Inter – Palermo: Heading Into the Final Stretch
By: Johonna | April 10th, 2009
What: Inter v Palermo, Day 31
Where: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, San Siro, Milan
When: Saturday, April 11, 3pm local time (9am eastern, 6 am pacific)
How to Watch: FSC is bumping most of the Siere A games for the EPL on Saturday, so they are showing this game Sunday morning (9am eastern, 6am pacific). If you want to watch it live, find a stream (MyP2P, Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).
Saturday starts the beginning of the end of this Championship. It is the first of 8 final games in which Inter need to pick up 16 points. Basically, that means we have to win at least 5 of these last 8. We could probably do it with 4, but 5 is much better. Palermo is one of those teams where you never really know who will show up. Will it be the team that beat Roma, AC Milan and Juventus? Or the one that went down 4 to 0 against Catania? Either way, we have to beat them. Luckily, statistics and history are on our side for this tie. Of the 21 times that Palermo have come to Milan to play Inter in the Serie A, Inter have won 15 and drawn 6. Palermo have never won this tie. But, as we all know, there is a first time for everything and you can never take points for granted (just ask Juve!).
Last year, we started strong with a goal from Vieira (remember those?), but then Materazzi had a bit of a bumble and the evened things up for Palermo. Luckily, Jimi scored a beauty (remember those?) to put us back on top. Here are the highlights (sorry about the quality, it was the best I could to):
THEM
Finally, I dont have to write this! Steven does a bang-up job over at the Palermo board and I am sure he will have a preview from the pink point of view. If you want to know about formations and players and whatnot, I suggest heading over there.
Offensively, Miccoli, Cavani, and Simplicio have 29 goals between them. Any one of those guys could put a serious hurt on us. If one is having a bad day, any of the other two could step up and rain on our parade. Especially as they are chasing Europe. Palermo is only four points shy of 6th place and that coveted Europa Cup spot. Still, it is possible that the whole squad will have a bad day: Palermo are almost just as likely to lose as they are to win (14 wins, 13 losses).

My name is Marco Amelia. I like long walks on the beach, playing myself on FIFA 09, and candle light dinners.
Defensively, Marco Amelia is no slouch. I have seen him make some pivotal saves. In fact, if you look at his saves to goals conceded for the season, only about 28% of shots on target get past him. As keepers go, that is pretty good (for comparison, JC = 16%, Frey = 23%, Doni = 31%, Abbiati = 20%).
So, if Palermo is on, they will most certainly keep Toldo on his toes. Also, it may be devilishly hard to score on them, especially in the first 15 minutes after the break (from ESPN):

US
Mourinho has called up 21 players:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Orlandoni, Belec.
Defenders: Cordoba, Maxwell, Burdisso, Materazzi, Samuel, Chivu, Santon.
Midfielders: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari.
Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Crespo, Obinna, Balotelli.
This is going to be tough. No Maicon, no Julio Cesar. At least our central defenders are all back. Mou has hinted that Cordoba and Chivu will start in central defense, although I think we will see Samuel at some point. He would have come on against Udinese had it not been for JC’s injury.
For the rest, Mou said:
“I have already said the league continues and we are missing 15 points to win the championship. To answer your question, I say that tomorrow I will field the best team possible, therefore with Ibrahimovic and Zanetti, obviously. More explanation of the formation? There is no need: you have already seen by now that we have a structure that does not change that much, I will not make a big revolution tomorrow. We know which players are injured, but again we have among us the central defenders.”
Ok, so how about this:
Toldo
Santon – Cordoba – Chivu/Samuel – Maxwell/Chivu
Zanetti – Cambiasso – Muntari/Vieira
Stankovic
Balotelli/Figo- Ibrahimovic
I know, there are many of you with your doubts about Figo and Vieira, but fact is, we played better against Udinese in those last 20 minutes with them on the pitch than we did for the first 70 without them. I dont think that either should start, but both are perfectly good substitute material. I think that one of the things that has made Inter so successful this season is that the squad is very fluid. Although we may almost always start with the same formation (4-3-1-2), the players have the mental and physical ability to shift gears and change mid match which allows us to better react to a challenging team’s tactics. Of course, it also means that predicting a line-up is tricky. You just never know what Mou will throw out there.
The most important thing is not to get ahead of ourselves. The team must be confident without being overly confident – if we give Palermo an inch they will certainly take all three points.
On a more serious note, today is a national day of mourning in Italy for those killed in the earthquake. There are thousands of people that have had everything destroyed, thousands injured, thousands that will spend the Easter holiday without family and friends.
As Mourinho said today:
“We are all together in these moments. There’s no rivalry or negative relationships. Unfortunately this disaster has occurred and now it’s important to be close to the families of the victims, and share their sadness and pain. Life continues for us like it does for these families, but the memory of this moment with remain with everybody. It’s important that this solidarity goes a lot further and doesn’t last for two days or two weeks, because these people really need help to rebuild their lives.”
I am in complete agreement, so here, one more time, is the link to donate money to the Italian Red Cross. Every little bit helps.
I am sorry this post is so skimpy (at least it feels skimpy), but work and whatnot is totally cutting into my free time (dang it!). I hope I have not forgotten anything. If I have, I am sure one of you kind, knowledgeable readers will post it in the comments!
Allora Ragazzi, anche se non possiamo essere allo stadio di persona, siamo con loro nei nostri cuori. Tutti insieme per la vittoria!
FORZA INTER
Oh, and to remind us all just what Toldo is capable of:

