Lecce 1 – Inter 0; Missing Ibra and Eto’o

The time between now and then, I spent grousing in my head why our team seems to have lost the hunger for winning. I really spent a lot of thought and compared us to Barca, where they just don’t ever seem to lose that “eye of the tiger” – for those ‘80s children.

I mean, it can’t be the talent, because looking at Lecce and Inter on paper and Inter should never lose this game.

Maybe it is the talent, though. Games take their toll and trying to exert all the more energy to make up the past mistake of earlier this season when the team imploded. Also take into account the very tough games that surrounded this game – it was last Wednesday we tussled with Napoli and Champions League games are right around the corner. So our best players are stretched very thin… but even our best players aren’t exactly game changing superstars. We sold Ibra, Eto’o and even Mario who made a large contribution for us in the limited time that he played with Inter.

And having an Ibra or an Eto’o really made this team a little different in its construction than other teams. We could get away with a massively defensive midfield because it never had to be a creative element – Ibra and Eto’o were good enough that they could create on their own. They were in essence their own creative element. And if I had to say that we are missing something important it’s this: we aren’t passing the ball well enough. Too many easy turnovers and too many missed final passes.

But times have changed; Milito and Pazzini are completely different animals. Maybe it’s not that we aren’t talented enough, it’s that we now have the wrong talent to support the team . Maybe we are at the point where putting Cambiasso and Zanetti in the midfield is the exact wrong idea. I don’t even think that Zanetti had a bad game on Sunday, considering what his job is, it’s that he wasn’t the right kind of player we needed. What we need is more midfielders who can pass and run, not just run and destroy. But this makes Poli’s exclusion more puzzling to me, personally.

This might explain a lot about what Branca is doing, maybe. He’s been going to Brazil and looking for highly technical, good passing midfield type players.

Okay onward though this mess.

Goalkeeper
Position Score: 6.5

I don’t blame Julio for the goals and really he performed pretty well considering the big gaps in action for him. He was called into action far too much in my opinion. After the team was burned once from the speedy Lecce forwards he helped out the defense by patrolling further up in his box.

Defense
Position Score: 6.0

I liked Nagatomo and I thought Maicon was at least decent, if a little la-dee-dah. Lucio had his problems at times but Samuel was decent, if exposed a bit from the speedy Lecce forwards. To be honest, I was expecting Ranocchia in this game, even though he played on Wednesday.

Midfield
Position Score: 4.5

What we needed was creativity and what we needed was some scoring ideas. Cosmi plays us the same way every time – clog the middle of his area, flood the middle of the midfield and push some wide guys up to keep Maicon back.

In the first half we kept trying to hammer the ball up through the middle through Wes, which worked rarely since this is exactly what Cosmi was planning against. When we changed back to 442-ish in the second half – which was why Sneijder came off, by the way – we seemed to have more success going forward because it loosed things up in the middle.

But we got unlucky. But we didn’t really create as much as we should have against a small team. But we were generally very good at destroying their attempts to go forward. We were good enough at breaking up their play, but we just couldn’t do anything with the ball once we got it.

Obi was the only midfielder that really pushed the ball up in the 3 man midfield even if he made one mistake that a couple of passes later led to the goal – although Lucio and the team’s inability to score shares some blame on this one. Cambiasso did his job roaming and intercepting and Javier did his positional best. But it wasn’t what we needed. In retrospect, I would like to see the game played over with Poli in for Javier with Cambiasso deep in the middle and Obi and Naga pushing up on the left. I think that would have worked out better for us.

Sneijder was largely nonexistent really, but his was the position that Lecce was attacking/defending completely. So he didn’t do much outside a nice shot or two that were pretty long range kind of things. I don’t think he made any memorable passes and I don’t think he sprung anyone for an open shot. So meh.

Forward
Position Score: 4.0

Blah. There was nothing here, really. Pazzini, I think it was, had a nice shot that the Lecce keeper saved with a miracle action. And that was about it. Pazzini had a volley that I think is still climbing the stratosphere. Milito had some nifty hustle moves, but there wasn’t any service generally.

Coach
Position Score: 4.5

Working with what he’s got – basically a team that isn’t really a 4312 without an Ibra/Eto’o type and isn’t really a 442 team either, I can cut I Claudius a lot of slack. He’s done well over the whole season considering the team and organization as a whole is under complete flux. On the other hand, I would at least try Alvarez in the Motta role and tell Cambiasso to kick his ass if he starts roaming. Or I would try to put Poli on the field. He’s on the team, we might as well use him. Or I might have used more players who didn’t play on Wednesday like Faraoni and Castaignos. Or I might have used Zanetti at LB to free up a midfield spot for a younger player that might move forward and back as we try to defend the counter all day.

