Inter 1 – 1 Torino and Arrivederci Quaresma

By: Johonna | February 3rd, 2009

Poor Ibra - no goals for him
Holy cow but that was frustrating.

It is all giggles and laughs when Juve loose at home and Roma draw to a bottom-three team, but it is just no fun at all when it happens to you. Dont get me wrong, I will take the 6 points we are up but I just cant help but wish it were 9. How often does a team get a chance to gain points on Juve or Milan? I just can’t help but think we may rue this missed opportunity. Still, a point is a point, and suppose it could have been worse… but cripes, this is TORINO we are talking about. On top of that, we have the Champions League list and the departure of Dacourt and Quaresma to deal with. First things first…

Highlights if you want them (HD on youtube):

Ok, so I must admit, after watching this game, I was pissed. Angry. Stamping and shouting. Then I read what the players said, and now I just want to give them all a hug. They are just as or more disappointed than I am. Especially Julio Cesar, who blamed himself for the dropped points saying:

“I very angry about the goal I let in because it was one of those that I usually save. It was very strange, I didn’t see Bianchi because he was covered, so I looked to the back post but as I turned the ball was already going over my head. I didn’t have the reflexes or the strength to divert it round for a corner. It was an important match today, a great chance to reach the maximum advantage over Juventus ahead of Milan’s match. These are the matches in which a goalkeeper should be decisive. We should have taken advantage but we only earned one point.”

Poor guy. How many times as JC kept us in the match? C’mon, admit it, dont you just want to give him a hug?
JC misses the ball

Ok, now for the good. I think Figo played well. He may not be as athletic as Stankovic, but his crosses are good and he has good vision. Inter had more possession and over twice as many corners (15 to 6). Sereni had an outstanding game (why to these keepers always pick Inter to have these amazing games?). Inter had far more shots than Toro (23 shots, 6 on goal as compared to their 12 shots, 3 on), as you can see on this keen graphic from ESPN:
Shot map from ESPN
INTER is in Yellow, TORINO is in Blue; filled in circles are goals.

As it shows, Inter was a little unlucky not to get a second (then there is the whole matter of the handball in the box that was not called – but I wont go there).

And who would have ever thought Nico Burdisso would be our savior?

Crespo - not to badAs for the bad… Well, there was Cruz. I will say it: Cruz is too old to start – especially 2 games in a week. He is still a good striker with great instincts in front of goal and a killer header, but he just does not have the legs or stamina for a full 90. Adriano and Balotelli better get their acts together because we desperately need a second striker. Crespo… Well, I despair for him. At least he appears to growing his hair out again. Maybe that will help.

I suppose I will just have to look at the bright side like Mourinho, who looks at the game as a point won instead of two dropped. But it could have been NINE! (deep breaths… letting it go… at one with the cosmos….)

Oh well.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Mourinho has submitted his list and once again, no Crespo. Here is who will attempt to stop the terror machine that is Manchester United – in front of sell-out crowds no less:

‘A’ LIST

Keepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni

Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, Rivas, Samuel, Chivu, Mei, Santon

Midfielders: Stankovic, Figo, Jimenez, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Bolzoni

Forwards: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Adriano

‘B’ LIST

38 Luca Caldirola (defender)
41 Mattia Destro (striker)
42 Joel Chukwuma Obi (midfielder)
43 Luca Stocchi (goalkeeper)
44 Luca Tremolada (midfielder)
45 Mario Barwuah Balotelli (striker)
46 Rene Krhin (midfielder)
51 Vid Belec (goalkeeper)

Basically, the A list is everyone but Obinna and Crespo. Balotelli is on the B list. Both lists are equally eligible to play, so no big deal there. I do wonder that Vieira is on the list. Out of something like 30 games, Vieira has only made 12 appearances this year. If he can stay healthy, he can help (that was a nice goal against Reggina after all), but that is a huge IF in Vieira’s case. He should be back to Milan this week so I guess we will go from there.

CIAO CIAO

It looks like Dacourt and Quaresma have packed their bags for England. Quaresma is off to the lofty heights of Chelsea while Dacourt finds himself at Fulham. I guess Bologna never did call back.

I am very disappointed that Quaresma did not work out. I had high hopes for the boy – which may have been part of his undoing. Still, he may work out his kinks with Scolari and come back to us a changed player. More likely, though, he will turn into a superstar with Chelsea who will exercise their option to buy at the end of the year and he will be yet another one that got away. I wish him all the best. I am sorry it didn’t work out. I hope we can still be friends.
——————

Lecce is up next. We have a whole week to train. The transfer window is closed so there should be no distractions. Fingers crossed that most everyone is healed up. Maybe even Balotelli can play a bit.

FORZA INTER

What a pity it didn’t work out. I so wanted you to be great for us. ♥
If only it had gone in.

In England the manager has more control, whether its Ferguson or anyone else. In Spain and Italy the presidents, sporting directors, and board members have more of a presence. Its not just Inter that works this way.

I dont understand how you would know if RQ was training well or who made the decision to loan him out. My guess is that Mourinho, Branca, Oriali, and Moratti worked together to make that decision. Obviously, its Moratti’s $$$ and he has the final say.

“I dont understand how you would know if RQ was training well”

    Spyplanes.

Not really. Mourinho saying RQ was training well that week would be the clue. So he decided to play him.
It’s the rapidity that surprises me, did they have a mind on it before the game or was it a snap judgement. And of course RQ would have to agree, maybe it was his request after the game, get me out of here!

