Roma v Inter – Nella Bocca del Lupo
By: Johonna | October 17th, 2008
Where: Stadio Olimpico, Rome
When: Sun, Oct 19 2008, 20:30 (11:30am pacific; 2:30pm eastern)
How to Watch: “live” on Fox Soccer Channel or find a stream here
Here we go, back to the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. I think it is safe to assume that this will be a take-no-prisoners, burn-and-salt sort of game. I will be surprised if both (or either) team ends with 11 on the field after 90 minutes. Both teams want a win, and depending on how you look at it, need a win. Inter, to prove they are still the force they were last season, and Roma to kick start the season and give the squad some confidence before their game with Chelsea. Right now, Roma have been backed into a corner and I have no doubt they will come out fighting on Sunday.
How about a little walk down memory lane to get us in the mood. Here is Roma – Inter from last fall.
I have no idea what Giuly was thinking, but I will take a 4-1 win any day (of course, 4-0 is always better).
LINEUPS AND JUNK
Inter have thier share of injury woes this season, and then some. Right now the list stands at:
Jimenez, Figo, Rivas, Maxwell, and Vieira
Add to that Materazzi, Chivu, Burdisso and Samuel who may or may not be availabe and you can see the problem. Basically, our choices for defense are Maicon, Cordoba, Zanetti, and our two Primavere, Mei and Santon. Here’s hoping Chivu and Nico are really ready to play.
Everyone has been speaking about the upcoming game, starting with Moratti who came to visit training today. When asked about the game and Roma’s position in the table he said:
Roma could even be more aggressive against us because they haven’t won well their last matches. They need points to show their strength. It will be an even harder match than in past years.
Whereas Mourinho, after lamenting over our injury problems in defense, had this to say:
I think Roma are a wonderful team with the stability of a coach who has worked with the same players for many years. They’re just going through a bit of instability at the moment, they had to change tactical system because the results weren’t the same, and they didn’t have Totti. Our team has had injuries and suspensions but there’s a certain stability on the pitch. We’re very stable because we know where we have to get to. We just need to work with tranquility.
Chivu and Mancini are looking forward to returning to the Olimpico in black and blue, and Júlio César has been joking with Doni and Juan while on international duty in Brazil about Inter and Roma’s relative position in the table. So, everyone is in high spirits.
Sunday’s lineup depends on exactly who is and who is not available. the Corriere dello Sport thinks Chivu is ready and the lines may go like this:

–
–
Spalletti has already said that Totti will play 45 minutes for Roma and I bet both Quaresma and Balotelli see some play time for Inter. Hell, we may even see Cruz or Samuel on the pitch. Quaresma is on his way towards a match ban – he has collected too many yellow cards and if he gets one tomorrow, he is out for Genoa.
Besides the defense, I am also worried about Cambiasso and Zanetti. I watched Argentina’s games this past week, and frankely, Zanetti needs a rest. Dont get me wrong, I love our captain, but, well, he was just not all there against Chile, and really, neither was Cambiasso. I am hoping that they will be better now that they are back home with their families and such, but with Vieira out there is really no one to step into Cuchu’s role. Right now, Inter’s fabled depth is about 6 inches.
WHO TO WATCH
–> Totti. I will be interested to see if the sun really does shine out of Totti’s behind as has been reported. Right now, his absence is a great excuse for an under-performing team, but if he fails to bring home the points, what does that mean for the rest of the season?
–> The new young guns. I hope that Balotelli will get a little field time. Both he and Aquilani had great international breaks and now it is time to see if they can do it in league play too.
–> DDR. Daniele de Rossi has been carrying Roma (and the Azzurri) for two months. How long can he continue before he just drops in exhaustion?
–> Ibra and Adriano. Can Ibra really bring it when it counts? Is he finally over his tendency to “check out” when games are not going his way? Is Adriano really on the way back to optimal form? Has the Emperor returned (man, I sure hope so)?
________________________________________
So, to recap, on one side is a team with a killer attack and no defense to speak of, and on the other, well, there is a team with a killer attack and no defense to speak of. This game will come down to luck and determination. Unfortunately, neither team can lay sole claim to either. I think we will win, we have in the past and the boys are up for it. Still and all… Roma need this, Roma need this a lot. I cannot help but think that a draw is more realistic.
Ragazzi, ho ancora il sogno di tre punti di Domenica.
Forza Inter
Here is the call-up list. Cripes, we are bringing one of the babies along:
Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Maicon, Samuel, Chivu, Santon.
Midfielders: Zanetti, Stankovic, Dacourt (?!), Cambiasso, Muntari, Mancini, Quaresma.
Strikers: Ibrahimovic, Cruz, Adriano, Obinna, Balotelli.
Poor Crespo – left home again.

honestly, on thing we havent spoken about for the night is how fantastic dejan played. he looked like deki of old tonight and was a sight for sore eyes. i was overwhelmed when he scored, not because he scored in an important match, but because he’s a player that is really close to my heart. forza DEJAN!

