Wow. I cant believe it is time for the new season – this summer has just flown by. Ready or not, here we are, on the eve of a new season and ready to defend our scudetto… again. This time we start against the newly promoted side of Bari. To say they have something to prove is an understatement. They will come to the San Siro eager to show they belong in the Serie A and with nothing to lose. This one may be tricky.
NO HIGHLIGHTS, HOW ABOUT A LITTLE HISTORY
It has been a long time since Inter and Bari have met on the pitch in a “real” game (we played a friendly last summer, but that hardly counts). The last time was in 2002 for a Coppa Italia match. Ominously, that was the last time Bari played at the San Siro and they beat Inter 1-2 (they beat us in the away leg, too). To find a league match-up, you have to go all the way back to the 2000/2001 season. Inter fared better that year, beating Bari both at home and away (note Bobo scoring the winning goal in Milan above). Generally speaking, Inter usually beat Bari, both at home and away. Of the 29 times Inter and Bari have played in Milan, Inter has lost only 3 games. In addition, we have out scored them by a factor of 3 (74 to 21). When you look at all 58 meetings between Bari and Inter in the Serie A, though, Bari fare a bit better: Inter have won 32, drawn 14, and won 12. Plus, with Bari’s home games added in, Inter have only scored twice as many goals as they have. Still, however you look at it, Inter have the advantage – statistically speaking that is.
THEM
Luckily, Bari has a blogger on this board so I dont have to do much here. Thank goodness because I know almost nothing about this team (except that I have a Pavlovian want for breakfast cereal when I see their crest).
My Football Italia magazine has a little write-up about the team where they point out that under Conte, Bari played an attacking 4-4-2 that easily morphed into a 4-2-4 in order to exploit the width of the pitch. Now, though, without Conte, Football Italia wondered if Bari would play a more “traditionally Italian” defensive game. I guess we will see tomorrow, wont we.
Hopefully Eros will post the call-up list as I cant find any information – anywhere. So, In lieu of a possible line-up, I have been in contact with Eros (the Bari blogger) who was nice enough to answer a couple of my questions:
Which player do you think will make the biggest impact for Bari and why?
Our keeper Jean-Francois Gillet will definitely have the biggest impact for us. Since coming in 2000 he has become not only our captain but also the third most capped player in the history of Bari with 280 mathces to his name. He represents everything that Bari stands for and he will be looking to prove himself against the likes of Eto’o and El Principe Milito.Which player do you wish would never take the field and why?
I think all our players our consistent so this question is hard. I would say that it’s between Lamberti and Paro. I know that their both very promising players for us, Lamberti being one of the most talented young keepers in italy and Paro being able to provide a lot of depth to our squad. The reason I chose these two players are because if Lamberti plays tomorrow against Inter it means that Gillet would have to get injured and Paro is not in form and still recovering from injury so I wouldn’t want Bari to risk him. What do you think Bari’s main strong points are as a team?
Our strong points right now are our surprise aspect and our hunger to prove that our place is in Serie A. We have very talented players like Ranocchia and Barreto who Inter don’t fully know yet, that’s were the surprise aspect would come from. As the season grows on managers will be able to know and understand the movements of our players having studied our previous performances, but this being our first match, there could be a lot of room for some surprises. After being back in the Serie A we won’t let anyone stop us without giving a fight, Inter or Chievo no one will find an easy match against the galletti. Our hunger to thrive is huge and probably our strongest point right now.
The only thing I want to add is that Inter youth product, Meggiorini, will be suspended for this game.
US
Mourinho has called up 20 players:
Portieri: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Difensori: Cordoba, Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Materazzi, Chivu, Santon.
Centrocampisti: Stankovic, Quaresma, Thiago Motta, Muntari, Vieira, Krhin, Mancini.
Attaccanti: Eto’o, Milito, Balotelli.
Mou seems quite clear in his mind with who he has convened and who will play tomorrow, saying: “I have a game to play tomorrow, I have 20 players convened, I know without doubt the team that will start in the game, I know which players will be on the bench.”
He also dropped a hint or two about formations:
In this time without Esteban Cambiasso have two options to deploy the team with the roar: to play with Stankovic in the trquartista position insert Vieira or Zanetti in the defensive position of the diamond. There is no other option. If we are still lacking one of these players, I will not play like that, but I’ll play with three players in midfield and with three players in attack.

