So Close We Can Taste It

By: Johonna | May 9th, 2009

Remeber when Crespo used to score goals?
What: Chievo Verona v Inter
Where: Stadio Bentegodi, Verona
When: Sunday, 3pm local time (6am pacific, 9am eastern)
How to Watch: Fox Soccer Channel or streaming (MyP2P, Justin.tv, Rojadirecta, Ustream, and ATDHE.net).
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

Ok, so maybe there is no “ancient grudge” between Inter and Chievo, but still, this game could be the one where Inter wins the Championship and I expect emotions will be flying high. Of course, that would mean that Juve beat Milan Sunday night, but stranger things have happened. It also means that we beat Chievo Sunday morning, something we have far more control over. At the beginning of the season, we fans were looking at our last few games and dreaming of our next scudetto. Unfortunately for us, Chievo has had a bit of a resurgance and are looking to be a much more challenging opponent than anyone would have given them credit for at the beginning of the season. In the last couple of months, Chievo have beaten Atalanta, Lazio, Palermo, and Siena. They spectacularly held Juve to a 3-all draw, and, since the new year, only Milan and Roma have kept Chievo from scoring. Still, we beat them this season at the San Siro as well as the last time we met them at the Bentegodi (way back in February 2007); I believe we can beat them Sunday too.

Our last trip to Verona saw goals from Adriano and Crespo and a win for Inter (2-0). Normally I would put some highlights of the game, but I just can’t find any. If anyone is interested, here is the match report. If anyone finds some highlights, put a link in the comments and I will add the video here. For now, we will make due with this lovely picture of the happy squad after our 2-0 win. Hooray.

Our last trip to the Bentegodi finished 0-2

THEM

Hopefully one of the boys over at the Chievo blog will post a preview. Samson is MIA but Mostafa has been soldiering on without him (Good job, Mostafa).

DiCarlo has called up 20 players for Sunday’s match:
Sorrentino, Squizzi, Frey, Malago, Mandelli, Morero, Mantovani, Sardo, Yepes, Bentivoglio, Kerlon, Rigoni, Italiano, Marcolini, Luciano, Hanine, Pellissier, Bogdani, Esposito, Farias.

Ooof
Hands up, who thinks Chievo will play for another 0-0 draw on Sunday?

Chievo is flying high after their 0-0 draw against Roma at the Olimpico last week. Apparently it was a tough game they were expected to lose (I didn’t see the game, so I can’t say). The fact that they shared points has the donkeys feeling confident. Hopefully this next match will see them come crashing back down to earth. I have nothing personally against the team, but the simple truth is, we have to beat them on Sunday.

Pellissier has offered up a little hint at why Chievo has managed to claw their way up from the depths of the relegation zone under DiCarlo:

“Di Carlo is brilliant. He has given that little bit extra that we didn’t have at the beginning. He has given us the determination not to give up ever right to the end, he made us understand that in Serie A it is better not to let in goals than to look to score them in order not to risk conceding more than you should.”

Wow, so… Can anyone say 9 in front of goal? I guess Chievo will be playing a highly defensive game tomorrow. Grrreeeaaat. What fun.

US

Everyone ready?

Mourinho has called up 23 players:

Goalkeepers: Toldo, Julio Cesar, Orlandoni.
Defenders: Cordoba, Maxwell, Burdisso, Materazzi, Samuel, Chivu, Santon.
Midfielders: Zanetti, Stankovic, Figo, Jimenez, Vieira, Cambiasso, Muntari, Chukwuma Obi.
Strikers: Cruz, Crespo, Obinna, Mancini, Balotelli.

The big news here is that Ibra is disqualified for this game. While he is most definitely an important member of the squad, he is not the end all and be all of the team. Mou said today:

“It is obvious that Ibra an important player for Inter, but we are a team we played against Roma without him and we made three goals, against Sampdoria and we won. We can say that without him we have won four out of six. Ibrahimovic is not just important, it is the best player of the Italian Championship 2008-2009.”

