Inter 2-1 Bologna, Crisis Averted
By: Johonna | October 6th, 2008
This isn’t going to be much of a review. I didn’t take notes this time and it has been a couple days. I do have some general impressions, though, and there is some other news to keep us busy.
Just to remind us:
First: We won! Hurray! This was a must-win for Inter. If we had dropped points against a decidedly bottom-half team, there would be no end to the “Inter in Crisis” talk (see Juve, Milan, and Roma if you don’t believe me). Happily, though, we took full points, and, after 6 game days, are in third place with 13 points. We would be higher in the standings were not for our inability to actually put balls into the net. Which leads me to my next impression.
Second: Ibra scored an amazing goal Saturday night. Whether it is luck or skill or a mixture of the two (as I tend to believe), it was still a joy to watch. Also, he had some great drives, including one where he powered past the back line and took on Bologna’s keeper only to completely miss the open net (I wonder if he is mumbling to himself in Swedish as he walks away). This made me scream just about as much as the goal did. It is this sort of impossible inconsistency that makes me want to shake Zlatan until his teeth rattle.
Third: Once again, Vieiri made me believe. If he can make it through a couple months with no injuries, I think I may just grow to like the guy. Hell, if he makes it to the end of the season without tearing something, I just may buy a jersey with his name on it! As the stats show (see below), he had a pretty great game. He was a defensive beast and he even had a pretty good run at the goal. Now, how do we make sure that this is the guy that shows up against Roma and not his evil twin that played against Lecce?
Fourth: Adriano finally got his name up on the league score sheet. What made this even more special, is that Ibra gave the penalty to Adriano to take. Adriano said:
“Ibrahimovic was set to take it, but I asked because it was very special for me to score at San Siro. He understood and let me step up. It’s great when your teammates help out.”
This is a whole new side of Zlatan, and I think I like it. Maybe it is Mourinho, maybe it is age, but whatever it is, perhaps the old mercenary “me-first” Ibra is gone for good.

Lastly: It is official, the Inter back line is cursed. During the game, Nelson Rivas ruptured the external collateral ligament of his right knee. He will undergo surgery and, no matter what the press says, I bet he will be out at least 3 months. Add to this Chivu, Samuel, Maxwell, and Materazzi, and one begins to wonder what has gone wrong. Poor Rivas. I hope your recovery goes well and you are back on your feet soon.
Here are the stats from the game courtesy of the Lega Nazionale Professionisti:

And here is Il Corriere dello Sport’s pagelle for the players:

In recap: we won. We played well, we made many chances in front of goal, and we had the greater possession. I hope that soon that will translate to more goals because we cannot count on a handball in the box every game. Also, we need to find some solution to our defensive woes. Either people are going to heal or we need to hit the mercato hard this winter. No more mistakes in front of our own goal (I love our captain, but yikes, what a howler). And more than anything, we need to improve our set pieces. We had far more corners than Bologna (11 to 5), but I do not remember a single one that actually resulted in the keeper having to work. I miss the pre-Nedved Figo. We need a dead-ball specialist! There are just too many missed opportunities with this team. We are better than the scorelines show. Ok, I will get off my soapbox now.
Later we tackle international players and who is going where.
And who knew Cruz hocked shoes?

He does personal appearances for Lotto and was at the shop near our flat a few months ago.
He’s a nice guy and who knows, maybe he’ll get to Jakarta someday.
Balotelli is Inter’s best corner-taker by quite a large margin right now. Quaresma is much more effective crossing on the run (usually with a trivela) than with corners.

So I was over on the main page, and I had another window open on top of that one, and all I saw was “Bologna Crisis Averted.”
I read it with my mind in American mode and thought, “Whew. THAT sets my mind at ease. I was worried about that Bologna crisis.”
Never mind.
Back to my cave now.

Has the boredom of an international break arrived already? I am perusing my morning unsubstantiated rumor mill, otherwise known as Italian sports journalism, and all I see all over the place:
Inter for Palumbo
Inter for Aguero
Inter for AquilaniJimenez to Samp
Crespo to Samp
Crespo to Roma
Balotelli to Real MadridMan, I just want to enjoy the actual football, I think that I have had enough of Sport Business 101 this past summer. Besides, it’s only early October, the next transfer window is over 2 months away. How much hype (read: lies) do we need?