hmmm, i must have been sick the day they changed the rule. I was completely unaware. Thanks for clarifying!
ah well, i still don’t buy it when a juventino says he doesn’t care about finishing behind milan. i think it’s a massive down play. They would all care if milan were to finish ahead of them, every single one of them… those who say they don’t are probably roma fans deep down inside
Excellent points MAD. Hit the nail on the head on all of them.

So, I just watched the Rome derby. Do you think Totti will be fined for all that shoving just before Mexes got sent off? I mean, if video evidence can get Adriano suspended for all that time, why not Totti?

“The only Inter fan Ive met thus far in Italy at a bar was Romanian. Shocking.”
lmao. Whatever makes you feel better alessio

I was going to let that slide, Dave. I mean, every city Inter visits for away games has Inter clubs. Inter do receptions where a couple squad members go sign autographs and what not. They appear to be rather well attended.
But whatever. Besides, I dont care how popular Inter is – why would that matter?
On a completely different note: I think it is interesting that Zlatan swears in english when he misses a shot. I can clearly lip-read F*cking Hell.

I just thought that comment was funny. Im glad he can take solace in the number of Inter supporters he comes across in bars.
Ive noticed Ibra’s English skills also. In that Circus Zlatan video he said he tries to speak that language as much as possible. In the CL he always berates the officials in English

from a rosanero fan i just want to tell you not to be too disheartened by last week’s result. as johanna said, we are a jekkyl and hyde team. you are the only member of the big four not to lose to us at somepoint this yr, yet we lost both sicilian debries by a total of 6 goals and have losses to torino and chievo on our resume.
anyway, glad to see your happiness following the juve-genoa result. as happy as i was to see that frown on mou’s face at the san siro on saturday, i’d pull for y’all any day over those cheaters from turin. best of luck from here on out, and buona pasqua

Grazie tante, ndcolin.
I am not upset that Palermo played well – I always expect the opposing team to play well – only that Inter did not play up to the level I think they should. Zlatan and Mario missed a couple of sitters; that is what really hurt. Oh, and the fact that Toldo’s positioning was so terrible for that first goal. JC would have stopped it – no doubt.
Frankly, I think teams underestimate Palermo (like Inter did) and give them too much space. I think it is all part of the northern superiority complex that permeates Italy. I am all for Palermo doing well – I actually am quite fond of the team – but just not at the expense of my team.
At least we didn’t loose. Ten points, while not 12, is still nothing to sneeze at. With Juve’s loss, all Inter need now is 12 points. I cannot tell you how much I want to beat them next week. I am trying not to think about it, though, so I dont make myself too nervous.

All this talk about Juve finishing 2nd vs. 3rd got me thinking: they can actually finish 4th and have to qualify for CL. Besides playing us next Satuday, they have to travel to the San Siro to play AC, and also host Lazio as their last game of the season. Genoa (currently 6 points behind Juve, in 4th) don’t play any top 8 team for the rest of the season. And if you believe their form based on how they destroyed Juve yesterday, I think they’re more likely to win the 3rd automatic CL spot. Who’s with me?

And yes, MAD, we should catch another Inter game soon. I don’t know if the Distillery has FSC. In that case, we can watch the Juve-Inter game next Saturday afternoon.

Anyone else catch The Offside front page and the bad egg thingy? I thought, the ditz who does these things usually avoids Serie A like the plague and always puts up unknown french players. What’s the deal with this weeks lame-o “quiz”.
Then I caught the pattern – Inter players, Cassano and Paulson – quick, which team fanatic, who is short on brains, wit and imagination would include all these players (as “bad eggs”) and ignore Totti, the biggest asshole in all of Serie A for around a decade?
The answer, of course, for anyone who missed the Derby Liveblog this past weekend, and the last few years of Serie A/Italian National team action on this website is “I’ve So Lost Touch With Reality” Toothless Chris.
If you doubt his lost touch with reality please read the Roma Blog and then try to figure out how you let in 4 goals and yet “dominate” a game. Let alone the Capital Derby which, frankly, Roma should be happy that it was only 4, cause the game I watched? Rocchi and Pandev both missed a couple beautiful opportunities that they normally would score.
Boy that Mexes is a world class defender, isn’t he? Yikes!
skyder, I am going to miss the Juve game, but I’ll call the distillery and figure out if they have FSC.

