Goodbye Ibra or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

By: Johonna | July 25th, 2009

iacta alea est – There is nothing left but the ink on paper.

Our newest nerazzurro

The deal is done, Ibra is gone and Eto’o has agreed to Inter’s terms. Samuel Eto’o will sign a five-year contract worth 10.5 million euros a season, probably on Monday, and is expected to start working with the team on Tuesday. With him will come Hleb (whether he likes it or not, apparently) and a giant suitcase full of cash (45 million euros).

I admit it, when I first read that Ibra had left training, I was so mired in self-pity that I could hardly type. In fact, the shadow of doom had been falling on me for a few days. I knew that when I went to the Chelsea-Inter game, it would be the last time I would see Zlatan in an Inter jersey. But I am beginning to realize that I, that we, can get over this. We have had our hearts broken before. There was Ronaldo then Vieri – and if we can get over them, we can get through this. Hell, at least Ibra had the decency to leave the country; Bobo couldn’t even do that for us.

Now, I am not saying that it will be easy. Ibra meant a great deal to many of us, but the cold, hard truth is: he is just not that into us. We knew that last summer, but, like idiots, we thought we could change him… that he would see what a good, no great, thing he had going and would change his roaming ways. Well, as anyone who has ever tried to change a person can tell you, it didn’t work. All that is left is to pick ourselves up and go find someone better. Yep, you heard me, Better. Oh, and younger, too. Then to win like we have never won before. That will show him!

Just get back to work

And just in case this wasn’t quite enough to drive you out of your mind. Maicon is pulling the old “we’ll have to wait and see” thing too. Of course, he is “happy to remain at Inter,” but he doesn’t sound all that excited. Like me, he is also worried about the overall competitiveness of the team, saying:

“Eto’o is a great player and we will do well. If other new faces arrive to build a strong squad, then we will be happy.”

So basically, we could be in for all this horror and heartbreak yet again. I hate this time of year.

And then there is Mourinho. He seems to have gone completely off his rocker. He has not had a single press conference since Milan. He has lost twice – IN A ROW – and no heads have rolled. And he is looking a little… well… disheveled.

Crazy man Mourinho
“Ha Ha… What, me worry? (mumble dogface mumble banana patch)”

Is that the face of a “happy” coach? I dont think so. He looks as though he may be on the edge of hysteria. I think he is one bad signing away from a total melt-down. Either that, or he has decided that there is really no point so he might as well let his hair grow. Mourinho has to get Inter farther along in the Champions League or he will be branded a failure. And he has to do it with whatever Moratti gives him. I think that Real Madrid job is looking pretty cushy just about now. We so have to win this next game or I think he will start walking around with a shopping cart and muttering under his breath.

THE GAME

That’s right, this is a football team we are talking about – a football team that plays actual games!

What: AC Milan v Inter Milan
Where: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts
When: Sunday, July 26, 5pm eastern, 2pm pacific
How to Watch: Live on ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD, or find a stream (MyP2P, Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).

On Saturday, starting at 5pm eastern, Inter will have an open training session at the stadium. For those of you lucky enough to be attending, please take pictures. For those of you, like me, who are not, there is always you tube:

As for line-ups, well, I think we will probably see a little Lucio, some Julio Cesar, and a smattering of Maicon. Samuel and Deki are back training with the team so are probably available. Up front, we will have to rely on Milito and Balotelli. And then there is always Suazo and Destro. Whomever Mou chooses, I hope this time he is playing to win. I think the last couple games have been tinkering (plus maybe a display of Inter’s inadequacies directed back towards Milan). Hopefully, Mou will pull it together long enough to at least appear to care. We really need a win right about now.

After this game, Inter will return to Milan, and, on July 30th will take on Monaco for the Pirelli-Sky Trophy. What do you bet Eto’o makes his Inter debut in this game. After that, there will be a couple more days of training in Italy, then, on August 3rd, it is off to Beijing for the Italian Super Cup (against Lazio, August 8). Everyone think happy thoughts that we will have a trequartista by then.

Allora, per favore, abbiamo bisogno di una vittoria di Domenica e Milito deve segnare un gol.

FORZA INTER

Are we not men? we are INTER. Are we not men? We are I – N – T – E – R
Is that Devo? Nope, it is Mou and his training staff!

It was a great game yesterday. I had front row seats for a rusty Maicon but on the plus I got to see LOTS of Lucio. I am sooooo excited to have him in the team. He’s very quick to the ball and played with an urgency I didn’t see from many of the players. A good sign of a serious professional.

