Inter 1-0 Udinese and Other Drama
By: Johonna | November 13th, 2008
I go away for a few days and all hell breaks loose. First, we FINALLY beat Udinese at the San Siro. Samuel makes his long awaited, triumphant return. Cruz saves our bacon yet again to cement his position as Inter’s official super-sub… but for how long? Apparently everyone and their brother wants him (plus Obinna and Crespo) come January. And Mourinho is still having his issues with the Italian Press. Oh, and the never-ending soap opera that is Adriano goes back on the boil. So, let’s start at the beginning with our glorious, long awaited victory against Udinese.
Highlights after the jump.
Once again, Inter battled until the last whistle, squeezing three points from a game where other teams may only have come away with one. It is clear that both teams were a bit tired, we both had midweek games, after all. I will admit to a bit of floundering in the midfield and some indecisiveness at the front. Oh, and Cordoba’s yellow probably should have been a straight red. It was a bad, dangerous tackle. The only saving grace is that it looked sort of unintentional and he was immediately apologetic. With this card, Cordoba, along with Maicon and Quaresma, is one booking away from a ban.
On the positive side, we did not concede. Yippee! Udinese had been on an offensive roll with 19 goals in 10 games. This season, only Juve and now Inter have held them at zero. Keeping a clean sheet makes me very happy. As does the return of Walter Samuel. After having been away so long (almost a year), he returned to the pitch in fine form and played a full 90 minutes. In the end, we did manage to score – Grazie Cruz – Il Jardinero came through for Inter one more time.
And so Inter pick up 3 more points and head to the top of the table. But is this good enough for the Italian press? No! After the game those meanies at Sky Sport Italia just would not leave poor Mourinho alone! He wants to talk about now and all they want to do is rehash the past. It is bound to make a person grumpy. Here he is, at the top of the league (for the time being), and still, the press dont think he is good enough. Constantly being compared to your successful predecessor is tough (you can almost hear him say “Mancio, Mancio, Mancio” in his best Jan Brady voice). In the end, he gets a little cranky and decides to just walk out of the interview (and I dont blame him):
Of course, this leads to all sorts of rumors about Mourinho leaving Inter before this contract is over. Apparently Manchester City are going to offer him 15 million pounds to take over next season. Mourinho, for his part, had only this to say:
“Everybody knows I love English football, but everybody also knows I am Inter Milan coach.”
Whatever that means. The whole kerfuffle also supposedly has angered Moratti who would prefer a bit more tranquility with the press and in the dressing room. Sigh. Why is it never easy with Inter? If it is not one thing, it is another. Whatever happened to all those group hugs from the beginning of the season?
And then, of course, there are the continuing dramas of Julio Cruz and Adriano.
Rumors are mounting about a possible transfer for Cruz in January. He is nearing the end of his contract and Inter may look to sell his contract while he can still command some money. Apparently Barcelona are interested as are Roma (who also want Crespo and Obinna). That is, of course, unless he goes back to Bologna to work under Sinisa Mihajlovic.
Yikes.
As for Adriano, it seems he and Mou have made up and he was all set to play against Palermo on Saturday, but then he called in sick with the flu only to come in later in the day. Really, dont the press have anything better to do?
Oh Christ, and then there is poor Ibra who joked that he was tired and needed a rest but now he has to play some stupid freakin’ friendly with Sweden against Amsterdam on the 19th. I hate international friendlies.
So, to sum up, here we are, back again at the top of the table… That is at least until Thursday afternoon and the Juvenuts-Genoa game, so lets enjoy it while we can. There is still the same ol’ drama swirling around Mou, Moratti, the media and Adriano; and half the team is leaving this winter.
Basta, ragazzi, non più dramma, non più voci, solo il calcio e la prossima partita. Almeno per ora …
FORZA INTER
Oh, and nice try Zanetti. Next time it will go in!

And to file away in the “what-were-they-thinking file,” Inter now offer Centenary Commemorative wine.
Yep, to go with the ugly jeans and Inter underwear, you can now buy Inter brand wine!
Wow.

The fact that they aren’t identifying the vineyard leads me to conclude that they are charging about ten euro a bottle for the labels.
According to today’s Gazzetta, Mourinho has recommended that Adriano be loaned to a non-Italian club (with a clause that would prevent him from rejoining Serie A before 2012) and that Crespo, Jiminez and Dacourt find new homes (either in Italy or abroad) during the winter transfer window. Cruz gets to stay.
Assuming that the story is true, I would say that the choices are based as much (if not more) on the players’ attitudes off the field, as compared to their performances on it.