Yeah, I have to work next Saturday.
I took on the extra responsibility because of the little bundle of joy, that not a lot of people are being asked to work more… they are mostly being let go nowadays, and that most of our games would be either early sat., early sun., or late sun. All of which I would be able to see live.
I missed a couple of games like Siena and one or two other minor games, but I think this will be the first “big” game that I will miss all season. I think all told I missed 4 games this season and 1 of them was a CL group game, which was no great loss to me.
I think we can win a fairly called game, but I think we can do business with a draw, as well. After Saturday’s brain fart, I hope that we bounce back with a good performance. This is Juve, so we have to be prepared for some “shady business” from the match officials. I don’t think that Secco will take 3rd place as cavalierly as the Juventus Offside…

APPIANO GENTILE – Approximately five hundred fans flocked to the Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti for Monday morning’s training session for the Nerazzurri’s preparation for Sunday night’s league against Juventus.
Two different groups: in the first with the players most employed in the match aganist Palermo, after stretching, active recover and one-touch training games in small field. For the second group warm up, possession drill and training match.
Individual workout on field for Julio Cesar: aerobic and technical exercises between the post.
For Luis Jimenez and Amantino Mancini session in parallel with coordinating exercises with and without ball, strengthening in gym and abdominals. Francesco Bolzoni and Maicon, therapy, phisiotherapy and ‘manual’ reinforcement.

Yes, I saw that. I was trying to figure out what ” ‘manual’ reinforcement” meant. I have to say, it sounds a bit kinky.

What would automatic reinforcement be then ?

Yowza!
Ooookay, then…
I don’t know how many people read the Italian press, so if I am repeating stuff that is already known, let me know and I’ll stop, but the papers yesterday were kind of interesting.
According to the Corriere, which isn’t exactly reliable, the derby match was, contrary to Toothless Chris who is rarely reliable in the extreme and the rest of the Roma crew who are frequently crazy let alone not reliable, dominated by Lazio. I happen to agree, as I thought Roma was lucky to leave at only 4-2.
More interesting is the rumors of unrest in the roster department. Several players will have to be sold if Champions League/high wages isn’t available and the names the they are kicking around will cause howls of dismay from the Roma side of things. Strangely the coach is considered rather safe, which I don’t get. Usually the coaches in Serie A are exchanged in a giant carousel. By the way, Roma could keep everyone, meet wages and maybe bring in one player, if Totti retired. I’m just saying…
In contrast to Spalletti’s predicament, Tuttosport, which runs a close race with The Toothless One as far as reliablity goes, is always pro Juve, even unto craziness, but, if the stories in there are anywhere close to the truth, Ranieri better run for the hills. Fast. If Juve don’t win the Scudetto, Coppa Italia or sink to 3rd place I think Ranieri is history… which is good news for some of the lower level teams in Serie A. Ranieri has a place in the league, but not in the top 5. Although, Tuttosport is hoping/spreading rumors that the club will pick up the coach of Genoa… so Ranieri may not travel too far, if he goes. I still think he could do better work at Udinese, or Bologna, or Torino, or another team in the lower half.
I remain shocked that Spalletti isn’t gone from Roma yet… Any other team would kick his ass out the door if he brought a 2nd place team a year ago to 6th… and that 6th is precarious as well.

Someone watches South Park.
Ok then, MAD, what do you think ” ‘manual’ reinforcement” means?
As for transfers, I dont think anyone is “safe” until the window closes and the season starts.

I think that “manual reinforcement” means massage therapy, but that’s just boring ‘ol me…

Ok, I’m going to sidestep Jo’s fascination with “manual reinforcement” to spread the good news that JC is going to feature in the Italian Derby. I like Toldo as any other Interista, but Julio Cesar has been in a class of his own this season. It would be a good “head-to-head” against Buffon too.
In other news, Figo is rumored to join JM’s coaching staff this summer. Hopefully they’ll be able to recruit some “good” Portuguese wingers to the team.

oooooooooooooooooooh. Massage therapy.
See, I was thinking of this whole scenario where Bonzoni and Maicon were very naughty for getting injured and both required spankings.

Id like to give YOU a good spaking Johonna!!!

And changing the subject (trying desperately to put the lid on the can of worms)….
Skyder, good Portuguese wingers, you say? As opposed to Quaresma?
Posted from

Spankings?
No, you must be thinking of castle Anthrax, not Inter, at which naughty Zoot has been lighting grail shaped beacons…
Spankings would be punishment (which has been proven not to be efficient… socially). Not reinforcement – positive or negative – at all.
And besides, the spankings that I think you are thinking of require a character called “The Gimp” to make an appearance from a locked crate.
Sorry, too many movies from too many different genres seen today…