You forgot “Sensi to be Forced to Sell Roma” and “Ibra and C. Ronaldo in Balon d’Or Death Match”.
But seriously, if you were an Italian football hack, you’d be trying to come up with some story that would keep you in Rome or Milan rather than spending four days in Sofia, wouldn’t you?

I missed the Death March one, probably because Cristiano was mentioned and I skimmed right over it.
I get it and normally I’m amused by the chaos of often complete random speculation.
I just wish that with actual games under the belt, they would spend the time on something other than “Inter linked with 50 players that they will never, ever get, nor need for winter window”

Since it’s coming up….
CASILLAS for Ballon d’Or. Partially borne out of my hatred for CR7, I see him as the only legit contender.

Rivas has had his surgery and it was successful. He will be flat on his back for 2 weeks before starting rehab. I will be surprised if he takes the pitch again before February.
Poor kid.

Judging from the recent activity here, most of you are as bored as I am with the international break.
As long as we have the time, could someone clue me in to why De Rossi’s red card was a 1 game ban and Muntari had a 3 game suspension?

De Rossi’s was two yellows (one for dissent), Muntari’s was “violent conduct.” (I believe)

Exactly.
The standard suspension for a straight red for violent conduct is 3 matches, that for two yellows is 1 match. A straight red for dissent (like the one that Materazzi got from the bench in the Derby, carries a 1 match ban).
In all cases, the length of the suspension can be modified by the Giudice Sportivo, but the above is the baseline from which the process starts.
Obsessives (like me) who want to keep up with the exact details of the latest decisions can do so at this link

And ale, Marca has been pushing the Casillas for Balon d’Or bandwagon since Madrid won the Liga, and has been in overdrive since they won the Euros. My guess is that their campaign will be as effective as the half dozen that they ran in favour of Raul.
Yesterday’s Gazzetta had Kaka supporting Messi, and I think that Iniesta deserves serious consideration; it’s better than baseless transfer speculation.

Ursus, good. I don’t think CR7 deserves it, both professionally and because I just cannot stand him. Casillas does. I think rising up to big occasions is a very important factor of the Ballon d’Or as well as the team leadership, and in both cases CR7 fails.
Side note, Gazzetta published a rating of team’s mercatos. Interesting to see how they judged Inter’s. (And yes, I agree it’s way too early to make an evaluation)
Inter: voto 7.
Promossi: Adriano, Mancini e Muntari.
Bocciati: Quaresma.
Senza voto: Obinna.Posted from

Sigh. Quaresma was supposed to be better. Of course, while not a revelation, he is nice to have as an option. Also, I think it may take a few months to settle in to Italian football. Who know, this time next year we all may be quite impressed.
Muntari, though, I like him lots and lots.

Quaresma promises so much when he’s on the field, you get a sense that playing with the same cast for three months as opposed to one, he will be very useful. He just turned 25. He’ll be fine.
Btw I thought that the De Rossi red was for tackle from behind. I didn’t even see that he had a yellow.
Anyone else get the feeling like Sully is likely to stay for the long haul? I think that he really likes it here. Plus, his enthusiasm reminds me a lot of Javier ten years ago. I don’t think that Sully has Javier’s class, but he plays all out.
We needed a Thumper on this team.

Ale, add me to the list of people who can’t stand C. Ronaldo. I hate Real Madrid more than any other football club in the world, but if it is between him and Iker, I’ll wrap myself in the Spanish flag and sing Hala Madrid at the top of my lungs. And yeah, it’s ridiculous to judge mercati after six matches. My Portuguese friends all say that Quaresma will take time to settle, especially as he needs to develop an understanding with his teammates over how and when be should use his trademark “trivela”. I am quite confident that La Gazzetta will be singing a different tune in six months.
MAD, De Rossi’s first yellow was for dissent (and not picked up by the RAI cameras). And I couldn’t agree with you more about Muntari. Within the first 15 minutes of the Catania match it was clear that this was a guy who just belongs here (at least as long as Mou stays).
And yes, it is sacrilege to compare anyone with Javier Zanetti, but from an attitude perspective that is exactly the comparison that occurred to me.
