Supercoppa Italiana
Inter v Roma
Stadio “Giuseppe Meazza” (San Siro, Milan)
Sunday, August 24 8:45pm local time (11:45am pacific; 2:45pm eastern)
Broadcast on RAI or streaming here.
Ok, so last year this tournament did not go so well for us. Inter lost to Roma 1-0 (goal by DeRossi). Still, since its inception in 1988, Inter has played for this tournament 5 times, winning 3 of them, which is not so bad (Milan have played 8, won 5; Juve 7, won 4; Roma 4, won 2).
-
{photo shows the coreografia at last year’s game}
.
Officially, this is the first game of the 2008/2009 season, and I am sure Mourinho and the gang would like to start with a bang. As we all know by now, Mourinho likes to win.
Francesco was kind enough to put up the highlights from last year’s game. I thought, instead, I would put up the highlights from the 2006 game. Same players, MUCH better outcome for Inter (Inter 4 - 3 Roma).
See, wasn’t that nicer than that poopy old game last year (although a bit long)? Alright, now that we are all sufficiently pumped, lets look at the teams.
ROMA
I wont spend too much time here, as I am sure Chris will cover this on the Roma page. Lets just say that Roma will want to win this every bit as much as Inter do. They want to show that although they did not win the Scudetto last year, they are are prime contenders this season. Also, Roma’s recent bereavement may give them that little extra oomph as they want to “win it for Sensi.” Roma have a new Brazilian forward Julio “the beast” Baptista who I am sure is looking to prove himself in the Serie A (last season he had 10 goals in 35 appearances for Arsenal) (how stupid can I be? last season he had 4 goals in 31 appearances for REAL MADRID). Like Inter, Roma have their fair share of injuries, and while it is thought that Totti will see some play time, Doni and Taddei are maybes.
INTER
Probably the biggest hurtle for Mou coming in to this game is our ongoing injury “crises.” As far as I can tell, Vieira, Chivu, Cordoba, Adriano, and Samuel are still on the injured list. Cruz and Rivas are maybes. Ibrahimovic will probably see some play time on Sunday, although I highly doubt it will be for a whole game. As for who will take his place in attack, I have not the first clue. Hopefully Mourinho’s press conference tomorrow will answer all questions.
Without a doubt, Burdisso will start. Who will pair with him is the question. Il Corriere dello Sport thinks that Rivas is a strong possibility, although Mou may decide to play Cambiasso in central defense and give the others one more week of recuperation.
The Line-Up
Assuming Cambiasso in defense and Mourinho will play 4-3-3.
JC
Maicon Cambiasso Burdisso Maxwell
Muntari Stankovic Zanetti
Mancini Ibrahimovic Figo
with the possibilities of Balotelli, Jimenez, and Pelé.
Lets hope nothing goes wrong at the back, because we are almost out of options there. I had hoped that Samuel would have made an appearance before now, but if he is not ready, so be it. Materazzi wanted to be ready for this game, but it does not look like that will happen, either.
What to Watch For
Ibra is looking to score. You could tell by his body language (and muttering) at his missed opportunities during the Benfica game, Ibra is not happy with his past performance. He needs to score. Also, although Mancini has said he will not celebrate a goal he scores against Roma (out of respect), I am sure he would like to put one in the back of the net. Jimenez and Balotelli are both looking for a starting place and will be itching to prove their worth if they take the field.
With the return of Totti and the death of Sensi this may well be an emotional game for Roma. It is clear that they will play all-out for the win. I, on the other hand, am much more concerned with player well being and the upcoming Serie A and Champions League games. We would all like Inter to make a good showing, and, if possible, kick Roma’s ass all the way back to the capital, but not at the expense of players’ health. First and foremost, I want everyone HEALTHY for the start of the season, and if to do that Roma must win, so be it. Still, I think we can totally take them. Who is up for another clean sheet?
OTHER NEWS
As part of the recovery process for those players coming off of injury, Mou has scheduled a friendly for Friday, Sept 5 against FC Locarno, a second-division team in Switzerland (obviously from Locarno).
Il Corriere dello Sport is reporting that Joãozinho (Joao Bueno de Camargo, born December 16, 1990), yet another new Brazilian wonder kid, is trying out for a few days with the Primavera team. The trial will last until August 27th when Inter will decide whether or not to pick him up, presumably for the Primavera squad.
Quaresma is still up in the air. I am starting to get a bit peeved over this and don’t want to talk about it. Suazo is still almost at Roma. Crespo is either moving to Sampdoria or Lazio. Whatever. I am so tired of “almost” this and “any day” that. August 31st will be a welcome relief.
Finalmente, la nuova stagione comincia. Prima la Supercoppa e poi il mondo…. vinceremo tutti.