True. I was/am very happy for Deki. He has really been putting in the work and it shows. He wants to stay at Inter and he wants to play. It just goes to show how much dedication that he has to the team that he is back in form. Now, if only Crespo would figure this out…

He seriously looks like he’s gonna puke in that picture, Johanna, have you ever seen someone’s cheeks so big?!

OOOOLE OLE OLE OLEEEEEE
INTERRRR INTERRRR!!!!!!!
That was brilliant today. WOW! Perfect timing for La Beneamata to break out of the goal scoring slump.
Completely domintaing today and they completely outclassed Roma. Beautiful goals, all for of them!
I loved every minute of it and will probably watch the game again at some point tonight.
And who was happy to settle for a draw? I knew this was coming. Roma is not half as good as Inter.
That was by far the best performance of the season. The movement, the positioning, the attacking, the defending and the keeping were firing in synch and on all cylinders.
I love the headline: FOUR-STAR INTER DESTROY ROMA.
Destory them they did and I relished every second of it. Nice to see Deki pot one finally and after Obinna’s goal I just stood up and asked, “Are you F***ing kidding me?!”
Spaletti is complaining the result was unfair. I agree 100%. It could have been 6 or 7 (I’ll even push for
goals to maybe 1 by Roma. Roma had no business out there today. With the way Inter played, neither Mexes or Panucci would have been able to change the result. Everyone was on and there were no weak links. And all this was done at their house. I loved how for long periods of time all you could hear were Inter Supporters singing!!
Shredding Roma on the way to going 2 points clear at the top of the table!! Beautiful Day!

Mexes would have made it worse, because after the first couple he would have thrown a fit and receive his walking papers making it 11 on 10.
Panucci could have done some good with his cane…

I have to agree on Stankovoic. That was a style of goal he would make for Lazio. A blazing shot from the 20 meters just off to the side.
It was also a nice touch running all the reformed Roma players out on the field. Even Dacourt.
Speaking of which, I agreed with all of Mo’s subs. Ibra out with around 25 minutes left, Quaresma and Mancini getting half a game to keep them fresh, and Stankovic who we might have to use on wednesday gets a breather.
Excellent planning ahead.

and Ibra was not offside.
The following pic was used to try and prove that he was by someone:
In this photo you can see Riise, Juan and Loria playing it right. What you can’t see is that Cicinho is playing it wrong and keeping Ibra onside. If Ibra was offside he would have been standing on the other side of the line in the shaded area.
In this case, the grass is definitely greener on Ibra’s side of the line

seriously tho, even if ibra’s goal didnt count, we have 3 more that were totalllllllllyyyyyyyy legit. lol they would have still gotten their asses handed to them

I agree MAD. The subs were used wisely. Good thign about this match is that it looked liek a training exercise rather than a match that wore them down.
Anyone get the feeling Quaresma is a bit selfish in his play? Always holds on to the ball to long and tries to score from impossible spots rather than laying the ball off and running into space. He really needs to improve his vision and his ability from 25 yards out, in toward the goal.

Haha Kirby, better late than never!

Why does Quaresma insist on hitting the ball with the outside of his boot every single time he gets it? I realize it’s kind of his ‘trademark’ and a couple of times is ok but literally every ball he touched today he hit with the outside of his boot.

So Paolo, someone brought those pictures up at the Roma board and someone else said, and I quote “anyone can draw a line.” Apparently, pictures are not good enough.

Apparently, Inter got all the bounces…Must have been a shit ton of lucky bounces for 4-0 drubbing…
Thanks for making my day btw..

