Yep, you read that correctly – only 4.5 (or 5 if Maxi does really well) million Euro. Chump Change. Still, nothing is set in stone – note the phrase: beginning of an agreement. It could be that a player is coming back the other way. Who, you ask? I really could not say. Besides what I see during Champions League games, I dont know a darn thing about FC Barcelona. I just have to believe, though, that there is more to this deal than is being reported on because basically, if this is the way the deal stands, Inter just got hosed (estafados?).
First of all, Maxi is not perfect – he has some distribution problems and has been caught ball watching – but he is no slouch either. I know he was a bit pissy when Santon started getting a bit of play time, but I thought we had worked everything out. Inter had offered him a contract renewal and he seemed poised to sign. And now this. I am a tad flabbergasted. I know we have to trim four players from the squad, but shouldn’t we pick the bad ones to go (coughRivascough)? I wish him all the best, but wow, this is all so sudden. My question now is, does he play tomorrow or not?
THE VERY FIRST PRESEASON GAME
What: UCLA Bruins v Inter Milan
When: Thursday, July 16, 4pm pacific, 7pm eastern
Where: UCLA Campus
How to Watch: er… well, I will have to see about that. The Inter Channel is broadcasting so everyone cross you fingers for a stream (if you find one, post it). If not, there is always Inter Radio.
Yep, this is it, Inter’s first game of the 2009/2010 season (Hooray!). I dont know if anyone not subscribed to the Inter Channel will be able to see it, but I am happy the season has started (ish).
First off, Toldo will not be playing. He got a concussion on the first day of training and, while he looks to be ok, still needs to rest for a few more days. Since Julio Cesar is not in training yet (he and Maicon will not join the team until July 21 because they played in the Confederations Cup), that leaves Orlandoni or Belec in goal. Yikes.
That also has me a bit worried for the Club America and Chelsea games. Friendly or no, I want to win.
In defense, once again, no Maicon, and no Zanetti (on vacation until the 18th), so that means… I dont even know any more. The deal isn’t official for Maxwell yet, so does that mean he plays? Just in case? Will Mou play the squad he thinks is the best? Or will he throw in some of those members he would like to see go – you know, to show them off to the punters? He did say in his press conference that he would not play those who refused to leave (Vieira, I think he means you), did he mean it? Will everyone get a chance, or will he play it straight and make only three substitutions?
So many questions that I just dont have an answer for. So, how about this: who do YOU think Mou will play?

I would say this looks promising except for Mou clutching his head in the background.
After the game, the new kit will be presented at the Ricardo Montalbán Theater in Hollywood. Swanky. Sky and the Inter Channel will broadcast the event so there may even be a stream. I will be feverishly scouring the internet for one, so if anyone has something, post it please. Whatever the outcome, I will at least post pictures here as soon as they are available.
As for the upcoming World Football Challenge games: I know that many of you who frequent The Offside are going to attend at least one of these games. To help those of you who would like to meet up, I will post something up a couple days before each game to help you all coordinate. I have access to people’s email address so, if you request it, I can help you get in touch with one another without anyone having to broadcast their contact info over the internet. Whatever you all need, I am totally here for you!
FORZA INTER
Since I have no training pictures of Julio Cesar to share, here are some from the Bahamas where he is on vacation. The first is beefcake JC:

And now everyone all together: AAAAAWWWWW. I give you the very attractive Julio Cesar Family:

I know sport isn’t the best but they are a tad better than BS.com. I’m just going to assume its true. But I am bracing for heart break.

Sport.es are a media group, Kirby, much like AS, Marca, Gazzetta dello Sport et al. Their job is to make up stuff like this. Although it does seem like they’ve worded it very strongly – like they’re certain about every one of those details. I’d agree with Jnice, believe nothing till you see it on the official website(s).
Also, one bit that really ticks me off in that Sport.es article – apparently we’re going to pay 65m to Eto’o over 5 years. HELLO?? That’s 13 friggin million a season?! He’s not even half the player Ibra is! I highly doubt even Milan directors would be that stupid…

I would love to know what Mourinho is thinking right now!

