FC Internazionale Milano v Juventus: Yikes

By: Johonna | October 2nd, 2010

Maicon juggles the ball and finishes with a perfect volley

In 1967, sports journalist Gianni Brera coined the term Derby d’Italia to describe this tie. At the time, Inter and Juventus were the two biggest teams with the most honors between them. Since then, things have changed a little. Juve still have the most scudetti but Milan have saddly overtaken Inter on the European honors front. None the less, the rivalry continues. And with Torino in Serie B, this may be the closest thing to a real derby Juve has right now. Juve come to Milan at sort of an interesting time for Inter. Sure, we have been playing better, but appearantly, so have they. In addition, this season it is Inter with the full infirmary. I will admit, I want to win this game so baddly that I can taste it.

What: All That is Right and Good (ie Inter) v The Forces of Evil (ie Juve)
Where: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Milan
When: Sunday, October 3, 8:45pm local time (11:45am pacific, 2:45pm eastern)
How to Watch: Live on FSC (other channels here) or find a stream (MyP2P, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net
Liveblog: Kirby? What do you say? My liveblogs are totally cursed now.

Once again, party at Kirby’s house for the game. Come 15 minutes before kickoff (and I think it is BYOB).

A LITTLE HISTORY

Inter and Juve have a long history of rivalry – at least some 50 years of it. Some think that the rivaly goes back to the 1960/1 campaign and the famouse 9-1 Juventus win. The story goes that second-place Inter came to Turin in April of 1961 to take on first place Juventus. Inter were only four points behind and had already beaten Juve 3-1 earlier that season in Milan. Unfortunately, so many fans turned up for the game (far more than the stadium could hold), that about 5,000 fans spilled out of the stands to watch the game from the sidelines, some even making thier way onto the Inter bench. Despite this, the game started as planned but half an hour into the first half, the referee ordered the game abandoned because of the Juventus supporters on the pitch. According to the rules, Inter was awarded a 2-0 win (Juventus was a awarded a simular win under similar circumstances a couple years previous to this ruling).

Juventus appealed the decision to the FIGC and on the last day of the season, just before kickoff of the last game, the court ruled that Inter’s win would be repealed and the game would have to be replayed. In the eyes of Inter supporters and players, this ruling virtually handed Juve the championship. To make matters worse, the head of the FIGC at the time was Umberto Agnelli, the president of Juventus (and father of the current club chairman, Andrea Agnelli). Inter president Angelo Moratti (father of the current president, Massimo Moratti) and coach Helenio Herrera decided that they would field Inter’s youth team for that replay in protest. Inter would play the game but it would be shown for the farce they felt it to be. The outcome was the 9-1 destruction of Inter by Juve and the birth of a rivalry that continues to this day. It is a bit staggering to think that events that occured 50 years ago are still coloring how people view this game today but fans have long memories and the legend of that game lives on.

Since then, there have been more controversial games with dubious outcomes that have only served to fuel the fire. In 1998, Ronaldo’s famously denied penalty made the rivalry relavant to a whole new generation of Inter fans. The calciopoli scandels brought the issue into the twentyfirst century, and, although tempers have cooled somewhat, it still simmers just below the surface. Inter fans are still on their guard, looking for any infraction, any reason to point the finger and cry foul or favoritism. This rivalry is so intense that it has become one of the defining elements for both fan bases. To say you are an Interista automatically implies that you loath Juventus, you cant be one without the other (and vise-versa, I’m sure).

Given all this history, all the drama, all the emotion, it is clear that when Inter and Juventus play, it can never be just a simple game of football.

Juve and Inter have played 90 Serie A games in Milan. And Yipee, Inter has either won (42) or drawn (28) most of them, and has outscored them 157 goals to 100. See, now that is a fun fact I can really get behind. As I am sure you all remeber, last season Inter won this match 2-0 after a wonder goal from Maicon and a little insurace from Eto’o. Bask in the glory of the highlights below:

THEM

Eeeewwwww. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Lets just say I have strong emotions toward Juve; a deep, all encompassing loathing that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and an overall need to shower. If you would like to know more about them, there is a handy board just next door. I am sure Aaron or Roberto will get something up.

All kidding aside (although I really did just throw up a bit), Juve is never ever an easy match. It doesn’t matter where they are on the table, how many injuries they may have, or how generally mid-table they may be, Juve will always find that extra little bit somewhere when they play Inter. Drives me nuts.

More Group Hugs
So, can we finally put these rumors of locker-room troubles to rest?

