Our Boys at Home and Other News
By: Johonna | June 8th, 2008While there are still no movements on the Inter mercato front, there are a few other tidbits I thought might be of interest. Also, true to my word, I thought I would do a little run-down of Inter players who have been called-up to their national teams.
Argentina — We have 4 players on the Argentina national team: Burdisso, Cambiasso, Cruz, and Zanetti. With help from a Burdisso goal, they handily beat Mexico (4-1) in their last friendly. The second friendly, against the USA, is starting as I write this. Burdisso and Cruz are starting. My big question is why is Nico so much better for Argentina than for Inter? World cup qualifiers start next week for Argentina.
Brazil – We have three players on the Brazilian National Team: Julio Cesar, Maicon, and Adriano. Brazil has played two friendlies recently, and are looking forward to the qualifier games against Paraguay and Argentina next week. The first friendly was against Canada where all three of our boys played passably, in my opinion, though a bit too forward. Brazil was not so lucky in the second friendly and they lost against Venezuela. Adriano started that game, and by the accounts that I could find, he did not shine. Maicon was subbed in for the second half and Julio Cesar did not play.
Columbia – Nelson Rivas has been called up for the Columbian national team for their WC qualifiers against Ecuador and Peru. I hope he plays well for his team!
France – Vieira has returned to full training ahead of tomorrow’s game against Romania although it is still not clear whether he will start. He picked up a thigh strain early on and missed both friendlies. Hopefully he can represent his country without jeopardizing his fitness for club play next season.
Italy — As everyone has so thoughtfully pointed out, Marco Materazzi is Inter’s only contribution to the Azzurri. It is thought he will be part of the starting team tomorrow, partnered with Barzagli. I would like to write more here, but really, I dont think I can do it in a civil manner. If you read the Italy Euro 2008 page it is pretty clear that Materazzi is not one of Chris’s favorite players. Since I find myself wanting to mount personal attacks – I am a little protective – I will just walk away.
Romania — Our very own Christian Chivu is the captain of the Romanian national team. He seems to have recovered from the shoulder problem that was troubling him at the end of the season. I am looking forward to the game tomorrow morning – I think they could well take France. Unfortunately, they will, of course, fall to Italy.
Sweden — Ibrahimović did not look so hot at the friendly against Ukraine – at least not in the grainy highlight videos I could find. Of course, national team duty may not be his thing. According to the UEFA profile, he has not scored in an international for Sweden since October 2005! Yikes. Also, the knee is still bothering him and he is unlikely to play the full 90 against Greece.

Honduras — Suazo just helped Honduras beat Puerto Rico in a world cup qualifier 4-0. He scored 2 goals. Good job! Goal.com thinks Inter may make Suazo part of an offer to Roma for Aquilani. With Balotelli being a little brat (see below), we may decide to keep Suazo after all.
In other news
It seems that Balotelli and Inter are having some difficulty coming to terms on his new contract. According La Gazzetta, Balotelli wants something on par with Alexandre Pato who earns €1.2 million a year at AC Milan. Right now he makes €60,000 – pretty good for a 17 year old. Balotelli is quoted as saying that he “doesn’t feel Inter inside (Non sento l’Inter dentro),” but apparently he still wants a 5-year contract. Goal.com says that Chelsea and Man U are interested. Boy, if he thought he didn’t get enough playing time at Inter, I don’t think either of those teams are right for him. Talk about your stiff competition!
In other Primavera news, Inter’s youth squad cam up against Sampdoria’s today in the youth-league final. Unfortunately, Inter lost 2-3, with a goal by Pedrelli and a converted penalty from Balotelli. The squad for this final included: Belec; Santon, D.Esposito, Federici, Fatic; Gerbo, Bolzoni, Pedrelli (Napoli 84); Balotelli, Ribas, Siligardi (Obi 65). I suspect we will be seeing some of these players next year.

Good job boys and congratulations Sampdoria!
More News
Mourinho is in Japan coaching an exhibition game but he has found a little time to speak to the press about Inter. He will not comment on any mercato rumors but he did say that Figo would be staying on another year.
Similarly, Marco says he would like to stay at Inter and finish out his career.
Inter and Cagliari could not come to terms on a transfer fee for Acquafresca so it will go to sealed bids. I really hope we can hang on to him – I think he will make a good addition to the team in 1 or 2 years time.
Oh, and here is something to warm the cockles of my heart: “It is absolutely impossible that Milan play in next season’s Champions League,” said UEFA spokesman, William Gaillard.
There was some talk of AC Milan taking a spot vacated by either Porto or CSKA Sofia who have been disqualified for match fixing and accounting irregularities. Instead of the vacated spots going to the next in line in Bulgaria or Portugal, it would go to the highest UEFA ranked team not already in the competition: Milan. It turns out, though, that: “The participants are not chosen based on the highest co-efficient but on the number of teams a country is allowed to enter.” (Gaillard, see above)
So no Champions League for Milan!
Ciao, Ragazzi.
Forza Azzurri, Forza Italia!

