Inter v Lazio: Is Eight too Much to Ask?

By: Johonna | January 21st, 2012

Zanetti v Lazio

Ok. So we have done all this work, dragging ourselves up the table, but now we have hit a bit of a wall at fifth. If we can manage to beat Lazio, though, we can move up to fourth – one step closer to a coveted CL spot. Lazio are a tough opponent and, despite the relatively friendly atmosphere between the clubs, this will be a cagey match where any mistake will be punished. There is just no room for error on Sunday. But perfection is a big ask for a team that some think are already playing at the end of their ropes. After the derby win last week then midweek against Genoa, is an eighth win in a row just just a bridge too far for this squad? They are only human, after all (well, except Zanetti. He is clearly superhuman and beyond explanation.)

What: Inter v Lazio, the epic battle for Fourth Place
Where: Frosty Milan
When: Sunday, 8:45pm local time (11:45am pacific, 2:45pm eastern)
How to Watch: Live on RAI Internazionale, ESPN3 USA, Fox Soccer Channel, and FOX Deportes, or one of these channels. Or, you can find a stream (Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).
Liveblog: Kirby is travelling but I bet MAD and I can work something out. Check back here 15 minutes before kickoff.

Inter has a pretty good home record against Lazio:

Inter v Lazio stats

Inter hasn’t lost this fixutre since an epic 3-5 smackdown in 1998 when the likes of Nedved and Mancini played for the Biancocelesti. Last year Inter beat Lazio 2-1 after a goal from Sneijder, another from Eto’o and a converted penalty from Zarate. And all that with 10 men (poor Julio Cesar was sent off in the aforementioned penalty). Once again, watch the video at your own risk. The Eto’o is sublime.

THEM

Lazio is one of those rare teams with a better away record than at home:
Lazio record

That said, they are not invulnerable. The stumbled a bit against Siena (or fell down a 4-0 flight of stairs), then they had to resort to injury time heroics to secure a win over Hellas Verona in the Coppa Italia. Still, they come to this game on a high note, after beating Atalanta last week 2-0. When you narrow it down to the top four teams, Lazio has a mixed record: they drew 2-2 against both Udinese and Milan, and lost 0-1 against Juve.

So ya, we definitely have a shot, but it will be hard.

Lazio dont seem to have much trouble scoring goals. Miroslav Klose has been in great form, scoring 9 goals in 17 games. Hernanes has also been doing well with four goals, while Cisse has been a bit of a bust with only one goal in 16 games. Like Inter, they have have a fair a few injured players. Yesterday, Rocchi was a maybe but he must have passed a fitness test as he is on his way to Milan. Brocchi, Canna, Kozak, Makinwa, and Mauri are all not so lucky and are still in the injury ward. To help make up the numbers, Lazio have just picked up a new Uruguayan striker, Emiliano Alfaro, but it doesn’t look like he is coming to Milan. I guess he needs a little more time to settle in.

So, if we are to believe La Gazzetta, that leaves us with a 4-3-1-2:
Lazio formation

Formidable!

Pre Lazio training 1
It looks like a cold, clear day in Milan.

US

CR has convened 21 players:

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar, Castellazzi, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Ranocchia, Samuel, Chivu, Faraoni, Nagatomo.
Midfielders: Sneijder, Alvarez, Poli, Cambiasso, Obi.
Forwards: Pazzini, Milito, Zarate, Castaignos.

Thiago Motta is out for yellow card accumulation. Coutinho, Stankovic and Forlan are injured. In the case of Forlan, I think it is just best to forget he is even on the roster. That way, we wont be disappointed when he cant play and it will be a real special treat if he ever does get well enough to string two games together. Sort of like finding $20 in the pocket of a coat you haven’t worn for a while. Whatever was wrong with Chivu, he must be feeling better or he wouldn’t have made the list. I think we have all seen how cautious CR is about injured players. Oh, and I almost forgot, everyone’s favorite player, Muntari, is still out with the ACN (he is really starting to piss me off with his transfer shenanigans).

In terms of lineups, I think that we will go in a Derby sort of way (sans TM, of course) with:

Julio Cesar
Maicon Lucio Samuel Nagatomo
Faraoni Zanetti Cambiasso Alvarez
Milito Pazzini

Faraoni is a bit of a long shot, but CR says he wants to ease Sneijder back (so he doesn’t re-injure himself) and with Coutinho out, I just dont know who else he would play. Maybe Poli but he also looked a bit winded after 75 minutes against Genoa. He may not have another game in him quite yet. But who knows. Ranieri is always surprising me.

pre lazio training 2
It’s hard to say what is happening here but Chivu sure looks confused about something.

