Gaze Into My Crystal Ball

By: Johonna | October 11th, 2008

Ok, as much fun as I was having with the ol’ rumor mill, I suppose we could actually use this time for something constructive. To wit: the upcoming winter mercato.

One of the regulars around here (MAD) has seemingly gotten tired of the beefcake pictures that I tend to post when nothing else is happening and has thoughtfully posted some questions (see below, pardon my paraphrasing). As is only fair, I will take first stab — that way you can all chime in and tell me how wrong I am.

1) Is Inter going to participate in the winter mercato?

I think so, yes. Even with our current injury crisis, Mourniho is still looking to trim the squad. I think Crespo will finally be on his way. I also wonder about Dacourt and Stankovic. Rivas is out until next year so he is not an issue. I think Inter are still looking for a place for Obinna and maybe Jimenez to go on loan. That, coupled with Figo out for an unspecified amount of time, means we may be in the market for one more midfielder.

2) Does Inter need any more/different players or do we already have a squad that can win the Scudetto and/or the Champions League?

Right now we are desperate for defenders but hopefully, all that will be cleared up by the time Christmas rolls around. I think we have a pretty good squad. The players just need time to come together as a team. New coach, new playing style, new players — it may take a couple months (or 3) for things to really click. That said, it would be nice to have a second Cambiasso-type player. Suggestions anyone?

3) If Inter does not participate in the winter mercato, which team is likely to?

Well, Lazio is doing hunky-dorey, so is Napoli and Fiorentina. Whether or not Juve or Roma hit the market will depend on the injury situation come December. Milan may be looking for a defender – or at least that is the rumbling I have heard over at the Milan board. I think Cagliari or Bologna may bring in someone to start scoring some goals.

4) Do the teams that may be in a shopping mood look like they will meet the goals they have set for the season (ie, achieve a champions league or UEFA spot, win the scudetto, whatever)?

Right now, Roma do not look like they are ready to take the Scudetto or the Champions League. Of course, that may change in a month, Roma is nothing if not scrappy in the face of adversity. Juve and Milan could be contenders, mostly just because both teams expect to win. But then Udinese is on track to challenge for a Champions League spot, too. This one has me a bit stumped because it is such early, early days. I think we should come back to this question in December.

Ok everyone else, Your turn.

Oh, and just because I can, here is a little vintage Toldo.

More Radoi stories all over the papers this morning.

They are desperate to come up with something to keep the Fascist Ultras off the front page.

There is a small ray of sunshine over Milan for Inter. It turns out Patrick Vieira’s injury is not very serious and he will be back training on Tuesday.

Also, since Adriano has accumulated too many cards, he is suspended for the Brazil v Columbia and is coming back to Milan early. Hurray. Not so nice is that same article said that Maicon was sick and throwing up during the half in the Venezuela game – I hope he is alright.

Stop it, Alessio, you will jinx it. :)

You cant discount Roma, they are scappy. I would be overjoyed at a 1-0, to tell you the truth. Clean sheet, 3 points, and I go to bed happy that night.

did you just say clean sheet and you goto bed happy? :) nice mised metaphor there.

i can’t see Roma holding that inter team the way Maldini did in the Derby…too powerful for a team with one centreback and a selection of gimps for a defensive line. I DO expect roma to have at least one red card in the game.

(hope thats jinxed it for you)!

I bet that Mourinho keeps it tight. We won’t go forward unless we slow it down and bring up the numbers. We don’t want to get into a game of counters. We want to defend well and then attack with numbers… in my opinion.

If anyone wants to have a real good laugh, i suggest that you read Chris’s current blog post on the Roma Offsides. In it one could find this:

“Three-match ban for Mexes [saying not nice things to official]. Were this Ivan Cordoba or Maicon, rest assured they would’ve been hit with a fine at the very most.”

Okay think quick: Player screaming obscenities the ref for having the audacity to be on the pitch and have a ball hit him.

Here’s a hint: At least the player didn’t spit on the referee but he did scream obscenities that the television audience could read from his lips.

Was there a red card fro this incident? Was there even a fine? If Inter is soooo favored by the refs that Maicon or Ivan would only get a fine for this offense, what does this say about the way that Roma is favored? Or about how big a hypocrite Chris and all the RomaTrolls are?

I just wanted to amend my above post:

The ball never hit the ref (I got it mixed up with a different situation), in fact the video shows that the ref was:

    A. in the space that the ball was crossed to first.
    B. out of the way of the play by backing up.
    C. about a meter away when the mystery player actually kicked the ball.

