Mid-Week News Dump

JC with his bag of balls like a little hobo keeper. This International break could not come at a worse time. Here we are, all pumped up after our first win of the season and now we have to twiddle our thumbs for two weeks while praying feverishly to the Calcio Gods that no one gets hurt. Most of the squad has packed up their balls and gone to play for their respective countries but that doesn’t mean that the few left in Milan get to slack. Nope, there is still training and, this weekend, a friendly against a Swiss team.

INTERNATIONAL GAMES

Inter have 14 first-team players and 1 Primavera player called up for International duty between now and next Wednesday. The list below is sorted by competition and country, with all times shown in US pacific and eastern.

Italy, UEFA Under-21 European Championship:

Italy: Mario Balotelli, Lorenzo Crisetig
– Wales v Italy (Swansea, Friday 4 September at 11:45am pacific, 2:45pm eastern)
– Italy v Luxembourg (Novara, Tuesday 8 September at noon pacific, 3pm eastern)

Interestingly, Crisetig is only 16 years old, and, if he actually plays in either of those games, would set a record for the youngest player to compete in Italy’s U21 squad. The record right now is held by Federico Macheda (Manchester United), who made his Italy U21 debut at 18.

2010 World Cup qualifiers

Italy: Davide Santon
– Georgia v Italy (Tbilisi, Saturday 5 September at 11am pacific, 2pm eastern)
– Italy v Bulgaria (Turin, Wednesday 9 September at 11:50am pacific 2:50pm eastern)

Julio Cesar, Lucio, and Maicon play with Kaka

Brazil: Lucio, Maicon, Julio Cesar
– Argentina v Brazil (Rosario, Saturday 5 September at 5:30pm pacific, 8:30pm eastern)

Argentina: Javier Zanetti, Diego Milito

– Ghana v Sudan (Accra, Sunday 6 September at 8am pacific, 11am eastern)

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Closer to home, Mourinho has submitted his squad list to UEFA for the group stages of the Champions League. Thanks to some fancy footwork in the front office, the squad has been paired down enough that no one has to stay home. The only player not to make the list this year is Marko Arnautovic and he hasn’t recovered from his foot injury so cant play anyway.

A list:

Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni
Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Lucio, Maicon, Materazzi, Samuel, Chivu, Santon
Midfielders: Stankovic, Quaresma, Thiago Motta, Sneijder, Muntari, Vieira, Cambiasso, Obi*, Mancini, Esposito*
Strikers: Eto’o, Suazo, Milito, Balotelli

*youth players

B list: Belec (goalkeeper), Krhin (midfielder), Caldirola (midfielder), Destro (striker), Tremolada (midfielder)

CLUB FRIENDLIES

Sad but true, not everyone got called up for international duty. So those who had to stay home wont be too bored, Mouinho has scheduled a friendly against Swiss side Lugano on Saturday, the 5th. The game will take place at the stadio “Cornaredo” in Lugano at 5:30pm (local time; 8:30am pacific, 11:30am eastern).

Quaresma, Samuel, and Mancini play keep away while the kids look on

What was left of the squad trained today at La Pinetina. To bulk the squad a bit, Mourinho had to draft a few players from the academy: Cristiano Biraghi (midfielder), Simone Dell’agnello (forward), Giulio Donati (deffense), Marek Kysela (defense), Samuele Longo (forward), Sebastian Carlsen (midfielder), and Andrea RomanĂ² (midfielder). Marko Arnautovic also joined the group – he must be feeling better – while Thiago Motta and Cambiasso had therapy and individual sessions.

Wow, after all the drama of the summer market and the high emotions of the Derby, this all just seems so dull and pedestrian. Oh well, this is all we have so we might as well make the best of it. At least the Brazil-Argentina game should be good.

FORZA INTER

Oh, and Happy 30th Birthday, Julio Cesar!

And apparently he got injured during this match and didn’t return.

Wesley Sneijder has left Grolsch Veste Enschede on crutches. The midfielder fell just before the end of the friendly match with an injury to his right ankle. Sneijder is right now in the hospital.

“He heard a crack in his ankle and he is currently in the hospital,” said coach Bert van Marwijk.

    Updated:

Tuttomercatoweb now says that it was a knee injury, the severity of the damange will be revealed in coming hourse and he will be evaluated by Inter’s doctor, probably Combi. The Dutch midfielder arrived from Real Madrid recently is extremely difficult at this point to find himself playing against Parma on Sunday

Sneijder to remain with the National team.

Wesley Sneijder did scare the whole world of the Nerazzurri. Tests indicated that nothing is broken. The giagnosis is: a strong blow to his right ankle. The midfielder will remain with the National team and will be regularly available to Mourinho on his return to Milan.

A bit of good news? Hopefully…

My stomach turned over when I read Football Italia’s version – their article said it was potentially serious, and that he heard something snap. If that’s true, its ligament damage and he could be out for up to a month. Awaiting some more news, hopefully something from Inter.it.

A big sigh of relief for Inter and all its fans, there is nothing broken for Wesley Sneijder. It was in the 77th minute in a friendly game with Japan in Enschede, where the Inter player, hit hard by an opponent and he had to come out on a stretcher. He was then transported immediately to the hospital. The player then was subjected to a number of tests, which, fortunately for the team of Van Marwijk, but also especially for Inter, have ruled out any types of fracture.

Inter have received the communication by the medical staff of the Dutch National team. Sneijder for now will remain in Holland and with the coach, and between tomorrow night and Monday will undergo further tests to see if the ligaments are involved. But after the first moment of great fear around the player, Sneijder could be recovered already for thet game on Wendesday with Scotland and against Parma on Sunday.

I say keep the good news coming…

I just heard the news about Sneijder, his injury has been confirmed not be too serious, correct?
As soon as I saw the headline about it on t.v I ran over here to check out any news about the injury, its the LAST thing I need to hear about right now! We need him against Barca, we can’t have both him and Cambiasso out for that match!

Did anyone see Arna’s first game? Any impressions on his fitness and over all playing? LOL, I find it ironic that the 3 goals came from Mancini, Vieira and Quaresma, the 3 players that drive insane most of the time!

The game wasn’t televised live. I did read that it would be shown on the Inter Channel later in the evening, though, so maybe some kindhearted youtuber will post highlights. Everyone keep your eyes open.

Just cuz Sneijder didn’t break anything doesn’t mean it’s not serious. I’d rather have a break than severe ligament damage. We are far from out of the woods at this point. This comes from someone who lost a solid 18 months of their career to ankle ligament tearing. I could play after 2 months, but just wasn’t the same for so long after that despite six hours of rehab work a week.
