Meet the New Mister or Roberto Who?
By: Johonna | June 3rd, 2008
As everyone who is even slightly interested in football now knows, Jose Mourinho is officially the new coach of F.C. Internazionale Milano. He has signed a 3 year contract and appointed Giuseppe Baresi, Inter’s youth academy director, as his vice coach. Other staff includes Rui Farias, Silvino, and Andrei Villas Boas.
Jose Mourinho was presented at a press conference at the Inter campus in Appiano Gentile. If you watch the videos of this (part 1 and part 2), you will see that Jose was charming the pants off of the reporters. Then, with that last little bit of Milanese dialect (at least, that is what I am told it is), he had them eating out of his hands. It doesn’t hurt that he is a bit of a looker.
The big question is just how does he plan to change the team. Here is what he said:
I want to work in a team of 20-21 players plus the goalkeepers. … I like the players in my squad and I don’t need to make radical changes. For myself and the management, the team just needs two or three players to improve and be even more competitive.
Our first squad has 24 players plus goalkeepers and Adriano. Given Jose’s statement, we have a little fat to trim. So, if we get three new players, we will need to loose about 6 from our current squad. Who’s it gonna be? We have plenty of forwards, so I doubt we will be investing there. We have buckets of midfielders but most of them were either injured or crap this season. We have 8 defensive players – just the right number (I think) but at least one of them needs replacing. So hopefully one of our precious new hires will be for there. The other two should be really stupendously wonderful midfield players.
So here is who I think should stay and who should go.
Julio Cesar: Keep! He is definetly one of the best there is!
Orlandoni: Keep, I guess. He just signed a new contract and all. He only had three appearances last season: Palermo-Inter, then subbed in during Inter-Genoa, and Reggina-Inter Coppa Italia game. It is a bit hazy, but I think he did ok.
Toldo: Keep. He is aging, but still better than Ballota! Still, as I recall, he made some great saves in that return leg of the Juve match-up in the Coppa Italia. I think he still has at least one good season left in him.
—-
Burdisso: Sell – if someone wants him, that is. Dont get me wrong, he has had a couple really great games, but by and large, he has been a problem. I would gladly replace him. But with whom?
Chivu: Keep. Despite his injury problems, he is a solid presence in our back line. Besides, I like the illiteration of this name – it is pleasant to say. Try it: Christian Chivu. Fun!
Cordoba: Keep. He is usually at least adequate with a few moments of brilliance (that first Inter-Roma game comes to mind) and really, what more can you ask of a person.
Maicon: Keep. His fast breaks up the flank send the opposing midfielders into a panic. He is usually a joy to watch.
Materazzi: Keep. I wont go into it, lets just say I am biased.
Rivas: Keep. He is young and just entering his prime. Hopefully Jose can bring out the best in him.
Samuel: KEEP! What can I say, he is the wall.
Zanetti: KEEP! Il Capitano.
—-
Cambiasso: Keep. The best midfielder we’ve got!
Cesar: Sell. He started the season well, but has sadly deteriorated. That last game with Parma, every time he got the ball, he lost it. Really, almost every pass was bad.
Dacourt: Keep. Before he was injured, he was great.
Pelé: Keep. A little rash and a bit inconsistent, but he has great potential.
Jimenez: Keep. A great kid with a bright future. Lets make sure it is here at Inter.
Figo: Keep. This will be his last year – let him go out in style. Also, I think his pass accuracy is much needed. If we can use him as a play maker I think he can be a real asset.
Maniche: Sell. He didnt really work out for us.
Maxwell: Keep. With a couple exceptions, he has been solid. I would like to see a little more inventiveness, though.
Solari: Sell. He, also, has just not fit in.
Stankovic: Sell. He has his moments, but I think he should follow Mancini to Chelsea. He has had a couple good showings, but he is just too fragile and inconsistent.
Vieira: Keep – maybe. He regained his form towards the end of this last season and it has been great, but… Well, he is also aging and plagued with thigh problems. In fact, he may be out of the Euros because of it. This will be his last season also.
—-
Balotelli: Keep. Duh. The kid is going to be a star.
Crespo: Keep. He says he is happy on the bench and maybe Mourniho can work some of his mojo on him and help bring him back to the form he had in his long-hair days. Besides, he has worked with Mourinho before (although not very successfully) and Mourinho thinks that Crespo could be his friend. Everyone needs friends.
Cruz: Keep. I think. If we get another striker, I think Cruz should go. Still, he really came through for us this last season. This one is particularly difficult for me. I wouldn’t be upset if he was part of a trade.
Ibrahimovic: Keep. I think Mourinho will be a great foil for his enormous ego. Hopefully he will be focused and in good health next season.
Suazo: Sell or loan. I hate to give up on him – he was so good at Cagliari. Still, he has not managed to fit into this team. It is too bad, but I just dont think Milan suits him. I would like to see him go some place where he can shine.
Adriano?: He looks pretty good. I say, give him out on loan for at least 6 months and see how he does back in Italy. Sampdoria or Napoli would be great for him – provided Cassano is not a bad influence.
Now, the next question is who should he buy? but I will leave that for another time. For now, there is
Mourinho’s message for us, the fans:
First of all compliments for winning the Scudetto, which was very important. From now on I am Inter’s biggest fan because this club is my life. I want to work for this great club and bring my great passion for football, to make all the Nerazzurri fans happy.
Allora Ragazzi, siamo felici? Sì ! Benvenuto Mister Mourinho!

