Preview: Inter – Parma

Overview

The last time Parma came to the San Siro to play Inter was way back in January of 2008. That game was a real nail-biter, with Parma leading us until the last few minutes of the game. The winning goal only came in injury time (from you know who). It shows that now, just as then, Parma are not an easy team. They have a team populated with youth players on loan, hungry to show they are ready to “come home.” Parma will be scrappy and attacking, and fast. They will bring the game to us and I hope we are ready for them because these three points are necessary.

Here are the highlights from that January game. Hopefully it wont be quite so foggy this Sunday:

Us

We had as many as 15 players go away for the international break. The squad should return pretty confident – minus Javier who had to suffer defeat this past week – if a little worn out. Mario, Lucio, Cesar, Maicon, Muntari and Eto’o in particular had a pretty good break.

Mourinho earlier today talked about our injury situation. Cambiasso starts working with the squad on Monday, Arnautovic is close to top condition and there is nothing seriously wrong with Materazzi.

Very good.

Mourinho had nothing but good things to say about Parma. He talked about their experience from the coach to the players and how they will play their game. This match, says Mourinho, is the most important one and the game against Barcelona coming up will not influence his choices. In fact, he says that he’s not of a mind to rest anyone.

20 players will be called up:
Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 21 Paolo Orlandoni.
Defenders: 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 4 Javier Zanetti, 6 Lucio, 13 Maicon, 25 Walter Samuel, 26 Cristian Chivu, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: 7 Ricardo Quaresma, 8 Thiago Motta, 10 Wesley Sneijder, 11 Sulley Muntari, 14 Patrick Vieira, 15 René Krhin.
Strikers: 9 Samuel Eto’o, 18 David Suazo, 22 Diego Milito, 45 Mario Balotelli.

La Gazzetta dello Sport sees the formation:

4-3-1-2

12 Julio Cesar
13 Maicon 6 Lucio 25 Samuel 4 J. Zanetti
14 Vieira 5 Stankovic 8 Thiago Motta
11 Muntari
45 Balotelli 9 Eto’o

I think it’ll be:

12 Julio Cesar
13 Maicon 6 Lucio 25 Samuel 4 Santon
4 J. Zanetti 5 Stankovic 8 Thiago Motta
10 Schmujcko
45 Balotelli 9 Eto’o

Mourinho already said that he wasn’t going to rest anyone. Deki appears to have an 11th hour flu and who really knows how injured Schmujcko was last weekend. He did play midweek, if I remember correctly – he scored, didn’t he? But this would be the guy who gets rested if anyone does.

Them

I had thought that the Parma Offsides was up and running but a second look shows that it stopped posting in July. Fair enough then…

Although Parma is a team with prestigious past (2 UEFA Cups, 1 Supper Cup, 3 Coppa Italias), it has also been checkered and Parma has spent many years yo-yo-ing between the divisions. As such, Inter and Parma have only met 18 times at the San Siro. Of those, Inter have won 11, drawn 6 and only lost 1. So far, Parma have had a pretty good start, drawing Udinese on opening day, then beating Catania on matchday 2. In both cases, Parma opened the scoring, and with young talents like Daniele Galloppa and Alberto Paloschi on their roster, they will be dangerous.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport this is the Parma probable formation:

4-4-2

83 Mirante
5 Zaccardo 2 Panucci 24 Paci 6 Lucarelli
15 Dellafiore 17 Morrone4 Mariga 14 Galloppa
20 Biabiany 43 Paloschi

Some names here might seem familiar. We had a quick meet-n-greet with Biabiany earlier this week and found that he is a youth product of ours. Dellafiore was an Inter youth player as well, before we sent him out to Palermo with cash for Fabio Grosso in 2006. We sold Grosso to Lyon the very next year and Palermo has sent Dellafiore out on loan every year they had him except the first season. It’s hard to find a winner in that deal. Panucci was a player here for a year and was relatively anonymous.

As a newly promoted team, Parma has nothing to play for other than 17th place. I expect that they will try to beat us on the run, like Bari tried to do.

