Inter’s “Golden” Boy Rakes in the Cash and Other News
By: Johonna | June 1st, 2008
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has renewed his contract with Inter Milan for another 5 years. Yep, he is ours until 2013, but at what price? Well, it turns out at a HUGE price. On his last contract, he was making €6 million per season. Starting next season, he will be netting €11 million, with a bump up to €12 million the year after. Who in the real world gets to double their salary?
To put this in perspective, Kaka makes €9 million a season and Christian Ronaldo makes €8 million. This contract makes Ibrahimovic the highest paid player in the Serie A. To help us understand what this means in real terms, Goal.com has broken it down for us: if Zlatan stays to collect the whole €12m, he will be making €231,000 a week – at today’s exchange rate, that is $359,300.56! The rumor is that Barcelona was ready to offer him €10 million so Moratti had to pony up or watch him walk. I hope he is worth it. No wonder Moratti is having to drag Mancio through the courts – he needs every cent he has for Swedes! Now, Ibra better live up to all that potential we are always hearing about. Oh, and no injuries at Euros!
What does this mean for next years squad?
There are rumors that Moratti has given Mourinho a €120 Million budget to build a team that can take the Champions League next season. That sure seems like a lot of cash. I dont expect we will see a complete overhaul of the squad, but the addition of a few key players. Moratti says:
Next season we will base everything around the team we have at our disposal so we will be relying on Ibrahimovic, Zanetti and Cambiasso. We will not revolutionize the side as we have plenty of up-and-coming players like Balotelli in our team.

Speculation is that Moratti will officially name Mourinho as Inter’s new coach at a press conference on Tuesday in Lisbon. This would be very, very good news. Without settling the coaching issue, we cannot move forward in the transfer market. Compared to Juve and Milan, we are falling woefully behind (though at least we dont get a frowny face like Roma).
On the up side, Moratti is finally feeling like a human towards Mancini. He says:
Humanly I was very sorry to have to explain the decision to him. I realise that this is the time when we seem all bad. When you decide a separation, especially after a period in which there has been a strong passion, the worst days are always first. I know how important Mancini is to Inter and I have not forgotten what he did with us, especially in the last two years. It was good and I told him, as so good that we won a beautiful Scudetto.
Apparently the dispute will go to tribunal with a €12 Million payout. – I hope we can settle this quickly and get down to business.
For a very amusing take on what Jose Mourinho may experience as Inter’s coach, see Gabriele Marcotti’s column in The Times Online. I think he makes some valid points – check it out. I would post the whole thing here, but that seems tacky.
Inter players in Seattle!
![]()
Yesterday, the national team of Brazil played Canada at our very own Qwest Field – the current home of the Seahawks and the new home of the Seattle Sounders FC. With the team were three of our players: Julio Cesar, Maicon, and Adriano. Other Serie A players with the squad were Pato and Doni. Pato saw about 10 minutes of play; Doni warmed the bench. Amongst the scantly clad Brazilian girls in my area, Pato was the clear favorite.
I had front row seats (literally) so was about 20 feet from Maicon for the whole first half. I apologize for the crappy photos, but the game was distracting me. Adriano picked up about 15 minutes of play, and, as you can see, he is quite fit. He played his time pretty well, and I was pulling for him to score. He had a couple nice tries and one particularly cheeky shot that was only about a foot from scoring.
It was nice to see that mine was not the only Inter jersey in the crowd; I think I spotted about 4 others. Also, Materazzi (the name on the jersey) drew mostly positive reactions. Frankly, I was surprised anyone even knew who he was. There was only one guy who did not like him – from what I could tell, he was a France supporter and was still bitter about that whole Zidane thing. Still, I am glad to know that I am not totally alone out here in the wild wild west. At least 4 other people like Inter enough to spend money on a jersey and be seen in it in public.

Johanna,
Keep up the good work.
Moratti is definitely enjoying the rise in oil prices. I’m very conflicted about the names being thrown around as prospects. Mainly I would love to see the young talents (Balotelli and Bolzoni) get a bigger chance at Inter. Of the Chelsea players if i could choose, and i can’t, i’d only take Essien. I personally think Lampard will fail in italy, but you never know. Queresma would be a great pick up, but really expensive, as with Eto’o.
What happened to our interest in Aquilani? He would be the best pick up, and seeing him and Cambiasso in the same midfield would be a dream. Plus we need a defender thats under 30 to add to the rotation.Posted from

Well, at least the news got the Tuesday right for the press conference – of course it is at Appiano Gentile and not Lisbon. =0)
Whew, what a relief! Now, lets go spend some of that CASH!

Oh, and Mohi, Aquilani has joined the cult that is Roma. He says he wants to stay at Roma, but they may need the cash they can generate from him. Who knows. Whatever it is, I doubt he would come to Inter. I dont think he has renewed his contract, though…..

