Inter 1 – 0 Udinese: Blech…

By: Johonna | April 6th, 2009

What will we ever do without him?

Boy howdy, but that was ugly. But hey, we get three points to bring us nine clear, and that makes everything just peachy. Oh, and grazie, Isla, for the goal. Basically, Inter sat back while Udinese tried to show us up. We had a couple of near misses – but really, we were mostly slow and out of sorts. Dont get me wrong, we did not entirely suck, but we were not anywhere near the level we can play (and better play at next week). In the end, we got the result, and, at this stage of the championship, that is all that counts.

Here are the highlights:

GOOD JUNK

Well, first and foremost, Javier Zanetti. Yep, he comes home on Thursday (or was it Friday?), after playing a full 90 in Bolivia on Wednesday (we wont talk about that horror), then plays a great game for Inter – fresh as a daisy. What did he have to say about it?

“I came from a very long trip back but I didn’t feel the tiredness of the match. I think I did well.”

Really, the man is unbelievable.

Chivu back on the pitch against Udinese
The question is, can he play 8 games without an injury?

Chivu made his triumphant return to the pitch and managed to win Sky’s man of the match. Certianly he and Cordoba went a long way to keep Floro Flores and Quagliarella off the score sheet. Now, if he can just stay healthy for a while.

Maicon\'s woe may be Maxwell\'s windfall.
Maxi, back on the pitch… But for how long?

Maxwell found his way back to the first team and he wasn’t terrible. In fact, he had a couple decisive saves and everything. Mou seemed happy with his performance, saying:

“Maxwell had a fantastic match tonight. He played with tranquility, the ball at his foot is always perfect for a player in movement. He had a great game. His future? He has a contract with Inter, he’s 27, he’s a fantastic lad, he’s an example for everyone.”

And then there is Julio Cesar. Without a doubt, Inter would not be nine-points up were it not for his wonderful magnificence. He also played both internationals last week, and although he conceded with Brazil, his sheet is still white as snow with Inter. The fans agree with me, and have given him the highest rating in the squad: over 8.

THE BAD JUNK

Santon, not his best showing
Santon may have been a little stinky but he is still cute as a bug’s ear.

Ok, so Santon did not have his best game. In fact, he had a bit of a stinker. Balotelli also was not at his best. I think even the FSC announcer commented that he looked lazy during the first half. Mou commented on their performance saying:

“I didn’t like Mario’s game and I have already told him. I think he finds it easier playing with three strikers. He improved in the second half and gave a great ball to Stankovic, but he has to do better. I like working with the youngsters because they always need the feedback of a coach.

Santon also found it a harder match today. Perhaps he was tired after playing for the Under-21 national team, but maybe he’s already used to playing on the left because he has played lots of games there and they are two different ways of playing football.”

Thank goodness for small favors
Grazie, Calcio Gods – I will most definitely light a candle tonight.

Vieira saw about 20 minutes. He came onto the pitch and picked up a yellow card on his first touch. Yikes. He got a little better as the game wore on, and was involved in the own-goal – sort of. Well, I suppose it was his run that caused all the havoc and Isla’s mistake. Still, I think he needs to retire.

Oh, and the worst thing: Julio Cesar picked up some sort of muscle strain and asked to be subbed off. No word on the severity, or even the nature of the problem. It didn’t look terrible, but, then I am trying not to think about it. Maicon was a huge blow, but JC, that would be catastrophic. We will not think about that – only happy thoughts. I SAID HAPPY THOUGHTS!

THE REST

So, pretty much everyone else had a pretty average showing. They did their jobs, but the moments of brilliance were far and few between. People seemed to have a problem with Figo, but I though he actually had a few really great passes. Ibra agreed, saying:

“I touched more balls in the last 20 minutes than in the first 70, thanks also to Vieira and Luis Figo who created a lot.”

Vieira and Figo congratulate each other on still being in the game
Figo may be old, but he still has a spark, vision, and tricky tricky feet.

Mostly, the squad seemed to be out of practice. There is a certain momentum to be gained by playing with the same 15 or so people every week. Our sense of positioning seemed to be off, and, for long stretches of time, we could not keep possession to save our lives. Hopefully the kinks will be ironed out ahead of next week’s match against Palermo.

THE PERSISTENT CURSE

Around here, we just call him Adriano.

To recap, Adriano did not come back from Brazil as planned. No one seemed to know where he was – there was even speculation that he could be in some sort of trouble. We were even feeling sorry for him – worried even. But now, well, I am just pissed.

It turns out he is in Rio with his family. He wants to stay to watch the Flamengo-Fluminense derby so will not come back until after Easter. Yep. He just decided, all on his own, that he would take a little vacation. You know, if this were you or I, and not some prima donna football player, I think we would get fired.