Analysis

So this is where I am at. We have a team that is really built around the superstar forward putting enough pressure and keeping the ball long enough to paper over the creative deficiencies of our midfield.

And this is why there is so much talk about Montolivo and Kucka. Neither of these guys are box to box thoroughbreds or defensive destroyers. All they can do really well is pass the ball and play the first ball out of the midfield that advances the ball up and take pressure off the back third. This, by the way describes Motta almost perfectly. The only thing missing is that you get something a little extra with Motta – when he’s on he can actually play enough defense to be a pain in the ass to other teams.

We have proved that we don’t need the ball for 50% of the time to be effective, but what we do need is to string enough of a move together to get the ball forward and attack with effectively. If we are willing to cede possession then we need to more efficient to compensate for the lack of opportunity that ceding possession entails.

I really like to think that Branca has noticed this shit long before I did and the attempt to paper Forlan and Zarate over the Eto’o sized hole in the team was an effort to keep some idea of quality in the attack position of the team to buy time until the team had a chance to change the midfield and the defense over. Don’t forget that if we change the way the midfield works than the defense will have to change as well. We can’t go forward with big hulks that are most effective in small areas. That 3 man defensive midfield screen can’t be there if they also need to create more forward. So we are going to need defenders who can control a wider range of area. Think about that for a bit, when we start to welcome Juan Jesus the CB with experience as a LB.

The first time I bet on Inter this season was against Lecce

I never bet on Inter. I used to all the time, but at some point, before Calciopoli, I said no more - until the Lecce game

and few very rare occasions before that

  • Quattro stelle

Like: Palombo signing.  Someone who can rest Cambiasso and keep Zanetti on the wing (no more putting El Capitan at CDM!).  Tough, fighter.
DISLIKE: selling Motta.  Again, in the last 2.5 campaigns we've lost more games than won when Motta does not play.  Our winning streak this season happened when he returned to the pitch.
/Shrug: Guarin.  Don't follow Portuguese football.

  • Kazaan

Everything that came from Porto during the last 12 months has been inflated, like Villas Boas, Hulk, 30m valued Fernando and so on

Better to keep Motta than to sign Guarin

agree on Palombo, third player from Sampdoria in the last 12 months. He will do great with Poli, and especially with Pazzini

  • PDubz18

I hope these signings are with the view of buying Lavezzi this summer.

  • Drewsef

Well, it's pretty conspicuous that we didn't buy a forward, and also didn't spend any serious money, even though we were willing to spend nearly 30 million on one particular forward just a few weeks ago. Combine that with the fact that Moratti has been cozying up to De Laurentiis, and the fact that Inter sent reps to Sao Paulo over the last month, and I would imagine that a summer deal for either Lavezzi or Lucas Moura is probably already in place.

  • what is wrong with branca and co. we are signing more defensive minded midfielder's when we already have cambi, zanetti, poli and obi.
i would have prefered candreva instead of kucka(coz he's just not that good)/palombo(he is old).

  • InterMAD

Palombo - half year loan for the 30 year old midfielder. Right to buy - 4 million I think... For those not familiar with Angelo he's started out in Fiorentina right when they were experiencing financial troubles and was signed by Sampdoria in 2001, I think.

He's been their captain for forever it seems and he's noted for being a hard worker, good passer - he usually starts their offense, and very tough on the tackle. He's also a very good free kick taker.

We sold Motta, it looks like, which is unfortunate. He's a great player and I really liked him on the field. He has a lot of fire and desire to win. And technically he's excellent. Unfortunately he's fragile and not very athletic.

On the plus side we loaned Muntari out to Milan so we are spared paying that bloated wage forever, as Muntari's contract is up at the same time his loan spell. Unlike Motta, Muntari is an very good athlete and very durable. Also unlike Motta, Muntari isn't very technically gifted and is a good defensive player. Like Motta, Muntari is firery and has a great desire to win. He won't be missed by many but he was a part of a great team here.

  • Drewsef

Wow. Was not expecting Palombo at all. I actually like Palombo a lot -- he's a true professional, hard-working, no bullshit kind of guy. Glad someone rescued him from Serie B, as it wasn't his fault that Samp were mired down there.