Watch out Julio, the man is made of tissue paper and we need him to stay in working order!
So, what do you bet the game will start like this:
JC
Maicon – Lucio – Chivu – Zanetti
Muntari – Vieira – T.Motta
Stankovic
Eto’o – Milito
But I dont think Vieira can play a full game. At some point, he will come out. Hopefully, at that point Santon will go in, moving Zanetti up and dropping Stankovic back to make room for Balotelli. Complicated, I know. I am also interested to see Krhin on the call-up list. It seems that of all the youth players Mou has been toying with this summer, he is the one that has impressed the most.
Moving on to transfer issues, Mourinho refused to speak about either Sneijder or Burdisso saying those were matters for the club. He did, though, speak a bit about Cassano and why all those rumors turned out to be false, saying:
“I do not want players who scored against us (Smiles). He scored and I did not take him in to my team, the same happened with Acquafresca. Milito has never done it and is now at Inter. If it comes to players who have scored against us, they celebrated the goal and now they want to come here, I do not want it … (Smiles). I like Antonio, but when he scored goals against us he canceled the possibility to come to my team.”
Good thing he was smiling when he said that or someone might actually have believed him. Still, let that be a warning to all those in Serie A who would like to wear the Black and Blue – score against us and feel Mou’s mighty wrath! No Inter for you…. EVER (mwahahaaaaa). Well, or at least if you score against us, dont celebrate.
No, but he was not serious. Mourinho did admit that he was keeping his eye on Cassano and come winter, things may look differently. He said: “Cassano plays as a striker at Sampdoria. If by December he has played for his national team and played as a trequartista, then I will take a good look at him. Then I will decide in December.”
So all you Cassano lovers, cross your fingers and pray that he finally gets a call-up.
As we head into our next season, on the hunt for our fifth consecutive scudetto, I feel it is imperative that we do not go into this match with any preconceived notions of superiority. The team must not consider themselves favorites or we may end up with egg on our faces. Bari can beat Inter – and boy howdy would they love to take 3 points back to APuglia (whoops). True, on paper Inter has everything they need to put a serious hurting on Bari, but half of our starting line-up is new this year and there has not been much time for the team to really gel and find that automatic understanding between players. I am afraid that we may see a few slack passes tomorrow and miss-timed runs. Also, losing Cambiasso is not good. Really not good. I have faith in our depth, but Vieira always makes me nervous.

Oh no, it looks like Balotelli has been taking Thiago Motta to his barber. Stripes?!?
Allora, Ragazzi, ora cominciamo la nostra nuova stagione, non come i campioni d’Italia, ma con zero punti, come tutte le altre squadre. Ora dobbiamo provare a noi stessi e vincere. Numero 18, ci siamo!
FORZA INTER
Well, maybe we can afford to look back just a little, although the Ibra thing still smarts:

Oh pardon me antonio I didnt know you were a bilanista. But that would explain why you’re such a d**k head. Now if theres one thing I will say Inter does better then any other team in the world is beating you filthy little rats in the derby. We’re better at beating you guys then lazio are at beating roma or juve are at beating toro (RIP) or Genoa are at beating samp (or vice versa depending on which team you support). The only team in the world thats better at beating their biggest rival then us is barcelona. Cuz of the 6-2 thrashing they dealt real. Haha that will teach those rich scumbags that money doesnt by success.

