Panathinaikos v Inter

By: Johonna | September 15th, 2008

When: Tuesday, September 16, 8:45 local time (11:45am Pacific, 2:45pm Eastern)
Where: Olympic Stadium, Athens
How to Watch: PPV Live and On Demand here;
Streaming Here

This is going to be quite short. I am up to my eyes with real, honest to goodness work (the kind you actually get paid for), and besides, I really don’t know much about Panathinaikos.

US
Mou’s squad for the game:

Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.

Defenders: Cordoba, Zanetti, Maxwell, Maicon, Materazzi, Santon.

Midfielders: Figo, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Bolzoni, Quaresma.

Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Adriano, Balotelli.

This is pretty much what we were expecting except for Burdisso who suspended after being sent off last year against Liverpool.

Here is what UEFA.com has to say:

Iván Córdoba will be back in defense alongside Marco Materazzi, with Mourinho facing his biggest decision on the right side of midfield where Mario Balotelli, Luís Figo or Mancini could play. Much will depend on whether Mourinho opts for a 4-3-3 formation or a 4-4-2 although either way Zlatan Ibrahimović and Ricardo Quaresma will start – the latter having scored his first goal for the club in Saturday’s 2-1 victory against Calcio Catania.

Boy, wasn’t that informative? Basically, with our defense coming along, we need to work on actually scoring. In the last game, towards the end, Mancini and Ibra were beginning to get into the swing of things. Hopefully that understanding will carry over into this game and they will not have to start from scratch.

THEM

As far as I can tell, this is their squad:

Keepers: 1 Galinovic, 30 Tzorvas

Defenders: 2 Moon, 3 Sarriegi, 6 Melissis, 8 Goumas, 19 Gabriel, 23 Simao, 24 Vindra, 31 Spiropoulos, 32 Pantidos;

Midfielders: 4 Mattos, 10 Cleyton, 15 Silva, 17 Hristodoulopoulos, 21 Karagounis, 22 Tziolis, 27 Ivanschitz, 29 Nilsson;

Forwards: 5 Rukavina, 9 Souza, 14 Salpigidis

There is a pretty good run down of Pana from ESPN. I suggest you all read it.

Like Inter, Pana have a new coach with big ideas and a winning record in the champions League, Henk ten Cate. Among other clubs, ten Cate worked under Grant at Chelsea and at Barcelona under Rikaard. Players of note (according to ESPN) are midfielder Giorgos Karagounis (ex Inter 2003/4 & 2004/5, see photo), Brazilian midfielder Gilberto Silva, and striker (and captian) Dimitris Salpigidis. They have the new hot young thing to come out of Greece, attacking midfielder Sotiris Ninis, but he has been left off the squad for this game.

Here is what UEFA has to say about Pana:

Ten Cate will aim to tighten a defence which has looked shaky in the Greek Super League, and could bring in Marcelo Mattos as extra defensive cover in midfield alongside Gilberto. Panathinaikos kicked off their domestic campaign with a 2-1 loss at AEK Athens FC, but a 3-0 win against Panthrakikos FC on Saturday has lifted morale. Giorgos Karagounis was rested for that match but will return on Tuesday, with the Dutch coach saying: “He is one of the few players we have with considerable UEFA Champions League experience. Therefore he is extremely important for us.”

————-
By all accounts, Pana will be formidable adversary, especially at home in Athens. I think we have the talent to take them, the question is, will we? In the past we have been late bloomers in Europe (when we bloom at all). Here is what Mourinho thinks about our chances:

We need a better Inter than the one in the championship if we are to win tomorrow against a team that plays well, that is full of Brazilians who are good on the ball, and that will be supported by a great crowd. Every team is motivated, everything’s more difficult in this competition. A small detail can change everything. Tomorrow I’m expecting Inter to control the game from the start, keep possession and hit our opponents as soon as possible. And I’m confident in my team.

And if he is confident, so am I.

Allora, Ragazzi, cominciamo la nostra avventura europea subito.

FORZA INTER

if you are using sopcast, just pick your feed from the myp2p list. if you were having trouble at the end, the feeds all stopped working for the last like 25 minutes i think.

Well, I just figured to use the channels on the player.

The highlight show is kinda cool though. Just watched highlights of the Roma game. The fans in the stands were pissed!

Keep an eye out for the angle of Adri’s goal from behind Ibra. The pass is simply extraordinary, and the finish is almost as good.

