Napoli 1-0 Inter: We Should Be Ashamed Of Ourselves

By: Johonna | April 27th, 2009

Dont just stand there, DO SOMETHING
First, let me say that I am not one of those fans who thinks my team is unbeatable. Quite the opposite, in fact. I think that on any given day, no matter what the statistics say or how a team looks “on paper,” any team can beat any other team. That is one of the things I love about football. That said, my problem with this game is not the outcome per se – Napoli deserved to beat Inter on Sunday, no question. My problem is that Inter did not play up to their potential. We played a sloppy, overconfident, terrible match with no passion and no will to win. Mostly, I am disappointed with the overall attitude of the team. It was disgraceful. If you are going to go down, at least go down fighting.

Even the players knew that something was off. After the game, Chivu said:

“We didn’t do our best tonight but we don’t know why and we can’t explain it. This is football, it’s made up of episodes. Some days there’s something that goes in your favour and on other days there’s not. It all went against us today.”

And from our captain:

“We have to be honest with ourselves. We didn’t play our best football today but I want to reassure the fans. It’s easy to be negative after a defeat but we will regain the maximum concentration.”

The Small Rays of Sunshine

It would be easy to just write the whole game off, but the truth is, there were a few bright moments. I think, as a whole, the defense was not entirely crappy. Chivu and Samuel made some great interceptions, and I was, overall, happy with their performance.

Julio Cesar was ok. (Interestingly, he got the only “passing grade” from the fans.) He wasn’t stupendous – but he was still serviceable. I kind of wish he had actually tried to stop that goal instead of remaining rooted to his line, but I can live with his game.

I know that I will probably catch a whole lot of flack for this, but I think Balotelli did ok. True, he allowed them to wind him up, which is his huge shortcoming, but I thought he was much better about tracking back and playing for the team. He is also our best corner taker.

As a match, I thought the first half was promising for Inter. We had all the possession and forced a few saves from the keeper – it wasn’t stellar, but it wasn’t nearly as craptacular as our second half.

Oh, and this little quip from Daddy Moratti which actually made me snort:

Berlusconi said that they (Milan) would be close to Inter now if Adriano hadn’t scored with his hand in the derby…
“I’ll have to count Milan’s penalties first, then we’ll talk about it…”

The Bad

Vieira, Vieira, Vieira, VIEIRA. Sure, he used to be good – quite recently, in fact – and he is tall, but come on! What on earth will take for him to get benched? He was so bad that I dont even know where to start. Of course, Mancini wasn’t all that great either. Neither was Cruz, for that matter. Now I am just depressing myself…. Basically, most everyone if not outright sucked, played far below par. Blech

The Aftermath

And joy of joys, we go into the Lazio match with no Balotelli and no Stankovic – both are suspended after picking up cards on Sunday. If Muntari does not recover – well… I dont want to think about that. This must be what it feels like to be a Roma or Juve fan: a chunk of your good players suspended or injured and losing to teams you really aught to beat. Brrrrrh.

Clearly, I am not in the most lighthearted of moods. I guess I will cut this short before I drag you all down with me.

Now, where did I put that Zoloft….

FORZA INTER

I bring this out again only to show what could happen if the squad doesn’t get their heads out of their collective asses. Consider it a caution against thinking that seven points ahead are enough.
Inter\'s 17th Scudetto hopes sink beneath the waves.

inter can be just as good if we get two world class center backs like vidic and bruno alves, and get diego and tevez to help boost our attack, and maybe get a center midfielder of some sort, someone who has the influence of cambiasso and the dribbling skills of zanetti, I heard francesco bolzoni might be inter’s next great defensive midfielder, this is my dream team for inter

    4-3-1-2

Julio Cesar-Santon-B. Alves-Vidic-Maicon-Bolzoni-Cambiasso-Zanetti-Diego-Tevez-Ibra, with a formation like that we would be unstoppable

^ vidic is never going to inter not at least while he’s still on his current level. i’d rather go for chivu-samuel and signing santacroce. here;s my take: 4-3-3/4-3-1-2
    j.cesar
    -maicon,chivu,samuel,santon-
-zanetti,cambiasso,either one of hamsik or d’agostino or inler-
    -g.rossi/rosina
    -balotelli,ibra
    and acquafresca on the bench.