ursus i agree with you except i think either Suazo or crespo will probably leave since balotelli is above them both. Regarding the transfer market, I think a lot depends on how well Samuel and Cordoba are recovering. Judging by the Wall’s new contract, one would assume that he at least is doing great. but then again our doctors are idiots. Cordoba was amazing before his injury. He’s also 32 by the time next season starts (samuel is 30). i love rivas, but he’s no superstar. Carvalho is 30. SO who can we buy? my money is on carvalho with burdisso and possibly materazzi leaving BUT if cordoba and samuel both recover perfectly then perhaps no defensive reinforcements (materazzi + rivas are decent backup…maybe).
i’m sure we will buy at least one midfielder. I hope it’s quaresma. i love essien, but we need some flair. both would be great! so 3 players – carvalho, essien, and quaresma. unfortunately, i doubt we have that much money.
but maybe moratti will decide to be generous again. who knows.
forza inter.

Why not? I’ll try my hand at this too, just my two cents and I know a lot of people will disagree…
Assuming 21 (besides the keepers) at the most, which Mourinho seems pretty set on…
Keep: Zanetti, Maicon, Materazzi, Samuel, Cordoba, Chivu, Rivas, Maxwell, Vieira, Cambiasso, Dacourt, Pele, Jimenez, Figo, Crespo, Cruz, Ibra, Adriano, and figure 3 new faces
**The two guys that I barely put on here are Dacourt (for the reasons pointed out, age and injury) and Maxwell. Maxwell’s level of play went down last year, we have Chivu, and if Mourinho brings in 2 midfielders (say Deco and Lampard) then we’re probably going to see Zanetti as the left fullback quite a bit.
Out: Burdisso, Cesar, Solari, Stankovic (can’t see him here without Mancio), Suazo, and I’d loan out Balotelli… He’s already grumbling about his contract and playing time. Rumor has it that there are people inside the club that have been worried about his attitude since the day he walked in the door as a kid. I would bring him to camp in July and let Mourinho see if he can straighten him out.
I left Maniche off. There’s no way to say that he should be bought based on what we saw but Mourinho had him at Porto so he might have a different opinion of him than we do.

So what about Quaresma? He says he wants to leave, and now with Porto possibly out of the CL now may be a good time to swoop.

Kabir, I think you are right. Either Crespo or Suazo will leave, especially if a new striker is signed and/or Adriano comes back. My money would be on Suazo, because Crespo has played for Mourinho before and they know each other well and because Suazo was a massive disappointment and is easy to tag as being “Mancini’s mistake”.

i’m all for adri to return to inter. zlats-adri will be amazing next year. i am not going to speculate what we’re gonna look like next year because it is going to be pointless. the side could go in a million and one different directions. but i hope we buy R.Q.

