Inter Scrape Past Genoa in Coppa Italia

By: Johonna | January 14th, 2009

Crespo - almost back
Yep, Inter managed to pull through in extra time for a 3-1 win over Genoa at the San Siro today (or last night depending where you are). It was a grind. No matter how hard Inter knocked, Genoa keeper Alessio Scarpi would not let a ball through. On the up side, Maradona was in the stands to scout for the Argentina National Team so all our Argies were on their best behavior. Even Crespo and Burdisso. Adriano managed to pull himself out of his funk with a nice header, while Cambiasso got his first of the season. Ibra rounded out the scoring with a audacious nutmeg through Scarpi’s feet. Genoa played a hell of a game, and Marco Rossi’s equalizer was simply beautiful. Still, when you are playing with 10 men, by the time 100 minutes rolls around, I bet you just plain get tired.

The line-up was not exactly what I expected, with Chivu finding himself in a central midfield role and Crepo Crespo (whoops) up front with Adriano:

Toldo
Maicon Burdisso Samuel Maxwell
Zanetti Chivu Muntari
Jimenez
Crespo Adriano

At the half, Obinna came on for Muntari, then towards the end, Cambiasso took over for Jimenez and Ibra for Adriano. Jimenez was ok, especially given all the time out he has had, but boy, did Cambiasso make a difference. I still dont like Chivu in midfield. He was adequate, but not great.

I was able to find some highlights of the game – set to C’e Solo l’Inter for some reason (available in high quality at youtube):

As you can see, Crespo had some great shots on goal and a super work rate during the game. Of course, he did not score, but he was on target and on side so that is a huge improvement for him. Also, he gets extra marks for passion. I am sure that if I could lip-read Spanish after some of those miraculously saved shots, I think my eyes would be burning. Welcome back Crespo, I knew you were in there somewhere. Mourinho is also happy with him saying:

“Hernan was unlucky not to score, but was lucky to have a pleased coach.”

The Sending Off

Genoa went to 10 men early in the first half when when defender Giuseppe Biava was sent off for a last-man foul on Adriano (according to ESPN and Channel 4). True, Adriano had his feet taken out just outside (like a couple inches) the box, but when he came down from the tackle he was in the penalty area. The penalty was only given after consultation with the linesman. Adriano’s penalty was stopped by the keeper so the ref’s error came to nothing.

Muntari

Muntari had a spectacularly horrible game. He was booked in 34th minute and was extremely lucky not to have picked up a second. According to La Gazzetta, Muntari should have been shown a second yellow for a foul on Vanden Borre. I admit, I was working during the game and only half watching for parts of it. I did not see the foul in question so I cannot speak to it. I will defer to La Gazzetta. I will say that I was glad to see Obinna come on in his place for the second half, though.

Moving On

With this win, Inter book a spot in the quarterfinals and will take on Roma next. No one was injured, and a couple players got a chance to work some kinks out, so maybe this coppa thing is not so bad after all. True, we let a goal in and probably should have put the game away in a lot sooner, but you cant fault Inter for Genoa’s great keeper and no one could have stopped Rossi’s goal. In the end, I am happy. Chivu, Jimenez, Adriano, and Crespo all showed improvement in their game; Burdisso did not give me a single gray hair; and Zanetti had a beautiful strike (saved of course). Hopefully we will take this momentum with us to Bergamo on Sunday.

FORZA INTER

Isn’t nice to see everyone smiling again?
Hugs and smiles for Crespo, Adriano, and Maicon.

“…and no one could have stopped Rossi’s goal.”

I always say it is impossible to defend a great strike and that was one heck of a strike. If you force someone into a shot from there and the shot is of that quality, you have to applaud the person who shot it.

Thanks for linking the highlights Jo. I didn’t get to tune into the game until the ~50th minute, so it was good to see what happened.

I was glad to see Adriano and Crespo on the pitch. Adriano looked a little sluggish from what I saw in the second half. Mostly standing at the 18 waiting for someone to play him, rather than making a play himself. Yet when Maxwell played that cross he sure had a wonderful finish. On the PK he placed it well the keeper just made a nice save. Next time he needs to trust the amazing left foot he has and crush it with his laces.

