Siena 1-2 Inter: Winter Champions Again!

By: Johonna | December 23rd, 2008

Go go go Maicon
For whatever it is worth, Inter go into the break as the Winter Champions with a 6 point lead over second place Juventus. Controversy reared its ugly head again as Saturday’s winning goal was scored from an offside position. Oh well. It has happened before and it will happen again. I really dont want to get into the whole replay thing… Either UEFA or FIFA will introduce it or they wont. I am against it simply because it is a slippery slope and if the game wasn’t as spontaneous and flowing as it is now, I just dont think I would like watching it as much. That, and I loath American football so anything that makes the Serie A like the NFL would kill quite a lot of my enthusiasm for the sport. But the governing bodies will do what they will do and I will either adapt or turn the tv off.

Here are the obligatory highlights:

Really, the offside goal was the very least of Inter’s problems against Siena. Both Maxwell and Julio Cesar made some glaring errors in defense, and, frankly, the score could easily have been Siena 2 – 1 Inter. We were amazingly lucky. Jimenez was not at his best, but after such a long layoff, it is to be expected. Balotelli was also having trouble finding his groove on the pitch and gave possession away a bit too often for my taste. He wasn’t disastrous, though, and I suspect that my expectations for him are set a bit too high.

It wasn’t all bad.

Cambiasso once again showed the world how it is done. He was practically perfect in every way. Figo looks better with every game. Quaresma, when he is not getting hacked down, also showed improvement. Inter had more possession than Siena (53% to 47%) and more shots on target (7 to 2). When Siena equalized, Inter never stopped trying for the winning goal – they never settled for the draw. Or, as Mourinho said:

“I knew the limits of my team tonight but I’m satisfied with their attitude and concentration, which they kept high until the end. Winning was a great feat for us because we didn’t play well and we know it, but we still brought home three points and this was the most important thing.”

Besides the win, the best thing from last Saturday was Maicon’s double and his celebrations after.
Maicon gettin\' nekid

Mou came out and celebrated with him under the fans and picked up a little flak for it from the media (this also has the moviola):

I dont care if the press were shocked, I found it touching. I want a coach that is passionate about the game and if that means occasionally celebrating with the players, then go for it.

So, to recap:
- we didn’t play our best game but we won anyway. Hooray.
- Maicon got a little bit naked and Mourinho hugged him. Hooray.
- Inter is still on top. Hooray.

After Christmas I will have a more proper post up. I want to do a sort of year-end review type thing with player ratings and such and would love to have reader input. I have figured out how to do the polls (which was actually quite easy) so I will get one up for the dealing with the winter mercato.

But all that will have to wait. First I have to wrap everyone’s gifts and cook huge meal for tons of people.

FORZA INTER

I love that Mou was so excited. I’m totally with you on that. It shows the coach truly cares and wants to win. Being an American sports fan, I’ve never seen a coach so overjoyed with a regular season accomplishment. (Maybe thats cause seasons don’t mean crap here when half the teams make the playoffs–I’m looking at you NBA) It was just great.
On the other hand, I dont agree with the Figo love. The guy looks old and slow. Even more so than Mancini.

Finally, I’m with you Jo on the instant replay debate. I love football/soccer because its so much different than any sport America adores. Its free flowing nature is completly unlike the stop-and-go action of the NFL or MLB. Those two leagues have plenty of time to stop the game to look at a ball spot or whether the ball cleared the fence. Football doesn’t. Nobody wants 10 minutes of stoppage time to end a half. Keep it unique and un-Americanized.

Oh, Jo, how can you live in Seattle and not be captivated by the Seahawks. Granted they suck this year, but damn if I don’t watch every game hoping they rep the city well. Same with the Mariners. And I can’t wait for the Sounders to get going. Boo on the Feddie Lujenberg signing though.

E, if you haven’t worked out that this is a discussion forum and that at discussion forums people discuss things, then you are a bigger ass than Mourinho even.

There are celebrations and then there is the buffoonery of Maicon and Mourinho. If you don’t know the difference you are an ass.

As to Inzaghi, I don’t really like him as a player and never really have. If he has celebrated offside goals against Siena to win a game by running around like an idiot with his shirt off, then he’s an ass too.

That hurts. We know Zanetti will fill in at RB but who’s it gonna be at RM? Im thinking Viera. Maybe we’ll try 4-3-3

I think that our midfield, assuming we stay with 4 in the middle, will be Muntari, Cambiasso, Stankovic and Jimenez.

I think that Mourinho wants to incorporate Jimenez in the rotation, in preparation for the day that Vieira gets injured… again. Also, to see if Jimenez is worth keeping.

Last summer we said goodbye to some players (Solari, A. Cesar, Suazo, Pele). I think this season is the try-out to see who else gets voted off the island.

As ridiculous as this sounds, I would prefer to see Burdisso at rightback…don’t want to mess with the zanetti/cambi/muntari midfield right now. Stankovic in front of them, with Jimenez hopefully getting some decent substitute playing time.

Who’s going to partner Ibra up front?

Balotelli? Cruz is injured I think. Obinna would be my next choice. Crespo if we are desperate.

That does sound ridiculous Kabir, but it might work. I’d rather not change our midfield either. Nico would also have more margin for error at RB.

I think MAD is right about this one though. Stankovic can fill in anywhere and Jiminez deserves a look. If Cruz is injured Balo should start. Is Adri even an option? How did Crespo become terrible in 2 yrs? We need to sign somebody.

Crespo’s confidence is very low at the moment

Anyways if I were mourinho I’d go with a 4 3 3 but dejan has to be one of the “3″ in midfield while zanetti switches to right back RQ and mancini or jimenez ( yes jimi can play there mancini played him there a couple of times last season ) could play up top with zlatan , as ineffective as the 4 3 3 has been so far we should be able to beat cagliari with that

    happy christmas everyone!

E I hope the 4-3-3 is gone forever! We do need to find some kind of striker solution because Ibra is clearly at his best playing with a pure striker (Cruz, Adri) rather than a playmaker type (which Balotelli seems to be). I hope Adri comes back but that is unlikely and Cruz too seems to finally be fading.

Thats easy talking ofcourse. Ofcourse you’re against it, otherwise Inter’s luck = 0. Let alone last years scudetto.

in case you guys haven’t seen it, Goal.com (yes yes…it’s mostly bs) is doing a Best 50 players…the captain is 49, which is waaaaay lower than he (or He for some of us) deserves, but it’s really nice to read some of the comments. juve/milan fans are saying how great he is and one even said that he should be in the top 20!

wonder where maicon and zlatan will be…at least one should be in the top five.

    forza inter.

i was looking at some of the heat maps and it looks like cagliari plays back a little so maybe mourinho will go with the 4-2-4 with balotelli up with ibra and zanetti at right back.