US

Rafa has called up 20 players:

Portieri: Julio Cesar, Castellazzi, Orlandoni;
Difensori: Cordoba, Lucio, Maicon, Materazzi, Chivu, Santon;
Centrocampisti: Stankovic, Sneijder, Muntari, Mariga, Cambiasso, Obi, Coutinho, Flipper;
Attaccanti: Eto’o, Milito, Biabiany.

It looks like Zanetti, Samuel, and Pandev are still injured. I am sure they will be back after the international break (Samuel and Zanetti have been excused for the Argentina friendly against Japan).

As for the presser today, I think Rafa pretty much summed it up the whole thing when he answered: “Excuse me, but I must dribble your question a little.” That is pretty much what he did the whole conference. The press tried desperately to get Benitez to say something controversial about Juventus but all he would say was the usual platitudes: Juve is hard, we need to be good, we can win with the fan’s support, let’s just think about football and the game on the pitch. zzzzzzzzzz….

The journalists then moved to getting Rafa to give something away about the formation he would use and which players he would start. Well, there was nothing doing on that topic, either. Basically, Rafa just droned on about balance and how if a player was called, that meant he was ready to play. Really, Rafa is much better at Mou at saying absolutely nothing to the press. In the end, Mou would always get drawn out about something – he just couldn’t help himself. Rafa, on the other hand, can dish out platitudes and double speak all day, it seems.

So, where does that leave us with the formation…

La Gazzetta thinks it will go:
predicted lineup against Juve
(btw, you know you are in trouble when you need a scroll bar for the injured).

Which may not be such a bad idea. I thought Coutinho played well against Werder Bremen, but Juve players will break your leg just as soon as look at you. I would hate for his little body to be all stamped on by those lumbering oxen. In any event, if you disagree be sure to post your lineup prediction in the comments. You too could be declared the Grand Imperial Poobah of All Things Inter and be awarded a certificate to prove it.

Well, I am going to have to cut this short (ha ha, over 1000 words now) as I have to go support my local team. I wont make any predictions because those scare the crap out of me. I dont even like the fact that we seem to be favored by the bookies – it smacks of hubris and nothing gets you smacked down faster than a sense of hubris. Instead, I will say my prayers to the Calcio Gods. I will light my candles and burn my incense. I will think positive, happy thoughts. Because, really, all I want this weekend is a win. Just one, simple little win. And it isn’t even about standings at this point. It is about doing what is right, about keeping the forces of darkness and evil at bay one more time, about slaying the beast and freeing the land of their tyranny. Well, ok, maybe not that last bit, but they really do need beating.

To the poster:- Juventus are the forces of evil? Well, I could go on and elaborate with facts a lot. But you are not worth it. And for the same reason, FUCK OFF [edited by Johonna - no personal insults please].

  • To the Commenter: - You have a potty mouth. If you cannot write something constructive, dont bother writing anything at all. Also, we have a no personal insult policy here. Your comment will be modified accordingly.

  • Dennis Juve

Well, I was excited to see how you are going to modify that personal insult, but you disappointed me by simply removing it. It isn't exactly 'modification'. Perhaps, you could use something like 'I suffer from incest' or something like that. Come on, you indirectly mentioned you're constructive. Let me see it. :D

  • Dennis Juve

Well, you are a hypocrite. Your jealous ridden comment directed against Juventus was totally immature and futile and now you are advising people about writing something constructive?? Get a life.

  • But just to be clear: I think Juve are evil. I am pretty sure every single squad member steals candy from children, insults the elderly, and eats live puppies before each game. I suspect Juventus is behind global warming and the economic downturn but I cant prove that... yet.

  • Why must Interistas bitch around like this???So disgusting

  • Wow. You need to get a sense of perspective. I write a blog for Inter supporters. I dont like Juve. Every single one of the Inter fans who read this blog feels the same way. The fact that you dont really doesn't concern me. Jealous? Nope. Immature? Probably but so what. Everyone else seemed to understand that it was hyperbole - you know, a little trash talk before a big game. That is what happens on sports blogs. What I didn't do, though, is go to the rival team's site and call individuals names for not agreeing with my viewpoint. And I am not advising - I am telling you the rules. The rules that I make as queen empress of Inter on the Offsides (even better, I get to enforce them as well). I would also suggest that the person who spends his time trolling and spouting swear words should perhaps take their own advice before dishing it out to others who are happily minding their own business.

