Lucio, Lucio, Wherefore Art Thou Lucio?

By: MAD | July 21st, 2009

This week we welcome a new member of the Inter family, Lucimar Ferreira da Silva. That’s him down there.

Lucio is currently the captain and starting centerback of the Brazilian National Team. He was formerly the starting Center Back for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Monaco (Otherwise known as Bayern Munchen or Bayern Munich for those who missed this gem of an exchange: “As for Lo Monaco I do not know who he is. With the name Monaco I have heard of Bayern Monaco and the Monaco GP, the Tibetan Monaco, and the Principality of Monaco. I have never heard of any others.”)

Lucio has decided to throw his lot with us for the low, low price of 5 million Euros.

Lucio had been a starter on Bayer Leverkusen from 2001, when he was 23 years old, until 2004. Highlights of his stay in Leverkusen include scoring in the Champions League Finals versus Galaticos 1.0. He played over 90 games and scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga. He added 22 more games and 3 more goals in Europe.

In 2004, when he was 26, he joined Bayern Monaco. In his 5 years with Monaco he played 144 games in the Bundesliga and scored 7 times. He added 45 more games in Europe and scored 4 more times for Monaco. He was recently named Vice-Captain.

He played every minute of every game Brazil played in the 2002 World Cup. In 2006, as most of you know Brazil lost to France in a 1-0 quarter final game.

His trophy cabinet is pretty full as well. He has a World Cup, 3 Bundesliga Championships a brace of Confederations Cups, 3 DFB Cups and 3 DFB Supercups.

Okay, now that we have his CV down, I think we can say that he’s certainly qualified. To reiterate the question in the title, what is his purpose?

His purpose is not to play “hard man” Walter Samuel defense, although he can certainly do that if he needs to. If that were the only reason to go after him, then we could have gotten lots of guys to do that. The reason we went after Lucio is because he can carry the ball forward and play in between the “bands” as Mourinho puts it.

If one were to draw up the traditional line up of a football team on paper, you would have a defensive line, a midfield line and a forward line. Mourinho’s ideas center on playing and pressuring the ball in between the traditional positions or “bands”. For example, everybody on earth can tell you that Mourinoho favors a 4-3-3. But he doesn’t really. He really favors playing different formations based on whether his team has the ball or not. For example, on attack the 4-3-3 could become the 2-1-3-4 or the 4-3-2-1 on defense.

And Lucio really plays in between the defensive “bands” and the midfield “bands” in kind of the same way that Mario really plays in between the midfield and the forwards. He plays a little higher up on defense – perfect for collecting those through balls and lobs to attacking players making runs in those spaces that exist in traditional formations. He can also bring the ball forward a bit. So, theoretically, the attacking play for our team starts further up the pitch and hopefully negates a lot of our forwards having to come back too far to get the ball.

Is Lucio perfect? No, by the very nature of his position he often has to confront attacking players who are attacking in space. We all should know by now that attacking players like space to work in and defensive players try like hell to limit the space of attacking players. So, since he’s working in space he’s going to get burned sometimes. That’s the nature of playing a high line – ask Juventus last season. The idea is that there is going to be cover, but nothing is perfect. The gamble is that he’ll clean up those troublesome through balls – more than let through and hurt us, anyway – and then launch the counter attack.

So, in practical terms, whose spot does he take? He should be in a rotation with Samuel, Chivu and Cordoba. He’s a better Center Back than Burdisso and probably more mobile than Materazzi – who he shares a lot of characteristics with, in my opinion. He also has a nice mean streak when his tail is up and he can be pretty ruthless when the occasion calls for it.

So welcome Lucio, I hope that he can form good partnerships with the other defensemen and hasten the departure of Rivas and Burdisso.

Video

Marco, this is Lucio, your future teammate…

Did I mention a mean streak?

1.Inter is one of the best supported clubs in Italy. The fans didn’t stop coming when Baggio/Vieri/Ronaldo left. They won’t stop now Ibra’s gone.

2.Pirelli has been Inter’s main sponsor for 14+ year now. Don’t see it changing soon.

3.Moratti has oil money. He can find the money when he’s ready to build a new stadium. And Inter not buying talent isn’t the problem. In the past they’ve been criticized for spending too much. Look what happens when they take a chance on some youth players. Balotelli and Santon emerge.

    Everything will be fine.

P.S. Moratti will be in Boston for the derby. I know I have to make a sign. Any suggestions on what it will say?

I’m thinking something like asking Moratti to bring us Cassano or telling Mourinho to shave.

so all the things you just touched on…. how do they tie to Ibra? Gate receipts at away stadiums don’t help Inter.

The team was not winning at anfield, old trafford, the mestalla, highbury etc… before or during Ibra. So what does away support have to do with him? Are you saying Ibra would not have missed those sitters at anfield if there were more Inter fans there? It’s anfield and liverpool is massive. As far as I know they allot a certain amount of away support.