well yeah Im guessing that you’re right alessio simply because I dont watch enough la liga. Its so difficult to find when you have cable. But thats all changed now that espn has it. HURRAY!!!!! You know what I love watching the CL on FSC its waaaaaaaaaay better then it was on espn. They have a full recap of all the day’s action which you didnt get on espn and they have a full preview before their featured game and they showed more then one game even if it wasnt live. On espn they would have like a 5 second review and then have like a billion commercial breaks before the game started. And then they had one shitty little highlights show which was on friday a full two days after the games. I mean come on FRIDAY???? Im not going to watch it on friday cuz by then I will have watched the highlights of the match on one of those internet sites. Since its next to impossible to get some good highlights on youtube. Although now it is nice to hear some commentary in english in the highlights considering how most of the highlights I ended up watching had that really shitty arab commentary and not to mention no HD either and the audio sucked as well. And the commentators on those channels are weird. Oh and one more thing Ray Hudson needs to be the color commentator for the fsc champions league games now. Hes so fucking funny. Without him gol tv is just plain boring. “ORGASMIC JUBILATION”

Ray Hudson is simply the best. Not to mention his obsession with Riquelme. I swear to god he wants to be in a sex tape with that guy. If any of you dont know who he is and then i suggest you go to youtube and type in: ray hudson commentator. Oh and I actually never knew this about him but he is a newcastle united fan. Poor sob the past few years havent been easy for the poor geordies.

Antonio I’ve decided that I have no interest in talking to you anymore so I will just say this and that will be it (oh and you better not remove this johonna cuz I will censor every word myself ok? Good). So here it is: First of all I couldn’t give a flying f**k about what you have to say, second your full of s**t cuz i dont put everything in caps cuz otherwise this all would be in f***ing caps, third you must be a complete dips**t who is incapable of reading what other people write before he comments on it cuz you clearly didnt read anything I wrote while I actually read what you wrote (with great displeasure might I add), and lastly if you’re so sorry that you have to deal with all the apparent s**t that I write then why the f**k do you read it? I mean if you know its going to be bad then just dont read it. Its just like people complaining about mourinho and what he says. No one forced you to listen and no one is obligating you to either. And if you want an example of someone getting the piss taken out of them or rahter a group of people getting the piss taken out of them then look no further then next week’s derby where your delightful bunch of c**keyed dinosaurs will have their testicles served to them on a silver plate with their spleens soon following.

Can someone please tell me what the hell Deki was doing when Bari scored? The goal was mostly his fault and part Lucio’s fault.
We’ve milked it for long enough. Deki belongs on the wing and has no business playing in cambiasso’s role. He just does not have what it takes. I would rather go with samuel/cordoba and chivu at cb and have Lucio play cambiasso’s position until he is healed.

I am not going to be able to handle stankovic playing central roles all season. Relying on him puts us at a disadvantage and I think he is more useful out wide, if useful at all.

Subbing Vieira off was a mistake. Based on the going ons in today’s match I would have done the following.
1) Bringing on Balo for sulley was fine.
2) I would have taken deki out and moved Balo to the “1″ and put RQ on the wing or vice versa.
3) Because Materazzi was carded and Vieira was subbed off, it was right to put cordoba on for him.
If….
Materazzi was never cautioned and vieira was still on, I would have considered giving santon a run out in place of maicon.

why isn’t Santon starting??

What a terrible performance. I watched the game dumbfounded at how ugly this Inter side can play.
The formation was garbage. Zanetti in the back is a waste of his talents. Vieira just sucks. Motta, his midfield partner, seemed to never move. He’s just a boring and unassertive player. Still, Inter dominated the first half.
When Quaresma came on in the second half, Inter stopped working the attack through Maicon. Why? Q just dances around and sends in a cross that finds nobody, consistently. Thats when their dominace subsided. One of the rare bright spots was Balo’s play on the right wing. He and Maicon should have been able to work some magic on that side. But no, the ball was always over with Q. And when its just Ricky and the LB is not left footed, Inter couldn’t play a good ball in. So frustrating.
Some positives I saw, however, were Eto’o and Milito look like they could form a nice strike partnership. Wait, that, and Mario were the only positives.
Mou better make some changes for the Milan game. I know he will, but damn this was such a shitty way to start the season.