  • Dennis Juve

So you admit you're immature. Those who read and 'enjoy' your blog must then be idiots.
"The fact that you dont really doesn't concern me." :- Well, I don't think so as you wrote a two paragraphs in replying to my caustic remarks and it provoked you so much that you cared to write a BIG reply to me. Thats jealousy, kiddo.
"Everyone else seemed to understand that it was hyperbole - you know, a little trash talk before a big game.":- True, your blogs belong to the trash cans. :D
"That is what happens on sports blogs":- Nope, its not. I am much more of a blogger than you.
"What I didn't do, though, is go to the rival team's site and call individuals names for not agreeing with my viewpoint.":- Do I seem to care about your viewpoints? Your whole blog is nothing but a piece of shit. Only reason why I replied to you is because I didn't like your "Juve- forces of evil" usage. Inter's blog in offside is one of the least intelligent and sensible and I never cared to comment here. If you think your view points got me sick, then psychiatry has got a clear definition for your thought disorder- Grandiose delusions.
"And I am not advising - I am telling you the rules. The rules that I make as queen empress of Inter on the Offsides (even better, I get to enforce them as well).":- Seriously, your rules mean shit to me. Let me insult you now. Fuck off, you piece of pea brained shit. :D
"I would also suggest that the person who spends his time trolling and spouting swear words should perhaps take their own advice before dishing it out to others who are happily minding their own business. ":- Sure thing, empress! :D

Hey Dennis Juve, F.U.C.K. O.F.F. from here. This is Inter's house, our house, and WE set the rules. You're just a visitor. You don't like it here -- please FUCK OFF.

  • Dennis could not play nicely with others. He has been moderated.

I love Juve trolls. They have such a sense of entitlement, it's wonderful to watch them wig out.

  • Crazy, right?

  • MAD

It's come to this, when we draw, even the trolls treat it like a loss.

When we win there's no one trolling here. They are soooo thrilled that we didn't get a full three points that they come here to cheer...

    Very funny...

  • I am not here to troll

juve trolls, no one here honestly gives a rat's ass about what you have to say, as far as the game is concerned, it was a surprisingly open game, I was surprised at how well juve played. I honestly expected us to shaft them right from the start and finally give them a thrashing that has been long overdue. Juve had their chance in the first half with Krasic crossing and julio cesar barely getting to it and then with quags in the second, we really should have put away our chances though, maicon and milito normally dont miss those chances, this is worrying. I know for a FACT that mourinho would never have lost this game, how do I know? Because towards the end of the game we really just died off and it looked as though none of the players had any urgency to get the ball forward and score, mourinho would have never allowed this. We started well but couldn't maintain our good start, I will tolerate this result so long as we beat juve away from home. It will be the last derby d'italia in that stadium and we haven't beaten them in torino since 2004 or 2005, cant remember. I will tolerate this result so long as we dont play like this against bilan in the derby. We better play a HELLUVA lot better against cagliari and the other teams that we're playing against. Benitez your critics say that you're more of a cup competition man than a domestic league man, please for our sakes prove them wrong.

  • Stankovic admitted as much in his last Gazzetta interview.

  • Drewsef

So I'm taking the absence of any commentary here to mean that there's a live blog somewhere. Anyway, what a lame tease of a match. Thoughts:

    1. I don't think any one player is playing particularly badly, but the lack of focus and cohesion on the team is something that Rafa needs to answer for. Except for Coutinho, every single player out there has been playing brilliantly together for at least a year, and probably know exactly when each of their teammates wakes up, what they eat for breakfast, the contents of their iPods, etc... and yet at times they look like they hardly know each other. I know, I know, Rafa wants to make this HIS team, and that's all well and good. But when you try and distinguish yourself and it just ends up throwing things out of whack that worked like clockwork before, that's a bad sign.

    2. Eto'o is the only hungry-looking player out there. Fortunately, he is the player who could potentially carry the whole team on his back, but it just sucks to watch him make these jaw-dropping runs, both on and off the ball, and there's no one there to help him out.

    3. Milito needs more confidence. Sneijder needs a little less confidence.

    4. Since this is Inter-Juve, and it ended in a draw, conversation is always going to go back to the penalty calls. First off, the Chiellini foul on Sneijder: Was it a foul? Yes, it was -- he had both arms all but wrapped around Wesley's neck. But Wes did himself no favors by dropping like a feather there -- it was lame to watch. Wrong call, but I'm not gonna get too pissed about it. Bonucci, however, could have been sent off for any two of his three bookable fouls. Meh, what're you gonna do? Forget it Jake, it's Juventus...

  • Inter Inter

Maybe he's so carried away by his new found chance to personal glory this season that he doesn't realise he's leaving his team-mates behind.....perhaps they're losing sight of him and losing some heart...

  • Wondermaker

I hope you think Lucio should have been sent off as well? Come on let's be fair, a draw was the right result and both teams had good and bad calls.