CR seems very determined about this game. In his presser today, he said that this game against Lazio will be much more difficult that the derby as Lazio is “a strong, dynamic side.” (Anyone want to guess at whether that was an intentional dig at Milan or it just came out that way?) He went on to point out that Lazio have earned more points than any other team in the second half. Yikes.

A quick look at our scoring times verses theirs shows what Ranieri is worried about. Notice how they have only conceded seven goals in the second half. Inter, on the other hand, seems to loose a little concentration towards the end of the games, allowing twice as many goals in the second half as Lazio has. Of course, we have managed by making up for it with scoring more goals, but we cant always count on the attack to make up for the defense.

Inter v Lazio scoring times

Ok. So we all said that the derby would be the big game – the real test as to whether this team had a real shot at something or if we would be spending our Thursdays next year playing obscure Eastern European teams in the Europa League. And we were right, we have to take points against the teams ahead of us if we want to move up the table. But it is relatively easy to get the squad worked up over a derby. Everyone knows they are important and everyone wants to do well. That is not the case with Lazio. These points are every bit as important as last week’s but there isn’t the hype around this game to keep everyone on their toes and the squad is that much more fatigued. That makes this game hard. These guys are human and eight wins in a row may just be a bit too much to ask, especially with an important quarter final against Napoli mid week.

But…

This is our chance to make a meaningful move up the table. Hell, if Catania can stop Udinese, we could even go joint third. Third! Can you imagine?!? It makes me giddy just to think of it. I know we cant win every game, but I really really really want to win this one. I want to finally wash the acrid taste of mid-table out of our mouths, to put those wasted days behind us and to demonstrate to world that Inter is not quite over yet. Three points against Lazio tomorrow would send a clear message. Oh, and make me one happy camper.

So lets go get fourth.

FORZA INTER

I cant remember if I posted this already or not:

And because I have become obsessed with this (really, I cant stop watching it):

For today's Coppa clash with juve, Roma only fielded one Italian in their starting eleven. And that one was 35-year-old Totti. WHY IS ROMA TRYING TO DESTROY ITALIAN FOOTBALL!!!!

Also, remember when every club on earth wanted to sign Kjaer? Eek.

  • If we lose Thiago Motta, so help me God, I will fly to Milan and commit unspeakable acts of violence to many persons on the Inter payroll.

  • Kerry9000

he is a great player, but if he wants to go for the mega bucks begone, him not playing for PSG and him staying with us and being unhappy is the same thing, i would take the 8-10million they offer and roll the dice on poli or another youngster

  • Vinod

Somehow I don't think he will leave. He has too much to lose with his first big tournament for the Azzurri coming up in the summer. He already has it all here, and my (perhaps wishful) feeling is that he's just angling for a new contract.

  • there is no clear replacement for motta in our team or on the market right now. i hope that he doesn't leave.

  • Dimas Greenlite

maybe in terms on how inter play lately, but im sure poli taken all experience advantage from his mentor such as zanetti, cambiasso, and motta itself. Poli have a great skill also on keeping the ball, good on defense, but he not such a good ground passer. But come on, he only 21 years old, he got a lot of time to become next motta at Inter. But i disagree if motta leave on January, maybe at summer yes.

    some news about Mourinho
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/foot...

  • Maryam1908

I'm bored at work, so I have a bit of a news round up for you...

7 transfer transactions with Parma, and they are as follows:

-Cicero Moreira Jonathan: temporary loan to Parma I am happy about this, cause he might prove himself useful, otherwise he becomes our worst purchase this year...-Joel Obi: Inter have purchased the other half of his contract, making the deal permanent. Yay for this bit of news, I am happy!-Lorenzo Crisetig: a transfer to Parma on a co-ownership deal, although he will remain at Inter on loan until the end of the season. See SR, it ain't so bad!

-Diego Mella (1993, forward): a transfer to Parma on a co-ownership deal.
-Jacopo Galimberti (1993, defender): a transfer to Parma on a co-ownership deal.
-Gaetano Monachello (1994, forward): temporary loan to Parma.-Yao Guy Eloge Koffi (1996, defender, born in Akrroukro, Ivory Coast): a transfer to Inter on a co-ownership deal, although he will remain at Parma on loan.