Paolo, the whole thing was just all kinds of terrible in the midfield. If Muntari isn’t weak from hunger and heat, does anyone think he can play in Cambiasso’s spot? Or even Zanetti? Vieira gives me agita and Deki just cannot hold the plot together for a whole 90 right now. I like Balotelli as the 1, and I thought Ricky was actually pretty good when he came on.
Oh, and apparently this Sneijder thing is not over yet. We are all going back to the table on Monday. And Rivas is set to go to Livorno next week, too. As for Mancini, rumor is is they make it to the Europa League, he will go there on loan for a year.

Hmm, see, I saw that Ricky hardly ever connected with anyone, but I thought he was better than when Motta was at that position. At least it felt like he was trying.
I think Balotelli played well.

“Inter stopped working the attack through Maicon. Why?”
Buckets, because every attack that went through Maicon broke down too. His passes were awful, as were most of his crosses. He carried the ball up the wing and rarely did anything with it. I wasn’t too thrilled with Maicon today. Just my opinion but I’m sure not many will agree with me. I would rather have Balotelli carrying the ball up the wing then Maicon any day. He can make more happen. Maicon couldn’t really press with him or over lap him because then that would leave us a man short coming back. Balo certainly wasn’t going to drop back and cover Maicon in the defense. Also, with a 1-0 lead to protect and Vieira off, that kind of killed Maicon making runs. If you moved Lucio over to cover for a Maicon run you would then have to rely on Deki or Motta to cover for Lucio. No thanks! Leaves us too stretched. If you really want to see Maicon pressing then someone like Zanetti would have to line up in front of him (and then cover him) and I think that limits the squad.
Johonna, with as much grinta as Sulley has and as much as I love to see him play in our midfield, I don’t think he has the brain to play in Cambiasso’s spot. Plus, he’d be giving fouls away left, right and in dangerous spots. There is no doubt he is a red card waiting to happen there. Zanetti could possibly do it but I think he is needed more on the flanks. I would feel most comfortable with Vieira or Lucio doing it for now.
Vieira, for all the agita he has caused, didn’t play all that bad today. There were far worse players on the pitch and I think the failure to pick up 3 points was the fault of both the players on the pitch and Mourinho.
But it’s a opening day 1-1 draw. A familiar result on opening days of recent seasons. Improvement is required and the squad knows this.

Lucio in front of the defense while Cambiasso is out is an interesting idea.
I hadn’t thought of that one.
Posted from

Paolo, in all fairness to Deki, I thought Lucio was more to blame for that goal. We all know he loves to push forward occasionally, but if he gets caught out at the back like that, its disaster. Still, I’m sure with Cambiasso we wouldn’t see a situation like that.
Also, I agree that Muntari doesn’t really have the intelligence to play Cambiasso’s role. In fact, I doubt if even Zanetti can actually do so, with all due respect to him. Vieira a generation ago played that role for Arsenal, so we know he has the intelligence to do it. But whether he can manage to string together a set of consistent performances is doubtful. Anyone think Krhin could be thrown in at the deep end to sub for Cambiasso?
I wouldn’t pick Lucio to play in front of defence though. He’s good on the ball, but not that good. I’d rather have Chivu. He’s played CM before, and he has a good range of passes, and is definitely closer to Cambiasso’s level of intelligence.
Posted from

I have Chivu play as a sweeper in front of the defense for the Romanian National team before. That might be his more ‘natural position’.
I don’t agree about Muntari, although he seemed out of it today. He was used in Udinese as a cm if I am not mistaken. I think he just plays better on the left.
I think that Mourinho would cut both wrists before putting Krhin out there in any capacity other than clock killing sub with .02 seconds left.
In my opinion there was a lot of switching confusion that normally happened last season but wasn’t quite automatic with this new system.

