Match Background
In case you needed reminding why we needed to get rid of Burdisso and why we need to get rid of Vieira
Inter and Cagliari have met 37 times and we have a 9-16-5 record against them in Serie A. The last meeting took place the week after we locked up the league title and Cagliari won 2-1 at home. The score line read: 8’ Ibrahimovic, 34’ Cossu, 71’ Aquafresca. Both teams have undergone some changes for, as far as I know, only Cossu will be on the field tomorrow from that scoreline. Our best result against Cagliari in the Championship was 0-3 in 1990 thanks to a hat trick from Klinsmann.
Inter
Mourinho named his squad of 19 for this game today:
Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 21 Paolo Orlandoni.
Defenders: 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Lucio, 13 Maicon, 25 Walter Samuel, 26 Cristian Chivu, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Ricardo Quaresma, 8 Thiago Motta, 10 Wesley Sneijder, 14 Patrick Vieira, 19 Esteban Cambiasso.
Strikers: 9 Samuel Eto’o, 22 Diego Milito, 45 Mario Balotelli.
I would anticipate the 4312 formation. Cambiasso is called up, but I would think that he’s going to be held out of this game. Also, none of the youth players were called up. If were up to me the team would look like this:
12 Julio Cesar
13 J. Zanetti 2 Cordoba 6 Lucio 4 Santon
7 Quaresma 5 Deki 8 Motta
10 Schmujcko
22 Milito 45 Balotelli
But I think that the team will end up looking like this:
12 Julio Cesar
13 Maicon 6 Lucio 25 Samuel 39 Santon
4 J. Zanetti 5 Stankovic 8 Thiago Motta
10 Schmujcko
22 Milito 9 Eto’o
Team Quotes:
Mourinho
After three consecutive league matches at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Inter fly to Cagliari this afternoon ahead of Sunday’s Serie A Week 4 meeting with Massimiliano Allegri’s Cagliari at the Stadio Sant’Elia – the first of three matches in seven days.
“Until now we have played three championship matches in a month, and now we will play the same number in just one week,” said José Mourinho, whose Inter side entertain Napoli in midweek before their away match against Sampdoria next weekend.
“We are at the start so we still don’t need to rotate many players but I will have to manage the situation of those who played with their national teams, in the Champions League, and who now face three games with a two-day break in between.
“I think every team involved in European competitions should be protected so they can be in the best possible condition. Unfortunately, we are a bit unlucky. The calendar is not in our favour. On Wednesday we face Napoli, who play today in Serie A Week 4 while we play tomorrow. In the same way, a team like Juve that is playing for our same objectives, play on Saturday and Thursday while our games are on Sunday and Wednesday.”
“I think that every club playing in the Champions League needs protection. In the other countries they all play early games, whether they are playing in Europe on Tuesday or Wednesday.”
Esteban Cambiasso has made a lightning quick recovery from injury and is an option for the midfield against Cagliari. “I don’t know if he will be on the pitch from the first minute; for now I can just say that Esteban and the entire medical sector, including the two fitness coaches who followed his recovery, have done a spectacular job,” said Mourinho, who added with a smile: “I’m not sure if Julio Cesar can play tomorrow. He had a lot to do during the game against Barcelona and I think he needs to rest. He touched the ball three times on Wednesday…”
The Inter coach also spoke about Mario Balotelli during his pre-match meeting with the press: “I have to point out that he is a weapon that you use as you like. After the match he played with the Under-21s he was criticised by the press and Casiraghi had to intervene to defend him. A few days ago you said he should be a starter against Barcelona. Luckily, I laugh about it, continue on my path and remember that in their last two Champions League matches Inter have played against the last two European champions. Balotelli and Santon in the starting lineup tomorrow? Both of them or neither of them.”
José Mourinho ended today’s press conference by revealing his plans for the evening: “I don’t know if I will watch the Juventus match. It depends on the chef…”
Cagliari
According to La Gazetta dello Sport Allegri has called up 18 players:
Goalkeepers: 22 Marchetti, 24 Lupatelli,
Defenders: 15 Marzoratti, 13 Astori, 21 Canini, 31 Agostini,
Midfielders: 5 Conti, 4 Dessena, 8 Biondini, 7 Cossu, 20 Barone, 10 Lazzari, 18 Parola, 16 Sivakov
Forwards: 23 Larrivey, 27 Jeda, 32 Matri, 9 Nené
Their probable formation:
22 Marchetti
15 Marzoratti 21 Canini 13 Astori 31 Agustini
4 Dessena 5 Conti 8 Biondini
7 Cossu
23 Larrivey 27 Jeda
Team Quotes:
Allegri
“We’re up against one of the strongest squads in Italy and in Europe,” Allegri told the club’s official website cagliaricalcio.net.
“We’ll have to make the most of the opportunities that we create, but above all give a good performance.”
After a phenomenal season last year in which the Sardinian side finished 9th, their coach knows that a difficult encounter lies ahead. However, he also knows what it takes to beat the Nerazzurri, as the Rossoblu ran out 2-1 winners in this fixture last term.
“We must ensure that we keep them away from our goal, otherwise they will be trouble. We have conceded lots of headed goals in these three games,” he added, before announcing his team.
“[Federico] Marchetti in goal, then [Lino] Marzoratti, [Michele] Canini, [Davide] Astori and [Alessandro] Agostini as the four defenders. In the midfield are [Daniele] Dessena, [Daniele] Conti and [Davide] Biondini. [Andrea] Cossu plays as trequartista, with Jeda and [Alessandro] Matri up front.
“We know that the whole of Sardinia wants a great game, but the fans must also give us a hand – particularly in the difficult moments,” he concluded.
Conclusion
Despite their decent showing last season in Serie A, Cagliari probably has the talent of a lower half of the table team which means that this is a must win game for us. However, this is one of those teams that usually gives us some problems (see also, Atalanta) – consider the high number of draws in this series – and it’s one that we need to win to keep pace with Genoa, who look like they honestly believe in themselves this season, and Juventus.
But there are dangers ahead. We wore ourselves out on Wednesday against Barcelona and we had a very important game against Parma the Sunday before. These upcoming 2 weeks is going to test our depth as we have 4 League games and 1 Champions League game in 14 days. We might still be able to bounce back for this game, but I am very skeptical that we will be able to hold this pace for 2 more long weeks… and incorporate a long trip to Russia as well. Stay posted.