And while it is never good to loose your highest goal-scorer, Ibra’s absence may provide an opportunity for Balotelli to shine. Mou was quick to point out that Mario had his best game against Roma, another match for which Ibra was not available:

“This is the situation: for some the absence of Ibra can affect the team because there is not in the best Italian player of the championship, but perhaps for Mario, because he is not afraid to shoulder the responsibility, knowing that there is no Ibra and that the club needs everyone to give a little more, maybe this kind of responsibility, to Mario, this is good because he is a boy who is not afraid of this type of situation.”

Further, as Maicon is still injured, this game will be an answer to those who said that Inter is too reliant on Ibra and Maicon. Taking full points from this game would go some way towards silencing those critics.

There are some surprises on the call-up list: Joel Chukwuma Obi, a primavera player who has been training with the first team this week; and the inclusion of Muntari and Chivu. Both have been training separately due to small injuries, and I think their fitness will be evaluated on Sunday. Mourinho did say that he is unlikely to play both Muntari and Chivu, but will probably start one of them. My personal bet is on Muntari.

Ok, so where does that leave the squad? I have to admit, I dont really know. This is the part of the preview that I hate the most. I am never right and I hate trying to read Mou’s intentions.

Tell you all what, this can be the reader participation portion of the blog: Who do YOU think Mou will play tomorrow?

(as an aside, La Gazzetta has changed the format of their web page and I dont like it – not at all!)

Ok, so tomorrow could be the big day – the big Number 17 day. Still, it is important that we dont lose our heads. For now, we should look only to our own result and leave the rest to fall where it may. Much like Mou, I cannot bring myself to cheer for Juve. When asked today if it would be wrong to say that tomorrow he will cheer for Juventus, Mou answered: “Yes, it would be wrong, completely. Why would I cheer for Juventus?”

We cannot look to others to win this scudetto for us. No, our fate is firmly in our hands and it is up to Inter to win or loose this championship on the pitch.

Abbiamo quatto partite fare sei punti. Credo che su Lunedi, abbiamo solo bisogno di tre.

FORZA INTER

On a personal note, I would just like to take a moment to thank the Offside Community. This month marks a year that I have been blogging for Inter. I know that we have not always gotten along, but as a whole, I think the people who congregate on the Offside and on the Inter Board specifically are a great bunch of people. Thank you all for coming back here day after day and contributing. Oh, and for putting up with my occasional beefcake photos and slight Julio Cesar obsession.

Grazie Tante a Tutti!

Now everyone, throw your hands in the air and dance around like you just dont care!

THANKS! I will look that up. Apparently, right now though, registration is closed. Either that or they somehow know it is me trying to gain access.

And really, how can anyone not think that Julio Cesar is dreamy?

And then he goes and says stuff like this:

“My deal runs out in 2012 and we are hoping to extend that. That is, as long as Inter want that too. My agent and I will meet with the club at the end of the season. I love it here and I would happily end my career with Inter.”

And I go all gooey inside.

It makes many of us, er… happy that Cesar wants to stay for as long as he can as he’s a very good player.

On another note, some have mentioned that there is something about Kaka that makes you want to hurt him. I am on record as being firmly in this camp.

Then I naturally thought: who else is in this category.

The answer came to me almost frighteningly quick:

Well after what happened last season where we had every opportunity in the world to win the scudetto before the last day but couldn’t do it I think it is right for us to only celebrate when the scudetto is ours, cuz by the time we had an 11 point lead over roma last season I was already celebrating but then over the next few months the unthinkable happened. I remember thinking that we would go out and attack siena’s ass off and we did, but we weren’t clinical with our chances. And I think that after that match I have never cussed so many times in my life before. I couldn’t believe that Roma were going to be given a shot of winning the title when materazzi missed a penalty he wasn’t even supposed to take in the first place. I honestly thought that we were going to lose it until something I did not expect happened, I thought that by the time Ibra came on it would be too late for him and even if their was time he would play like he had against liverpool. And then he ended the lupi’s title hopes, I think I must have woken up all of the neighborhood with the noise coming from my house lol. Anyways I am not willing to say that this title is ours until I see us beat siena on sunday evening. After what happened against siena last season anything could happen lets just hope that things go our way this time. FORZA INTER PER SEMPRE!!!