ok im going to admit it but im kind of scared that we could lose our title to juve or milan. Am I being to pessimistic after all this is only the first day of the season but this was by far our worst performance in the past 3 years. This is the third time we have tied our opening game but at least the other two times we played well and our opponents were udinese and sampdoria. Two teams who are no pushovers. But we werent playing sampdoria, udinese, or fiorentina. We were playing Bari. A team who had just been promoted from Serie B. I am very angry with the players, mainly because that is not how the four time (3 if you’re a rubentino) italian champions should play. I was definitely not expecting this especially after the good pre season we had. The only positive from the game for me was that after the first goal we played well and perhaps the game would have had a different result if eto’o hadnt missed that sitter of a second goal. Lets be fair Bari could have won the game in the last minute. And really their goal was the result of lucio being nowhere where he should have been and stankovic just ball watching. I dont know. Mad, Johonna are we in trouble already this season and do you think that this may be the year that juve overhaul us? I sure as hell hope not. Only we can mess up this scudetto. Really we dont need a trequartista to win it this year but one would help us tie and lose less and win more. Mad and Johonna I guess Im really asking you guys if we can win the derby. And who the hell is in charge of the fixtures cuz I really feel like shoving my foot up his ass. For the second year we have to play the derby before we are back to full strength. Its so annoying cuz we can beat them easily but playing them on the second day will just be more difficult then playing them on the 5th day last year. Regardless of the fact we beat them twice I still do not trust those filthy rats to play badly again like they have before. And of course they’re in good form before the derby and were not. Same situation as last year only now were fucked even more. Mourinho needs to bench materazzi and put on samuel with lucio. Then he should just put santon on the left and maicon on the right. Oh just great maicon isnt playing well either wonderful news. And in the middle of the park we put muntari, zanetti, and thiago motta. And I guess we put deki behind eto’o and milito. Damn it without cambiasso who is gonna stop ronaldinho. As I remember it was cambiasso who shacked him in the game in boston. And now that he is gone how are we gonna stop him and pato? I fear that we may have already given the edge in the midfield to milan because of the absence of cambiasso.

Oh, I think we can beat them, Micky, but I a not all that sure that we will beat them.
I think Mou is going to beat the team senseless this week. Plus, training will be absolutely closed so there will be no distractions.
Mostly, I think the problems are that he is still tinkering, trying to decide who plays where in which each system – which is sort of annoying because except for Eto’o, he has had a good month to work all this out.
I am still just about tearing my hair out that it never occurred to someone that Cuchu would get injured. There doesn’t seem to be a real contingency plan. Plus, Vieira should never be a player that we rely on. He should be a last resort. Whatever he was “a generation ago,” he is not that any longer.
Right. As for the upcoming season: I think this squad has more depth that the one from 2007/8 – and we won that one. But, I think Juve is a much better team now than then too. I dont know about Milan… They seem like a baby deer on tottery legs – I am not sure whether they will fall flat on their faces or take off running.
The fact of the matter is, though, that we cant win every year. Sooner or later it will someone else’s turn. We may be used to it, but it cant last forever. I just really really dont want it to be those smug bastards from Turin.

yeah cuz those assholes will definitely just rub it in our faces. But I’ll tell you now I would rather not have milan win it because then the 17th scudetto we have would be meaningless. I will be so fucking happy if we win the 18th title cuz then we will have more then our evil cousins and then they can their scudetti and shove it up their asses. Yes and I agree about Vieira he is far too old to be a consistent player for us. And I really would rather just have stankovic as a central midfielder as opposed to the role of trequartista. He does really well in that role sometimes like in the game against lazio and the game against juve but then he can do badly in that role as well like he did today. And let me just say that bari’s goal was because of lucio’s bad positional play. If he had been where he was supposed to be that wouldnt have happened. Now what I am really expecting us to do is to get full points in the champions league group stage regardless of the opponent. Yes it will be difficult without a trequartista but we may yet just get one and if we do then I say we are equal to any team in the world. Even Barcelona. Even Chelsea. I dont care who we get I expect the squad to play like they did against man united in the second leg, without conceding two goals of course. And I expect us to play like we did against lazio in the supercup without losing of course. Look this team is capable of playing really well and we saw how much potential they have in the supercup. But I want to see MORE of that in the league.

