Inter v Roma: Dipende da Noi

By: Johonna | November 7th, 2009

crespo-roma-goal2
Just as it should, this game gets top billing this weekend. Say what you will about Roma, for some reason they always bring it when they travel to Milan to play Inter. It doesn’t really seem to matter their form or where they sit in the table, when they come to the San Siro, they always pull out all the stops. Both teams won their last Siere A games and various UEFA trophy competition type games so both will be raring to go.

What: Inter v Roma, Matchday 12
Where: San Siro, Milan
When: Sunday, November 8th, 8:45 local time (11:45 pacific, 2:45 eastern)
How to Watch: Live on FSC (hooray) or find a stream (MyP2P, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).

For the last couple of years, this tie has ended in draws. Last year’s 3-all was epic. Twice, Inter went down 2 goals, and, in the end, we managed to claw our way back. I tell you, a draw never felt so much like a win. Well, that is except the for the same tie two years ago. That game saw our fearless captain snatch a point with a rare but wonderful goal that helped seal our scudetto.

Last year’s game:

And the year before:

As you can see, it is always a heart-stopping nail-biter. In fact, we haven’t really put one over on Roma at the San Siro in the Serie A since a 2-0 win in 2005 (both goals were from Mihajlovic). Overall, though, Inter have a pretty decent home record against Roma: of the 78 Serie A games, Inter have won 42, drawn 24, and only lost 12. Not bad.

Another bit of interest is all the business the two clubs have done over the years. Moratti and Sensi were friends, and players have moved between Inter and Roma without much fuss. Right now, our good friend Nico Burdisso is on loan to the Giallorossi (and they seem to like him just fine), while Pizarro also was a Nerrazzuri not all that long ago. Andreolli is an Inter youth product, and until last year, was co-owned by the clubs*. In our ranks, Chivu and Mancini came directly from i Lupi, while Samuel took a brief detour to Real Madrid before finding his way from Rome to Milan. In other words, we are almost family. Almost.

*Rumor is that Andreolli will come back to Inter this winter in exchange for Burdisso. Go figure.

THEM

Our four-legged friends have not gotten off to the best of starts this season – between money woes and the never ending injuries, they haven’t had a whole lot to work with. Still, they have won their last two games and may just be starting to figure out what Ranieri wants from them. Unfortunately, they have dug themselves into a bit of a hole and have a lot of work to do if they want to see the sun again.

Roma sit at 14 points (exactly half Inter’s points), and have lost more games than they have won. They dont seem to have any trouble scoring goals – Roma’s 18 goals puts them in the top four offensively – but have real difficulty stopping the other team from scoring. With 19 goals conceded, they have the second worst defensive record in the league (Genoa is the worst with 20). Clearly, they have strengths to respect and weaknesses to exploit.

Right now, probably their greatest weakness is their medical staff. For some reason, Roma always seem to have half their starters out with some injury of another. Today is no different: Totti, Doni, Juan, and Burdisso are all out. Taddei will also be sitting one this out due to suspension. It could be (and has been) worse, though. At least today when I look at their projected line-up I know who everyone is. They have not had to dip into their youth team for this match.

pre roma
Happy is good, focused is better.

US

We are finally starting to clear out our injury ward – and none too soon, either. Everyone is fit (although Eto’o is not quite 100%) and we have no suspensions. There has been some talk of a bit of a rotation squad, and for the first time in a couple years that doesn’t immediately make my stomach start to churn. It sure is nice to have options! Cambiasso may start from the bench as he is still nursing his knee. He has finally won his first call-up to the Argentine National team and everyone wants him to do well and earn a returning role. Every player worth his boots is dreaming of the World Cup – I am sure Cuchu is no different.

Mourinho has called-up 19 players:
Portieri: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni;
Difensori: Cordoba, Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Samuel, Chivu;
Centrocampisti: Stankovic, Thiago Motta, Sneijder, Muntari, Vieira, Cambiasso, Mancini;
Attaccanti: Eto’o, Milito, Balotelli.

Mourinho was all humble and wary during his press conference today. He didn’t drop any hints about line-ups or formations or anything.

I repeat what I said before the last two games: if I have no idea how to play my opponent, it doesn’t make life easy. It is not easy to prepare a game where no one knows how to play the adversary: Claudio Ranieri is a coach who usually uses a 4-4-2, but in these days has spoken of the possibility to deploy the diamond in midfield and I also thought that he uses the 4-4-1-1. I’m thinking and working hard in this sense, then I will not say which team I will play with now. There are no injured players at this time, I believe that it is not news to those who are part of our environment, Rui Faria is a phenomenon, however, we are all working well to build the best team possible to meet Roma, a team that right now does not find the justice of its quality in its current position in the standings.