The call up list for Napoli's match is as follows:

    Goalkeepers: 1 Julio Cesar, 12 Luca Castellazzi, 21 Paolo Orlandoni;Defenders: 2 Ivan Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Lucio, 13 Maicon, 23 Andrea Ranocchia, 25 Walter Samuel, 26 Cristian Chivu, 37 Davide Faraoni;
    Midfielders: 8 Thiago Motta, 10 Wesley Sneijder, 11 Ricardo Alvarez, 18 Andrea Poli, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 20 Joel Obi;
Forwards: 7 Giampaolo Pazzini, 22 Diego Milito, 28 Mauro Zarate, 30 Luc Castaignos.

You will notice that Nagatomo isn't on the list because of an injury. Kirbs, as a result I am 99% sure that we'll see your beloved Chivu as a LB, which will upset about 99% of the people :P

Rano and Motta won awards this week, each nabbing the "most ideal defender" and "most ideal midfielder" titles. Also, they both looked fine in their suits, especially Motta.

  • PDubz18

To add to that, Maicon just signed a 2 year contract extension. And Kucka is replacing Sulley Muntari. And Lucas might will probably come in June.

    All good news!

EDIT: Oh and we're the in-form team in Europe. And Ranieri isn't a big bumbling idiot.

  • I missed the game live but caught it last night.  The most exciting thing about it was Max Patrick's return to Inter games!

Seriously though, I am nowhere near caring about the style of football/attacking flair right now.  Winning is bringing me enough joy and entertainment.  But we do need to do something about our passing.  Looking forward to the coppa game and even more to the 2nd half of Serie A.

  • SunRiver

    This made my day.

Reja was mad, not because of a penalty call or a an offside but from this....

Apparently, during the game Reja thought of a substitution to change the game for Lazio. He informed his assistant who made a mistake and subbed Alvaro González instead. When Reja saw the Uruguayan coming out of the pitch he went basaltic! He even pulled him back to re-enter the pitch after it all ended!

  • Kazaan

I hope referees make even more mistakes which go in our favor, because
if you are in that position where mistakes that small are so decisive
you are doing really, really well as a team

I'm glad the referee/linesman made that mistake, because we got 3pts and we didn't do anything wrong, we didn't bribe anyone, there is absolutely no evidence anyone from Inter did anything wrong

It's an anomaly in the system of football rules - those who implement them are not perfect

  • Vinod

Oh, he's been whining about the refereeing for 2 days straight now. I don't think it was all down to his assistant's blunder...

  • Maryam1908

Who hasn't been whining about that ref? Everyone in Italy has and its just pathetic. I mean if they thought he was that bad other teams and their fans must have been pissed at the ref we had at the Napoli game! Where was the outrage then? just saying....

  • dvdlll

In all honesty, the only clear call which should have been given against us was Pazzo's goal (the handball penalty shout was nonsensical, although who would bet against it being given in THAT run of refereeing errors against us).

However the linesman is the one to blame for that, it is his advice that the referee bases his calls on. Also, if it were against us instead, I would definitely be pissed that we conceded from an offside position, but given the circumstances (the assist coming from a header by a defender on the halfway line, and Pazzo being less than half a yard offside), I would probably not complain too much about the mistake, or suspect some sort of conspiracy, as we have been hearing for 2 days now.

  • Kazaan

Great comment, because that is almost exactly how I feel and that is my point>>

it would be dishonest to claim that I'm sad the goal was allowed just because it wasn't according to the rules. Fck, I am glad, we won, and I will also gladly complain when our rivals score after referee's mistake like we did, because:

1st - our rivals have dirty habits (there is nothing to support that we do)
2nd - we didn't benefit from that mistake

Also Pazzo's goal was so good it would really be a shame to disallow it

  • PDubz18

This might make Reja sound like an idiot, but I think he's a boss. Instead of complaining about officiating or things out of your control, he complains about his own fuck-up.

  • SunRiver

    http://www.goal.com/id-ID/news...

I do believe he's one of the top managers in Serie A, but that brain fart was during the game. He clearly has a few points to bring up with the referee but I think his anger was born from that silly mistake.

  • Bubble_Buster

    That's absolutely amazing! LOOOOOOOL

  • that's hilarious hahahahahahaha

  • Vinod

That was a narrow escape. We played like poop and Ranieri knows it, but what he didn't let up was that it was his own fault. Somehow, he expects us to play fluid and organized football with 5 full backs on the field. We rarely looked like we were in control, and got really lucky with Pazzini's goal and Rocchi's 1st half and Klose's 2nd half misses. The penalty shout was full of hooey -- the replay clearly showed Klose barging into Lucio, although Lucio need not have used his hand to prove a point there.

