INTER in Group B

By: Johonna | August 28th, 2008

Group B
Inter (Milan, Italy)
Werder Bremen (Bremen, Germany)
Panathinaikos (or PAO; Athens, Greece)
Anorthosis Famagusta (Larnaca, Cyprus)

Inter may have been a bit lucky in our draw: lucky not to have to face Chelsea like Roma, or Real Madrid like Juve, but that is not to say we do not have our work cut out for us.
.
.
José had this to say about the draw:

Looking at the teams we have to face, it’s impossible to say whether it will be an easy group stage or not for us. Our first goal is to qualify, our second goal is to finish first in the group. We are of course very motivated and we are confident in our strength. We are eager to start this UEFA Champions League campaign but on Saturday we have our first game in Serie A against [UC] Sampdoria and we must only think about that for now.

So Mark Your Calender:
Upcoming Champions League Schedule for Group B

Tuesday, Sept 16: Panathinaikos – FC Internazionale
Wednesday, Oct 1: FC Internazionale – Werder Bremen
Wednesday, Oct 22: FC Internazionale – Anarthosis Famagosta
Tuesday, Nov 4: Anarthosis Famagosta – FC Internazionale
Wednesday, Nov 26: FC Internazionale – Panathinaikos
Tuesday, Dec 9: Werder Bremen – FC Internazionale

How does this fit into our league fixtures?

Sunday, Sept 14 we play Catania at home.
Sunday, Sept 28 we play Milan away (which is really also at home)
Sunday, Oct 19 we play Roma away
Sunday, Nov 2 we play Reggina away
Sunday, Nov 23 we play Juventus at home
Sunday, Dec 7 we play Lazio away

If we consider Werder Bremen to be our top competition in the group (which may not, in fact, be the case), then our only real worry is the Oct. 1 game. It is only three days after a derby that will definitely take our all to win. For the rest, I will leave it up to you to decide.

Oh, and in case you did not see, The Offside World Cup board has a new Forum page. There is an Inter Forum where I have started a thread on the upcoming Samp game.

Hope to see you there!

Ciao Ragazzi. Forse domani ci sarà Quaresma!

There is a lot of Inter news today!

First of all tomorrow the season begins!

U21 callups include Balotelli, who has been an Italian citizen for all of 2 or 3 weeks, Bolzoni, who is still listed as a senior team players, and Aquafresca.

Does anyone else get excited when they think of Balotelli, Adriano, Ibracadabra, Aquafresca, Mancini, and Quaresma as our choices for our front line next season? :)

Also Mourinho is being coy about his callups for the Samp game. Inter.it includes this list, but Mo’ has said that there will be a “surprise” on the team for the Samp. game.

Well, La Gazzetta seems pretty sure that Quaresma is finally done.

Also, a bit of good news for Suazo and Chino: Suazo to Benfica and Chino to Munich:

Okay, I just wanted to put this out there and see if anyone had any thoughts.
    Here is our September Schedule:

    1 Sat, Aug 30 2008 20:30 Sampdoria – Inter -
    2 Sun, Sep 14 2008 15:00 Inter – Catania -
Tue, Sep 16 2008 20:45 CET Panathinaikos FC – Inter
    3 Sun, Sep 21 2008 15:00 Torino – Inter -
    4 Wed, Sep 24 2008 20:30 Inter – Lecce -

Doesn’t look especially terrible to me.

Torino and Samp are decent sides, and they are both away. I expect at least a draw with both. But it would not shock me if we were able to get wins from both games.

I have to be honest, I am not really scared of Catania, Lecce or Panathinaikos.

I can’t remember if this was already touched on, but it looks like part of the Obinna deal, according to Gazetta, means that he could come back to Inter in the Winter Transfer if needed:

BUUUUUT dont forget that on Sept 10th our Brazilians will be called up for international duty. Factoring in travel time and what not that may mean no JC or Maicon for Sep 14.

Dont discount the Greeks. Remember what happened 4 years ago at Euros.

To be perfectly honest MAD, there should be no one to fear ;) I definitely expect wins vs Torino, Catania and Lecce. I am not saying they wont be tough games and I am sure we will draw at least one of those, but there aren’t many reasons to think we cannot win all 3.

The Samp match is a one in which 3 different outocmes are very possible. I think we should be able to beat Panathinaikos.

Lets be realistic here. 4 wins 1 Draw 0 Losses is likely or 3 Wins 2 Draws 0 Losses. Worst case scenario would be 3 wins 1 Draw 1 Loss. I can’t see us doing worse than that.

Don’t forget the better we do over this stretch the more benificial. The Champions League is a muct win. Right on the heels of this stretch we have:

@ Milan Sept 28th – Always exhausting. Physically and meantally.
    Werder Bremen – Oct 1st
    Bologna October 5th

At least all 3 of those games are at the Meazza.

After that ist a 2 week break followd by 4 games in 10 days to close out the month. @ Roma, Genoa, Anorthosis, @ Fiorentina.

Pretty good first 2 months of Calcio!

You know Johonna, I can’t wait for tomorrow to arrive. If we have to temporarily say goodbye to players like JC and Maicon for the game against Catania… we’ll have to slog on without them.

Paolo, I could live with just about any of those senarios coming to pass.

On the Quaresma topic, I saw that the bigwigs from Porto are in town to talk about…something… I don’t want to know until it actually happens because I am sick of the speculation.

BTW is FSC broadcast going to be live or tape delay?

See, Alessio, thats what I get for reading the Italian press. Monaco = Munich in Italian (I was caught once already on this). In the same Gazzetta article, they used Montecarlo as Monaco so it is very very confusing.

    My box says live too.

And I have no problem with Cassano or Samp. We will beat them, of course (goes without saying), but I dont dislike them in any way. I wish them well in the UEFA cup.

heheheheh Yeah, I know it’s on FSC, the question was is the broadcast live or not, as I would really like to watch it live.

Thanks to those who actually read the question and answered it. I appreciate it.

Am I in the right blog? I thought this was the Inter blog.

Johonna, I would be happy with a draw or win. Samp at home was pretty good last year.

Well, Andrea, I thought I was posting on the Inter board, where Inter tifosi can all discuss Inter news and speculation on Inter’s season peacefully, with cookies and with good natured camaraderie.

    But, I wasn’t there. I was on:

I think that Alessio has little faith in Materazzi.

He may be right, but I think that I read that Cordoba made the trip too. He might be plan 1b if MAterazzi can’t do it.