Really. He wants to flat out sell Jiminez. I thought he was looking for a loan opportunity for him.

Keep in mind that he still hasn’t given up on Lampard for next season.
Given that context, loaning Jiminez doesn’t make much sense.

Sell Jiminez to Palermo pleaseeeeeeeeeeee

I would like Jimenez to stay because I think that he could be helpful as a midfielder or as a sub for Quaresma or Mancini in that wide hybrid position.
The rest: Crespo and Dacourt can leave.
Cruz can stay as super sub.

Lampard…. Geesh. He should let that ship sail.

So much drama! Last time I checked we were top of the table and the CL group. I wish the press would get off Mou’s back. He can handle the pressure though, I hope.
Cruz must stay. He should be first choice alongside Ibra but the super sub role seems to work. Adri had the “flu” huh? Riiiiiight. What a joke.
Ibra better sit out Sweden’s friendly. Samuel’s back!!!

Technically, we are still alone at the top because of a better goal differential. Albeit the difference is 1 to our advantage.
BIG match on Saturday!!

The eight “sisters” for this weekend:
Palermo v. Inter– Barring Juventus v Genoa, the toughest game for a “sister”.
Atalanta v. Napoli– I don’t see how Napoli loses this one.
Milan v. Chievo– Erm… Milan should win.
Udinese v. Reggina– Wow, I wouldn’t want to play Udinese this week.
Roma v. Lazio– I wonder how soon Lazio will build a lead big enough to sub off all their good players.
Juventus v. Genoa– What I thought was going to be a good game…
Cagliari v. Fiorentina– Interesting match up. Despite the obvious talent difference in Fiorentina’s favor, these two seem an awful lot alike.
— All of the “eight sisters”, those teams that are in the thick of the race at this point, have games that they *should* get points in. Genoa is the first to screw up. It will be interesting to see if a “sister” fails to get points from a game that one would consider winnable.

I’m not concerned about Juve, Milan or anyone else. Inter will win the league by a comfortable margin and its laughable that our rivals are getting so worked up in November. All the talk is of how bad we’re playing and we’re still top. When we hit form it’ll be 06-07 all over again.
The main objective is the CL. Mou will have Inter peaking at the right time to finally end the drought! Forza Inter!

I know it is sort of galling, but I think that Roma should win the derby. It would be nice to have one less “sister” to deal with. Plus, I sort of pity them now. With this new DDR injury scare, I want to give them all a hug or something… Maybe a nice cup of cocoa or hot tea.
Dave, I am glad you are so optimistic! I am very concerned about Juve. I just hate them – smug little 2-star so-and-sos. Also Milan. I know they should win but that doesn’t mean that they will. Stranger things have happened.

Next week’s match on the 22nd is against Juventus!! I can’t wait for it, but Palermo is first and this is a must win match that cannot be over looked. Here is the squad:
Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 22 Paolo Orlandoni.
Defenders: 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 6 Maxwell, 13 Maicon, 16 Nicolas Burdisso, 25 Walter Samuel, 23 Marco Materazzi, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: 4 Javier Zanetti, 5 Dejan Stankovic, 14 Patrick Vieira, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 20 Sulley Muntari, 36 Francesco Bolzoni, 33 Amantino Mancini.
Strikers: 8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 9 Julio Cruz, 21 Victor Obinna, 45 Mario Balotelli.
Hmm no Quaresma. Is it possible Cruz starts up top with Ibra and Mancini?
Here is my guess at the starters:
Cesar
Maicon Samuel Cordoba Maxwell
Muntari Cambiasso Zanetti
Cruz Ibra ManciniOr maybe the Balotelli starts with Cruz to come on later, but that is like saying we will need a late winner. Let him start, maybe he will grab an early one. He was scoring goals as a starter too the last few seasons, not just as a sub.
Dave, I hope we hit that form! I am expecting it as well.
Johonna, no need to feel bad for them. With their remarks they deserve no sympathy. I hope Lazio crushes them as bad as we did. I am looking forward to that match becuase it really is one of the World’s best derbies.

Isn’t it awesome how the other teams are in “good” form and we’re playing “terrible” and we’re still top of the table?? haha can’t wait til we start scoring left and rightPosted from

Roma shouldn’t win the derby…because Roma is a group of asshats and Lazio can’t keep up this form to challenge for a top 3 spot.

Plus, Roma in the relegation zone…too perfect.