no jo we really were quite awful. I totally agree with you on how overly critical people are of this team but we were pretty bad today. For once the media’s criticism of us was not completely exaggerated. Maicon and Santon were shadows of themselves, while sneijder really looked awful, balo once again demonstrated his arrogance and his inability to finish sitters. Eto’o and Milito were absolutely key for us as they were the only players who seemed to be doing anything. But whatever, as long as we dont play like that for every game in the season then im fine with the result. I woke up to watch the match and saw that we were trailing and I was like “Shit i had a feeling that this might happen to us” and then I went back to sleep and for a second I thought we had lost and I was prepared to let out a huge “GODDAMIT” because i went on a site that said we had lost but then i read it again and it was only the halftime report and then i looked on another site and saw cagliari 1-2 inter!!!!! And then: OH FUCK YES!!!!!! THANK FREAKING GOD!!!!!!! lolz. No our defending was horrendous and we looked really susceptible on counterattacks and crosses. Cagliari could and should have equalized on a number of occasions, but HEY these are three massive points for us. And the sant elia is by no means an easy place to get a result. The true test for us will be the next 3 games because we face napoli and samp both quality teams and then we have the champions league match in russia which is going to be way easier said then done. Hell I dont give a shit how we play in russia as long as we bag the points. We need to beat those teams to keep pace with barca if we even hope to have a chance of winning the group.

BAD NEWS: Thiago Motta out one month!!!
from fcinternews: Thiago Motta will miss at least 7 games: Inter-Napoli, Sampdoria-Inter, Rubin Kazan-Inter, Inter-Udinese, Genoa-Inter, Inter-Dinamo Kiev and Inter-Catania.

Very bad news about Motta….. Looking at cambiasso in yesterday’s game, he surely needs at least two games with 60+ minutes to be near to his capabilities. And we have Napoli, Sampdoria.
I hope Muntari gets going…. it’s high time now. Even ramadan is over now…… c’mon Muntari this is the time to prove that you are worth the pennies.
I think if Muntari can be back in form, we may be able to somehow manage the situation, otherwise….. get ready for boring draws at Champions League away games at the least…..

I’ve still got faith in Muntari. I think he’ll have a much better game on Wed. But as far as bringing Adriano back…that boat has sailed and I’m glad it has. What’s the saying again? 6 strikes and you’re out?

Btw did you guys see highlights from Sampdoria – Siena?

Thanks for the link Darjan.
Anyone who remembers Sampdoria v Inter in the Coppa Italia knows what Cassano can do with the ball at his feet.
My proposal: Send Vieira packing, move SilentJ to midfield (Stank as his backup), and put Cassano in the hole. Just think about a midfield three of SilentJ, Cambiasso, and Motta…with our strikers…CL here we come.