Adri just finished an interview with Sky. He looks and sounds like a guy who has come back from the dead (though he recognises that he isn’t yet at 100 percent).

just saw the inter highlights…looks like we really slowed down after the goal and pana had a couple of good chances. ibra’s passes were beautiful, though he again completely blew a straightforward one on one.

good win! let’s keep it up. Forza Inter.

Yes Ursus, I am one HAPPY CAMPER! This is exactly what we all needed. A convincing win (2-0 is convincing, isnt it?) with no strange calls and some truly well-played football.

    Hooray!

GB thanks for the highlights. After seeing Adriano score that goal and the reaction of the entire team was priceless. It is gonna be one hell of a year that is all I can say. Lots of firepower up front.

So the Champions League stands thus, with respect to Italian teams…

Inter and Juve full 3 pts

    Fiorentina 1 pt

    Roma 0pt.

I’m not really a Champions League kind of guy, I liked it better when it was just the League Champions in a more select tournament and the UEFA Cup was a fiercely contested tournament that meant a bit more than it does now.

However, that isn’t the case anymore, but I can still appreciate the “horse race”.

Apparently I have been banned from posting on the main page and the Lyon page.

The Lyon page blogger, called Inara has accused me of racism and apparently I am no longer welcome there.

By the way, she also stated that Italians are so corrupt that teams don’t get relegated there when they are found guilty of match fixing. Here’s the quote:

“The Marseille incident, a huge embarrassment to French football, happened over 15 years ago, and both of those teams were relegated as well (as opposed to in Italy, where teams can escape with only some deducted points). Since then, French football has completely cracked down on any sort of corruption.

I guess it’s okay to be a bigot when you are the blogger.

Oh yeah, when she said that I was being racist? She was lying about it. Can’t prove a single instance. Here’s the quote:

“Also, MAD, it hasn’t escaped my notice that you’ve been spending your evening bashing Lyon and the French on both Ted’s and Chris’s posts. The bigoted remarks have actually been started tonight by you and others (calling the French monkeys and frogs, need I go on?).”

Here’s the challenge: Try to find an instance where I called anyone a frog or a monkey.

Want another sure thing? She won’t come in here and try to defend her bullshit either. Hell, she won’t let me post on her blog disagreeing with her and proving that she has no idea what she is talking about. You think that she has the stones to actually do this?

    :)

I have no idea why I can’t post on the main page. Apparently Chris doesn’t like what I have to say either. He must agree with what Inara has to say.

By the way, this was posted by a Lyon fan. Notice how this Lyon fan make the blanket statement of all “Italians”? Yeah, not only did I not even do that, but this guy is still able to post where ever he wants. I guess Inara agrees with this guy. Since I bet he can still post on her blog.

“But the whining about the goal is just further evidence to how much Italians and their soccer fans bitch and moan and look for excuses about everything in soccer, yes even Fiorentina.”

Right, I just couldn’t post on her blog last night. Right after she calls me a racist.

    Whatever.

I hope that our morale and health as a team is high enough that we are still able to play games in practice in November and December:

Obinna news… read as rumor. I actually think that Napoli would be a great place for him to go and learn.

See, I am more comfortable with him going outside the league.

I will get a new post up tonight. I would have done it last night but we had a small dinner party (I cook) and after 4 bottles of wine, it was just so not happening.

Perhaps if they could work out one of those “gentleman’s agreements” that he wouldn’t play against Inter.

But he would be an excellent pickup for Napoli, and he does definitely need to play somewhere. The primavera just won’t work for him.

I think that Inter has plans for him when they clear out some more forwards from the Mancini era. I think that he would make a great rotation at one of the wings.

I would an Italian team so that he can get quality minutes to help him develop against top opposition and maybe even Europe experience.

Looks like he is staying for a bit (at least according to Sportmediaset:
Un altro giocatore per Mourinho: si tratta dell’attaccante nigeriano Victor Obinna. Il giocatore, che era stato ceduto all’Everton, non ha ottenuto il permesso di soggiorno e si aggregato alla rosa con la maglia numero ventuno. La squadra si è allenata in due gruppi: chi ha giocato martedì ha svolto un lavoro di recupero. Allenamento a parte per Jimenez, Maxwell e Stankovic con il serbo che si ha svolto un lavoro aerobico sul campo e in palestra.