Also, had perfect seats for the second goal. Right behind Milito. I actually got on the jumbo-tron with my “Eto’o + Cassano = Champions League” sign right after the goal.

I wasn’t in a big hurry to get into that traffic so I tried to get some autographs. Julio Cesar came out 5 min after I got there. But no one else in the next 45 min. I saw Moratti and Oralli (sp?) giving separate interviews to Inter TV and Javier waved at us. Besides that, pretty uneventful. Did get some good pics. Lots of Santon & Javier.

    Welcome Jonesy.

I agree w/ sammy that Cassano should be our man.

IMO, we haven’t seen an Inter player with passing skills to match Cassano since Veron left (sorry Figo).

But he might not take sitting on the bench well. And that could lead to a snowballing problem. I have faith that Mou could keep him on the right path.

I really enjoyed the game yesterday – the crowd was fantastic – although I saw too many more red-and-black shirts than I would’ve liked to. Still, we were in good voice, and more importantly, our team was dominant.

It was so amazing to see all these guys in person, especially Zanetti – after watching him for a good dozen years on TV. He was given the biggest ovation when he came off – even the Milanisti around me were cheering him as he made his way off.

I wouldn’t read into this game and find too many positives, since we were one unfit team taking on an even more unfit team. But the few things about the game I did like:

1)I thought our midfield did pretty well in the first half. I was too excited to note carefully, but it seemed to me like apart from Cambiasso, the other three players in the diamond kept switching positions. Occasionally Deki would be the trequartista, occasionally Motta, occasionally even Muntari. It confused the hell out of Milan, for sure. Its a nice concept – but maybe it won’t be possible with Hleb in the system.

    2) Milito was really impressive, the guy has a whole arsenal of tricks up his sleeve. He shoots decently with both feet, has impeccable positioning, nutmegs for fun (oh yes he did! I saw him do 3 nutmegs!), and is a very unselfish player too. As we saw today, he can make the most out of minimal chances. I wonder how he hasn’t made it big for so many years!

    3) Lucio was INTENSE! And I think that for most games, I would prefer him pairing up with Chivu like we saw today. Mostly because both are excellent ball-players, and can hold up that high defensive line that Mourinho wants better than any other CB we have, including Samuel. Personally, I think Samuel is a slightly better defender overall than Chivu, but Chivu has far better skill and is more versatile.

I have a buttload of pics with me, and I’m still sorting through the lot.

BTW, people driving back west after the game – the rain on the route was ridiculous, wasn’t it? Felt like someone above was emptying a lake on us or something!

damn you garrone, that asshole wont even accept a bid for cassano from us regardless of how much we offer to him in cash and players. So from here our options arent good. If we want di maria we would have to pay benfica 30 million which is bull considering how he hasnt even proven himself in the big games in europe yet. Trying to get salvio wouldnt do us much good either considering how athletico madrid are about to seal the deal for him. We already know that sneijder isnt leaving and vdv simply wont do at all he would be like deco only ten times worse. The only player that seems to be available is fabregas and he would cost us A LOT of money like more then 40 million. I really hope we do get just one other player who can at least play in the trequartista role well. We still dont know if hleb will work out. Cassano would have been great but now it seems as though we wont get him thanx to that asshole garrone. Oh well if anyone else knows some players that we might be interested in please write it down in the comment box.

First, I think it would be fun to have an Inter Offside Flikr account or something similar. That way, people could share pictures much more easily.

What do you all think? Would anyone but me use it?

Mickey, remember, Moratti said on more than one occasion that Ibra would stay at Inter (LIAR!).

It could all just be part of the bargaining tactic.

The people over at the Barca board seem pretty unimpressed with Hleb. They say:
    - He cannot adapt to new systems
    - He stays on the ball far too long
    - He breaks easily
    - But he still might be good for us so that Barca will take him back next year.