I am not concerned about support during the pre-season in the USA. I just am not. The english premiere league is shoved into people’s

Sponsorship was there before him. As far as I know it still is.

what does a bar in my town or any other town showing the premiere league over serie a have to do with anything? I recently traveled all over europe and did not miss one Inter match. On that same trip I went to the Milan Derby and sat among 85000 fans there for the love of their teams, not Ibrahimovic. Are you telling me the Meazza is going to be empty when the next derby is played?

There are also 3 bars within 2km of my house that I can choose to watch Serie A at. I choose to watch them at home.

Winning breeds all of what you are talking about. Not Ibra.

I don’t need my own blog to tell you how I feel. Results matter to me. I see the letting Ibra go as a way for Inter to improve their results, thus helping contribute to all things you mentioned.

I am well aware that football is a business as much as it is a sport. Sometimes it is good business to win high profile matches, NO? While it is sad to see a great talent leave Inter, you can’t help but think how this can help the club in the long term.

    Without results there is nothing.

woops didn’t finish a sentence there:

I am not concerned about support during the pre-season in the USA. I just am not. The english premiere league is shoved into people’s faces. Serie A is regarded as boring here to the casual fan. here people buy into the fast paced action of the prem, broadcasters by the rights. Is it Inter’s fault that that happened?

Saturday’s practice session is at 4pm on the 25th featuring both teams for approximately 90 min each.

I think the practice is going to be at Gillette stadium. That’s where I am going to be in 24 hours!!

I agree with ScudettoStarved – I don’t see why we need to BUY a superstar to launch us onto the global market, when we have talent in the form of Balotelli and Santon waiting in the wings. Let me point something out: Barca’s biggest superstars are all home-grown players. Henry and Eto’o (and now Ibra :( ) were the only ones who were bought. And look at where Messi, Iniesta, Xavi are now. Of course, it takes a few extra years, but won’t it be worth the wait?

I can easily see Balotelli become as big a brand as some of these guys – bigger, perhaps, because he thrusts himself out and makes his presence felt, unlike Messi and co who are shy guys. A few good showings in Europe, and he’ll have built himself a platform. Again: there’s proof that this has happened in the past. Do you guys remember in 2002-2003 when we reached the CL semi-finals? Do you know who UEFA used to market the next season’s CL? Obafemi Martins – with all his somersaults. That shot him and Inter into instant fame. Its another thing that he faded out pretty quickly, mostly because of the Newcastle move. But that tournament and the following marketing campaign made him a known face.

For that matter, if Cassano arrives, I don’t see why he can’t become a cult icon either. Troubled magician, kid that grew up too late, Peter Pan, whatever. It all works.

    1. I am not concerned about support during the pre-season in the USA. I just am not. The english premiere league is shoved into people’s –
Why ant u concerned tell me won’t u have loved it if the Stadium was full to capacity and if they were great amount of people coming to the airport to meet our boys, who are u kidding .. Won’t u have loved it if Inter play a great football then that punching football they display won’t u have loved it more if Lampard and a other great champions were in ur team apart from a Ibra , Santon and Barwuah are still young and so we will start rating them when their cycle begins.

2.how do they tie to Ibra?
With Ibra in our squad our brand is better then with Eto’o we sold a world star to a team that’s already better then ours , so Inter then is like a middle team when we put all the big teams together because we can’t keep any star in our team ,

3.Inter is one of the best supported clubs in Italy. The fans didn’t stop coming when Baggio/Vieri/Ronaldo left. They won’t stop now Ibra’s gone …..
Inter is ranked 3rd behind Milan and Juve , what do u expect Inter is in Italy and so will get support us while us they win titles in Italy but the Inter brand is distributed world wide and not only in Italy so we can’t just count on Italians fans alone when it comes to selling we count on the world .

4.Pirelli has been Inter’s main sponsor for 14+ year now. Don’t see it changing soon.
Yes it has but then tell me what difference has it made for us during those past years.

5..Moratti has oil money. He can find the money when he’s ready to build a new stadium. And Inter not buying talent isn’t the problem. In the past they’ve been criticized for spending too much. Look what happens when they take a chance on some youth players. Balotelli and Santon emerge.
Tell me how many years u have being an Inter fan and i will tell u what we have being spending and spending our money on . Real Madrid,Chelsea ,Man U , Barce are the teams who spend and reinforce not spend and loosen up , Inter were those times spending money on average players . Through all this Decade Ibra is our best buy out of all the buys we made and for this many years he has being with the club we have never made a major buy meaning there isn’t money to spend or we just don’t know how to spend , Morrati oil money u must be kidding me is like Milan saying we are still rich because our owner is the prime minister of Italy.

6.Gate receipts at away stadiums don’t help Inter.
You are right but we need to sell shirt and brands to make Inter great than we are today there is no big club who in this modern world is only thinking of the local fans they think global .

6.what does a bar in my town or any other town showing the premiere league over serie a have to do with anything?
Are u kidding me it is call POOR , maybe u are an Italian and lives there so then u get to talk with other fans and feel the enthusiasm of football ( Seria A ) but Seria A needs to be improve for people outside Italy who also love Inter , Milan , Juventus and the rest God it is a shame to think of two great clubs like Milan and Inter still shearing Stadium .