I’ll ask again. How many times have those clamoring for Adriano to return seen him play for either Sao Paulo or Brazil?
He still isn’t the Imperatore, and Milano is absolutely the worse possible environment for him to get his head back together.

I saw him play for about 15 minutes in that friendly against Canada (see my last post), but what can you tell from that? That is why I think he should come back to Serie A, but not to Inter. A little trial run.

I think we need two midfielders. One very good winger and one very good Central Midfielder. This why I say drop Dacourt. We’d have the new signing, Cambiasso, Viera, Pele and as a last resort Chivu if ever needed. I just cannot see Dacourt being featured very much. Plus, don’t forget, we have obatined Tomas Locatelli from Siena, no?
Rivas could stay, It was just a suggestion to loan him out for a season where he would see some decent minutes and gain some experience.
Our strikers could very well be Ibra, Cruz, Crespo, Balotelli and Adriano.
So 3 signings. My (far fetched?) wish list: Quaresma, Aquilani/Rosina, Christian Maggio. It probably won’t be close to this). I am just not big Premier League players coming to Inter Carvalho, Essien, Lampard etc, regardless of the fact that they have played for Mourinho and like him.
So we’d look like this (hypothetical of course):
Julio Cesar, Toldo, Orlandoni
ZANETTI, Maicon, Maxwell, Chivu, Cordoba, Samuel, Materazzi, Rivas and Maggio (9).
Cambiasso, Figo, Viera, Jimenez, Pele, and hopefully Quaresma, Aquilani/Rosina (or both), Locatelli (8)
Ibra, Cruz, Crespo, Balotelli and Adriano (5).
22 players + keepers. Not a bad squad at all.
I still say we could loan Rivas out. I can’t see him playing much. And I would still like to see Aquafresca there. I’m stubborn, I know

Paolo I’m pretty sure the Locatelli stuff was just rumors…
as for aquilani, I would be shocked if Roma sold him and especially to Inter. As for Rosina…he looked great this season but I would be a little worried that he’s Suazo like in the sense that he needs to be the star of his club.Do you guys know of any defensive prospects other than Carvalho? I think a fit Cordoba/Samuel partnership in the center would be great but if one or both of them don’t recover fully we need some new blood. Any ideas?

Well, La Gazzetta seems to think it will be Stankovic, Crespo, Suazo and Burdisso on the chopping block. Also, that instead of looking so much to England, Mourinho will be going to South America (we like them Argis!). Apparently, Mourinho will meet with Adriano in Brazil.
http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Primo_Piano/2008/06_Giugno/04/adriano.shtml
Oh, and congratulations Primavera team! We are into the finals. This is good for us, show we have talent waiting in the wings. I think that a good youth program is the hallmark of a truly successful team.

And as for Aquilani, it looks like Juve is after them – if you believe Tribal Football. They say that:
“Juventus have offered Aquilani £2.5 million-a-year, with the midfielder currently on just £600,000-a-year at Roma.
Aquilani is seeking £1.8 million-a-year to stay with Roma, but the club’s last offer fell £500,00-a-year short. A new meeting is scheduled between the parties before the weekend.”

Tribal Football is often complete garbage, but Juve (though Elkann) did indeed make goo goo eyes at Aquilani yesterday. I don’t see him leaving Roma either, at least for another Italian club.
Paolo, I admire your tenacity. I admire even more your dedication to trying to improve Inter’s “Italianita”. Being a foreigner myself, I’m not a big one for nationalities, but I do believe it is important that Inter do what they can to increase the number of Italians on the pitch. Balotelli helps in that respect; the results of the Primavera that Johanna notes do as well (the win over Udinese was notable because Udinese are very good at this level and because Balotelli was suspended), but they can do more.
That’s why they are still very interested in keeping at least half of Acquafresca’s registration. And the guys you’ve named are probably the best Italian prospects at this point in time who are theoretically available from other Serie A clubs.
That said, I’m still of the view that there will only be 2 or 3 additions. Mourinho doesn’t want to play Championship Manager, he realises that he is under a great deal of pressure and needs to minimise distractions, and wants a relatively small group that are willing to die for him. That’s what he had at Porto and Chelsea. To my mind, any such a group needs “role players” like Dacourt, Maxwell and Rivas.
As for central defenders, I haven’t seen any names other than Carvalho, but it is still quite early in the transfer season. Mourinho knows defenders, and will have had his eyes out. I’m sure he would have looked at Bosingwa.