Thats good Sandro because im pretty sure i was having about as constructive a conversation with Vinod as possible, but yeah you can come in and act like the typical Sfinterista all you want, it’s your place after all.
And “hate all you want”- Thanks, i will, but i appreciate your permission all the same.Posted from

Speaking of personal insults…I notice an interesting lack of rage on this board about the racist chants against Balotelli this weekend, when it was full of anti-Juve diatribes 4-5 months ago. Is it an issue only when your rivals do it?

That’s because it hasn’t been confirmed by any source, Alessio. Like I mentioned earlier, I didn’t notice any racist chants, but I assumed that was because I used a crappy stream. But no other report has come out since the game regarding this.

Johonna, I hadn’t thought of Milan at all, actually. I still like Adriano, and I hope he won’t put us through the pain of seeing him in a Milan jersey. Moratti does have a thing for players who’re capable of that X-factor, but somehow he always puts his faith in the wrong ones. Ronaldo, Recoba, Adriano… All awesome players, all capable of being the world’s best on their day, all went horribly wrong.
SS, I totally agree, and there might even be the chance of that happening. If by December, Cassano still hasn’t got called up to the Azzurri, he’ll think about moving to a big club to get European exposure and prove he can do what he does on the grand stage. In one interview, Moratti said that he likes Cassano, and knows he’s an Inter fan, but Mourinho didn’t want him. Mourinho, on the other hand, said that if he sees Cassano playing as a true trequartista, he’ll push for a move in future.
So the cards are all laid down for a move. Since Samp isn’t competing in Europe, that makes things a lot easier for us. And a midfield of Sneijder – Cuchu – Motta with Cassano supporting Milito and Eto’o sounds orgasmic-ally good…

I wouldn’t get hopes up about Cassano…he won’t be cheap, and unless our season starts to go horribly downhill, I just don’t see Moratti et al shelling out.
The racist chanting was definitely audible on my stream. It is absolutely unacceptable. Soccernet says Moratti has come out with a statement and I don’t doubt it. I think the media is more prone to ignoring it because it’s not Juve, but in my mind it’s equally disgusting.

hey alessio i couldnt hear any racist chants and the cagliari president said he couldnt hear any either. But if they were you can be assured that I will be fully for punishment against the cagliari fans as I would with any team who shouted racist chants at any players on any team. This kind of thing really does need to stop particularly in italy because it gets so much press and does little for italy’s already tarnished football reputation in Europe. The sad reality is that these things occur all over Europe and most definitely in England but sky sports and the other british media do their best to make sure that no one knows about it so that their reputation as “the best, safest league in the world” (absolute bullshit if you ask me) gets ruined.

For the record, Alessio, I am outraged. Cagliari should be sanctioned. It is absolutely deplorable on every level. Cagliari fans should be ashamed of themselves. Under Lega Calcio rules, the game should have been suspended.
I didn’t see the game and only really had time to read any of the press following the match last night so I have not had time to comment.

Kabir.. Cassano actually has a buyout clause less than 20 million Euros. I believe it is 19 million to be more precis. So in other words, he is not that expensive at all.

19 million is nothing to laugh at, it’s more than we’ve paid for anyone in the last few years. And if we’re going strong, I just don’t see Moratti dropping that on Cassanno. But he does have a crazy streak (Pirlo for Guly…wtf), so I guess one can never be sure, but I certainly won’t be holding my breath.

Do none of you read the Gazzetta? Mourinho, Moratti, and Cagliari’s president have both talked about it.

well you guys we should all be overjoyed because we will see how good of a team we really are in the upcoming matches. We will not have motta but thats ok. We will be facing real teams like samp, udinese, napoli, dinamo, genoa, and rubin kazan. We have to go to genova twice in a matter of weeks which does suck. The match against samp for me will be the true test for us out of these matches because for me they are the form team in serie A right now, genoa are also pretty good but lost to chievo this weekend, it has never been easy for us to play at the marassi. But then lets remember we have two important home games against other quality sides like lazio and udinese and we really need to win both of those matches. The champions league matches will be a different kind of “difficult”. They will be tricky difficult, tricky because you never know what a team like dinamo might do and given our tendency to underperform against the smaller european sides it anything could happen. These are matches that we simply must win and in order to do so we cannot play like we did against cagliari again.

Yep. It truly is terrible. Lets see, last year it was defensive players, the year before it was midfielders… I sense a pattern emerging.
I guess that means we get to see Vieira again. Yikes.

Show some optimism, it could mean Krhin as well… At least Cambiasso has almost recovered, and Muntari’s done with Ramadan.
