Genoa – Inter: A Chance at Redemption

By: Johonna | March 7th, 2009

Suazo scores for Inter
What: Genoa v Inter
Where: Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genoa
When: Saturday, March 7, 6pm local time (9am pacific, 12 noon eastern)
How to Watch: Live on Fox Soccer Channel, or streaming in the usual places: MyP2P, Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).

Off we go, back to Genoa, back to the site of our recent humiliation – hopefully this time we will be on the right side of the 3-0 scoreline. Hell, I would be overjoyed at a simple 1-0 in our favor. This is our shot to shake off the Genoa heeby-geebies – to get back to winning and show, that although we were thoroughly stamped, we have the grit to get back up and do a little stamping ourselves. There, are we all properly motivated? Good.

Last year, this fixture ended in a one-all-draw (Suazo and Borriello), but we played much of the game with 10 men (Pelé was sent off in the first half), and Ibra had that knee injury that dogged him most of last spring. This time, we go back to face a well-organized team that plays fast, attacking, physical football. Worse yet, they have yet to loose at home. Genoa will be an incredibly tough nut to crack, especially seeing as there is that Champions League game coming up (shudder). Plus, this time they have Milito. He is a scoring machine. Inter will have to be on their tippiest of toes to bring three points back to Milan.

One last chance for the crusader jersey

As a special ending to Inter’s centenary year, the team will wear last year’s red and white away kit for tomorrows game. In an act of marketing genius, they are also offering the jersey at the Inter Store. If you want one, it is apparently now or never.

But back to the game.

Here is what happened last year:

US

Mourinho has convened 21 players:

Portieri: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni;
Difensori: Cordoba, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Rivas, Santon;
Centrocampisti: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Jimenez, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Bolzoni;
Attaccanti: Ibrahimovic, Adriano, Crespo, Balotelli.

Chivu and Samuel are both still on the injured list, Vieira is suspended, and Cruz is still paying for being crap in the last CL game. He didn’t say why Maxwell was not called up – curious.

A relaxed and fully saunaed Mourinho was decided less chatty at today’s press conference.

In it, he discussed such things as his vacation plans (Africa and the US), and how long he will stay at Inter (2, 4, 10 years, who knows?), and that Ibrahimovic, Cambiassio, Stankovic, Santon, and Julio Cesar will start. He hinted that Burdisso will play also. Yep, Nico – who would have thought I would be actually happy to see his name on the call-up list. For all his faults, Nico is at least a step above Rivas. I get a sinking feeling just thinking about Nelson on the pitch.

Mou did have a little zinger though. The journalists asked him if, given his good showing against Sampdoria, Crespo would play tomorrow. Mou replied:
I do not know, is difficult to make an assessment. But if you were the coach of Inter, you would play Ibrahimovic and Crespo?

Ouch.

So, given our call-up, it is pretty clear what most of the formation will look like:

Julio Cesar
Maicon — some combination of Cordoba, Burdisso, and Materazzi — Santon
Zanetti — Cambiasso — Muntari/Figo
Stankovic
Adriano/Balotelli — Ibrahimovic

Depending on how things go, we may even see Jimenez or Mancini. Mou sometimes surprises us like that.

Milito - Dangerous in front of goal

THEM

This time, I dont have to do this part at all. The oh-so-mysterious “J” has written a preview from the Genoa point of view. Go check it out.

For our purposes, it is important to note that almost a third of their goals have come in the last 15 minutes of play. Luckily, that is one of our stronger periods – we have only conceded one goal all season after the 76th minute.

Genoa is a good team; they are coming into this match with a strong home record and everything to play for. They are in fifth place, just one point off of Fiorentina and three off Milan. Three points for them this weekend may see them mount a serious challenge for a top-four finish. They are, in a word, dangerous.

—————-
Ok, lets get down to brass tacks.

Juve are almost sure to take full points against a struggling Torino. If we are incredibly, unbelievably lucky, Toro will hold them to a draw, but I would not hold my breath if I were you.

Milan meets Atalanta on Sunday. The thing about Atalanta is you just never know which team will show up. Will it be the one that soundly thrashed Inter and Roma? Or the one that gets thumped by Reggina? Who can say.

Milan will be out for blood – especially given Galliani’s little ultimatum to Ancelotti. Really, this game could go either way. I will assume that Milan will win.

Where does that leave us?

Well, in one of those “must win” situations. On the up side, Inter is used to being in these situations. I mean, we lived off them for 2 months last season, right? Pressure is Inter’s middle name! (F.C.Pressure Internazionale?)

With the Champions League just around the corner, though, nerves will be high. And given our stupendously horrific defensive performance against Sampdoria and Roma, I am slightly worried. Milito is just the guy to make us pay if certain center backs nod off again (Marco, Nico, Ivan… dont make me pull this blog over).

In our favor, though, the squad will be looking to please – they will want a place against Manchester United next week. Also, we were all worried a couple of weeks ago in front of the Bologna game – we managed to do alright there. So ya, I think I have talked myself into being cautiously optimistic about the game.

