Oh Ricky You’re So Fine

By: Johonna | September 1st, 2008

You’re so fine you blow my mind, Hey Ricky!
Yep, after all the will-he wont-he drama this summer, it is official. HE WILL! Well, at least for 18.6 million euros, Pele’s card, and some performance-based bonuses he will.

Meet our the newest Nerazzurro: Ricardo Quaresma

You have no idea how happy this picture makes me. Sure, we had to drop a huge load of cash and give up Pele in trade, but that is what rich owners are for – buying the bling.

I know, I should have done some review of the Sampdoria game on Saturday (we drew, 1-1), but I started watching YouTube videos of our new number 77 and, well, he is just a whole lot more exciting.

Still, for those of you who could not watch the game, I found these highlights.

All in all, it was an ok game, a C+. We had the expected problems with our patchwork defense. Luckily, though, Cassano was too nervous to take full advantage – only one of his strikes was on-target. Also, I was happily surprised at Materazzi’s performance. Ibrahimovic finally scored – that will do wonders for his confidence. It was disappointing to concede the goal, but this was Marco’s first full game since last spring and Cambiasso, while proving competent, is not the same as having Chivu, Samuel, or even Nico back there. Once we straighten out the mess in defense, hopefully errors like the one that led to the goal will be few and far between.

So there you go, a not-so-stellar first day but a very exciting end to the summer mercato. I know, we have lots left to discuss – Champions League squad lists (who did and didnt make it), international call-ups, lingering injuries…. There will be time for all that tomorrow. First, lets just bask a little little more in the dazzling light that is Ricky Quaresma:

And remember, now that Mourniho has won the Italian Super Cup, he not just a Champion, but a Super Champion.

Ciao ciao Ragazzi. Ci vediamo a presto.

We had talked about contract years here recently and I found this handy chart. It’s a year old, but it’s really interesting. Salaries are included. What Vieira is making is a crime. Kaka and Totti are the top two in Serie A near as I can figure.

whoops, yup Zanetti on the right. Just as good!! Our left side is pretty damn good too, all working with Cambiasso (I figure when the team is healthy) and Ibra in the middle.

Hurry up and get fit Centre backs!!

I know Ibra is #1 now, MAD. But yeah, poor Roma on their tiny budget only have the 2nd-highest paid player in all of Serie A. He’s 3rd now behind Kaka and Ibra, but still.

There’s quite a bit of controversy over salaries here, with Milan in particular saying that the Gazzetta figures were completely wrong, while at the same time refusing to provide any evidence to back up that claim.

With that in mind, I would use the figures with some caution (though I tend to think that they are basically accurate, at least in terms of relative salaries).

Ursus, would the Juve figures be correct? I figure as a SpA we have to divulge that kind of info to stockholders, right?

Ale, as publicly traded companies Juve (and Roma and Lazio) are required to disclose more detailed financial information than other clubs, but that doesn’t include individual salary figures. An overall salary figure would have to be disclosed, as would the terms of any individual transaction that could have a material impact on the share price, but for a club of Juve’s size I would expect that to include only major transfers and contract signings. Likely in the case of ADP or Buffon, much less so for Molinari or Marchisio.

Actrually I was only using the charts as a guide for contract length. I figured that there had been significant changes with salaries and that they were out of date anyway.

With the three signings this summer, I was looking at when we could divest ourselves of some of the older players such as my favorite whipping boy Dacourt. I also have a hard time watching Vieira for any length of time and I wish that we could get rid of him sooner than when his contract actually runs out. I was not real high on his signing in the first place. Crespo, I wasn’t a real fan the first time around.

I think that we might be on the look out next signing period for defense men in their prime instead on the wrong side of thirty one. We know, I think, that Moratti and Mo’ both have a reputation for shopping, and that’s where I see the next big project after this season’s Midfield/Attack Reconstruction.

Even contract length can be a bit of a mystery here, as the confusion over Crespo’s situation demonstrates. “Transparency” is not a value that one associates with Italian football.

Dacourt was actually reasonably effective in the matches I saw him play last season. Unfortunately, he is rather fragile, which is a particularly serious affliction for someone in his position.

Mourinho and Branco will definitely be looking to rejuvenate the defence, perhaps as early as January. That said, there aren’t exactly lots of candidates on the market at the moment, as the Azzurri’s difficulties at the back have demonstrated.

Did u guys hear what Mourinho said when reporters asked him: ” In what position can RQ play in”

“He can play on the right, they left, the bench and the stands” hahaha so secretive. Mourinho was a good choice for you guys, he can handle egos (refer back to Chelsea)

Gotta admit, little jealous that u got RQ, I have always been a fan of his.

Well, both Crepo’s and Dacourt’s contract expire in 2009. They are out next summer if not sooner. And I agree, when Dacourt was not injured, he was pretty good – just like Vieira (and I had no idea we were paying him so much!).

As for defenders, I can not think of a single player that I saw and thought “I wish he played for Inter.” Maybe Mei and Santon will turn out to be great and we will have to look no further.

So, does anyone actually know what happens to Obinna now? Will he stay and train with Everton’s reserve team while he waits for another hearing or what?

What I don’t understand about Crespo is I thought he was on a 2-year loan from Chelski, and this summer it expired as well as his contract with Chelsea.

That’s exactly the confusion I was referring to.

It appears the deal was extended for a year at some point without it ever really being reported.

BTW, as if anyone needed further evidence of Johonna’s perspicacity, Mourinho has called both Mei and Santon in for training with the first team* this week.

    * or what’s left of it; there are 9 guys on international duty and Adriano has been excused to deal with some “bureaucratic matters” (I can personally vouch for the fact that foreigners here need time off for that).

No, Crespo was on loan. When the loan ended (last year), Inter gave him a two year contract:

As for my perspicacity, Santon and Mei are on the first team squad list on the Inter web page. All I can claim is the ability to read. But thanks anyway!

Does anyone know what the quality of these jerseys on ebay is like? I was going to buy one from here but then I had second thoughts and decided to order from a store.

Shitty, brian. As the saying goes, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. I usually buy one Juve jersey per year but last year I bought two because I bought the first on eBay, decided to get a real one after. They look mostly accurate, the feel is way off and it’s usually printed logos instead of an actual ironed on one. If you’ve ever been to Italy, a lot of street vendors sell extremely similar ones for dirt cheap.

Purportedly a group of ManCity fans are having them made for Robinho’s debut (against Chelsea).

The logistics of the counterfeit jersey market are quite impressive. It generally takes less than 20 days for the first knockoffs of a new major signing to appear at stalls here in Milano; there is already a glut of Ronaldinho 80s, and I expect the Quaresma ones to arrive shortly.

The only thing that is handy about cheap ebay jerseys is that you can ditch them when/if they become cursed. That is, if you happen to wear them on a game day and the team looses or someone is horribly injured. Clearly, the jersey is cursed (or the team would have won) so clearly it can never ever be worn during a game again. If you only spent $20 on the shirt, no big deal. I can just throw them away if I want (although I wonder if it would be better to burn them – sort of like retiring a flag or something).

I have a very sentimental Materazzi jersey that I never wear during games so it can never be cursed. It only goes on after the game in celebration. Marco only gets good juju!