All the same, he's not quite as good as Motta, and is a year older. Why do we keep getting into situations where we sell difficult-to-replace players at the last minute, then have to rush to fill the gap? It happened just last window, with Eto'o, now it's happening again.

  • InterMAD

Doesn't everything happen at the last minute in the transfer window?

  • Drewsef

Yes, it often does. But there's really no reason why it should, especially when it comes to selling an integral first-team player.

Oh well. Palombo will surely be an important player for us. And Guarin is essentially a replacement for Muntari, so assuming he gets to play at all then it's kind of a win-win. We're really going to miss Motta though, and I just wish our transfers seemed more proactive than just saying, "hey, here's a young prospect who may or may not see much of the pitch, and here's a guy to hopefully replace the guy we're abruptly losing."

  • InterMAD

Speaking to Sky, Tullio Tinti said of the deal:

"[Branca] has been speaking to [Palombo] for a while. 'Then Inter has closed the Motta transaction with PSG and Palombo was presented with an opportunity to come to Milan. He was [emotionally] tied up at Sampdoria, and still is, but he is happy, " confessed the agent.

  • kev9inter

That's want happens when your management is incompetent.

  • InterMAD

Oh and I don't know how many of you all care about the financial side of things but Motta's sale was about 10 million, the savings on his and Muntari's wages will be around another 6 million. Palumbo I am going to conservatively guess is on about 1-2 million per year tops.

So we add the sale of Motta + the cession of paying him + the cession of paying Muntari + what looks like the sale of Mariga back to Parma (damnit) + the loan of Coutinho to some team in Spain + the loan of several youngsters like Natalino - the loan of Guarin - the purchase of Juan - the loan of Palombo - the cost of paying Palombo, Juan and Guarin.

Net: +10ish million est. We'll see how it goes.

  • InterMAD

Rumor is that it's official - Motta to PSG for 10 million. He'll get 2.5 per year.

  • bri_o

Why was he in such a hurry to get out then? He was making 3/year here, right?

  • InterMAD

According to Ranieri, there were "issues".

I had to guess, Motta and his agent were getting antsy about Inter taking a wait and see on his renewal.

It's in Motta's interest to get a renewal or a new contract now when he's healthy and doing well because he'll obviously get a better contract. If Inter wait and see, then there is a possibility that the team might do worse, his health might give out - again, or other cheaper/younger/healthier options become available to the team and he'll be on the bench and his value will decrease.

And let's face it, he's got one more good contract left to his career. Now is the time he needs to act.

Is this a joke, Motta's agent: "Agreement reached between Inter and PSG only missing small
details but there's time until 19:00 CET to define everything." Unless were getting at least 15million euro PSG & our management can F**k off!

  • kev9inter

I really don't understand the excitement with the recent acquisition of Fredy Guarin, I mine come on he was nothing more than a rotation player for Porto. With they way some people have been talking you would think we had sign Schweinsteiger.

  • ajay2

Well it looks like we've tied up Fredy Guarin on loan for the rest of the season at 1.5m euros with an option to buy at the end of the season for another 11m euros. Good acquisition for me. I really like Fredy Guarin, just the kind of midfielder we need right now.

  • The thing is that we had some pretty bad matches this season and still
managed to win, now we had a bad game and we lost...

  • We need some fresh blood. Not necessarily young blood, fresh blood to
refresh our squad a little bit and hopefully give them some boost. Money
shouldn't stand in our way if we want to achieve some performances.
Milan offers 30 mil. € for Tevez. Fuck them. We're not backing out. We
offer 35 mil. € and buy him.

Also, why don't we buy Gaetano
D'Agostino? Just what we need: cheap, midfielder, plays CM and attacking
midfielder, also a playmaker sometimes, great technique, vision and
long passes, left footed, and he's also a dead ball specialist: Free
    kicks, penalties, corners...BANG! GOAL!
In my opinion he is one of the most underrated midfielders in Serie A.