How sure are we of Dacourt’s contract status? Goal.com is rarely reliable but they are usually not this far off. As I said, this is goal.com so provide your own salt…
“Controcampo now says that another three Inter players will be offloaded, as Santiago Solari, Cesar and Olivier Dacourt will not be offered new contracts, and will join new teams on a Bosman transfer.”
Posted from

That may be right. Seems it was a two year deal when he joined from Roma, but he hasn’t been mentioned in the lists of players “certain” not to get renewals (unlike Solari and Cesar).
I think Crespo is also out of contract right now.

Aquilani would be sick, but I don’t see him coming to either Juve or Inter. Probably us first though.
We’re still linked with Burdisso and Stankovic. Not to mention the fact that they are dirty nerazzurri…..why the hell would any team want them, Burdisso first and foremost??
Normally I’d chalk it up to stupid rumors but with Captain Insano at the helm (Secco) anything is possible.

Apparantly those two players are also linked to a possible trading partner in spain as Inter officials are currently in Spain meeting with teams to see who is available and/or sanely priced.

Well, Burdisso just played excellently with the Argentina national team. Perhaps he just needs a change in venue to do his best work. Juve might get a real steal with him.

C. Zanetti was the man, but I’d rather not be the rehab home for Inter rejects, even if they turn out great for us.

Some quick thoughts:
Jimenez–keep. I really like this young player. I think he’s got a bright future.
Balotelli–loan him out so he can get some experience and time on the pitch. Kinda a hot head.
Figo–I like him but I think we could loose him. He’s getting too old.
Suazo–loan him out. Cagliagi might want him back
Matrix–I like Marco but I wouldn’t be surprised if Inter let him go. (Sorry Johonna)Posted from

Wow. Well Alessio, Inter rejects have been known to go on to do fabulous things (Pirlo, Cannavaro, etc.). I think that if a player is good and willing to give their all for the Nerazzurri, they are welcome – no matter which team they used to play for.

I wouldn’t accept Ibra or Vieira back, ever, even if they paid us to come.
I didn’t say none, I said I don’t want it to be a habit. Grosso is actually my #1 target.

From perusing La Gazzetta, it seems pretty clear that Mourinho will put Crespo, Adriano, Stakovic, Burdisso, and Suazo up for sale and will not renew contracts for Solari, Cesar, or Dacourt. We will also not pick up Maniche’s contract.
So, that means we are out 8 players. By all accounts, we are not looking for strikers. If you recall, this last season, due to injury, we needed every last striker we had at our disposal. Loosing 2 (Crespo and Suazo) worries me. Perhaps we are looking to promote a Primavera player (Siligardi?). We will also definitely need to infill the midfield now – we are loosing 5 midfield players!

J, I think you have gotten your cart way out in front of your horse there. Pretty much everything right now is sheer speculation, and the Gazzetta is just doing what it has to do to fill its Inter-dedicated pages and sell newspapers.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Maniche, Solari, Dacourt, Cesar, Burdisso and Stankovic are/will be gone.
Burdisso and Stankovic are linked with every club EXCEPT Inter and I think that, in this case, where there is smoke there is fire.
Of Crespo, Suazo and Adriano I think that it is reasonable to accept that one or two of these might be sold. It can also be said, but not as likely I think, that we also might keep all three.
In any event, we can be reasonably sure that we will lose AT LEAST 5 midfielders and a defender (personally I think we might lose up to nine players, but who knows?). We are going to have to make up the loses at some point this summer and I think it will take more than two purchases to do so

I agree with your first sentence. It was the three forwards in J’s list that occasioned by comment.
Particulary as Moratti said yesterday that Adriano is coming back (he also repeated the “2 or 3″ number). Keep in mind that Mourinho has always worked with a smaller squad than has been typical at Inter under Moratti.