7 . Without results there is nothing.
Who get the result ? We can’t beat the best when we sell our best it doesn’t work that way if Inter becomes a good brand we will keep our stars trout on for the CL final and win it , raise our bar high , people will also call us ” the world best club ” we will have players saying i want to play for Inter , we will have other team stars praising us and wanting to move to us we will be Inter and we will paint the town Blue/Black , tell me us u read do u see this happening now . hmmm

8.Are you telling me the Meazza is going to be empty when the next derby is played?
My main priority is not Meazza and am not all about Italy us i have stated before if left for Italy alone then Inter doesn’t have problem but it is how Inter becomes a great brand in the future that am talking of and how we are going to win the CL to be Europe best or even make it to the final am sure many of that will take that over super cup smile . We are in the future going to loose star’s like Maicon and it is not because they are macenary’s but they don’t see Inter buying champions but they see Inter selling Champions how do u feel their dream of adding a CL medal or a CL final Madel is going to happen .eg. Zanneti has being in the club and seen champions come and go , we will be regarded in the world still us a middle ranked team when they group the world best because we are always about making star’s and giving them up . Eto’o has won it all tell me were the inspiration will come from this guy has nothing to loose 5 years deal 10.5 mil a year , he has 2 CL titles ,Spanish league title and much more he just needs to win Seria A and thats all but for CL he wouldn’t have the same inspiration like he did when he won it with Barce , why do u think Guardiola let him leave and payed all that money for Ibra ? he needed someone who wants it more and will die to have it added under his belt , around Europe Ibra is the best striker who wants this more and can help Barce grap it even it can help him win Ballondor. It isn’t because of contract Issue if Inter were able to offer Eto’o better contract Barce will 10 times will have being able to do that .

9.I went to the Milan Derby and sat among 85000 fans there for the love of their teams, not Ibrahimovic
Yes for the love of the club but it is players like Ibra who helps in giving 85000 people to the stadium whether Milan fan or Inter fan . Am an Eto’o fan but i tell u what how many player’s can be so determined like in the Lazio games to play the swift passes with Muntari and score the cracker from that angle .Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE BUT I WANT US TO START KEEPING OUR PLAYERS AND MAKE IT BETTER FOR US EACH YEAR .AMEN.

Jo, the Pirelli thing was me. Not many companies can match the money that Nike & adidas bring to football. But Pirelli obviously holds some weight at Inter (pretty sure they have a rep on Inter’s board) and I’m sure they didn’t get that pull just because they’re friends of the family.

i am kinda happy that this transfer saga spanned this amount of time, ’cause now i am completely prepared for ibra no longer wearing an inter jersey. not many of us would have survived if it was anything like ronaldos move to madrid, sudden and shocking. i dont feel that sense of betrayal as ronaldos move. ibra is making a pure footballing move, wishes he could stay and win europe with inter, but has more of a chance at barca. the deal we are getting is not bad at all. one of the best goalscorers in the world, a playmaker in hleb, and a huge chunk of money to buy anyone from ribery to cassano to lavezzi, even hamsik.

ibra did great great things at inter and when he finally retires he is probably going to be best remembered for his days at inter, even if he succeeds at barca. like herny with arsenal. henry just won the treble but will mostly remembered as a gunner.

as a major fan of ibra a wish him the best of luck with barca and cant wait to see what he does at barca. i am sure he will rock the whole of spain.

best of luck ibra……theirs still life after retirement, a coaching or ambassador role perhaps?

this move may actually make us play better, more of a team(when we get a creative midfielder), instead of entire team win ball back – give to maicon – maicon run on right – maicon cross – ibra chest – ibra dribbles past 2-3 defenders – ibra scores. with ibra gone our ‘targetman’ also goes. the manchester utd game is prime example. lump it forward to ibra and drool in anticipation to what he does. he gets closed down by three players, ‘damn that no good cl flop!’ .with eto and ‘creative mid’ coming in we now dont rely on just one person to do the magic(albeit it was some awesome stuff).

and the thing about ibra being a global brand. yup he sure is, he did his thing, converted many into inetristi, we were there before and will be there after, continuing to win.

almost everyone says it was ronaldo who got them to be an inter supporter, when he left they stayed, same now. plus eto is also a global brand, from an african angle. like drogba, or essien or even adebayor, eto is well known in africa. if we are successful, just how many do you thing will be converted into inter supporters in africa? plus inter already has a name for itself in africa through youth projects and all.

@Kirby: Nothing wrong with someone becoming an Inter fan only because of Zlatan, as long as they continue to support the club after he leaves. No, I’m not one of those, but I’m almost as bad, because just like Ajay mentioned, I’m one of those who became an Inter fan when Ronaldo joined us 12 years ago. Only, back then I was such a young kid that only something as phenomenal as R9 could have actually captured my interest to begin with. Of course, we all know how that story went.

Bottom line: So big deal if you only started watching Inter because you were a Zlatan fan – stay with us now, that’s all that really counts.

Also ajay: Mourinho’s getting famous in Africa too. He’s been spending summers there launching pet projects…
