Inter v Panathinaikos – The Enemy is Us
By: Johonna | November 26th, 2008
What: Inter V Panathinaikos, CL Matchday 5
When: 8:45pm local time (11:45am pacific; 2:45pm eastern)
Where: San Siro, Milan
How to Watch: Streaming here or here; pay-per-view here.
Group B Standings:
Internazionale . .8
Anorthosis. . . . .5
Panathinaikos. . .4
Werder Bremen. .3
Basically, we have to win this game. Sure, we could probably squeeze through with a draw, but anything less than a win will mean quite a bit of drama for Matchday 6. On paper, this game should be no problem for us. After all, we beat them 2-0 just two months ago (see above) and Inter are just coming off a very important win. According to Mou, though, Saturday’s good result against Juve could be the very thing that brings us down:
“It’s not Panathinaikos I’m afraid of, it’s us. I’m not scared to say that we’re a better team. We come from a different reality to theirs. The Greek league is not as good as Serie A and Inter want to win the Champions League – Panathinaikos do not. But great motivation can work miracles and a lack of motivation can create nightmares.
Our slump started after we played well against Roma. Three days ago we had our best match of the season against Juventus and there is a real risk of going backwards again. That’s football. Experience tells me that we must forget the Juve win. Panathinaikos must be our starting point. If we win we are through as group winners, if we draw we are also through, but we mustn’t forget that if we lose we’re in a lot of trouble.”
Henk ten Crate has also come to Milan for points, and aims to get at least one from Inter. He said:
“We have nothing to lose. If we remain organized we can surprise any team. We respect Inter a lot, but we are not afraid of them. Over 90 minutes, anything can happen. Aside from Inter, who are almost through, it’s a very open group. We have to go to Milan with the strong belief that we can get at least a point and build from there.”
A Little Review
Here is what has happened in Group B to date:
Day 1 — Panathinaikos 0 – 2 Internatzionale; Bremen 0 – 0 Anorthosis
Day 2 — Anorthosis 3 – Panathinaikos; Internazionale 1 – 1 Bremen
Day 3 — Internazionale 1 – 0 Anorthosis; Panathinaikos 2 – 2 Bremen
Day 4 — Anorthosis 3 – 3 Internazionale (@#!*&); Bremen 0 – 3 Panathinaikos
Basically, Bremen has just been hammered, with every single one of their points the result of a draw. Still, if they manage to beat Anorthosis tomorrow, second place is wide open.
THEM
Based on their last league game and scoring records, the squad will probably at least include:
Keeper: Galinovic
Defenders: Gabriel, Simao, Vyntra, Spyropoulos
Midfielders: Tziolis, Gilberto, Karagounis, Nilsson, Ninis, Ivanshitz
Forwards: Salpingidis, Rukavina, Mantzios
Silva Cleyton, Bryce Moon and Sotris Leontiou are all injured and will not play. Right now Pana’s top goal scorers are Salpigidis (5), Ivanschitz (4) and Mantzios (4) and after last weekend, Pana are fourth in the Greek A League. They have won 5 out of 11 games, drawn 4 and lost 3. There are clearly some problems with their defense as they have allowed 10 goals. Lets hope we find a couple of those holes tomorrow.
US
Mourinho has called up 19 players:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi.
Midfielders: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Quaresma.
Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Adriano, Balotelli
Vieira is injured – again. National team duty is the kiss of death for him. Every time he goes, he comes back with some problem. Chivu and Rivas are still out – and probably will be until January. Samuel, while clearly the first choice to start in defense, was still injured at the time Mou submitted his Champions League list so was not included. Hopefully we will be looking at a Materazzi – Cordoba pairing in the center. Poor Nico, I just dont know how he will be able to redeem himself after Anorthosis.
I think the line-up will be very familiar:
Julio Cesar
Maicon, Cordoba, Materazzi, Maxwell
Zanetti, Muntari, Cambiasso
Stankovic
Ibrahimovic, Adriano
But you never know what Mou will pull out of his hat. Balotelli may well start next to Ibra (I think that is what La Gazzetta prophesied). We may also see Quaresma or Mancini on the pitch, and Figo may be a likely substitute for Stankovic given the role he has been playing. It has been so long since I have seen Figo play, though, that I can’t be sure.
Mourinho is afraid that Inter will be too friendly on the pitch tomorrow. He doesn’t want the team to settle for the draw. Basically, we have to take the field tomorrow and own the match. No stupid slip-ups in the back; no missing sitters (ehem, Ibra); and for god’s sake, NO RED CARDS (Marco, Muntari, keep it together). I have no doubt we are the more talented team, but that does not guarantee anything in football. So, tomorrow morning, all you Interiste out there, light a candle for the football gods. It is always nice to have them on our side.
FORZA INTER
A little pre CL press conference, for those that understand Italian

Well didn’t we that hard on ourselves mourinho knew this was gonna happen our players played this game like a friendly one ibra and maicon were dissapointing to say the least
The only positive thing was rikki Quaresma he was toying with those bitches and his trivela always catch the opponents defenders off guards I thought he was gonna start this game I also thought mancini should have started instead of figo anywys I won’t question mourinho

I have to agree. I thought that RQ and Mancini were going to play tonight.
I think that its time for Figo to retire gracefully. I don’t think his defense was that great before Nedved almost crippled him and I think that he’s lost a few steps. He can still pass but he can’t move very well.

sorry, I realize now we are through. I was checking the scores via my cell phone and thought I saw that Anothosis was winning 2-0. My eyes must have been playing tricks on me.
So yes we are through! Woo Hoo! But are you seriously optimistic? I am not.

