Inter v Roma: Here We Go Again
By: Johonna | February 28th, 2009
What: Inter v Roma
When: Sunday, March 1, 8:30pm CET (11:30am pacific, 2:30pm eastern)
Where: San Siro, Milan
How to Watch: “Live” on Fox Soccer Channel or find a stream (MyP2P, Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net)
Barring any UCL ties that may come up, this game will be the last meeting between Inter and Roma for the season. I will admit, I am a little nostalgic – this season has just flown by. It seems like just yesterday we were sweating over the Supercoppa d’Italia. Sigh… good times, good times…
Inter has already beaten Roma three times this season, including twice in Milan, but Roma are a tricky team and they can pull rabbits out of hats you didn’t even know they had. Last year was a draw, but it came with a very important point for Inter. That, and a moment of ecstatic joy when Zanetti fired home the equalizer. It was one of those moments when you leap off the couch and dance around the room shouting at the top of your lungs. Hopefully, this year will not require such heroics.
Here is that game:
THEM
If there is one team that is well represented on The Offside, it is Roma. As such, I wont devote much space to them here. Besides, with their ever-changing injury list, who knows who will actually be fit come Sunday. Whoever it is, I am sure they will pushing for a win to wash the bitter taste of Arsenal out of their psyches. They could probably use the points as well.
Right now, La Gazzetta lists Aqualini, Cassetti, Juan, and Perrotta as “not available.” By Sunday, who knows.
US
Mourinho has called up 19 players:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Maxwell, Maicon, Burdisso, Materazzi, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini.
Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Adriano, Balotelli.

Although Vieira is on the bench, it seems he is not quite match fit so will not start. Mou is hoping there will be an opportunity to get Patrick into the action, though, because we need the depth he offers in midfield.
At the back, Samuel is injured, and, since he is also training alone, Chivu is either being rested or has picked up some sort of knock. Everyone else has been left off the list for “technical reasons.”
Formation wise, Mou is being very cagey. Besides saying that Vieira will not start, he gave nothing away. I think he would like to rest some of the midfield, but we really dont have the depth. As Mou said today:
“…when I think of resting Cambiasso or Zanetti I can no longer play with a 4-4-2 because I dont have other players who can replace them playing in the same position and with the same quality.”
So there you go. We have what we have and will just have to make the best of it.
Statistically speaking, we usually win this fixture: out of 77 games played, Inter has won 42, drawn 23 and lost only 12. Inter has scored 145 goals and only allowed 74. Unfortunately, the Calcio Gods pay no attention to statistics or any sort of math – they are fickle and beyond the ken of mortals. Still, I find numbers comforting, in a pattern-seeking kind of way.
One thing I think we will see are some goals. Historically, this game has them – there have only been eleven scoreless draws since 1927. Plus, after the scuffed shots against Man United, I suspect there has been lots of shooting practice this last week. Everyone will be itching to show they can actually put one in the back of the net (please please please).

Maicon showing Adriano where the ball is supposed to go.
This time last year, we had 61 points, 9 more than second place Roma and we all know how that turned out: 45 minutes of nail-biting agony on the last day of the championship. I would like to sew this one up 2007 style. In order to do that, we must walk into the San Siro and take Roma down. Simple as that.
FORZA INTER
And here is a little video to remind us all to love Julio Cesar ♥ He just makes me all kinds of happy.

Alessandro, I cant very well get on Daniele about making personal attacks without calling you on that comment to Ben.
First offense warning. No personal attacks. Keep it football related.
Attack the opinion or the statement, not the person.

MAD, it’s a well known fact that Inter plays like its namesake, MERDA, yet still wins, especially without Ibrahimovic

balotelli is very, very, very immature. not even for the dive, but for sticking his tongue out like an animal. you should be ashamed of this player. you have an excellent coach who is smart enough to bench this bitch, obviously this kid is a hassle to inter as well.
panucci doesn’t get a pass from roma fans, balotelli shouldn’t be given a pass from you all.Posted from

I absolutely agree, Jonkon. Balotelli is a cocky little shit. It would be one thing if he had the chops to back it up, but he doesn’t. Mario should keep his head down and do his job. He really needs to take a page from Crespo’s book: buckle down, work hard, do your best when called up.
Unfortunately, Mario is all 18 of his years. Sometimes 18-year-old boys don’t show the best judgment.