If moratti thinks by losing one of the top five players in the world, we can still achieve champions league glory this season, he has to be kidding himself.

are you in my head buddy? cuz you’re thinking exactly what i am

Kirby, I was about to mention my heart-break about losing ronaldo after the wold cup 2002! I was so excited to see him play with inter after watching him win the golden boot! then he leaves….couldnt get over it! and now ibra…..
Actually it was because of Ronaldo I became an inter fan, in 97 I was 15 years old and fell in love with him. After he got sold, I still supported Inter and always will! But man Moratti has made it tough sometimes! lol

I’m trying to be optimistic…maybe eto’o wont agree to come to Inter, maybe Man City offers a huge sum of cash to Barca for Eto’o. Maybe Valencia quite dickin around and finally take 45mill for Villa…

It’s funny how im reading on the barca page as saying Ibra is the best striker in the world! Not one near mention of that on this side of story in regards to eto’o.

Moratti is a dumb ass if he goes throught with this
i doubt mourinho wants this deal to go throught no sane person would , if had any say in this we’d give them ibra but we’ll get messi in exchange ( i know thats not gonna but hey they want our best player then we want theirs )
now i think we really should sign arnautovic because if the clips of him are anything to go by then he will fill the void left by ZlatanPosted from

Barindiera, I can say a piece of me died inside when you bought el fenomeno from us in 97. He had that effect on people.

Arnautovic is not going to fill the void left by Ibra…these kinds of players dont grow on trees. If he does fill ibra’s shows it wont be for a couple years yet…Ibra didnt bloom until about 24-25 years of age.
Hey what wont Barca sell Messi to us for ibra and viera and 40mill? cuz they aint stupid….so why would we???

Actually jordi, I was just thinking of that.
I was thinking that this is finally Barca getting their due for us taking Ronaldo back then.Actually, I think we’d still owe you for that. Although Ronaldo didn’t get about playing for more than a couple of years, man he was pure genius. Star power at its maximum. Who knows, maybe Laporta is holding that over Moratti’s head to soften up the Ibra deal. Maybe that’s why we’re accepting a lousy deal for Ibra now…

barindera im not talking right away but from all the strikers ive seen play recently he is the closest thing to ibra , we could also go for cassano he may not be as strong as ibra but he is definitly as creative if not a bit more and he prolly wont choke on the big stage

MAD, if you think it is spam, delete it! This is your house too.
As for Ibra/Eto’o:
On one hand, I love Ibra, lots and lots and lots. I dont care about his attitude or missed sitters – I like him.On the other hand, I dont want an unhappy player at Inter. If he wants out, someone should show him the door.
My biggest problem is that this feels rushed and not really all that well thought out. Players are not like legos, they are not interchangeable. Just because Eto’o scores goals for Barca does not mean he will do it for Inter.
And then there is the whole Moratti issue. He was just starting to feel like maybe we could have some stability. I thought perhaps he had finally grown up and stopped thinking about Inter as his own private box of toy soldiers.

johonna thats been hard to tell lately
look at his recent interview it seems to me that he is going back to his old ways when mourinho says that this team isnt good enough for the CL he comes out and bark that mourinho is wrong and whatnotPosted from

“You do realize that in the world of mercato, more usually goes on than what the presidents and officials let out, right? In simpler terms:
1. “Absolutely no deal” = “They didn’t ask, but we may consider it if they do”
2. “We don’t want to sell him” = “They asked, and we’re thinking about it, but we don’t want our fans to panic”
3. “No comments” = “Negotiations are going on even as we speak”
4. “We’re in negotiations” = “A deal’s almost done, barring something extraordinary””Well, duh… duh… I guess I am just too duh… duh… dumb to say duh… duh… too much more about the duh… duh… subject… duh… duh….
Oh! Cookie! duh… duh…

I honestly feel Mourinho can only better this club in many ways on and OFF the pitch! If Moratti loses being on the same page with mourinho so quickly, he really needs someone with a global business sense to run this club for/with, not a family business! We are still far behind juve/milan as far as global marketing goes.
ps. juve/milan fans I dont need your input on this.

Since I am far too ignorant to be able to comment on Inter’s transfer policy, I’ll just post a link to the new kits that Inter just unveiled.
Unlike all the panic, tears, self pity and rampant speculation, this is from the official website:

If I could have any two players it would be Ibra and Messi. Lucky bastards

Barindera, some of us over in Barca-land don’t believe that Eto’o is the best striker in the world. If you analyze the numbers, for example, yes Eto’o scores in bunches, but he fattens up against bottom feeders. Thierry Henry, for example had a much higher percentage of shots to shots on goal, and scored more against the top 5 sides in the Liga.
But they call me an Eto’o hater over there.
The deal isn’t done yet, and could all fall apart. So sit tight, everyone. We could still be stuck with Eto’o. Though I say that if a player wants to leave, it doesn’t behoove a club to keep him. Bayern just turned down 70 million pounds from Chelsea for Ribery? Yikes!
