Inter 0 – 0 Man United – It So Could Have Been Worse

By: Johonna | February 25th, 2009

Julio Cesar shuts down Rooney

Ok, so we didn’t win… But then, we didn’t lose either. Plus, thanks in large part to the wonderful man above (Julio Cesar), we did not concede one of those terrible terrible away goals. Really, I think Ibra summed up the whole game pretty well:

“We have a one hundred percent chance of qualifying. We go to Manchester with two results out of three in our favour. We didn’t manage to take the lead but we stopped them from scoring, and this certainly isn’t a disadvantage. It was a wonderful match tonight. The first half was theirs but the second was ours. Manchester are a great team but so are we. We matched them blow for blow tonight, now we will go to Manchester to win.”

He may be overstating Inter’s game a little, but that is to be expected. I think you will all agree that is so could have been worse.

I would put a video here, but UEFA does not want anyone to enjoy 3 minutes of a game unless they pay for it first. Besides, there is really not all that much that I want to see again.

First, there was the first half. It was horrible. Inter looked nervous and gave up way too many free kicks. Plus… well, plus everything. If there was a “what not to do” for football, it would show that first 45 minutes with big red arrows over half the Inter squad. And what the hell Rivas was doing out there is anyone’s guess. And Muntari.… Just what was he thinking? [I can feel my blood pressure rise just thinking about it]

Cordoba beats Park to the ball

Cordoba came on for Rivas in the second half and things went a lot better. Still not good, but better. If only Adriano…. well…. was actually there yesterday. We had some shots – none of them on target though. I would be more upset, but as I said, I am not going to get emotionally involved with this competition.

Cambiasso clears the ball

Cambiasso played a good game, and, with some loveliness by Zanetti, they were able to stop Rivas making too big a fool of himself. There was a bit of a fracus from the bench when Toldo and Figo came out to protest against the referee not calling a nasty foul on Muntari – he got a crunching kick to the googlies, and while I probably should say something about O’Shea getting all ball, it really looked painful so I wont joke. In any event, the ref saw nothing wrong with the crotch-tackle so on play went and Toldo got a card. [on a side note, Toldo has done something with his hair and is looking good!]

Towards the end, Mourinho went for a much more attacking formation, taking off Adriano and Muntari in favor of Balotelli and Cruz. Balotelli at least tried. Cruz was almost nonexistent. We really need a striker (or two) this summer.

Santon\'s first Champions League game
Il Bambino Santon takes on Mr. Tricky Feet Ronaldo

On the upside, we have met the monster and it wasn’t nearly as frightening as we thought it would be. Sure, Cristiano Ronaldo has tricky feet and takes a wicked free kick, but we have an 18-year-old left back (isn’t he just cute as a bug?). They have Wayne Rooney, but we have Julio Cesar (see above). They have Berbatov, but we have a 36-year old right back come midfielder (with thighs of steel!). Now, if we could just get our strikers to actually shoot on target, we may have a shot. Granted, that is a big IF.

Zanetti keeps Berbatov at bay
Zanetti The Wonder Man shuts down Dimitar “off sides” Berbatov

There is no use crying over the spilled milk of failing to score. In a couple of weeks we will know whether we will go through or not. All I can say is: at least we did not lose. No matter what Juventus and Roma supporters say, I think it is better not to lose, even if you are the away team. Of course, winning would have been better.

This weekend we have Roma while Milan is going to Sampdoria (meh) and Juventus entertain a sagging Napoli. In their current forms, I dont see either team taking points from Milan or Juve. It will be up to Inter to keep the pace – these are three points we cannot afford to throw away. While I am ambivalent about the Champions League, I want the Scudetto this season. I want it badly. So, instead of wondering what might have been, lets concentrate on the task at hand: putting those wolves down for the fourth time (and I thought only cats had 9 lives!).

Ok? Ok! Onward and upward, Ragazzi.

I was desperate to change the subject. Everything else was about CL. At this point, even TF rumors are more interesting.

Yeah, seeing everyone but Udinese drop out of the Uefa cup just makes this week super-depressing.

Doping allegations (which were true, the doctor took the fall) led to phone taps which led to all the fun we are having now. And we have nothing to fear from transparent account books now.

We are now linked (read as: made up) to everyone including Goran Pandev, who it should be noted was in our youth system and played sporadically for us before we used 1/2 of him to help get Deki from Lazio.

We are not only going to buy him back, but we are prepared (yeah right!) to outbid Juventus for his service. My opinion, let Juve have him, if they want him. We have done fine without him.

The greatest European great team greatest of the millennium etc is out of the UEFA cup. Woopdeedoo.

To be honest, I was hoping they would do better than this so that 1. they would not be able to focus only on the league 2. it would reflect better on italian football

alessio: take your grievances somewhere else. Don’t care about Platini or any of his goons. And no, he didn’t save Mourinho. There was nothing wrong with what Mou said after the tie – at least nothing that could get him in trouble. Madrid and ManU officials get away with a lot worse nearly weekly.