ummmmmm… did anyone else see that absolute beaut by Zlatan “i am Great” Ibrahimagic today? jesus, that was amazing!!!! thank god we have him and no one else does =P
and lol @ Karagounis’ swipe at zlatan’s golden balls

I saw the Zlatan shot. It was also a great move by the coach to get him out of there and rest him. Greece looked toothless and a goal at that time looked good enough to ensure at least a draw.
I was just emailed Chris’ rants regarding the Hollad Italy game and I subsequenty read most of the comments. I expect the Italian press to go crazy because there so many papers devorted to sports to sell daily.
Why are people here going nuts? Does everyone expect Italy to win every game they play? Bad games do happen. It’s not a reason to throw a hissy fit. I am willing to bet that most of those people aren’t even Italian Nationals, so why the crazyness?
In the 1982 WC, Italy looked bad during the group stage and people thought we wouldn’t make it to the knock-out round. We may or may not make it to the next round but it’s just the Euro’s. It’s not even the WC. Last WC we tied the Americans in the group stage and won it all.

U guys buying both Mancini and Quaresma for Jose’s 433?
I see Deco playing playmaker in the 3 man midfield surrounded by Cambiasso and another cdm, like Lampard did with essien and makalele.
Mancini—Zlatan—Quaresma
Zanetti—Deco—Cambiasso

Zanetti likes to play at the back now. Also, I dont want Mancini. I would rather have Aquilani. Mancini is just too inconsistent.

But ur manager wants Mancini. U wont get near Aquilani.
Zanetti wants to play over Maicon at rb, or Chivu and Maxwell at lb?

Dont know. I dont know if we will keep Maicon yet. I dont think we will get Aquilani either, but I like to hope and there has certainly been a lot of press about the possibility today. I suppose it depends on just how strapped for cash Roma really is.

Well, one of my transfer wishes won’t be possible. Christian Maggio has inked a deal with Napoli.

I almost posted a long maudlin rant about our mercato hopes and wishes last night. Basically, we had all of these yummy Portuguese players practically sown up in our pockets and along comes Chelsea. I cannot help that think that appointment of Scolari as Chelsea’s coach will impact our chances of signing Deco, Charvalho and Quaresma.
And then you have Juve and Milan snarffing up everyone like they are at a $1.99 buffet.
It is all very depressing.
I was willing to take Mancini if he came with Aquilani but on his own? Pah.
I am looking for the bright side, really. Perhaps Aguero. He seems like a good kid.

and that is sewn.
Man, so depressed I cannot even spell!

Didn’t Inter promise like a 100-year signing? Would you consider Lampard to be that epic? Seems like with Scolari+Deco in, he’s likely to head out.
Then again, maybe to the coach who bought+grew him.
Posted from

No. I do not consider Lampard to be that epic. I am dubious about English players in Italy. It is a crap shoot as far as I can tell – they are either ok or they fail spectacularly.
Usually they just cannot hack Italy – the fans, the press, the game, none of it (or at least that is what John Foot says). It scares the bejesus out of me.

I am not worried about Scolari being at Chelsea. He’ll make a fool of himself. What has he done? Won the World Cup, I know. Ok fine but lets be serious, after picking that squad anyone of use could have managed Brazil to Victory. Even at that, just look at his track record as a club manager. He must own the record for managing the most clubs in the shortest period of time. Most of his club jobs have only lasted one season, some not even and only one or two going longer. He’ll be in and out of Chelsea faster than we could point a finger and laugh the poeple who follow him there. People think Mourinho is arrogant?
I really only want Quaresma and Deco. If they were smart they would understand where the better football is. I don’t want Amantino either. I can’t stand him. I always already forced to like Maniche this past season. I am sure we’ll land something some time. I wanted 4 or 5 changes, we are told we are getting 2 or 3. I hope at least one of them is Quaresma.
Ona side note – Absolutely brilliant effort by Croatia today. Well done by them.

Ya, but they all luuuuuuuv him (that is, the players on the Portuguese national team). Also, the owner of Chelsea is the richest person in professional sports. He can offer them whatever their little hearts desire.
$$$$ + Favorite Coach = no Deco and Quaresma to Inter!Blech. And to top it off, Seattle is having record-breaking horrible weather – Norway and Siberia are having nicer weather than here.

If Lamaprd is our “100 year” signing I might puke.