The new rumors are that he stayed in Brazil because he is depressed over breaking up with is girlfriend. Are you kidding me?!? What is he, 15 years old? He can’t even call work to say he isn’t coming in? Cripes. I mean, I get it, break-ups are traumatic, especially when you are slightly manic. But that is no excuse not to check in with work. For the millions of euro Inter pays him a season, the very least he could do is answer the phone when work calls.

And then, to say that he is thinking about not renewing his contract with Inter? No. No way. He is not breaking up with us… We are breaking up with him. Right now, right here – in writing! You are all witnesses.

Well, at least he is really going to have to jump through hoops to make this right – huge, flaming hoops of doom. This is way beyond flowers and champagne…

MOVING ON

For those of you that like to speculate about transfers, Mou has offered up a shopping list:

“What do we need to improve our game next year? It doesn’t need a revolution, we must improve in all sectors. A defender, two midfielders, and and a striker with economic balance and of choice.”

Mourinho flirting with the enemy
Hey there Fabio, how would you like to get a new set of stripes?

Then, he got the pundits twittering by with this little gem about Quagliarella:

“I told him that a dive was enough to get sent off and he told me he didn’t dive, but he’s a good lad and he’s in our dressing room now. I’d like him to stay with our shirt, I like him a lot (smiles)… Cordoba and Chivu did a great job on him.”

So there you go – speculate away!

To wrap up, we are 9 points up, but it isn’t over yet. We still need 16 points to put this scudetto away – and we only have 8 games to do it. Basically, we have to win 5 more games. I say we start next week with Palermo.

FORZA INTER

No fun picture today – just the link for the Italian Red Cross (if you dont read Italian, here are instructions in English. If you are in the US, choose “Stati Uniti” under Nazione)

I like rossi too but if I had to choose between him and kun aguero I’d go with the latter im a big la liga fan so I watch those 2 guys week in and week out and I believe that kun is a level above rossi they both would be great buys though

    G. Rossi > Crespo
    Bobby Freshwater > Cruz
    Tevez/Quag’s > Adri
Guti (from R. Madrid) > Figo
    Palombo > Vieira
    Santacroce > Rivas (on loan)

We would gain youth. Lose some weight on contracts. And bring in a bunch of Italians.

TEVEZ???? Really? I dont want Tevez.

Also, SS, Mou wants to pair down the squad. There will be some players whose contracts will not be renewed and will not be replaced in the squad.

    Dont forget the list:
1 striker (I think this is in addition to Acquafresca)
    2 midfielders
    1 defender

Tevez and Rossi cost a mint separately, let alone together. The story is that someone offered @20 million euros for Rossi and it was turned down *last year*. I also think he has a 30 or 40 mil transfer fee built into his contract. Tevez has a 30 mil fee built into his contract that a third party owns and ManUre has already paid 10 mil down on. I doubt that we will go near either of these guys considering the wrangling we had to do to get RQ and that was only 20 mil.

50-60 odd millions would just be the transfer fee, their wage will also have to be considered.

Let’s not get too crazy here. We are going to be mostly selling this summer. We will probably be signing some midfielders – I personally think at least one will come from Udinese, that just makes too much sense. We already have one forward coming in the shape of Acquafresca. We might get another. A defender might be coming in as well. We will also be “graduating” some youth players.

All this will be done *plus* getting the squad down to around 24. That most likely means we will be looking mostly to sell/loan/buyout, before we buy anyone.

I think with the Adriano meltdown, we need one more big (as in physically large) striker. I see that as our big summer purchase.

Also, we desperately need a creative midfielder and another defensive one.

In case anyone isn’t paying attention, it’s all about the blowouts today. Barca is killing Bayern (4-0) and Chelski is killing Liverfool (1-3) in about the 70′.

Okay, so who is our big, strong target man, ’cause all the names that are thrown out there are medium/small guys – Rossi, Aguero, Acquafresca. The only one that’s large is Drogba and frankly, I’d rather not trade one freak-o for another… although, at this level they are all a little freaky – and not in the good Rick James way.

Hamsik is a name that has popped up this week, but I can’t really see Napoli selling him. They have too many ambitions to be a real selling club. Udinese sells everybody and if Torino goes down, that could be the last straw for Rosina who could play at our level. Lazio is in the same bind that Napoli is in. They want Europe, and you don’t go to Europe by selling your captain (Ledesma). Gallopa from Siena, which is another rumor that I have heard, would be jumping quite a bit in team ability. Can he handle it?

Or do we have someone on the youth team ready to come up as has been hinted, like Khrin or Napoli or Destro? This is going to be quite the silly season… doubly so as this Greater than the Great Depression will make every move count twice as much since the money is that much harder to come by…

acquafresca is only about 2 inches smaller than both adriano and drogba, so i don’t think that should be much of a concern. i dont think a big guy is really all that necessary. of tevez/aguero/rossi, i think i would rather rossi. he would probably be cheaper than the others and he would help inter with the possibly upcoming 6+5 rule.

also, balotelli is the same height as both drogba and adriano. he is just leaner. he will bulk up as he ages, so i really don’t see it as a concern.