Ah, Milan, the flagbearers of Italy in Europe (blah, blah, blah) – now out of the soon to be Europa Cup too. It’s sad, but please don’t come here to vent your frustration. We’re doing just fine. I don’t think we are happy about all your (Juve, Roma, Milan) losses, but we just don’t care. As simple as that.

Mighty mighty milan are out of the UEFA cup ? Impossible there must have been some sort of mistakes on UEFA parts and tomorrow they ‘re gonna release a statement reading ” we are sorry for the misunderstanding we’ve caused Ac milan are not out of the cup because 1st they’re too good for that and 2nd they’re named isn’t inter and are kings of europe ”

    Bwaaaaaaah

Anyways I wish cruz will retire as well he is not only too old but he also has became useless his 15 minutes against man utd were just sad

Didnt Cruz score 16 or 17 times last season? Didnt Crespo do the same two years ago? Wtf happened? We’ve gone from having 4-5 world class strikers to 1. Why did we get rid of Sauzo? Is he worse than Crespo or Cruz?

Im sick of Crespo, Cruz, Adriano, and Balotelli. I wouldnt care if we sold them all

I think Cruz had 19 goals in all competitions last season according to Inter.it. Crespo had 20 the year before that.

I think that we are asking our forwards to do more than just point and shoot… and those two are just not that kind of forward… neither, I think is Suazo.

I still think we should keep Balo for now. And despite what my brain tells me, I have new faith in Adri (it was completely gone a few months ago). Though if losing those two meant getting Tevez, I’d be satisfied.

My faith in Adri is shaken after the last two games, particularly against Man U. I pray to God he remembers how to finish within two weeks.

We may ask the strikers to do more than score but thats no excuse to play like shit. We really shouldnt have to get another striker but we do. The guys we have just arent reliable.

I like Tevez and Aguero. We all know Tevez’s contract situation and maybe there’s some truth to the rumours that Aguero fell out with his manager. Hopefully one of them will sign for us.

And an attacking midfielder wouldnt hurt

Adri actually did a really good job of controlling the ball from goal kicks and other long balls. Which helped Inter control possession as much as they did. (They actually ended up with 51% of the possession at the end.)

His dribbling is getting better. More confident.

He just needs to work on controlling his shot and keeping his hands away from his headers.

Without a doubt, Cruz stepped up last season when Ibra was injured and was a large part of Scudetto 16. He has only scored a couple for us this season, but they have been important (Udinese, anyone?). It is just that recently he has completely lost his marbles. He seems to spend most of the time sitting on the ground looking at a ref (very Pipo-esque). Maybe it is just that he knows that Mou does not like him so his confidence is low. The funny thing is, Mou would LOVE Cruz if he was scoring goals. Catch-22

Adri is puzzling. He has flashes of the kid we all knew and loved. The question is, are flashes enough? Also, he needs to work up to match fitness. He should be able to play a full 90 at his age!

Im just tired of Adri scuffing the ball. And heading it off his arm. No one is doubting his talent. He wins aerial battles, he holds the ball up, he can turn and dribble etc… Thats great but how about putting away a first time strike from 6 yards out? Or making clean contact with a free header? Is that too much to ask?

I wish i could watch a couple training sessions to see how the strikers are doing. its hard to tell anything from cruz or balotelli’s 10 minutes in the game, they dont even have a chance to get warm then the game iss already over. I agree that Adriano needs to improve on his fitness and finishing. his movement and possession is ok but i think if he’s really fit he wouldn’t be so clumsy on the ball when he gets a chance to shoot, he just needs that little extra concentration you only can have at that point when you’re fully fit. i miss his old shot, he used to crack the ball from wherever he wanted it seemed and it was so dangerous. and my god if he only had a right foot….

What Adri and Cruz have been doing is basically down to lack of confidence. They’re both still very good strikers but finishing will come with more practice and self-belief. As with Crespo and Cruz we have seen forms change, so bringing in Tevez or Aguerro may not be the solution (although I’d love to have one of them in the Inter squad next season, but what I’m saying is that their forms may dip too, especially after transferring to a new league).

The other thing about Adri – and that’s something which may never change – is his total dependence on the left foot (appropriately pointed out by Alessandro above), to the point that every marker knows he’s ALWAYS going to turn left and NEVER right. That severely limits his danger in the business third.

After failing to shake Fergusons’s hand at the end of the game, Special Mou said:“My dug-out is a special dug-out. I have a special door in the dug-out that means I can leave it directly”

Does anyone have pictoral or video evidence of this door? I think it doesn’t exist and Jose used his magical powers to vanish into thin air, like he did with Quaresma.

confidence is so important. look what cruz did under mancini who loved him. at this point i can only see adriano starting again with ibra but we’ll see how it goes these next two weeks before old trafford. id love to see balotelli get hot before that game, but i dont think he has the power(physically and mentally) to face vidic and ferdinand. whether adriano can shoot or not, he still draws a couple defenders with him wherever he goes and he’s been battling well up there when long balls are sent to him. god forbid that game ends 0-0 and we have to go to PK’s. i’ll definitely have a heart attack. but id rather shoot a PK against dud van der sar than saint JC thats for sure