    P.S.
Stop buying 18-20 year old players from Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands
etc. I don't care how promising they are or how many goals they have
scored in their leagues or how good INTERs scouts are. We are not
Arsenal, Ajax or Porto to buy a player with 5 mil. € and the sell him to
Real Madrid or City in a few years with 25-30 mil. €. That actually
sounds like a good plan but we don't have time for that right now. We
are in a crisis and we need players aged 24-29 who have already proven
themselves in one of Europe's top league. After all you don't wanna take
risks at this time, buying a youngster from South-America with 15 mil. €
and not knowing how he will perform in Europe. Getting accommodated, the language barrier, cultural differences, and all that stuff. Soon he finds out that the night clubs in Milano are pretty cool and that you can party and drink there as much as you want. He finds himself a prostitute who gets him drunk, puts some pills in his drink and then steals all his money and drives away with his Ferrari. And BANG just like that we got ourselves another Adriano: relatively young, fat, slow, lazy, overrated, party animal, cares more about how he dresses the about football and so on. (Don't get me wrong, I did like Adriano when he was at his top at INTER it's just that after that...well he...got distracted from football to say the least.)
Wanna make a bet? By the time Neymar turns 25 he will be a total flop at some top club in Europe. (He's an early bloomer, he will run out of fuel pretty soon.) Party, Party all night, Disco, Disco Zohan style, hanging out with prostitutes, 6 children, scandals, crashing his 500.000 Euro car, front pages everywhere (not beacause of his performances in football, but for some other reasons...) Can you guys imagine someone 4 times worse than Balotelli off the pitch? Neither can I. I guess we will just have to wait and see this Neymar kid after 5 years.
EVERY PLAYER SHOULD BE LIKE JAVIER "IL CAPITANO" ZANETTI.

Other players INTER should consider buying:

    • Marcell Jansen
    • Marko Marin
    • Marco Reus
    • Micah Richards (in case you guys get tired of Maicon. A Maicon <---> Richards swap could be a good deal. Obviously Maicon's offensive play tops that of Richard's but when it comes to defending I think that they are pretty much even. In 3-4 years Richards will be even better, where as Maicon won't, it's just that City doesn't know that, that's why we should make this swap just in case it comes along.)
    • Benoît Assou-Ekotto as a left back. Sell Chivu, bring Santon back and buy this guy. Assou-Ekotto is a pretty simple guy, he gets the ball back and then he passes it. That's it. He also supports the attack, has pretty good runs on the left side of the pitch. What  I like most about him is that he plays very constantly.
    • Gaetano
    D'Agostino
    • Marcel Schmelzer
    • Lucas Barrios. Why not?
    • Carlos Tevez. Why not?
    • Hulk. Why not?
    • Samir Handanovic, Asmir Begovic, if you're looking for some good Goalkeepers
    • Borja Valero
    • Marcos Senna
    • John Arne Riise
    • Sejad Salihović
    • Lukas Podolski
    • Andrei Arshavin

    • Christian Pander (he just extended his contract with Hannover) :(

The Arnautovic thing...he plays pretty good at Weder (when he isn't sitting on the bench). Got to know him more when I saw him play for 90 minutes. He had some bad days and some pretty BIG misses but except those he seemed like a fine player to me. Why did he only play 60 minutes for INTER in 38 matches? Well, that remains a mystery to me.

I like tall Goalkeepers. Viviano is a tall Goalkeeper (and young). Ever since the first day he arrived at INTER, he was "injured". Now, as soon as we loaned him to Palermo he has miraculously recovered. You know what? I wish that he has a good game against INTER on Wednesday just as Benassi did on Sunday. That, if he won't be "injured"...

Forlan is also "injured", did you know that? What did he do since he arrived? Played against Palermo (4-3), where he did score a goal. Played 60 seconds against ac milan and another 2-3 minutes against some other teams and had some fun on the tennis pitch with Schiavone.
And now he has some conflict with Ranieri and wants to play in Brazil. I like him, he's a good player and everything and he was a bargain considering what kind of player he is and for how much money we bought him. Same problem as with Zarate, he doesn't play for 90 minutes.
I think that it's stupid when a coach gets in conflict with one of his best players. Everyone suffers: the team, the fans and the coach might even get sacked for the bad results. Stupid thing. Shake hands, say sorry, admit you were wrong, PEACE, go out there and win the Serie A.

    (I'm still
pissed because we couldn't/didn't sign Sanchez. I guess that it's going
to take a little bit longer to get over this then I thought.)

Thank God Lucho Gonzalez left Marseille and returned to his former club, Porto. Our chances in the CL have just risen. He will be missed at OM, his shoes will be hard to fill, he left a gap in the midfield behind him, still, Valbuena, Remy, Ayew and André-Pierre Gignac will give us some real headaches.

    P.S.S. Bundesliga Rocks!

             Forza INTER!

  • Vinod

Nice post! I would have preferred to see the chicks Adriano partied with rather than his flabby half-nakedness, but hey, to each his/her own.