I don't expect us to play magical football, just less scrambling and more intent. I also expected us to suffer without Motta in lineup, and we did, and it was even worse that I had expected. Ranieri sent out a lineup whose mentality brings to mind certain synonyms for female genitalia, and I hope that if we are to catch Udinese he shows a bit more adventure.

  • ajay2

You know, if you forget the last 10mins of the 1st half and the entire second half of the Inter - Napoli match, it serves as a good example of how we can actually play well without Motta in the lineup. If I remember correctly, Obi was playing on the left, Zanetti on the right, Alvarez or Sneijder on the tip and Cambiasso on the bottom. I still think that was our best first half performance of the season despite the horrible refereeing and the many good matches we have had after it. The play was very fluid and Inter completely dominated Napoli up until Obi's red.

I think what I am trying to say is that Obi looks like a very very good replacement when Motta is unavilable. He is fast, he can work on his passing a little but he works his socks off for the full 90 mins and he is young which means he can only get better. Plus, who here disagrees that everytime he steps onto the field we see something good coming from him, whether its during a cameo appearance or as a starter? He genuinely seems to have enough skill on the ball and the pace to pose problems of defenders, if there's one thing I have noticed about him its that his link up play is quite excellent, one-twos and whatnot. I think he is a future Motta in a different mould. He really should be playing more than he is atm, IMO.

  • Vinod

He was very very good 2 games in a row, but he's also shown that he's still quite immature. Remember the row of games he got at the start of the season when everything was going downhill? He showed the most heart and effort back then, but also the least amount of thought on the ball. There were so many instances he took the ball up field, realized he had no clue what to do with it, made a stupid decision and conceded possession. He has time on his side, he will quite possibly turn out to be a very good player for us, but he's definitely not ready to displace any of the starters on our team right now. I personally think Ranieri is doing the right thing by giving him the Coppa games and the occasional appearance in Serie A and CL games.

  • ajay2

Yeah, and I agree totally, he is still developing and the only way he will develop is if he is given a little more time on the pitch. And besides, I am not calling for him to replace Motta or anyone for that matter, rather for him to be the replacement for when players like Motta get injured. I think he has more than enough to do the job for now and he will only get better with that much more exposure. I think Inter realizes this though, they did just purchase his whole card.

I'm sure you would agree that playing him in the Lazio game would have been better than putting Chivu in at LB and moving Yuto up to LM.

  • Vinod

For sure. In the very first post of this thread I was raging about Ranieri starting with all those full backs. Bringing on Obi was definitely the right thing to do, and it showed.

  • Quattro stelle

Agreed, it was pretty ugly.  I have always greatly valued Motta but yesterday his absence truly proved his worth to the squad.  We simply have no one who combines destroyer with pivot (in fact, when healthy I am not sure of any player in the world who has his skill set).  I don't blame Ranieri though for his XI, he was in a bind since there is really no vice-Motta.  I think this game made clear that finding his backup should be a high priority in the transfer market.

  • PDubz18

Poli looks like an up-and-coming vice-Motta. And I think thats exactly why we bought him. Watch Poli's performance against Genoa; he even had good chemistry with Sneijder.

  • Vinod

I don't know if Poli is really a vice-Motta -- one of Motta's best qualities is that he can pass short or long. And by long I mean really long, like the cross field ball from the left wing that lands right on Maicon's foot on the opposite wing. Its that ability, combined with that awareness, that makes Motta such a dangerous player -- one second there's a clusterfuck on the left wing, the next second Maicon is away on the right to bomb in a cross or shot.

We haven't seen very much of Poli, true, but in the 2 games that we've seen I didn't see one long pass from him. He's clearly very good at the give and go, and clearly got the energy to be all over the pitch, but can he really spray a long pass that can open up the opposition. I don't know yet.

  • Kazaan

I agree about his skill set as well, and his importance for the team, but only when he is on the pitch!

I  really, really x100 would love to see injured vs healthy timeline for all our players, during their contracts, i.e. how long were they injured.

I bet Motta is one of the players who were absent the longest, even longer than Wes

Of course, there are players who were healthy all the time and contributed less (1st Muntari, 2nd Chivu and few others) but they aren't considered a first team players like he is

That is why it's better to sell him and immediately either buy someone else or groom intensely those few young CMs we already have

He can get injured at any time

  • Vinod

Even playing just half the games in a season, he's still such a key member of the team, which speaks volumes about his quality. When Motta plays, we're even able to play well without Wes. I personally think he's worth keeping even if he plays only half a season every year.