Motta can definitely play the “water carrier” role that Esteban has shined in for the last few years. Stankovic certainly cannot. Viera needs to take up basketball.

Some disquieting stats from the game (from the Lega Calcio):
Recovered Balls
Lucio (INTER) 20
Ranocchia Andrea (BARI) 18
Masiello Andrea (BARI) 17
Bonucci Leonardo (BARI) 16
Parisi Alessandro (BARI) 16
Gazzi Alessandro (BARI) 16Where the hell is Inter’s MIDFIELD on that list?
Oh, but it gets worse:
Shots
Alvarez (BARI) 5
Stankovic Dejan (INTER) 4
Eto’o (INTER) 4
Balotelli (INTER) 3
Kutuzov Vitalii (BARI) 2
Maicon (INTER) 2Where the hell is MILITO on this list? Ok, I get that we have four of the top six in terms of shots, but shouldn’t Milito be up there before Deki or Maicon? Yikes.
At least there is one thing we can do well:
Completed Passes
Thiago Motta (INTER) 69
Maicon (INTER) 50
Stankovic Dejan (INTER) 47
Gazzi Alessandro (BARI) 47
Parisi Alessandro (BARI) 44
Zanetti Javier (INTER) 40Motta for central midfielder anyone?
Oh, and MAD and I are trying to work out the mechanics of sharing this space. There will be a recap, just not today. I swear.
Posted from

I’ll tell you where Milito was – he was spoon-feeding Eto’o chance after chance. Out of those 5 shots Eto’o took, 2 were direct assists from Milito. One was a penalty. Two others came from other players. Milito worked his ass off today, and maybe if the roles were reversed, he would’ve finished off the sitter Eto’o missed.
And the recovered balls stats tells you exactly how much Cambiasso means to this team. I had my apprehensions when he picked up his injury, but people were confident we could replace him. Motta seems to be intelligent enough, the stats are in his favour, but he’s shown that he occasionally goes missing. And for the Cambiasso role, there are simply no days off.
MAD, I wouldn’t discount Krhin so easily. If Mourinho gets angry enough / desperate enough, he may just toss Krhin into the fray. Isn’t that how Santon moved from Primavera player to Azzurri star, facing Milan, Juventus and Man Utd along the way?
Posted from
United States

-

Well, okay but even then, Mourinho hasn’t just handed the reigns to Santon… although he might start to soon. Although I don’t think that Santon faced Juventus yet.
If Krhin gets thrown into the fray and comes out a real professional, I will be the first to stand up and cheer.
I think the kid has something and he looks eager to prove it, I just wonder if Mourinho will give him a chance this season. There is already a lot of pressure riding on a lot of risk.
Posted from

I feel sorry for the kid Khrin Mourinho has a lot of pressure considering everyone in Italy is hoping Inter looses , the team has being changed and adding Khrin to that Changes certainly would hurt the team , this season the only thing Inter has that Juventus doesn’t have is how to win the Seria A and to do that u can only rely on ur experience players who knows back and front of 99% of every team except Bari which is why i ant surprise with the results so for me we need experience but my only worry is bench Stankovic and give Zanneti that Role then just play our experience boy Santon and i bet u Zanneti can run , he thinks , strong in short he can do better then Stenkovic . For Khrin well Super Copa .

This blog has turn into a roost for all the Interista Chicken Littles out there. This team has only been together for ~4 weeks. ~50% of this team hasn’t played together before August.
Strikers who rely on their finishing (unlike Ibra) need to be game fit to play to their best. Ours are not, yet. They had 3 or 4 opportunities for absolutely gorgeous goals yesterday. Come mid-September those will be bulging the proverbial onion bag.
Inter dropped two points to Samp at the beginning of last season and we still finished 10 pts above Juve. We also lost to Milan early last season but let’s not repeat that one.