Where to watch:

This will be a good test of the team and just the thing we need to get us ready for Barcelona on Wednesday. Hopefully, the boys will be able to concentrate on the game at hand and not the one coming up.

In case some of you don’t remember, Johonna is out of town this week. This is the first of her mini-posts. Let’s make sure that we keep her and her family in our thoughts or prayers.

Inter’s only problem is Vieria. He is absolute rubbish and constantly does more harm than good…

I know Eto’os goal was mostly a solo effort, but is it really any coincidence that the very minute Vieria comes off the pitch we score? I mean c’mon, I respect Mourinho copiously, but Vieria is one tactic I will just NEVER agree with..

You know, this is what happened in this game. Inter played to the level of competition and a lesser / underdog team will come to the Meazza and with a defensive and not to lose mentality. It was expected, at least I was.

First half, Inter were sluggish. They were uninspired and the passing was far from great. Let’s give Parma credits. Even though their attacking game was absolutely **** (except a couple runs from an Inter player, who is on loan at Parma, Biabiany), but defensively they were very solid. Their defenders beat up Inter’s strike force the entire half, especially Eto’o. Eto’o needs to be more physical. Milito had an average at best game. His first touch and decision making were non-existent. Although Eto’o and Milito didn’t have a good first half, but we did manage to get a couple of shots and chances. The best chance was probably the shot from Sneijder but Mirante (Parma’s keeper) made even a better play with save. Seconds later, Milito missed a sitter from 3-4 yards out. Overall the first half was not at our best.

In the second half, you can clearly see Inter play with great intensity and urgency since we needed to win to keep our momentum going for the big game vs Barca. Subbing Balotelli in the game was the game changer move for today. The guy was incredible, sensational, and all the postive adjective that you can think of. He gave us much needed energy, and creativity and he was one of the best players. The guy was just fantastic even though he had that blunder trying to do too much one on one with the keeper.

Khrin: I was very impressed with him during the World Soccer Challenge in the summer and in all of our pre-season games and today he was very good. He seemed extremely calm for a professional game just like any veterans out there. The guy is promising.

Maicon: He was relentless pushing up but there is no question that he was bothered with his less than 100 % ankle.

Vieira: Dude showed up and had a decent game. A decent game is my expectation for Vieira at this point of his career.

Zanetti: Our 36 year-old manchine is still running great. Extremely active the entire game. Don’t know if he can keep doing this with his National team duty. The latest rumor is Maradona could exclude Zanetti for the next international break.

Lucio: Was good. But he is making me nervous everythime he touches the ball. One of these days, he will give up the ball in front of Julio Cesar and costs us a game. I can feel it.

Overall, good, hard earned victory for Inter. Hopefully we still have the energy to welcome our old friend Ibra back on Wendesday. it’s Barca, I think we will.

Balotelli was simply magnificent today, except for that stupidity on the 1 on 1 in the end. He could’ve had a hattrick of assists if Sneijder had converted that shot from 6 yards right after Eto’o’s goal.

I don’t know why Motta came off and Vieira stayed on. Maybe I missed something, but wasn’t Vieira the one who was misplacing half his passes, getting caught out of position? He had a few bright spots, I agree, but I didn’t think Motta made as many mistakes.

Also, I continue to be impressed by Krhin – the kid really knows his game. He was an asset both defensively and offensively. Another midfielder would have botched up the counter attack that led to Milito’s goal by attempting to move the ball forward asap. Not this kid, he made sure he didn’t give possession away first, and then sent Balotelli on his way. Its pretty clear Mourinho instructed him to cover the back rather than push forward, but I saw him make some great link up play too. Its crazy to expect any minutes for him against Barca, but I hope Mourinho starts him sometime after that game.

My heart was in my throat about Maicon for a long time after his second fall on the same ankle. Mourinho could’ve afforded to take him off sooner. Santon, like khalid pointed out, was a little shaky in the start, but grew well. He’s really like having an extra midfielder, supports the attack pretty well, and has the dribbling ability to create havoc. Chivu does offer more solidity at the back though. Lets see if Santon’s made his case for Barca well enough.