Allora Ragazzi, ora è il momento di mostrare loro la nostra determinazione; adesso è il momento per la vittoria.

FORZA INTER

OH MY GOD! They are so freakin’ adorable that I could eat them with a spoon.
Maicon and Julio Cesar share a giggle

Well, Dave, there is the one here. The others are all on the main Offside page.

Also, I think it would be different if this had been the winning goal or something. As it ended up, I dont think it had much of a change to the game. I did not seem to change how either Inter of Genoa approached the game, and it did not decide the win.

Wow! Front page news! Who would have thought?

I think you’re right about the goal having no impact on the result. Thats the only reason we’re not being bombarded with wankers

Since there will never be an official Whiner Blog, I have filed Laurie’s article into the “unofficial” Whiner Blog database. Feel free to make additions whenever necessary

I don’t know about the validity of the goal, to me it never seemed to have crossed the line.

The entire ball must cross the line, it looks like there was still a part of the ball that did not cross.

Technicaly it should not be a goal, but you can’t blame the ref for calling it a goal.

Oh and I hope Vidic snaps Balotelli’s legs in to a million pieces, Cristiano Ronaldo hasn’t dived that much in one game.

    This website: http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/lawsofthegame.html
has a pdf file at the bottom. If one were to click on the pdf and scroll to page 31 there is a diagram of what constitutes a goal and the balls position on the line for each call.

It clearly shows, assuming La Gazetta’s picture is accurate, Balotelli’s shot was stopped before it went in. I couldn’t really tell and I saw the thing about 10 times on my dvr.

    However, having said that:
1.) there was no way for the linesman to see the actual position of the ball relative to the line with all the bodies there and his own position

2.) the odds are with him when making this kind of call, a shot is rarely stopped on the line in time

3.) I have seen worse calls. There was an English game earlier this year where the ball went off to the side of the goal – as in a shot that went wide out of play – that was called a goal. They had to get the ball from over that little barricade to restart

4.) the linesman doesn’t have that handy enlargement doodad that La Gazetta has. He should have a little chip in the ball that tells everyone if it went over… but… since they resist technology so much, this is the result

5.) it wasn’t the deciding goal. the game ended 0-2.

6.) It wasn’t even the worst mistake of the day. Someone should tell Mexes that hands are a no-no when in the penalty area. Udinese were robbed, but I am sure that we won’t hear any Roma players call the referee incompetent or on the take and accept their point quietly… “Every time we play Udinese we get favorable calls…” (Remember Totti and his little hissy fit against Rizzoli last year) is not what Roma players will shout out… no matter how true it is…

“OMFG! I can’t believe Inter made Roma drop points against Udinese! Waaaaaa! Waaaaaa!”

    – Roma board after every weak-minded, weak-spined display.

Vincenzo Iaquinta’s header and the goal given to Balotelli in Genoa were identical – neither entirely crossed the line – but Juve did not try to highlight that fact or use it as another example of Inter bias. They accepted them as two very difficult decisions and moved on. I shudder to think what would’ve happened if Roma had a similar incident!

    Nah, I’d rather both disallowed.

I don’t understand though, ignoring for the moment whether it crossed the line or not, how the ref could feel confident enough to make the decision. Did the linesman notify Morganti, or did Morganti call it himself?

    Alessio,

I think the biggest factor was Stankovic’s reaction. If you watch, the ref’s viewpoint seems to be obstructed by the second Genoa player, similarly to how the original camera angle is blocked. It seems that after Stankovic starts celebrating that everyone else accepts what happened was a goal. Good on Deki.

For my part, I think that the whole ball crossed the line. In the picture, there is clearly a little green between the ball and the line. That being said, this is not a call that should have been made. Too close to call. However, all this bickering takes away from Ibra’s cushioned header, similar to the one he laid down for Deki a while back. WHAT A FUCKING HEADER! He’s a genius, and the week off seems to have done him quite a lot of good.

And I just thought that this was funny.

In the Gazetta they were discussing the injuries to the teams in the CL games this mid week, and in the comments section someone wrote, “Burdisso and Materazzi out? Thank you lord…”

I really really hope Samuel and Chivu are back…

So is Balo definitely starting over Adri now against Manure? I think it might be a good idea to start Adri, but bring on Balo if we need a goal around 75 mins, since Adri clearly can’t play for that long. I thought their defense struggled a bit with his physical presence.

Other than tuttosport (and who reads that other than juve fans?) I don’t see a media fuss about the goal/non-goal. Probably because it didn’t change the result. Win by one, win by two, whatever. If, however, that was the only ‘goal’ in the game, there would probably be (and should be) a fuss.

Oh yeah, and I’m a Roma fan who doesn’t like trolls, just thought I would throw that in for the record. Before you start calling names, if I were an Udinese fan I’d be pissed off about the Mexes handball not called.

However, can you get Balotelli to lose that celebration? Ugly. Who was the Inter player who kicked him? twice.