The Zlatan deal was done earlier this year. All the terms and the length of the contract were complete. It only required a couple of John Henry’s to make it official. I am happy Zlatan will remain with the team. I think he will do well under Jose’s wing.
I don’t think the Club had to inform Mourinho that they were going to do that, as Marcotti put it. It was something that was already done.
Good article by Marcotti, exaggerated, but good. If you haven’t read the book he did with Ginaluca Vialli, THE ITALIAN JOB, try and do so. Awesome book!
So now we move forward and start to try and land some transfer targets. Inter needs to focus on the defense and midfield. I really think we only need one more striker and it does not need to be Drogba or Eto’o. I would hope that we could land some good Italian talent. I am not completely sold that Aquilani is staying at Roma for sure. I would hope that we make a puch to get him. I’d also want Rosina, Quaresma, Maggio, Aquafresca and sure, bring Deco on board too. There is quite a bit we could drop as well. I don’t think much will be done, though, until the Euro’s have finished.
Mourinho has all of my trust. It was sad to see Mancini go and his contributions to the club will never be forgotten but the club was not going to get any better under his direction. I believe Mourinho has the tools to make this team stronger. I think he can get us far in Europe and keep as one of the front runners for the Scudetto. Hopefully he could keep up his impressive record, as a 1st team manager, with Inter.
Forza Inter!! And to us this Team truly is La Beneamata!! Dai Mourinho!! Dai Ragazzi!!

I read the The Italian Job last summer, but I think I will reread it a little more carefully.
I am definitely feeling positive. Of course, now come all the “play me or I’ll leave” demands that always come with a new coach. I hope Jose can calm the player’s fears.
Also, he needs a new nickname. The Special One just doesnt do it for me. Lo Speciale… Nope.Posted from

It’s a bit interesting. None of the papers here are translating the nickname; they are just going with “il Special One”.
Paolillo (the Inter CEO/managing director, who is nowhere near as powerful as his title) was quoted today as saying that he expects that there will be relatively few new signings, “but that they will be good ones”, and went out of his way to note that the club will be active on both the Italian and international markets.
Paolo’s list is intriguing. Inter still have half of Aquafresca’s registration, but I don’t see him playing regularly given the current glut of forwards. That said, the club has always been wary of letting him go completely.

Just read the whole Jose interview…can’t wait to see how he works with the boys!! This summer with Euro and transfers is going to be funfunfun…

Mo reiterated during his entrance presser that he is not looking to add too many new players just three or four to get the squad up to strength. I see this as a really smart move. With (almost) everyone’s job nominally secure, the team can focus on other things like learning Mo’s style of play.
I hope that those we do buy, are SMART buys, if you know what I mean… useful and relatively cheap (for a player of a certain standard, of course…)

Actually, he said “only two or three”.
My favourite quote was “I’m not “special”, but I’m not a prick, either”.

Any of you thought about the “special” element Mourinho will add to the Derby d’Italia?

Johanna I have to say you’re writing a great blog. But onto the important stuff, I just read that the Super Coppa will be in the US! Now Im probably never going to get a better chance to see my beloved Inter than now so I was wondering if you have any ideas on how I could try to some how get them to come to Washington DC? I know it sounds insane but I would love for them to come here or at least Philly…I would drive all the way there to see them

i think i will be making the trip from trinidad to philly this summer. anyone interest in getting together to go to the game?

I dont know about Philly, but there is some talk about the next Italian Super Cup game (Inter v Roma) being in New York. That is pretty close – at least a lot closer than Milan. The game would probably be in August (right now it is scheduled for August 24).

and Alessio, I can only hope it is an enormous can of KICK ASS! =0)
But that is what every teams wants to bring to Juve games. I know last season the big rivalry was with Roma, but for me it will always be Juve (and a little AC Milan on the side).
I hope with every fiber of my soul that the special thing that Mourinho brings next season is that we finally get to crush Juve!
A girl can dream.

Proudest moment of this year for us, remaining undefeated (in the league) against every big team.
And I hope to every fiber of my soul that Claudio Ranieri gets the ultimate revenge by beating Mourinho to the title!

I can’t handle losses to Juventus or Milan. It takes me a while to get over them
I really hope we do the double over Juventus next season and start chipping away at their advantage of wins over us. I HATE THEM!!
With all the changes and signings going on, it looks like there is going to be some serious battling going on in the table. Should be one heck of a Serie A season. I already can’t wait for it!

Oh god Paolo, you don’t know how fantastic your rant makes me feel.
But I agree, a stronger Milan, Juve, hell, even Napoli and Fiorentina….it’ll probably be the best season in a long time.

you guys battle it out and Roma sneaks into 1st place!!!! muwhahahaha…
/fat chance based on our mercato so far but a good a plan gotta admit, no/

Dennis, I guess you are a little a head of me:
“This summer’s Italian Super Cup will be played in the USA, Lega Calcio chief Antonio Matarrese has revealed.‘The Super Cup could be played in Philadelphia because we have received an offer from there as well as New York,’ Matarrese said.”