  • MAD

We will/have never gotten those calls against this team. See the video above.

And we won't get them against Chiellini especially.

  • Guest

    true enough

  • Okay then, who are we gonna get for a new coach?

  • Vinod

    ^Dislike.

  • I just dont feel Rafa is passionate enough. We need someone on the sidelines kicking some inter butt - pushing the team on - from the sidelines. Rafa just sits on the bench and looks agitated. I dont like it. Mancini was the same way. We need more intensity from a coach

  • Sandy

At one point I thought Rafa was sleeping...

  • Avinesh

I completely agree with you ,

I can't speak about the second half because I went to work and hence missed it but I felt the same thing. It's known that Inter/Juve fans have a fierce rivalry but I felt like he just understand how this game was important for us(the fans), not only in the context of the league but also for bragging rights. He needs to show authority.

  • In all seriousness, give Rafa some more time. He's not a terrible manager and he's in a brand new league. As for intensity, he's never been known to be the OCD/very vocal type of manager like Delneri is for example.

You guys are FAR from needing to change your manager already and even allowing such rumors to surface would simply make everything worse. The Serie A is still inter's to lose.

  • I guess that cerebrally I understand that, viscerally, not so much. It doesn't help that I am emotionally bonded with the players so when I get angry at a performance, it is just natural to take it out on the new guy - Rafa.

The truth is probably more that I am a bit of a drama queen and I liked that Mou danced on the sidelines when I danced, raged when I raged, and generally mirrored what I was feeling. I just need to calm the F down occasionally and breath.

But what's the fun in that?

  • INTERIST

Don`t get me wrong, but maybe now you should try support Real Madrid instead of Inter..

  • Er, because I dont like Rafa? How exactly am I supposed to get you right? I just find it frustrating, that, after all these years, someone finally built a team that really worked. A team that worked not only in the Serie A but also in Europe (40 years is a loooooong time) and now someone seems to be disassembling that machine. Which I find frustrating.

How does that make me a bad fan exactly? Are we not allowed to ever question? Ever disagree? Well, that is not the kind of person I am. I have loved this team through thick and thin and I always want the best for it. That means I want the best players, the best coach, the best staff, and if I think for a moment that they are not the best, then I will call them out. They all exist to serve the team - the greater whole - if they cant/wont do that, then I feel I have every right to point that out.

  • LOL. Yeah ,you guys should start supporting Real Madrid.

  • fandibong

I don't think it's a good idea to change coach... fact is we won't... I think many people now likes our team style of play... but agree and understand totally what you're saying... Mou would look so angry with the draw, while Rafa would look like he's happy with a draw

  • fandibong

  • Vinod

I have to go with Gazzetta's lineup this time. Juventus have possibly the league's worst fullbacks, and it would be criminal to not throw Eto'o and Biabiany at them. I just hope Eto'o can make the Juventus fullbacks crap his shorts the way he did to that Bari defender. It wouldn't be a great idea to go with two central strikers this time -- good as Eto'o and Milito are together, they would simply get roughed up by Chiellini and Bonucci. Its better that one guys takes the hit (Milito) and leaves the other free on the wing to wreak havoc (Eto'o).

  • MAD

Rafa heard you. 4231 it is.

I'll never, ever understand the exact process by which one becomes an Inter fan. Even Milan I might understand, but Inter? What does Inter stand for, really? Any values, traditions? Italy? Nope.

  • Guest

xenophobic? is that what you got from the message? wow.
i am a mix of five ethnicities myself, i don't think i've ever come close to xenophobia. by your comment, however, i suspect traces of homophobia, something you might want to work on.

my point is simple: even a team like inter, with a long history of multiculturalism, cannot sustain a club CULTURE without legendary italian players. mercenaries take a team only so far.

if you disagree, you do not know the history of your own team. ask altobelli, the last real italian gentleman, a real class act, who played for your team.

  • So legendary players like Zanetti (over 700 appearances), Cordoba (over 400 appearances), Cambiasso (over 250 appearances), Materazzi (over 250 appearances) are not good enough?

What mercenaries are you speaking of? Chivu, who says that Inter is the team of his dreams and he will never leave? Stankovic, who wants to retire with Inter because says he could never wear another club shirt again? Pandev, who is an Inter youth product and thrilled to be home? Or is it the new guys this season... Oh wait, that's right, our only new guys are a backup keeper (who is crazy excited to have made his Champions League debut) and Coutinho (who has actually been on the books for two years).
Eto'o - I will give you that. He is probably a mercenary but he is also one of the most professional players I have ever seen.
And I know the history of my team, just so happens, I dont agree with you.