Johonna, I so read those posts. I also read the post that KJ mentioned about Inter getting all the bounces. I also read others that stated if Julio Ceasr was not in goal it would be 4-4, or how they hung around and made it tough. They’d rather make up stories than deal with reality.
Hey, if they can’t come to grips with the fact that the line that “someone” supposedly drew was actually drawn by some sort of technical software, or the fact that the line shows exactly where Cicinho is on the pitch, and that the shaded area is actually the offside area… its no one’s problem but their own. They can ask for more pictures all they want… IBRA WAS ONSIDE!! If they thought they played as well as Inter and deserved to win if it werent for Julio Cesar then let them think it. The best bounces Inter got were when the ball would bounce in the back of the net behind Doni!! Those must be the tons of bounces they were talking about.
I wonder how long its going to take for them realize what we have been trying to tell them before the season started? Roma is not that good of a team and to make matters worse they have no depth. As I predicted, teams like Napoli, Lazio, Fiorentina, Udinese have been more impressive and have opened a decent gap in points over them. Roma has already lost 4 games this season and we just finished round 7. They only lost 4 games all of last season.
I wonder if they actually think they have a shot a beating Chelsea.

It is entertaining, though.
I love how they are blaming the bad start to injuries.
Good thing we don’t have those, huh.
Oh and on a side note these are the 2nd teamers we started on the field tonight:
Zanetti as a fullback
Chivu as a central defender
Stankovic as a midfielder
Obinna as a winger
Would you consider Quaresma as a starter? I would say, in the rotation.
Yep, Roma would be the only team with injuries…
Oh and Johonna, could I request a post with a picture or clip that gives back a little abuse to the Roma side considering all the shit they have been talking this week.

I’d say Chivu and J. Zanetti are regular enough that they can be considered 1st teamers.
But I agree with the sentiment. A 1-0, 2-1, 2-0 loss could be blamed on injuries. But 4-0 is just plain falling apart.

Alessio, the point is that Zanetti is a midfielder and Chivu is a leftback (or is it right), not a central defender.
The whole thing about “if Julio Ceasr was not in goal” or when the say “if it wasnt for Ibra”… Well, that is sort of the point – Inter is a better team. Why are we better? Because of players like Ibra and JC. Duh.
And then there is Maicon, and Cordoba, and Muntari, and Cambiasso, and… well, I think you get the point. People act like having squad members who actually are good at their job is somehow cheating.Posted from

You know, all summer this idiot was talking about how Roma was going to finally beat Inter this year, and I didn’t really care.
The highlight of our season is winning the Scudetto, going far into Champions League and hopefully beating Milan.
Anyway, this guy keeps going on all summer about how we stink, blah, blah, yakkity, schmackity.
He talks about how great he is and his club is… despite the fact that he personally hasn’t won a sausage and his club has yet to beat the achievements of Pro Vercelli!
He finally gets his chance to show the world how great his side is and how he was robbed last year and then he gets blasted 4-0 AT HOME!
But he wasn’t just beaten… Maicon missed 2 beautiful chances… it could just as easily have been 6-0. Cambiasso and Muntari in the midfield were suffocating. Ibra and Quaresma pushed the ball into the Roma third quickly and with nice passes.
Anyway, here’s “Curly Spaz” and his take on the game. Is this guy even watching the game, or is the glare from his head too blinding? Notice how he never mentions an unjust ruling, which we all know from last year he would if he thought it was:
“Clearly the match was decided by a couple of distractions and Inter know how to keep hold of a result. It seems a very harsh scoreline to me, as we had chances and did not take them, whereas our opponents were more clinical,” said the Coach.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic sprung the offside trap thanks to Cicinho’s error just five minutes in and doubled the advantage 90 seconds after the restart.
“The second goal was similar to the first, as we should have been more concentrated, otherwise players of this level will punish you.”

UEFA had nice things to say about us:
Inter cruise
Chelsea FC increased their goal difference lead in the Premier League by winning 5-0 at Middlesbrough FC while Liverpool FC remain level on points after two late goals gave them a 3-2 victory against Wigan Athletic FC in the latest of series of timely comebacks this season. Wayne Rooney scored twice in Manchester United FC’s 4-0 win against West Bromwich Albion FC while Arsenal FC overturned a half-time deficit to beat Everton FC 3-1.But Inter stole the Sunday headlines with four unanswered goals at AS Roma, one of five UEFA Champions League contenders to taste defeat this weekend, including Club Atlético de Madrid, beaten 2-1 by city rivals Real Madrid CF.

By the way, speaking of Champions League, if we manage to win our game against Anorthosis– and I know nothing about them or how good they are– how good can life get?
Top of league, top of group.

DONT JINX IT MAD!
I am sure Anorthosis will be hard – we will be lucky to take a point (looking around to see if the calcio gods are appeased).