well sadly i dont think hes enough. Were running out of time and now that cassano is off the market i doubt moratti will be willing to waste any more time trying to buy players. He always said that he wanted to sell players and mourinho being the simon cowell like person that he is has flat out told rivas and obinna to get out of his team. Now for Rivas I have no remorse because he was a waste of a signing but poor victor i feel bad for cuz hes actually a good player but he just hasnt had enough experience with playing at the top level perhaps we could loan him to one of the promoted teams. Apparently hes wanted by aston villa and everton. He might be a better fit for the premier league with his pace and his speed then he would be for the serie a so who knows. Vieira may or may not go to tottenham but he still has to leave either way. Now the Mancini situation is in a big pickle right now because apparently mancini would rather stay at inter but never be used rather then join another club. We might as well send rivas to timbaktu for all I care. As for kerlon well im curious about the lad however it would be difficult for him to even make the bench so i say we loan him out to foreign team like a french team who like their brazilians so that he can gain some good experience. Perhaps a team like PSG or Lyon might want him

see you guys i have to go on some stupid kyaking trip with my family for two weeks in the san juan islands and none of us will be bringing computers. And since my phone is crap i wont be able to check up on the team and on the blog so i will see you all again on the 11th of August. Hopefully by then rivas, obinna, vieira, and mancini are all gone and perhaps another player too. Ive got my fingers crossed for Cassano.

oh yeah and i will miss the supercoppa it sucks too cuz i will only have missed it by three days since i get back 3 days after the 8th on the 11th of August. Im confident that we will do well against lazio but we still should be careful. Lazio always start their season well and then even out as things go on. Good thing that lazio have never really given us too much trouble lets hope things stay that way in Beijing. See you all in two weeks time.

As a Milan fan, this is hard for me to say, but you guys got yourselves the deal of the season. I agree with what mourinho said, that eto’o is worth as much as ibra and you guys got yourselves a 100 million deal.

If you add a creative midfielder in the mix, and considering you guys just banked 45 million, you guys have a team that can provide a legit challenge in the CL. And actually shed that choker reputation considering your new star player is all about showing up at the big games where as your ex star player usually went missing.

Besides, the guy is prick. “To play for Barcelona is a big honour. There are many big clubs but only one special club, and for me it is Barca.” Isn’t this the same douche who 3 years ago said that Inter were the club he grew up supporting. Good riddance, if you ask me.

Hey, somehow your headline reminds me of this:
    http://barcelona.theoffside.com/barcelona/dr-strangelove-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-guardiola.html

Is it just coincidence or did you sort of copy it from Barcelona blog?

I think both, me(Barca) and you(Inter) can be happy with this deal. And I truely wish that Hleb can succeed at your club so that you want to buy him for 10m € next year :)

Furthermore, I feel your Inter will be stronger than before, because the new signings will allow and the lack of Ibra will force Mourinho to play more offensive. There is no way that Inter doesn’t win Seria A next year, I’ve seen AC Milan play against you and they have really disappointed me, the only danger might be from Juve, but still I think that Seria A will be easy going for you :)
Barca will have it much tougher, not because we lost skill, but because we have those crazy Madridistas in our league…

Good luck to you, and let’s meet in the CL final!

Johonna, probably one of the biggest problems we Barca fans had with Hleb was that he didn’t even try to adapt to the system. Post-season he revealed that he hadn’t even bothered to take classes to learn the language, which is obviously needed to communicate with the team. And his attitude was disgusting. I’ll be seriously offended as a Barca fan if he actually tries to learn Italian. But then, maybe you guys might just sign him up for good. Fingers crossed. Hopefully we can sneak Gudjohnson on the plane with him too…

And trust me, I’m sure you’re devastated at losing Ibra, but Eto’o never fails to deliver. He always pops up at the right time, and he works like an absolute dog. People say he doesn’t win matches on his own, but without his hard work and consistant goal-to-game ratio each season, Barca would’ve had a much tougher time in the years he’s been with us. You’ve lost a champion, but snagged yourself another one.

Oh, and not all of us cules buy the argument that Ibra won all he could at Inter. You guys can still win the champions league, I think he just wanted a fresh challenge.

Great blog by the way, and good luck next season. With Samu in the colours, I’ll be rooting for you guys all season long.

You know, I think that the 1964 movie Dr. Strangelove stole it from the 2009 blog about Barcalona, too!

It’s now official: Barcelona started everything, we are all living in Barca’s world!

By winning the Champions League, every Barca supporter is now the unapologetic expert of everything, EVER!

It was neither intended to be an offense nor arrogance, this headline reminded me of the news (yes, and also of the movie, my father is one of the biggest Stanley Kubrick’s fans on earth) and I just wanted to know if Johonna got the idea of using this title from the Barca blog. Which would mean that he/she visits it sometimes, which is absolutely possible, I’m also checking some other blogs from theoffside. As long as you are an open-minded person, there’s no problem with it.

But maybe you were just living up to your name. Cheers!