    MAD,
“…which means that there is a chance for 4th place to overtake 2nd… hence “breathing down [your] neck.”
breathing down your neck implys that its close. if 6 points is close, is 7 points also close? I guess milan are breathing down inters neck ROFL, douche.

“but he has a tonne of enthusiasm and works hard and thats something the backline needs”
I kinda disagree here. You guys need someone who knows what their doing. Badly – not that I am complaining. I will be interested to see what you do with Senderos. Do you send him back in disgrace or do you train him up and give yourself a little toughness.”
Yeh like Maldini has no clue and Nesta (when he comes back next year) is a rookie with no idea either right? we dont need much more experience in any position.

“In any case I can get the stats for you, I posted on the Milan Offside”
Yeah, I saw them. I got a good chuckle out of it. Before you can prove a correlation, you have to rule out other possible circumstances that could disprove your own theory first.

yeh i agree stats need to be diseminated, but i dont have the time. But i also think that the stats about Kaka-Seedorf make up a fairly large sample so you dont really need to break it down.

“On another note, some have mentioned that there is something about Kaka that makes you want to hurt him. I am on record as being firmly in this camp.”
Its cos he doesnt play for you.

** 6 points are 2 games. 7 points are 3. There are three games left. Soooo there is time to make up 6. Less to make up 7. In my opinion, “douche”, two games is not a lot to make up. 3 games isn’t a lot of ground to make up either, but it may be if you ONLY have 3 games.

“Yeh like Maldini has no clue and Nesta (when he comes back next year) is a rookie with no idea either right? we dont need much more experience in any position.”

And this is just stupid. Maldini won’t be back next season and Nesta has lost a season – and possibly more. So, yeah, actually, you will need some experience, because I bet that Favalli will be gone too.

“But i also think that the stats about Kaka-Seedorf make up a fairly large sample so you dont really need to break it down.”

And I don’t. So they mean nothing to me.

“Its cos he doesnt play for you.”

He doesn’t, but that’s not what does it. It’s the whole “I’m an innocent lamb, look at me and how godly I am… [cue the gospel singers]” right before he lies, cheats and steals his way around the pitch. Oh yeah, and tries to get a cheap shot in right before he runs away to hide. That’s pretty hateful too.

“LOL then you agree that 2 and 3 points is a big difference??”

Noooo, we were talking about 6 points, or 2 games – not 2 or 3 points… But I agree that it is funny that you made a mistake this simple. To the point I said explicitly that making up 2 games isn’t a lot when you have more than 2 games to do it in.

“And just cos Nestas been out for a season doesnt mean he forgot how to play, are you crazy?”

Again with the wonderful machine that tells the future. I wish I had one. Prove he’ll be back first and then I’ll answer you.

No, that’s why I said “Kaka”. Having trouble seeing the difference?

“At least Kaka only has problems with opposing fans. lol. Perhaps you shud take Ibras advice and just “shush”’

I guess if that’s the best you can reason – and let’s face it, Milan fans are arrogant enough to think that they can tell people what to do, like Roma fans – then I guess you have proven yourself to be like the rest of them. Fine.

Fabergas rumors are heating up. Personally, I don’t see how Real doesn’t scoop him up.

We are fighting Juventus for Quags… don’t they a ton of forwards that they are going to keep next year over there?

There’s a rumor that Moratti will offer Cruz an extension rather than see him go. Well, we all know that our owner is a nice guy, but let the guy go.

Funny, this time last season everyone said that Mourinho is a powder keg and he’s going to cause controversy and tear the locker room apart.

Take a quick look at Milan where Berlu can’t stop complaining about his coach, Roma where the players are unmotivated and Juve where the fans are protesting the clubs HQ.