The 14-point difference between Inter and Roma are not a true testament of the situation of these two teams: we have done very well since the beginning of the season, they have had some problems and lost some points unnecessarily, but what counts in a team is the quality and level of quality, I always said that I like Roma and there are some Roma players I like very much. For these reasons, I see the game tomorrow night as a big game, a game between two teams fighting for the Scudetto. They are quite far behind, it’s true, but the reality of the situation is that they too are a team that can fight for the Scudetto.

Mourinho is also worried about the team’s mentality after the euphoria of the win in Kiev.

Character is very important and this team has already shown theirs many times, but it is also character to win and stay calm after an important win. History is full of bad games after a great battle and that of Inter against Dynamo was truly a great match on every level: psychologically, physically, tactically and the level of risk. … Right now, for for me it is … important that players understand that we have not done anything, or at least, that we have done something that has an ephemeral significance. We need to stay calm, the race tomorrow will be served to the team who understands that there is a need to begin every future match with the same mentality and the same concentration. This is the mentality of the big teams, teams that never tire of doing good to win, who do not need to recover psychologically and physically after a great game. A great team is always prepared to play a great match after great match, this is the mentality that I want.

Tomorrow I dont want to have a disappointment and a team that takes the field playing with the victory of Kiev in its pocket. I do not want to have in our pocket the victory won in the Champions League, that is the past. The only difference is that we are in a better position and, now, instead of the press writing that Inter has not won in 7 games they will write that inter has not lost in 4, but there is nothing more.

Then, when asked if Mourinho was confident of winning tomorrow, he said no and that “it depends on us.

And really, what more can be said? More than anything, tomorrow “Dipende da noi“.

We have a great squad who are determined and used to playing under this sort of pressure. We have the tranquility of knowing that no matter how terribly Juventus beats Atalanta, we will still be top of the table. Couple that with the drive for success and I think we have a pretty good shot of coming out of this with three points. That is, if we can concentrate on the task at hand. In many ways, a win is far more important for Roma than it is for Inter and that is a dangerous situation. I dont think that Roma has it in them to beat us, but I think we can most certainly beat ourselves. Inter must be focused and hungry – anything less just will not do.

    Mourinho is pissed

Did you expect him to not be? I’m surprised he didn’t explode any more, actually. Maybe he will inside the locker room. If a team I was in charge of played the way we did today, I would’ve gone ballistic on them. But his comments about our teams were exactly right: “One wanted to win but didn’t do enough to succeed. Another didn’t want to win and showed it didn’t want to.”

That second half team has enough quality to one-up Barcelona, and yet they didn’t even bother trying after the first 5 minutes.

Like Kabir, I’m surprised Mourinho chose to go off so much on Balotelli, considering he’s been the one who’s pulled us out of dog poo all season long. But again, we can’t really fault anything he’s said, it was all spot on. But when players like Cuchu, Deki and Sneijder don’t seem to be trying enough, is it fair to expect Balotelli to?

Balotelli doesn’t get a pass on trying just because he is young. No one gets a pass – which I think is what Mou was saying.

Interesting the bit about Vieira – that he was bad because the rest of the team did not use him properly. I will have to take Mou’s word for it.

Trolling is going to love my review of this game if he thinks those words about De Rossi were harsh…

I have no idea what lesson I am supposed to learn. Other than I was lucky when my team fond me I don’t have to be like him/her/it.

I think that these types of games are going to happen when we are on the eve of a big break and we just had a hellish two weeks or so where we were playing every 3 or 4 days.

There’s a study that shows the same thing happens in a school. If you are a teacher and you want your students to fail a test, plan it on the last day of classes before a big school break.

Then again, its just not possible to win every game. Although as I type these words I am watching La Domenica Sportiva and I am watching Andreolli shove Milito on the ground in one of the big video magnifying glasses they use seconds before a cross comes in to ensure that he can’t use it…

For the first time i see Roma playing like this i was excpecting ROMA to play a more open game but they didnt after they scored they played 9 man defence just like Inter did with Barca on the second half embarrasing for ROMA they are going to miss SPALLETI big time,Roma played defence INTER were not enough agressive they waited until Sneijder came in if we had 10 minutes more we would have scored. Why can’t INTER be more agressive without Sneijder on the field?! I dont want INTER to play like this without Sneijder on the pitch because they are gonna depend on him every time just like they did with Ibra. I think Inter’s midfield needs some more offensive minded players that can hold the ball and play it on the ground.I’m dissapointed with the draw but i know this before the game started. I have never seen the referee call so many soft fouls on a single game! If you really looked at the referee’s face he looked like he was not sure of his call every time he blew his whistle.
    Forza Inter.

MAD, that may be true but this generally applies to average schools but is insignificant at top performing schools. Top performers are less affected by what go on around them as they’re almost always mentally and emotionally focussed, it’s like part of their DNA. Inter are supposedly champion material….correct me if I’m wrong. In any case, Roma didn’t just roll over.