Here’s the video for you to enjoy and marvel at Roma Offsides hypocrites:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EP9mP1YEbM

Mystery Player did get a fine: all of 1000 euros. Considering that Mystery Player was at the time the highest paid player in Serie A, I don’t even consider it a fine.

The only member of this fracas banned was teh ref (I am not even sure that he is a referee anymore). Apparently the yellow was too harsh.

And, to be fair, the FIGC has made a point this season of cracking down on this sort of behavior.

And Mexes did behave like an ass what with the little tantrum and all.

And when I watch the highlights again, it looks like he got sent off for a second yellow card due to the foul. I think the ban is because he had a hissy fit over the second card – as opposed to the card being for the hissy fit.

    I hope that makes sense.

And just because I am fair and balanced… Three Inter fans have been banned from going to games (forever?) because they “smeared” one of the barriers in the stands during the Torino-Inter match. I really dont want to know with what. In any event, here it is in the original Italian:

i tre tifosi interisti – C.S. di 21 anni, D.F. di 22 anni e V.A. di 20 anni – sono indagati a piede libero per travisamento in occasione di manifestazioni pubbliche e per aver imbrattato una delle barriere divisorie dello stadio Olimpico. Nei loro confronti sono state avviate anche le procedure per il Daspo, il divieto di partecipare alle manifestazioni sportive.

And the link to the article.

Johonna the point of Chris’ post that I found really funny was the hypocritical point that Inter players are sooooo favored then there would be no ban. Completely forgetting the fact that not only did Totti not get a ban, not only did he not get a red card, his 1000 euro fine was laughable and THE REF was banned.

Oh and it also discounts the red card and 1 game suspension Materazzi received for doing exactly what Chris said Inter players WOULDN’T get in trouble for doing.

    What a dick.

Oh and in the highlight package that I provided above, there was a red card offense by a Roma player right before the cross that the ref didn’t call, more Roma favoritism from this game.

You know, I don’t think the Gazetta reported it in it’s “expose” last season… hmmm.

I also take exception with the quote he posted but I really have no desire to argue with the regulars at the Roma board.

I think there is a clear difference in saying that the referee won the game, not Milan (as Ibra said) and that the referee helped Inter (as Totti did). In the latter, Totti is implying that the referee is biased, in the former Ibra is saying that the the referee was pivotal in the outcome of the game. In no way did Ibra suggest that the ref was somehow corrupt or biased.

At least that is my opinion.

There is no comparison between the three examples.

In one, Totti is screaming obscenities to the ref’s, insulting him to his face during a game.

In the quote that Chris copies, Ibra gives his opinion of the ref’s performance after the game, to whit, it stunk.

In the second part of Chris’ cobbled together quote (the reason why he put them together and include them in the Mexes/Totti discussion I have no idea) Totti comes out and says the ref is dirty.

The difference that a child in grade school could understand: Ibra didn’t act disrespectful to anyone. In both instances Totti insulted the ref, once to his face and got away with it. The second time, he called the ref bought for.

The real difference: Comedy like this guy, I should have to pay for :)

More comedy, I really laughed when I read this.

Apparently yesterday, alessio had the nerve to say something critical about Roma on the Roma offsides.

A poster from the Roma offsides took offense to this and told alessio that he shouldn’t go on the Roma blog and say insulting things about Roma.

Since then I have been waiting at my window for the other three horsemen to show up.

Yeah, well, they are full of contradictions. They accuse Inter of getting away with dissent when their capitano, pretty much went as far as you can go, and got the smallest slap on the wrist I’ve ever seen.

Somehow being the victim is being wrong over there. Del Piero is a pussy for being slapped around by Cufre’, and Poulsen is the jackass for Totti hocking all over him. I don’t go there to troll, just point out some hypocrisy. I’m full of it too, I know.

Then we got into the is-Totti-classy-debate? As you can see, I only left two comments. Sometimes it’s just not worth it. I agree with them that sometimes him going nuts shows his utter passion for his side, but again, can’t have it both ways. On Juve’s side, we have Nedved who loses it occasionally (Alright, this might be the wrong blog to bring Nedved’s actions up on) but he’s not passionate, he’s a dirty thug. Make a choice.

For the record, Nico is one tough mofo (or, he has a particularly tough skull). This is what Franco Combi, Inter’s chief doctor, had to say this morning:

“I’ve spoken with Nicolas, and he’s fine. He told me he took a blow to the head but he was back to normal by the end of the game and he returned to Argentina with his team-mates. Nicolas has a slight headache but he told me not to worry. He said he’ll return to Italy [on Friday] as scheduled.”

I just hope that someone thinks to give this guy and MRI – he has been knocked unconscious twice in a month, that can’t be good.