Besides, seems to me that Juve is the team with the 80% turnover rate this season. Seems to me, if you are looking for mercenaries maybe you should take a look in your own back yard.

What's the big deal about the "only true Italian team". Who gives a shit whether it's truly Italian or truly Mongolian? In my country the Italian Alfa Romeo was once a much sought-after car. That was 30 years ago. Today nobody wants one because it's so damn unreliable. People here mostly drive the Mercs, BMW, Lexus, Toyotas and Hondas. Who cares where it's made? It sells because it's GOOD! What happened to the "only true Italian team in South Africa earler this year?

  • inteR9

HAHA i can so easily tell ur a juve fan because u sound so dumb. "Even Milan" and "i might understand".. Milan is the most successful club in europe, even more so then RM and you are still dissing them? what does inter stand for? doesnt take a genius to figure it out just by reading the name.. which should also tell you why there are not many italians in the squad.. if inter had italians in the squad, they would have finished 7th.. (let's see if you can figure out how i came to that conclusion since you don't understand how one becomes an inter fan). my self i was amazed by ronaldo, hence i loved inter and have stuck with inter since then.. but i guess i understand your hate, the bitterness of winning nothin gets to you, but i get it. A shirt with no spirit in it?? i think you should go over to the juve board and discuss what your team needs to do to fix things. Its because of people like you that i HATE juventus.. You are [edited by Johonna] understand other teams and your hate comes from nowhere.. just type inter milan on google and even that will help you.. But since u said u will never understand... i guess that says it all.. see you tomorro when juve gets destroyed and you start bitching about the ref again

  • You seem just a bit flustered, is everything okay?

  • inteR9

    lol yes everything is okay

  • Ok. So I put this on the other post, but please remember, no personal insults. Feel free to insult the team, the game, the idea, but not the person - which includes calling them stupid.

It may seem like a silly rule, but it helps keep things out of the "I know you are, but what am I" level of discussion.

  • Nikko10

sorry. Im at fault as well. emotions running a bit high, specially a Juventino going out on a limb to say something ingenuous.

  • inteR9

ok jo my bad. i will keep it down haha. it was very difficult to find an easier way to express the same emotion. i just don't understand why people don't just say "we will kick your ass" or something like that instead of insulting with no real point

  • Vinod

Your persistence is admirable, but really, what's the point?

  • Just trying to create a better world, Vinod.

  • I just keep rubbing salt in the wounds.... I cant help it.... I still love him so

  • MAD

    JC
    Maicon, Lucio, Cordoba, Chivu
    Mariga, Cuchu
    Jon Boy, Sneijder, Eto'o
    Milito

I know, I know. It'll be Deki instead of Mariga. But I think that we need more beef in the middle.

  • kirby

I'll do it for sure... 15 minutes before game time as usual! Forza Inter!!!!

  • Kabir (the other one)

    JC
Maicon Lucio Cordoba Chivu (We might see Santon)
    Stankovic Mariga Cambiasso
    Sneijder
    Milito Eto'o

Out of curiosity, who is "Flipper"?

  • MAD

Flipper is Mancini, because his forehead is large, pronounced and deflects sonar like a dolphin.

    Hence, Like A Virgin.

    Errrr... I mean, Flipper...

  • Vinod

I like Dolphins. Calling Mancini one is an insult to a beautiful species.

  • I can't help it that Mancini looks like a porpoise. I am not really trying to insult anyone (or any thing). I am just drawing the comparison. It would be handy, though, if Mancini could stun defenders with his sonar. And hey, maybe we could tap him for some ambergris - that stuff is still worth something, right?

  • Kabir

That's too nice a nickname for him...

  • inteR9

Julio; Maicon, Lucio, Cordoba, Santon, Stankovic, Cambiasso, Biabiany, Snjeider, Eto , Milito..

Forca inter, come on lets kick so Juve ass!!! Fuck biabiany is so fast

  • This is the most beautiful rivalry of italian football, the derby d'Italia. After calciopoli this rivalry's become even bigger than before. Milan is winning (but there was a penalty for Parma...) and now has 11 points, we've to win tomorrow and I'm affiant

  • I can't say I disagree that they need a beating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think Milito will play hopefully he gets his form back because am ready to call on Eto'o as a main striker if Milito f's this up.

As for formation I think La Gazetta is right, Coutinho is too young to start a game like this but if Milito sucks I wouldn't think twice about bringing in Coutinho and putting Eto'o up front.

JC; Maicon; Lucio, Cordoba; Chivu; Stank, Cambiasso; Biabiany, Sneijder, Eto'o; Milito.