If we plated the whole match with our starting line-up from the second half, we would have won.

Vieira is not good enough to ever play a single minute for Inter and Stankovic is insufficient at the trequarista role – talk done.

Mou was trying to rotate – rotation helps stave off injury. A champion team should have more than 11 players who can win a game. If we can’t rotate, we are screwed (I think that might be a pun).

And yes, I like Balotelli quite a bit. He is just one more in a long line of maddeningly talented Inter strikers. They tease you with flashes of brilliance then stun you with indifference or just mundane play. If we lived through and loved Recoba and Adriano, Balotelli is a walk in the park.

Also, what is the take on Andreolli? Clearly the club didn’t think he showed enough promise to keep him around the first time (for those that dont know, half his ticket was initially part of the Chivu deal). Now there are lots of rumors saying that he will come back to Milan this winter as part of a deal for Burdisso.

Question is, do we want him back?

Inter needs more skillful players up front.

Andreolli showed bags of promise initially. But injuries have kept him out for a long long time, and we weren’t patient enough to see him through those.

He was rock solid at the U-21 Euros. But since then, he’s been blowing hot and cold. Occasionally, he puts in brilliant tackles, and occasionally he commits Burdisso-esque blunders. I wouldn’t mind having him back, but with Lucio, Samuel, Cordoba, Chivu and Materazzi ahead of him in the pecking order, such a move would pretty much ruin these next few years for him, when he should be gaining important experience. If we were to bring him back, we’d need to send him out on loan again until he can at least become a third choice player for us, and I don’t know if he will wait for us that long.

Vinod I love to see B45 on every game but the only thing that i cant stand from him is he doesnt fight to get the ball back after he looses he acts like he is finished after loosing the ball i hate that and i know Mourinho hates that part of him too World class players that are over 30 dont do that and he is only 19!!

As for DeRossi’s injury, Materazzi was injured in exactly the same way last season during a CL game against Werder Bremen. I dont remember anyone saying that Bremen were bullies then. This is an injury that happens in football. As I recall, the ref didn’t even call a foul when Marco got hit in the CL game.

We are the only bullies in Serie A. When Roma does it to us, it’s showing spunkyness.

That’s what I don’t like about B45 too. Most times when he’s on the pitch, he’s only pulling half his weight. I’m still not convinced that all of his dazzling prowess as a forward – if and when he shows up – is enough to outweigh his deficiencies as a striker. We may be better off with another striker who does the same (there’re many out there) and who’d put in 100% every game, like fighting for the ball from one end to the other. I’m sure Mourinho would have frozen him to kingdom come if he isn’t so “celebrated” by the public and media in Italy. He being an asset is cancelled out by he being a liability. For all the patience shown and mollycoddling, he might still turn out to be another Adriano who win 2 matches with 2 mesmerizing goals but disappear in the next 20.

Considering how much I hate De Rossi, I’m quite glad Vieira broke his face. It was worth the two dropped points. Quite fitting for how much he has flapped his trap over recent years, making absurd & unfounded accusations.

I would have sacrificed to the other point to have Materazzi come off the bench and scissor Menez so bad that the his legs would have snapped at the shin and thigh.

They can’t win with “Champagne” Football. They don’t know how to beat a team who played like utter shit & was ripe for the taking, they failed to to successfully defend with 9 men the ball.

Then they still go to media and cray about something.

The sooner AS Roma f***s off, the better! Congrats on the point though. Inter deserved nothing from this match.

From all the reviews I read, I’m kinda glad that I was exhausted and couldn’t stay up tp watch it!
It doesn’t seem anything spectacular went on, in fact it was quite the opposite, it seems mourihno had
Every right to be this pissed.Although I would have preffered the win, can’t say I am suprised cause I was half expecting
    The draw.
Balotelli raising questions again? Not suprised. Although there is no doubt that this guy is talented, I am one of those skeptics
That wonder if he really is worth the trouble. Unless he acts more maturely and becomes more of a team player, I will remain unimpressed with him…
Does anyone know why Santon was left of the list? Its just so weird that he is struggling more this year than he did last! Now
    Him I expected more of!

Links of the highlights and goals would be highly appreciated. :)

about as classy Roma after any short coming or defeat?

As classy as Mexes or De Rossi or Totti or Sensi or Spaletti or most of the Roma organization flat out calling Inter cheaters when Roma failed to win the Scudetto on their own merit all while Inter was crippled with Injury since January of that season?

    As classy Menez yesterday?

As Classy as Totti spitting on Poulsen or hitting coaches?

Excuse me if I don’t feel so bad for De Rossi or for having wished someone put Menez out of his misery yesterday.