As for Muntari I didn’t get to see a single minute he played so I can’t comment on the fouls. However, his ability to run down the Genoa winger after he rounded Toldo should make up for his blunders. I dont get using Obinna on the left side for him. O didn’t seem to want, or be able to, make a decent cross with his left. So that was kinda ugly.

And Chivu in the midfield is kinda dumb. He showcased his un-creativity in those highlights when he got in the box and just dribbled off the keeper. Real smooth.

Cant wait for the one-and-done with Roma.

*edit above: just realized its a home-and-home with Roma, dumb. But the 180 minutes give the far superior talent of Inter more margin for error.

I saw the Muntari foul, and he’s extremely lucky not to have been sent off.

Scarpi produced miracle after miracle. Otherwise, both Crespo (Johonna, in your intro before the line-up you wrote “Crepo” – a Freudian slip, perhaps?) and Adriano could’ve had hat-tricks… Even Adri’s penalty was well placed – it was a world-class save by the Genoa keeper.

And what’s up with the San Siro pitch? First Samuel slips against Cag-lee-aree then last night Maicon slips after a great run right before shooting… Both Maxwell and Adriano slipped a few times too.

Obinna is a good talent, but to me he seems to be too selfish. Any thoughts?

Also, the highlights video above does not show Adriano’s amazing bicycle kick and follow-up(s), and his clever back-heel, both of which were on target, but both … alas, again saved heroically by Scarpi. You could see Adriano saying, “I’m done with this guy” after he finally scored in the 75th…

This is the crunch time for our season.

If our season is like interval training, then we are coming up to a sprint.

In the next six weeks we have 10 games including Coppa, League and Champions League.

Notable fixtures include Roma twice, the derby with the MATCH FIXING CHEATS who use our stadium and Manchester United.

This is part of the schedule is going to determine who is fighting for the scudetto. Personally, I think that the League is more important than any other competition. I hope that the team feels the same way.

Speaking of fouls, did anyone see the De Rossi from behind with the spikes up foul today against Samp?

Got away clean, without a booking.

On a completely unrelated note, that is not to in any way infer that De Rossi – an important cog in the Roma machine- who missed a booking which just so happens to help Roma climb from the obscure depths of the table while the only player that is worth a damn is out injured for an extended period of time, Muntari will miss the Atalanta game due to an accumulation of yellows.

No slip, Skyder, just tired eyes – I think I wrote the thing at midnight last night. And about the pitch at the San Siro, it is notoriously bad. It doesn’t get enough sun and tends to hold too much water. The weather has been very cold in Milan, and I suspect they are having problems with frost and ice. The horrible pitch is one of the excuses Milan used last year for their poor showing in the league.

Obinna had at least one howler that I recall: Genoa were on a break and I think Chivu (but I could be wrong – bad feed) was clearing when Obinna ran into him, knocking them both over. Luckily there were other players to deal with the loose ball, but boy, was it ugly.

I think Obinna is hungry to prove himself, much like Balotelli. That is why they tend to hold the ball and shoot when they should pass. Hopefully they will both grow out of it.

MAD, Muntari needs the break. I dont know what the problem was, but he was crazy dangerous against Genoa.

The announcing is in Arabic but all are over 5 minutes each so show quite a bit of the action. I think Adriano’s failed bicycle kick is there (in the second half).

I was glad to see Adri and Crespo get back out there but am I the only one who thought Obinna played like garbage? I don’t remember him getting a single shot on goal and losing possession more than a couple times. And his corner kicks were the cherry on top. They reminded me of Oddo’s crosses. Can a team as deep as Inter really not have someone else to take a corner? I miss the days of Recoba, Veron, and Mihajlovic…

Send Obinna out in January and bring back Bobby. Plus we’ve spent too much $$ on Mancini and Quaresma to not be playing them in a Coppa Italia match; that’s where they work out the kinks.

SS, I think Mou was using this game for players to come off injury, and to show Maradona our Argies (all of them played).
