Palermo 0-2 Inter: That Takes Us to 27!
By: Johonna | November 17th, 2008
Three points…Clean Sheet…Top of the table – That is what I like to see come Monday morning. All in all, we played an pretty good game – not our best performance, but not our worst either. A full week of training paid off and this win was far more convincing than the lucky break against Udninese last week.
It was not all sunshine, though. I was not a happy camper for that first half. The team seemed sleepy and out of sorts. We were showing far too much of the ball to Palermo – every time we got near their goal, we lost possession. The movement up the field was good, but no follow through. We conceded far too many corners – one of which was quite scary (thank you again Julio Cesar), and allowed far too much space between the forwards and the defense.
That is not to say that Inter did not have a couple chances in the first half. We had a pretty good corner punched away. Ibra was close to opening the scoring at 27 minutes with a powerful low shot that forced Jimmy Fontana into a gut-reaction save. On the other side, JC did his part by making a nice diving save on a low effort by Migliaccio just before the half. Mou most have had some words for the boys in the dressing room, because the second half was all about Inter.
See for yourself:
I really like that little ball-roll that Ibra does to position the ball for the first goal. I tell you what, he can hold a ball better than anyone in Serie A. But I digress…
The formation for this game was a little hinky (IMO):
Julio Cesar;
Maicon, Cordoba, Samuel, Maxwell;
Zanetti, Vieira (Burdisso 87), Cambiasso;
Muntari (Stankovic 65);
Cruz (Mancini 77), Ibrahimovic.
It was a defensive formation that was a little hampered by Muntari and Cruz. Muntari, as he is just coming off injury and does not appear to be fully match fit quite yet, and Cruz, who just was never where he needed to be. I dont think this game was supposed to be the Ibra show, but given that Cruz was never there to meet Ibra’s crosses, what choice did we have? Cruz just did not look able to keep pace with the game. I think that at his age, he is best used as a super sub. There is no denying that he can score, but he just doesnt have the legs that he used to.
Mancini came in halfway through the second half, and, while he was much better in terms of positioning, he was not able to disentangle himself from Fontana and the Palermo defenders to finish. I still think Mancini has promise. He has a good sense of where he should be on the pitch, he just needs to work on his nerves and actually putting the ball in the net.
Samuel had another great game. He is back and just as good as ever. I was surprised to see him on the pitch as his wife Cecilia just gave birth to his third child, a boy they named Francisco, the night before. The family is reportedly doing well. Samuel dedicated the victory to his son and to all his family. (Ok everyone, all together: AWWWWW).
There is one piece of bad news to come from this game: Cordoba picked up another yellow so he will be suspended for the Juventus game next week. At least no one was injured. This leaves us with the option of either Marco or Nico next week. Personally, I would prefer to see Marco. He is not being called for international duty, he had a pretty good game against Anorthosis, and he has not been knocked unconscious this season. Nico, on the other hand, has none of that going for him.
But we can deal with next weekend later.
First, we have these stupid midweek international friendlies. Quite a few of our players have been called up this week:
Brazil: Adriano, Julio Cesar, Maicon and Mancini
Argentina: Burdisso and Zanetti
France: Vieira
Nigeria: Obinna,
Serbia: Stankovic,
Italy U21: Balotelli, Bolzoni, and Santon.
Ibrahimovic gets to stay home, and I guess Maradona does not like Cambiasso. All the better for Inter, I say. I just hope that Maxwell continues to fly under Dunga’s radar.
Luckily Argentina is playing in Scotland and Brazil in Portugal so there will not be a lot of travel time for our South Americans. Unfortunately, Nigeria is playing in Columbia so Obinna may be a little jet lagged for Saturday’s game. For a full list of the upcoming International Friendlies, try here.
In other Inter news, all our academy teams did well this weekend.

– Inter Primavera beat Milan’s youth team 2-1 (pictured above).
– Our U16 team, the Allievi Regionali, are 12 for 12 with this 5-1 win over Monza.
– The Giovanissimi Regionali, our U14, is at the top of the table with a 3-0 away win over Pavia.
– The U13 team are also at the top of the table after a 5-0 trashing of Lumezzane.
Good job boys! We are proud of you! All this talent will hopefully translate to many years of good standings in the Serie A. I want that second star!
Allora Ragazzi, ascoltate a Mourinho: “Ora siamo davanti e possiamo stare tranquilli per qualche giorno, senza pensare alla Juventus.”
FORZA INTER
glad to see the scarves are back!