As for alternatives, really, who's there? I agree with Quattro stelle that there's barely anyone who can do what Motta does. Gareth Barry maybe, but Mancio would cut off his limbs before he gives up Barry. Ledesma from Lazio has the ability, but not the brains -- his horrible decision making was all too clear on Sunday. Unless Wes magnanimously decides to play in defensive midfield, I don't see a way out of this just yet.

  • Kazaan

Your confidence in Motta is way bigger than my doubts in him

I am however concerned that he could leave us when his contract expires without any fee and that all that waiting/paying him to recover will prove to be not so beneficial for Inter

  • Vinod

In fairness, his agent had been talking about how much he likes it here and about how he would love a contract renewal, but is waiting for Inter to make the move. I think the top brass at Inter has the same doubts that you do about his fitness though. If there was no other concrete interest in him, maybe we could have worked out a 'pay-as-you-play' contract, but with PSG breathing down with what I can only imagine will be a bigger paycheck than he's earning here, chances are we won't get so lucky.

  • Elltron3030

it wasn't pretty, but it's always beautiful! chalk up another ugly win!

  • lamb of God

CR is a genius, switching from pure 442 into diamond 4312, then tacticaly switching defense minded after taking the lead into 4411, 3 strategy in a game and picking the right person to improve the game, well, I don't event fucking care with inter-tainment stuff, I see most of goals by Inter set up beautifuly, so it count as entertained us, the fans. From this game, Millito continue scoring, we leapfrog lazio for 4th position, we win 8 consecutive games, and more fans comes to Meazza.

Inter have all eyes in the world with them now,
    The epic continues...

    Forza Inter

  • Drewsef

Not a great match, imo -- several players seemed rather mentally tired, and who can blame them? -- but I'll certainly take it. We're now in 4th, just 3 points behind Udinese for the CL place, 5 points behind Milan, and 6 points behind Juve. 8 wins in a row in all competitions. That's kind of incredible, really.

By the way, have you guys looked at the middle of the league table recently? It's rather nuts. No. 8 Palermo, and No. 14 Catania, are separated by all of 2 points.

  • Just Inter

and do you guys see the gap between no.2 and no.3 in la liga?
    9 points...
what a tight league it is....

  • Drewsef

Haha, that's an excellent point. Also, being in 4th place, we're 6 points off the league leaders -- who are undefeated, by the way. In Spain, the 4th place team is 18 (!) points off the league leaders, who as it happens are not undefeated. I would love for someone to make a case to me why La Liga is worth watching, on the whole.

  • Styles

La Liga is like watching MLS except for 2 teams... bleh..

  • Styles

Why does La Liga get 4 CL spots and Italy only 3?  WHAT A JOKE!@!

  • Because they won the Euros and they take the Europa League seriously. If Italy do well in the Euros and actually win the EL next year, we would skyrocket in the numbers.

  • Styles

Thanks Johonna, i look forward to Italy getting back 4 CL spots.

  • InterMAD

It looked to me like Pazzini was a little off on that goal, but I am not crying too hard considering last week + that 5 week stretch when we were basically screwed out of those games. Karma is a bitch, though I am sorry that bad calls like that happen.

We bought the rest of Obi's contract in exchange for half of Crisetig's and all I can say is that Obi is turning into a HELL of a player. He was all over the place the second half and he gave Lazio fits on that left side. I don't think he stopped running fro the full 45.

  • lamb of God

You must been seeing him against Genoa Mad, he learn with the right man such cucu and pupi, pluss having a great talent, and freshly he just 20 years old, what an investment he is for Moratti

  • Vik

Pazzo was not offside you guys the assist came from inside our half.

  • Vinod

Doesn't matter where the assist came from -- if Pazzini's not in our own half he can be called offside regardless of where the assist came from.

  • SunRiver

Come on people, this can't happen every time. Our defense is cut like cheese so easily.

  • Kazaan

Either Wes for Ricky or Poli for Chivu to improve our build up

  • Kazaan

the way Lucio is playing we'll concede again either way, better put in another attacking option like Wes

  • Kazaan

    Lucio and Chivu suck

  • SunRiver

Pazzo wake up, come on do that thang with the fingers and the eyes!

  • SunRiver

    Or maybe Nagatomo?

  • SunRiver

    Or is it Pazzini?

  • SunRiver

    WES WARMING UP! ALVAREZ OUT?