Darjan, he came off around the 40th minute with a thigh injury. Preliminary estimations are around 20days. I think we’ll be ok though, he didn’t play well yesterday and we’ve got depth.

MAD do a right up for barcelona!!!!

these are my projected line ups for wednesday’s match: Barcelona 4-3-3: Valdes, Dani Alves, Puyol, Pique, Abidal, Xavi, Iniesta, Toure/Keita, Messi, Ibra, Henry/Pedro.

Inter 4-3-1-2: J. Cesar, Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Santon, Zanetti, Stankovic, Motta/Muntari/Vieira/Krhin, Sneijder, Milito, Eto’o.

Despite what those arrogant barcelona players may think we have the potential to shock them and they should at least respect us for that alone. The one kind of team I cannot stand is a team who likes to arrogantly boast about how good they are and I hate how ibra does that considering how he played no part in any of their triumphs last season and im sure they would have done just fine without him. Oh and by the way barcelona i would sign robinho if i were you because he is much younger than henry, has pace, and has a tremendous amount of dribbling skills. Hes also a great finisher. You could just swap henry for him cuz he doesnt look too happy in Manchester now that all the brazilians are gone.

You guys seem to have the attitude that Barca are the favorites in the upcoming game and that Inter are underdogs. The way I see it – Inter have a pretty lethal front four combo (Sneijder, Eto’o, Milito, and Balotelli), Barca’s defense is its weaklink, and Valdez the goalie is at best third choice for Spain (does he even have any caps). physical defense slows down Barca. I see the game being pretty evenly matched.

Thanks for the kind words, Shingai, but to put it simply, Barca are a monstrous team. You’re right that their defence is their weak link, but it remains to be seen if we can even reach that far. Their midfield is from another planet, and they’re made up of guys who’ve been playing together since their youth team days.

One consolation is that at least they won’t park the bus like the smaller Serie A teams, so we should have a little more space than we did against Parma. Another consolation is that their attack may not be in prime form – Ibra certainly isn’t, Messi has faced the brunt of the aftermath of Maradona’s mishaps, Iniesta played this weekend for the first time since the CL final after niggling injuries. I’m scared of Henry, the man raped us when Arsenal came to Milano one horrible CL evening. However, he’s not looking too hot either right now.

As of now, I’m cautiously optimistic we can pull off a result, but for me, anything more than a draw will be a huge bonus.

The midfield is key to Barca’s lethal attack. INTER is a better balanced team and could easily use this to their advantage. Our midfielders need to be smart and be stronger than them in work rate. The one thing that I am anxious about with the new look INTER is that so far for the season we’ve been getting off to somewhat of a slow start. It is taking us at least on average 15mins to get into our rhythm. With all the new faces, I guess this can be the reason and over a matter of time we would have this resolved. Mourinho is a brilliant tactician and I am confident that he knows exactly what it takes to beat Barca.

Mickey, Barca players are anything but arrogant. You never hear Xavi, Iniesta, or Messi say “I’m the best” or “You can’t beat us”. Guardiola would never allow that because that is not what he is about and neither is the club. There will be no Mourinho-like statements from him. Just think if your team had won the treble last year… Mourinho sets the tone… he would definitely make cocky remarks that will in turn make it alright for the team to make cocky remarks. Please find me a quote of Pep or any other player besides Ibra “arrogantly boast about how good they are.” You will never find it, mickey. Please don’t make up things.

How are Inter more balanced than Barca, Dale? Just curious.

People talk about Barca’s D being weak, something I disagree with, but, if the midfield has all the possession, it is hard for teams to reach our back four. If Xavi and Iniesta are on the field together, expect to see very little of the ball. In terms of work rate, our midfielders will never stop running. I’m not worried about being outworked.

Vinod, I would note that Messi scored on the weekend, something that has done his morale a world of good. I have no doubt he will be 100% focused come Wednesday. There is no time to sulk.