Then take a look at our group and how nicely they came together last weekend without Maicon or Ibra – most other teams would fall apart if you told them theat your 2 best players would be out for a game.

The diving accusation is so stupid. Even if you do think that he does it regularly in a manner contrary to the spirit of the game, Youre wathing italian football!!! The land where every aspiring footballer learns that you do whatever it takes (diving, tactical fouls, the odd insult alla Materazzi) before they learn how to kick the ball.

If ya wanna whine about cheats and so forth perhaps you should go support a certain London club cos you obviously dont understand the culture of the Italian game.

Pat, I think we have had this Kaka argument before. What makes his diving more odious than that of other players is his squeaky-clean, What-Would-Jesus-Do persona. Plus, he is talented enough that he doesnt need to resort to those tactics.

And I have to agree with MAD about Nesta. Loosing a season to injury is never good for a player. Look what it did to Materazzi. He has never been the same after that thigh injury and the long lay-off. I will be very surprised if Nesta is able to play at his pre-injury level any time soon… if ever.

“he is talented enough that he doesnt need to resort to those tactics.”

Precisely why he gets roughed up all the time and needs to milk penalties. I agree he goes down easy but i dont think he dives. Show me a clip where he goes down and hasn’t been touched at all by an opposing player. He only goes down when he feels he has been impeded.

“What makes his diving more odious than that of other players is his squeaky-clean, What-Would-Jesus-Do persona”

Im not religious but i think its a bit rough to rag on a guy simply cos he does. And we have had this argument before, but i’ll keep defending Kaka until ive seen reasonable prrof that shows me he isnt defendable

As for Nesta. I never said he would come back and play as good as he did before the injury or even back to a level that Milan could find acceptable. MAD, said Milan needed experience in the backline and i simply pointed out nesta and Maldini as two examples of experienced defenders weve had during the last two season and we failed in both. I argued we needed someone like Senderos who burst with enthusiasm every time his on the pitch to put pressure on the other defenders to lift their effort level and to add something weve been missing on the pitch due to Gattuso’s long injury.

I bring news from the transfer market, apparently inter are interested in fabregas. That would be a great signing if arsenal ever let him go, we have a more realistic chance of signing john obi mikel from chelsea because essien is playing in his role and mourinho is a former coach of his. As you all know the media continue to link us to Diego Milito, there is no question that he would be a great league player but I’m interested in players who know how to make the difference in the champions league not just the Serie A. Unfortunately Diego looks set to join juve oh well their midfield is still shit even with him. I think we should go for mikel and buy two other midfielders and then one attacker to partner ibra, but before that happens the following players need to be marooned on a desert island where they cannot bother us with their poor form again: Burdisso, Vieira, Quaresma, Mancini, Obinna, Jimenez, Rivas, Cruz, and Crespo. And we should get robby back from Cagliari.

“You were inferring that he wouldnt be any good so you used the machine first.”

I need an interpreter. Where in this sentence did I say that Nesta wouldn’t be good?

“Nesta has lost a season – and possibly more. So, yeah, actually, you will need some experience”

The facts are that Milan – and you – are stupid if you are relying on someone who can’t stay healthy. I wasn’t telling anyone what would happen – unlike some others in this conversation – hence use of the word “possibly”, duh.

“Inter have the biggest reputation for arrogance on the peninsula so its funny to hear you say that.”

Only if that peninsula is Florida. Otherwise it’s Milan and Juventus with the swelled heads.

“The diving accusation is so stupid. Even if you do think that he does it regularly in a manner contrary to the spirit of the game, Youre wathing italian football!”

So is telling me to “shush”, but that didn’t stop some arrogant asshole. And he dives. Don’t like it? I don’t care. And I swear, I have never “wathed” Italian football in my life.

“If ya wanna whine about cheats and so forth perhaps you should go support a certain London club cos you obviously dont understand the culture of the Italian game.”

Why? There’s a Milan club that wears red and black and cheats all the time, why don’t I make fun of them? And I think that you’re right, I obviously have a lower understanding of the culture than… you, “pat cook”.