"Also, why don't we buy Gaetano D'Agostino?"
Because he only had a couple of good seasons at Udinese. Fiorentina took a chance with him, and he bombed it. Totally underwhelming. He hasn't done much at Siena this season either. Indeed, Udinese won his ticket by blind auction this summer, but chose to send him over to Siena instead, and look at how that's worked out for them. In theory he has the ability to be a good deep playmaker, but he hasn't performed in a year and a half. Of course, he may be a better option than Guarin given his Serie A experience, but since I haven't seen Guarin in action I shouldn't talk.

  • I suck at football. I am not ashamed to admit it. But the please,
someone who knows more about football than me, explain why isn't Zarate playing 90 minutes? He's either substituted after the first
half (even if he has a good game) or introduced in the 78th minute when
we are 1 or 2 goals behind and then every INTER player on the pitch is
just pissed off because they just can't score a goal. And you know, when
somebody's pissed off they tend to suck in no matter what they do. The
game isn't going as planned, passes can't be completed successfully and
so on. Zarate attempts a lot of dribblings, maybe too much at times and
he also tends to loose the ball quite often which would be a problem in
normal circumstances but in the 85th minute when a team like Lecce is leading, then, it's a total disaster and he looks like a
total fool. Then come the critics, low ratings and at the end of the
season back to Lazio and BANG we just lost another good player.

    He's
going to end up just like Quaresma. We really need a player like him
(Zarate) to be on the pitch for as long as possible because he has great
technique, dribbling skills and he can beat a man one-to-one. He could
also get a lot of penalties and free kicks for us. The problem is that
he holds on to the ball for too long, passes very few times and looses
    the ball quite often.

Play him 90 minutes in 10 consecutive
games or so and he will be indispensable for the team and Lazio will be
sorry for having agreed to sell him with 20mil. € at the end of the
season if INTER decides to keep him.

P.S. Ranieri is a coach without
inspiration. Always making a bad substitution at a bad moment.

  • Drewsef

You know, for my part, I like the IDEA of Zarate on the
team. A tricky dribbler and foul-winner to occupy the wider forward positions,
take people on and free up space elsewhere. If we played with three out in
front, he’s exactly the TYPE of player I’d want there, and since we’re now Eto’o-less
and Mario-less, there’s really no one else on the team to do that. But that’s
all in theory – in practice, I just don’t think he’s really good enough. He’s
got the capabilities, but he just doesn’t seem to know how to apply them to an
actual match situation. Zarate’s approach is such that, whenever he gets the
ball, he’ll either do something amazing and dribble through half the defense,
or else he’ll try something ill-advised and immediately give it away. And as
pointed out below, the latter scenario occurs far, far, far more often.

Basically, to be the kind of player Zarate wants to be, you
have to have the intelligence and the instincts to back up the skills. And I’ve
seen nothing that really suggests that he has those. I mean, the fact that we
had to include an “assist bonus” in his contract just to get him to pass the goddamn
ball says a lot. And the fact that we’ve never once had to pay him the aforementioned
    assist bonus says even more.

  • Vinod

Technically, we did pay him that bonus once -- he assisted Pazzini's goal vs Lille.

I was very excited to have Zarate in our squad, because the little bitch usually dribbled his way into our area more often than not when he played against us. But seeing him week in and week out like we did at the start of the season and it became painfully obvious that he has the worst decision making ever.

It also makes me wonder what would have happened if we put a player with Zarate's skill on a player with Cuchu's intelligence. Oh wait, isn't that why Messi is so famous?

  • Um...going a bit far with the Messi skill comparison?  Also, FC Inter 1908 with the understatement of the year: "Zarate attempts a lot of dribblings, maybe too much at times"

  • Abyssight

Did you actually watch the game? Zarate was easily the worst player on the field after he was subbed on.

He couldn't get down the left flank. He didn't pass the ball to Nagatomo who made many overlapping runs only to be ignored. Whenever he got the ball, he dribbled himself to a poor position and made a poor cross. All he did was giving away possession cheaply and relieved the pressure on Lecce.

Don't be deceived by his dribbling that works 1 out of 20 times. He has zero football intelligence and is not the answer for our offensive problem. And TBH, he probably isn't half as talented as Quaresma.

  • Sqpek

    +1 to that

i believe ranieri to be smart enough to see that Zarate's wonderfactor died out, that's why he is benching him. Sure we could have him play every game and dribble 10 thousand times, that would of course lead to some successful attempts at goal, but i don't really think it corresponds with inter's style of play, and Mauro just isn't enough to build the whole team around him