Can I borrow that spyplane? ;)

I didnt mean you personally but how would anyone outside the club know whats really happening at training or who makes the decisions. Mou has said he’s been training well for a month but he still didnt play. I think he was trying to give him some confidence for one last shot to impress.

Your guess is as good as anyone’s as far as who initiated the move and when. In any case I dont expect him to ever play for Inter again

Quaresma’s performance against Torino was so hopeless, and in particular the fan reaction against him so virulent, that it wasn’t surprising at all for anyone here to read the next morning that he was being offered an escape hatch.

Quaresma never won over the Meazza faithful (his stubborn insistence on using the trivela every single time being a large part of the problem), and Sunday afternoon was in many ways the last straw, with virtually all of the pent-up frustration from a very frustrating match (from a nerazzuro perspective) being focused on him. I genuinely would have feared for his safety had he chosen to visit an Interisti hangout that evening; he definitely wouldn’t have emerged from the tram we took back from the game without a beating.

Given that Mourniho has been interested in reducing the squad for months, that Quaresma has always been one of the easiest to move of those “on the bubble”, and that he has always been a “confidence” player whose confidence has clearly been destroyed by the negative reaction of both fans and press here, it made perfect sense to all of the relevant parties (primarily Moratti, Mourinho and Quaresma) for him to go out on loan.

My only surprise was that he went to Chelsea, as Scolari was perhaps the only man in Portugal who did not rate Quaresma highly at the time of the 2006 World Cup (leaving him to play for the U-21s at a time when everyone in the country was demanding that he be in the starting XI for the senior team).

Tim Hughes, you are in for a tough task. I was at the Derby earlier this season in September and I was in the same boat you are in now. I was lucky to have one of my cousins finally purchase the tickets for me at an authorized selling point right beside her place of work. It was very last minute. If you know someone in Italy, you could perhaps have them try to purchase the tickets for you. They do not necessarily have to be in Milano to buy the tickets.

If that is not an option for you and you are willing to pay the asking price, then I’d suggest a 3rd party ticket site.

    http://www.sportsevents365.com/event/index.php?q=eq,45179&tic=price&tickets

Before I was able to secure tickets in September, I was dealing with above website via e-mail and phone. I woul dhave purchased my tickets there but, as stated my cousin was able to purchase them for me. They were great to deal with.

It’s very likely that the two clubs will enter this Derby positioned 1 v 2 in the table. Its going to be a tough ticket to get your hands on.

That being said, if you have never been to this derby, I highly recommend doing whatever it takes to make sure you are in attendance. Good luck, hopefully you are able to get your hands on a pair of tickets!

Brian, the tickets ended up being 80 Euro each. It was Milan’s home game so they set the prices.

Pretty decent seats, just on the wrong end of the stadium. I was just behind the corner flag in the southwest end. I didn’t have an option to be picky on where the seats were. I would have sat anywhere. There were a lot of Interisti in the area though.

I can’t wait to go back. Aiming for the First Derby of the 09-10 Season.

The last time I was in Milan (Inter vs Udinese) the desk clerk out our hotel assured us she knew people “she could call” for tickets for any game. Though it was imphasized it was pricey. If you have deep pockets, ask at your hotel.

Just read an interview with Branca and he said we’re gonna sign two “top quality” players in the summer. I garuntee it’ll be a striker and a creative mid. Hopefully Tevez and Hamsik

The brass say that every season. I suspect their argument would go something like “if they weren’t top quality, Inter would not sign them,” ergo whomever Inter sign are “top quality.”

It is nuts… We just closed one transfer period and the press are already talking about the next one.

While I have not really formed an opinion about Inler (which is the rumor I read), I do agree that we need a Vieira replacement.

The dream signing for Inter fans seems to be Essien, not a chance in hell. Drogba more than possible.

Can’t remember who but someone mentioned Joe Cole and Tevez. The idea of Jose signing Cole is comical, their relationship was fraught to put it mildly. Jose scouted Tevez in Brazil with the lovely Kia Joorabchian when he was at Chelsea and presumably passed him up.

I really wish everyone would stop linking Inter with every player at Chelsea. I would hate for anyone of their players to move to Inter.

Maybe Lampard or Deco would have been ok if it were a few years ago.

21 call ups for tomorrow’s match.

    1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 22 Paolo Orlandoni;

    2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 6 Maxwell, 13 Maicon, 16 Nicolas Burdisso, 23 Marco Materazzi, 24 Nelson Rivas, 26 Cristian Chivu, 39 Davide Santon;

    4 Javier Zanetti, 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Luis Figo, 11 Luis Jimenez, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 20 Sulley Muntari, 33 Amantino Mancini;

8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 18 Hernan Crespo, 45 Mario Balotelli.

Despite more rumors of an another altercation between Mourinho and Balotelli in training this week, he has been called into the squad to face Lecce. No Gurantee he’ll see time though.

Kirby, when is that fixture. That would be a good one to catch if I can.

The whole transfer thing is ridiculous. It’s kind of okay during the summer because there aren’t any games. When there is a season in progress… I kinda would rather talk about/watch games, not business wrapped in the sports pages.

Interesting comment from Mou on Balotelli:

“Objectively there are three ways a player can work with me: not do what I want him to do, do something because I ask him to do it, or do it without me asking him to.

“Mario is at the second stage right now, he’s doing what I want because I ask him to do it. It will be perfect if he can get to stage three, he will be the player you all say he can be. But at this moment I’m happy he’s past the first stage.”

One step at a time I guess. I hope he plays because we need his free kicks