I gotta envy international managers a bit. Yeah, tough work and intense scrutiny but what do they do when there aren’t internationals? Fly around the country and watch huge games! (Of course, solely to monitor players)

So far our November of DEATHHHHHH has gone:
Win Reggina
Draw Champions League away
Win Udinese
Win Palermowe still have:
Juventus home
Champions League home
Napoli homeand then Lazio away the first week in December.
Best I can see is a draw with Juve, for reasons I have stated earlier.
I can see us beating Panathinaikos to advance CL unbeaten.
Napoli could have any one of three outcomes.
I think we can beat Lazio.Chievo home and Siena away round out the time before the winter break.
Cagliari home and Atalanta away conclude the first half.7 games to survive + our bi-yearly screwing by Juve and friends until the first half of the season ends. Went by too quickly.

The match with Juventus is Definitely a match in which 3 out comes are very possible. Our Defense is better, their overall attack might be better but that depends soley on our forwards. In the midfield I think Muntari and Momo cancel eachother out. Those 2 should be red carded before we play 20 minutes.
We will send Javier out to deal with and slap around Nedved. Cambiasso can hold and create in the middle and Viera will just police the midfield and try to service the forward when he can.
I think we see both teams go with a 4-4-2. A draw is the most likey outcome. The wild card: I am pretty sure Juventus will rely heavily on the offside trap and I hope we burn it once or twice.

I just dont want to think about it yet. I hate playing Juve. Besides, there is a whole week of training and International duty – who know what sort of mayhem will ensue.

“Those 2 should be red carded before we play 20 minutes.”
That was really funny… and yet very sad at the same time.

And quite possible, too.

For those who are interested in such things, Inter and Reggina were the only two clubs to win away last match-day. I think this is significant for us because we are going to have win on the road if we are going to stay ahead.
I am not a fan of Alberto Cerruti but if you can read Italian (I am not sure if google translator works on this page) he’s at least worth a look this week, if not cat box liner. Hey, it’s better than goal & Channel4, at least:

Haha MAD, they are just 2 wreck looses sometimes. Momo just flings whatever he can at you to try and get in your way and stop you. He has committed some the stupidest and funniest fouls I have ever seen. Sulley is no saint either. He has a knack for doing some dumb things too. It would be funny to see them be eachother’s assigments for the match. They won’t last 20 mins.
However they both have the ability to be outstanding on the pitch and can often be the difference makers between wins and losses. I think both players will have key roles on Saturday.

Just ran across this and thought I would share:
I love it when people say that Mourinho is overrated and they use Avram Grant as the example. This is from the Juve board. Feel free to have a laugh. I know I did.
“is Avram Grant getting another job? People lauded him for getting to the Champion’s League. Here’s my take: it just showed how overrated Mourinho was. Not too special when a man with zero major coaching experience can equalize (or better) your feats eh?”
Mourinho with Chelsea
FA Premier League: 2004-05, 2005-06 2 Titles
FA Cup: 2007 Winner
FA Community Shield: 2005 Winner
Carling Cup: 2005, 2007 2 CupsAvram Grant with Chelsea
English Premier League: 2007/2008 RUNNER UP
UEFA Champions League: 2007/2008 RUNNER UP
English League Cup: 2007/2008 RUNNER UPSomehow Avram Grant is equal to or a better manager than Jose… without having to actually win… ANY TITLE that Jose won!
Yay! I love days like this!

The sad thing is that Mou was trying to use Muntari as a creative midfielder in the first 45 minutes in Palermo.

No, the point wasn’t Grant’s a better coach, but if someone with zero experience can reach those heights with Chelski (CL final something Mourinho never did with all the money in the world…) then Mourinho doesn’t seem that special after all.

MAD you retard, titles like the community shield you must win the league the season before something that Mourinho failed to do. Another thing is that Grant wasent there for a complete season. Mourinho left Chelsea in somewhat of a crisis.