Ok, so scratch the big guy. We still need someone like Ibra so that he does not have to play every single game.

Here are our forwards right now:
    Ibrahimovic (keep)
    Cruz (go)
    Adriano (go)
    Crespo (go)
    Obinna (?)
    Balotelli (keep)
    Acqufresca (keep)

So, that means we have 3, possibly 4, forwards. That seems like plenty, but I think I would rather have someone a little more tested and reliable than Obinna.

Tevez will be way too expensive. Aguero doesn’t want to leave his current club. I want someone who wants to play for us, not someone we have to drag in.

Acquafresca looks like he’s about 40 lbs smaller than Droba and maybe 60 lbs smaller than Adriano. That’s a lot of (mostly, hehe) muscle to give up. But he has scored goals from the air so what do I know.

You gotta think that Obinna is gone. I just can’t imagine how they are going to go into next season with 3 players under 21 years old. There’s gonna have to be another player brought in.

I can’t see Villa coming. He’ll be *incredibly* expensive and I don’t think he wants to move out of Spain. Rossi and Tevez are too expensive, Aguero doesn’t look like he wants to move, god please don’t make it Drogba… If it’s not Milito, then I’m stumped.

“I dont think that ManU drawing 2-2 with Porto says anything about Inter or the way the team plays. Each match is its own thing. There are so many variables that I dont think you can compare like that.”

This is a fair point. I like to think the effort they put in beating Inter left them a shrivelled husk.

Mancio has upset with his two and a half scudetti comments. On Massimo Moratti, “His fault? – said smiling – When you win, even playing bad, always calls. When you lose does not speak with anyone. And maybe change coaches too easily.

“Non mi è piaciuto quello che ha fatto dopo lo staff del presidente con quei comunicati che si riferivano a cose successe una settimana prima dell’ultima partita”(le intercettazioni col sarto di Appiano, ndr.).

Do you think he’s had some work done? Looks a bit Silvio.

Well, Mancio did sort of break my heart with that whole resignation thing. I mean, I wish him all the best and all, but, man, way to kick a fan when they’re down. Besides, how can you dislike someone with such nice hair?

And yes, I think he has had some eye work done. He has to fit in with the resort crowd now, after all.

Hmmm, the Hungarians are after Inter:

Court hears Hungarian club’s cash claim against Inter Milan

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Hungarian football club MTK Budapest is asking sport’s highest court for compensation from Inter Milan for a teenage player it trained who later signed for the Italian champions.

Attacking midfielder Attila Filkor signed a four-year contract with Inter in 2006, one week after leaving his hometown club in Budapest to join a team in Malta.

Filkor, now 20 and a full international for Hungary, stayed with Pieta Hotspurs for only a few days before signing with Inter, which reportedly had earlier been in difficult negotiations with MTK.

The Hungarian club took its case for compensation to FIFA before filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The CAS panel of lawyers heard the case Wednesday and is expected to give a ruling within several weeks.

Filkor is currently on loan with Serie B club Sassuolo after playing last season for another Italian second-tier team, Grosseto.

He is expected to play for Hungary at the under-20 World Cup in Egypt in September.

I have absolutely no recollection of this kid. I hope he doesn’t end up costing us too much.

Rosina could definitely be the missing spark in our offense. we lack a #10 that creates the play bringing the ball up into the attacking third to our strikers. right now there’s a big gap there and all we do is hope ibra can keep the ball and make something happen. Rosina is young and italian, but would he cost a lot? i bet he’d be happy to leave a soon to be serie B team to come to inter

Speaking of bringing new players in…

I just ran a quick look down Inter’s youth teams standings in the tables: http://giovanili.inter.it/cgi-bin/home?L=en

The teams are in the “teams” drop down menu at the top and the tables are located in the “matches” drop down menu at the top.

I went down 6 levels of youth teams. Inter was either in first place (4 times) or in 2nd (2 times).

For those who don’t know, the Primavera squad is the next youngest squad from the senior team. Not only are they in first out of 14 teams, but their leading scorer is a kid named Napoli who has 15 goals out of 23 games so far. Second is a kid named Destro with 10.

Why am I mentioning this? Well, I am not really sure, other than I think that these guys will come up and be loaned out (or play for us?) next season and I wanted to mention it in case anyone wanted to keep track.

But I also couldn’t help but notice that their last game is May 2nd… the weekend we play Lazio. We need at least sixteen points, in any order (Mo thinks that 15 will do it), from now until the end of the season to ensure that we win the Scudetto. Lazio is 4 games from now. It is possible to have 16 points between now and then. If we have those points and the Primavera season is over (I don’t know about tournaments or anything…) I think we will see some of those guys. Just a heads up as the silly season seems to have started early… I am guilty of it too…

Okay, I can’t do math today. It would be impossible for us to get 16 points until Siena – 6 games from now assuming nothing changes between now and then.

I still hope that I see some of those guys for the last one or two games this season to see how they play…