While I applaud everyone’s foresight and planning for next season, I am more worried about this weekend. Does anyone else think it is strange that Mou is having his press conference a day early? Usually he has them the day before the match. This week, he is having it on Thursday. Also, there is the distinct lack of training photos on the Inter web page.

I guess that fun and games are over.

we need more match winners than Ibra. Sure Cambaisso and Zanetti are great players but we need players that can decide a match like Ibra. We need 2-3 of them. We hoped that Quaresma and Mancini would do they for us. WE need to sell Mancini. He has lost his confidence. I don’t know about Quaresma. I want to sell him but if we can only get 5~7 million(his current value I presume) I rather not sell him. Many players struggle in his first years. Quaresma is a type of player that needs confidence to perform well.

It looks like we are in Boot Camp mode. No media in and Mo is trying to get the press commitments out of the way so that he can put in extra practice on Friday. I bet we are spending at least one day on the Meazza field training.

I don’t want to give up on Quaresma yet. I have seen players take a long time to get acclimated. Knee jerk reactions can only hinder the project. We should keep with the plan – get younger, slowly mold ourselves into the various 4-5-1/4-3-3 players and continue working at a high level. Quaresma fits 2 out of those three criteria right now. It would be a shame for us to give up on the investment before it has a chance to have results.

A win this weekend does us a lot of good. 7 points up – at least, if we win – up with 4 games/12 possible points left sets a nice stage. The magic number becomes any accumulation of 6 points in 4 games.

I am especially interested to see Juve and Fiorentina. Both will be fighting tough. Roma? Who even knows about them anymore. They are so inconsistent.

MAD: Sorry had to take care of some stuff out of town, so couldn’t join you last Thursday. Tried calling the Distillery to pass on the message, but their voicemail is way too complicated for me…

I come back, and see Inter haven’t won in 3 games. Thank God for the 7 point cushion though. Sounds like we were really terrible against Napoli, and what’s worse both Balo and Deki are suspended. Mou needs to come up with a good working plan for this weekend.

Looks like the war of words between Mourinho and Ambrosini is heating up! The fact remains the same, neither Juve nor AC is winning any trophy this season. They should take that to heart and just shut up, and prepare better next season. We had also gone through the same before; it doesn’t make you feel any better arguing and reminiscing “what if’s”.

Juve’s appeal against stadium ban was reversed by the High Court today. What a shame! I remember in the letter submitted by the Juve ultras they won’t even call him by his surname Balotelli, but referred to him as Burwah. It would be terrible precedent should the court uphold this reversal…

And Jo: Berlusconi is a tool. In last year’s TIME’s 100 most powerful/influential figures, he wrote a glowing tribute to George W. Bush. Shows a lack of class!

Okay, everyone who is surprised raise a hand.

If they and Milan won’t be punished for actual match fixing, then why would we expect them to be held accountable for being disgusting humans now?

We have already given them a pass for that with the light Calciopoli sentence. To punish them now for being a blight on humanity would be inconsistent.

Sam, well said “we need more match winners than Ibra.” Inter won’t get far with only 1 real striker. Balotelli is good but young. Perhaps he can be cloned :-) Wonder what Torres is doing next season?

Ya, Alessio, that is a little naive. Mario was raised by the Balotellis – that is his family. To call him by another name – no matter what it says on his paperwork – is to deny that relationship, and, by extension, his Italian nationality.

Do you really believe some of the stuff you type or are you just trying to get a rise?

Sometimes it’s entertaining, Johonna. If anything, I think it’s a knock on the institution of adoption, not racism.

I wonder why he never legally changed his name, though.

Because he was not allowed to until he was 18, Alessio.

It is my understanding that he has changed his name now that he has reached his majority and is officially Italian and the Balotelli’s son.

A knock on the institution of adoption? Now you must be joking.