Hey if Inter dont want Balotelli Id be happy for Milan to take him, tongue wagging and all

Pat, he could never play for Milan. He doesn’t meet any of the critia:
1) be Brazilian
or
2) be oldMaybe, say, in 15 years he will be ready for Milan

Hello, let me start by saying I’m a roma supporter. I was just wondering if any inter fans think that there is something going on between Inter management and the referees in Serie A?
If you think there is not, would you agree that Inter get ALOT of favorable calls?
I personally am unsure about the first one. I do, however, think that Inter get an unusually large amount of calls that go their way. I am still not sure whether this is truly the refs’ incompetence, or some kind of unconscious advantage they give inter because they are a large team that “should” win, or if they truly are being paid by inter management.
What are all of your thoughts on the issue?
Incredible spectacle tonight, by the way, I’ve spoken with some neutrals who said it was game of the year.
Ciao

Balo is definitely cocky but he backed it up today. Im doing a complete 180 on this guy. A couple days ago I said I wouldnt care if he left. Now I see why we have to put up with his shit
Adri should study Balo’s first goal and see if he can remember how to finish. And how many 18 year olds can take a pen that cooly? He was pure class in the second half

Inter’s special treatment by the refs is a fact.
The hand ball in the Milan derby, and now this ridiculous dive in the Roma match are just two examples of an obvious lack of justice.
Andriano is really over-rated and should have had a match ban for his (hand) goal celebration.
Ibra and Cesar are the some of the best players in the world, but watch, they won’t be able to beat Man U because the refs won’t be in their pocket, just like the last few years. Proof.

brento, I am personally paying the refs to favor Inter. Dont bother following the league anymore because the Scudetto has already been paid for.
Ive also made sure that Roma gets no calls and dont qualify for the Champions League. I also paid Roma’s physios to keep Totti and Aquilani injured.
I hope this clears up any misunderstandings

You’re right Johnny. Your facts are undeniable. Beyond reproach. With this amount of evidence you should hire a lawyer and take this to court. You’ll be a hero! You’re definitely not a whiner. You’re definitely not bitter. You’re not a sore loser

Posted from Australia”You remember it right. It just isn’t an example of handling as a violation of one of the laws of football. In this case, where Panucchi put his arm into the path of the ball it wold have been. But I don’t think that if I was a ref I would have called it.
I would have called the ‘bow to the melon though.

Posted from Canada”It’s not that well known.
I don’t know it.
No one I know, knows it.
Besides, I always thought that Milan, Juve and Roma’s namesake was merda.
That’s what I always call them.

I don’t know if it’s just me being optimistic or oblivious of the situation but I saw a Inter side with great endurance today. Balotelli though immature showed brilliance today in finishing terms, his finish from adri’s pass was great.
ANd yeah, if only Ibra, Adri and stanki got back into shooting out of the box(on target) Life will be great for we inter fan’s. There was a clear chance at goal where Stanki shot straight at the goalie today(disappointing). I remember Stankovic scoring a great volley against Roma in the first leg..what happened to that Stanki???CAN anyone teach Adri to move the ball to the right sometimes??? i’m pretty sure this would deceive any defender cos they all KNOW he takes the ball to his left no matter the situation! its just a matter of getting the timing right!
Is it me or should Figo be a reliable first 11 choice for the midfield? We all know he crosses WAY better than Maicon. and if we had players like Crespo, Ibra and Adri up front to finish Aerial balls. I don’t see any team in our path!!!
P.S. Is there a reason Ibra wasn’t played today considering this was a must win game?

Quadri, Ibra (like Totti) failed a late fitness test. He had a twinge in his thigh (whatever that means) so was left out.
I dont think Figo has the legs for a full 90 but I do think he should be used more in rotation. Players are getting tired, and, are making mistakes. Stankovic is tired – IMO.
Brento – Just like you think Inter are getting all the calls, I think they are not. In fact, I bet that if we watched the game together, for every time you say that Inter benefited from a call, I could find a time when either Roma got a call I thought they shouldn’t have or the ref missed something. It is all about perspective.
Because we are fans, we cannot be impartial. Also, if you already have a formed opinion, you are more likely to see things that support that opinion than dont.
Palermo probably should have gotten a penalty today – they did not. Does that mean that someone is cheating? Nope.
Milan probably should have picked up about 3 more yellows than they did, and maybe should have had Pirlo sent off. They didn’t. Does that mean someone was cheating? Nope.
Really, you all just need to get a grip and take the blinders off.

Quadri, you make a lot of good points.
Stankovic has been disappointing the last couple games. The word is Balo was subject to racist insults the entire game so I dont blame him for “silencing” the crowd. He was absolutely brilliant though.
I wouldn’t mind Figo coming in for Muntari and playing on the right and Zanetti switching to the left. That may give us the technical quality we so obviously lack in midfield.
Ibra probably picked up a knock or something. He trained by himself on Friday or Thursday. Mou probably wants him fresh for Man U

J, sad but true on the criteria front.
MAD, If a Milan player had have scored a goal like Adriano and won or drawn it would have gone down on your infamous “points other teams got and didnt deserve” list.
You know it was dodgy and based on precident from other refereeing decisions this season, should have been handball