We’ll see. Hopefully these players realize that if they don’t win anything in their very 1st season with Scolari, the guy they luuuuv so much will be out of work and the egg will be on their face!! Chelsea and its managers do not have a very good working relationship.

quaresma said he has signed for a big club. i really hope its us. but after the luis announcement i think its chelsea. the RQ quote came too soon after scolari’s announcement. so we could forget about those him.
i wouldnt mind lampard. but, if we get kun that would awesome!!! i really think we’re goona make an effort to get sergio. kun + mardonna + girlfriend + $ = Inter. hopefully he is the 100 year signing.

I must have missed the 100 year signing quote.
Rumor, and supply your own salt has Deco still free and us going after Konko:

Anyone else hear about this? Does anyone have any details?
“Manchester United have completed the signing of promising Roma youngster, Davide Petrucci, to the fury of the club and the local press”

From the Man U webpage, reposed from the Daily Telegraph:
“United will pay Petrucci £95,000 a year and will cover the cost of regular flights home to Italy. The deal is the maximum permissible offer for a youth-team player. Roma will receive around £200,000 in compensation but the move has caused fury. Petrucci, who comes from the San Basilio suburb of Rome, has been compared to a young Francesco Totti and could have made the first-team squad next year.”

Wow, what a different game today than monday. Makes me think that the line up on monday- tall and defensive was point to specifically defeat the Dutch.
Thanks Johonna. I appreciate the post.
Todays smaller and offensive line up was a nice contrast to Romania playing the counter.
Some thoughts on what I saw, if anyone cares or not.
Del Piero: Look, Romania was playing back, but I think he did a good job pressuring them. He set some people up and he took some shots. First guessing, I thought he needed to be in the first game, but that’s as far as I will go.
Chiellini; I thought that he really grew a backbone this season. In previous years I thought he was too soft. He has no speed, or real ball skills, but he was willing to put his big nose in the mix, and I can’t fault him for that… after all I like Matrix.
Panucci: The quicker he gets off the field the happier I’ll be. My father and a close friend, have a real soft spot for Panucci because he played for AC, agreed that Panucci has had a horrible Euro. I was happy he was left off the WC team 2006, I will be happy that he won’ t make WC 2010
Zambrotta: Horrible, horrible Euro. He was on the spot for two Dutch goals on monday and he brain farts on the back line today. His offense wasn’t bad… but was he really that much better than Oddo?
Grosso: Massive game today. I think I saw some defense from Grosso in addition to his running up the flank.
De Rossi: Everyone was so high on him. I have never seen him have the kind of game he is hyped to have had all the time, and I have seen him in the Lazio derbies (last year and this year) all the CL stuff and the National team stuff.
Offensively: He completed some passes, he almost over shot the whole team on a corner (thanks Chiellini) and managed to doink Del Piero on the arm when he took his best shot. Oh yeah, he also was dispossessed twice and was so flummoxed by Mutu’s defense (!?) that he dove scores of 6.2, 7.0, 6.4, 4.0 and 6.7 at my house.
Defensively: He looked like a lost little boy at about the 15th minute as Romania passed a triangle around him. He made his first defensive win at about the 58th minute and his second at the 72nd minute. Not good. He did deflect a shot and he got a yellow… his third in 2 tournaments, by the way.
Could that guy be a little over rated… I think so…
Perrota: I normally think that he is pretty useless, but he played well today. Not great, but well.
Cassano: If he can keep his head screwed on right, he is talented. He put some pretty work in.
Buffon: I think he was late off his line for the goal, but Mutu messed up his PK and Buffon made him pay. Can’t ask must more than that.
Pirlo: Still the creative leader, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was his last go with the National Team.
I hope that this Euro will highlight the need for some new and younger players.

I forgot to add that De Rossi blew a chest high header from about 5 meters out.

Well the Netherlands and Romania to advance out of the, so called, group of death… I know its not “Official” yet but it will be Tuesday. I have every reason to believe the Dutch will allow Romania to win. The Ducth’s 1st place position cannot change and it would be to their advantage to have Italy and France knocked out. They will not risk injury, start mostly back ups and they will not fatigue themselves trying to get a result out of the Romanians. If, by some Miracle, Romania fails to score ONE goal in 90 minutes there is hope id we beat France. One goal for Romania and its done.

Ibra scores again. I hope it bodes well for us that he is continuing to play well throughout the summer.

I am trying to get worked up by this whole Azzurri debacle but, tell you all the truth, I am having too much fun watching the tournament. That Switzerland Turkey game was CRAZY!
So we dont win (and when I say we, I mean Italy). So long as we put in a good showing and play to the best of our abilities, I think I will be happy. That said, Toni was NEVER offside and that was in NO WAY a penalty.
I have to say, I am really looking forward to the Netherlands v Portugal.