“CL final something Mourinho never did with all the money in the world”
True Say when he was at Chelsea! He also did the exact opposite & won the CL with relatively no money, compared to Chelsea, while at Porto. So really, what is your point?
I’ll apply your logic to this Saturdays Match. Juventus lost to Palemero 2-1. Inter beat Palermo 2-0. Inter is a lock to win the match. Its impossible for them to lose it.
You guys need to calm down. You keep pissing into the wind. Realx. It doesn’t bother us what you say about him. He was the self proclaimed special one before he go to Inter. We certainly don’t think he is anything special. Your digs are useless. He is definitely a good a manager and if you think otherwise you are foolish. He does have some faults but give him some time and let him build a team his way.
Adam, stop calling people retards when you make statements like you just made. Its very hypocritical. What exactly are you talking about?

the community shield is like the Supper Coppa anyway. A glorified friendly that means squat!

Well ursus, I think you have hit the nail on the head as to the reason we stutter a bit in transition from defence to offence. We lack someone creative to serve as a link between the two. We are mostly using Ibra to do double duty shooting and passing.
We had Figo at one point to be a creative type but he’s hasn’t been right for a while… since…

Avram Grant lost the Finals with Chelsea and won absolutely nothing the season he was coach. He obviously failed to impress anyone at Chelsea enough to keep the job.
Mourinho reached the Semi’s with Chelsea (lost a penalty shootout)– that would be the stage right before the Finals. Plus he won every title in England there is to win.
The quote was, “it just showed how overrated Mourinho was. Not too special when a man with zero major coaching experience can equalize (or better) your feats eh?”
And it made me laugh. Where is the equalizing? If your talking Champions League Avram made it one game further. And he lost everything else.
That’s being “overrated”? That’s, “equal or better”?
It’s really funny. Just like adam, “you must win the league the season before something that Mourinho failed to do”
I mean it’s really funny… Jose won the league title twice… ow ow my sides are hurting…

He obviously failed to impress anyone at Chelsea enough to keep the job.
Yeah. Zampa fires his coaches every 6 weeks. Doesn’t mean shit.
But yeah….Grant basically equalized Mourinho’s record. Look at his coaching career, couple Israeli squads and the national team. Woohoo. I bet Roberto Mancini could win titles with Chelski, particularly when ManUre was going stale.

Considering that Mancini just won the Golden Bench award, he must not be that bad of a coach. I am sure that he could win titles with Chelsea.
I still dont understand what all this hoopla is about. Mourinho is not the best coach in the world. He may not even be the best one in Italy – I really cant say. He is an interesting coach that is trying some interesting things with Inter. Right now we are holding our own in the Serie A and CL so he must be doing something at least half-way right.
Why is this whole Grant/Mourinho thing even an issue? In other words, who cares? The whole thing sort of smacks of “my dad can beat up your dad” to me. Aren’t we just a little more adult than that?

“Considering that Mancini just won the Golden Bench award, he must not be that bad of a coach”
maybe not ‘that’ bad but not at all good either. i’m certain that this was a sympathy award by his fellow colleagues partly for the way he was dealt with by inter at the end of last year and partly because he had to at least have had a one-time recognition for the three consecutive scudetti under his daycare.

You’re right.
I am sorry I voiced an opinion on something I read.

Had mourinho made chelsea the winning machine they were grant wouldn’t done shit , that chelsea squad could have managed itself thanx to that never say die attitude mourinho brought there ector cuper did a better job at inter than marcelo lippi so I guess cuper is a “better” coach than lippi eh ? Get real gents

Um, of course you are allowed an opinion and perfectly welcome to post it. I guess I just dont understand why Juventus fans need to argue that Grant is better than Mourinho. I mean, all Mou has to do is be better than Ranieri, yes? Who cares about Grant?

Is bernd schuster a better coach than fabio capello because his real madrid won la liga with way more ease than capello’s …..I think not , had it not been for the diciplined and winning mentality capello brought to real madrid bernd schuster’s team wouldn’t have won jack , same thing applies to the jose mourinho / avram grant thing , its not that easy to manage chelsea ask your current manager claudio ranieri

Figo thinks he will be ready to come back next week, although I dont really see the point.
Dacourt also used to be pretty good in the midfield. I have no idea what happened to him. I mean, I know he picked up the horrible injury last year, but I dont know why he has just never come back. Now he is on Mou’s infamous “sell list.”
I guess I will just trust in Mou.