Wow, so Moratti spends 20million euros+ on firing Mancini and hiring Mourinho, and this is what he gets? Looks exactly like last year. Dominant in the league but shit in Europe.

MAD…this is definitely a conspiracy against inter!!!!!!

Bad performance but we’re through to the last 16 and thats all that matters. Quaresma played well also.
Once again, we’re through with one game to spare and we can concentrated on the league until Feb. It isnt like we were thrashed. They scored from a set piece and we had many more chances.

Yes, we must be shit in Europe.
We are first in the Italian league and we are winning our Champions League Group. We have also qualified for the next round early.
We must be in CRISIS!

I didn’t say that, and it’s not particularly meant as an attack on Inter (as much maybe on Mourinho) as much as an observation. Inter steamrolled Roma and handily defeated Juve, but loses at home to Panathiakos and struggles to draw against Famagusta?

It didn’t/doesn’t surprise me too much to see that we are on cruise control a bit in the Champions League this month.
Our schedule from the last game in October up to next weekend was a hard stretch: Fiorentina, Udinese, Reggina (who were surprisingly tough), Palermo, Juventus and Napoli this weekend.
Add on all the international stuff and it’s clear that we focused on winning Italian League games and not on the two greek teams in the Champions League. No biggie. We got our group stage business done early, unlike Roma that has to win next game to qualify.

Plus, I don’t think we took them very seriously.

We can draw our next game and still progress.
Just remember to worry about your team and it’s performance. Internazionale won’t stand a chance playing this way against stronger opponents. We might have started off worse than a relegation-bound club, but we’re starting to gel at the right time during the season.

“we’re starting to gel at the right time during the season.”
November? Thats the right time to gel? lol Roma better worry about qualifying for Europe next season because they have no chance of winning anything.
Barca, Inter, Chelsea, or Man U will win the CL. Inter are clear favorites for the Scudetto.

I think that the point is still valid. Roma need to do something positive just to move on.
We are already moved on.
I echo Dave on the whole “gel at the right time” thing. I think that the right time to gel was a bit earlier in the season.
And I think that Inter will be fine. One way or another. We are firmly in the Scudetto race. We have qualified for the next round of Champions League. We have insane transfer rumors surrounding us. All the trappings of a good club.
And it’s not even december yet.

I think the best time to hit top form is in the spring, though a fast start is also helpful. I have a feeling that by February or March the players will be more settled with the new system and will hit top form, just in time for a CL run. To win the CL we need to play better football.
The Scudetto is different. We can grind out results with our strength at the back and with Ibra making the difference in attack. That won’t be enough for the CL though. We might need to sign a trequartista in Jan

Dave…on what basis do you make this comment:
“Barca, Inter, Chelsea, or Man U will win the CL. Inter are clear favorites for the Scudetto.”
that is clearly a biased view of inter, a little bit of objectivity would help to understand from which angle you see inter/chelsea to win the CL, when infact both teams are playing average in CL.

The Cl is not won in November HBW. Looking at league and cl form and strength of the respective squads, those are the four favorites.
Once again, ITS ONLY NOVEMBER!

March is the best time to hit your stride imo…
Fuck the Cowboys!

haha fuck who??
Fuck Ju(ve)!!
Cowboys win, cover and go to 8-4. Now, I hope the Giants and Skins do what McDumbass over in Philly thought was not possible!
FYI… May 18 is the best time to hit full stride… on a flooded pitch!

after a couple of days to think about what happened wednesday, my friend and i have cometo the conclusion that this was best for the team. the lose, even though hard to take, brought us back down to earth and showed us that we really and truly arent invincible.
i believe that this will be a turning point in our season. thank god we didnt play like this against napoli. hamsik and lavezzi would have skinned us alive!!!
FORZA INTER!!!

I saw these pictures and thought that it was really weird that it looks colder there than it does here on the bank of the Great Lakes…

Haven’t heard much of Jimmy myself, I have a funny feeling that he’s going to be one of those moving to a new team this January, if he’s this out of favor.
On the other hand, rumors are swirling in Fiorentina that some players, including Pazzini who I always thought had potential, are going to be sold.
Here’s another completely random thought… was it me or did we seem to be feeling the presence of Stankovic on wednesday. I thought that his intensity was pretty key against Juve, the same intensity that coincidentally wasn’t present when he wasn’t in the lineup. Something to think about, I guess.

There’s more than an inch of snow on the ground in central Milano; it’s quite unusual for November.