Not only was the wide play creating space but it also created time for the defensively set midfielders to join the attack. Zanetti, Muntari and Stankovic/Cambiasso can all shoot as well as pass– keeping possession.
I think that you hit right on the head that the outside players- the wings and wing backs- will create massive space in the middle but also allow the defending midfielders time to join up the attack and clean up any rebounds.
By the way, this is the first time I saw this- I say SOLD!

First for me too, MAD. Double sold! we have got to clean out the closet before we get anything new.
So what do you think happened with the Roma deal? Or Benfica?

I never heard about Benfica, but I doubt there was anything to the Roma rumor. I can’t see us helping them out THAT much. I doubt that Roma could afford Suazo at this point, first of all. Second of all, why should we sell to them?

More dirty Roma tactics– Mexes can’t defend Mario so he tries to take a cheap shot at him:

Johanna, you aren’t close to being the oldest person who hangs around here . . . (and btw, you will be getting another small envelope from Milano if Poste Italiane don’t screw things up).
And I completely agree with you about the way in which ale’s survey has helped provide a context for a lot of the behaviour one sees; it wouldn’t be hard to get a couple of social anthropology papers out of the results.
I also understand where Cathal is coming from with his comment about Jose being relatively weak in reading the game (in US parlance, he isn’t a great “game coach”). Though if you watched the bench in the Suppercoppa, you will have noticed that Baresi was very active in giving instructions and getting players to alter their positioning. Neither Mancini nor Mihajlovic did as much of that in recent seasons. Also keep in mind that Javier Zanetti is massively influential on the pitch. It isn’t a huge concern for me.
Samp away will be a very good first match test.

Mourinho and Moratti is going to be critical. Mourinho has no sense of loyalty…walked out on Benfica because he wasn’t given a contract extension…walked out on Leiria after one season…walked out of Porto after winning the CL…left Chelsea after falling out with owner and now he’s at Inter, employed by a club who just sacked a league winning manager. I sense fireworks!
He is playing his favourite 4-5-1 that converts to 4-3-3 tactic. He bought some flops at Chelsea and Muntari and Mancini are average players at the minute. He inspired belief at Chelsea but yet his star man now is a man he once labelled a “donkey”. He was outclassed by Benitez and Ferguson on numerous occasions and in the Supercoppa, his team struggled to fend off weaker opposition despite dominating the game.
He is a genius…but he’s flawed, very flawed. If he wants to be a success at Inter he has to improve as a man and a coach. He has never built a team, but inherited good teams and turned them into great teams. The Supercoppa win must concern Inter fans ahead of the new season. What did you see? Did you see that belief, that will to win, that desire among the players? Did you see that Mourinho stamp on your team? I am intrigued to know. I wonder if Mourinho is an improvement on Mancini at all…

First of all, let me preface this by saying that I dont know much about football tactics.
“What did you see?”
For the first half of the game I saw a team that exploited the whole width of the field; that continued pressing even after scoring (instead of falling way back and defending); that were tenacious in defending at the half way line; that regrettably could not hold concentration for a full 90; and that need lots more work on set pieces (LOTS).“Did you see that belief, that will to win, that desire among the players?”
I saw a team that appears to be much happier now than last May. Inter is a pretty stressful place to work - just look at how many coaches we have had and how many players leave after 1 season. Still, the players seem to trust Mourinho and like his training methods - or at least that is what they tell the press. I will say that in the training photos (that are taken and published by the club so are not unbiased), players are laughing and smiling and appear to be legitimately having a good time.
.“Did you see that Mourinho stamp on your team?”
I dont follow the EPL so I dont really know what the Mourinho stamp is. I think it is very early days yet - lets play a few league games and come back to this question.“I wonder if Mourinho is an improvement on Mancini at all…”
Without a doubt, Mancini lost the trust and respect of a fair number of players when he resigned last year - whether he meant it or not. Inter finished last season by the skins of their teeth and by sheer force of will. No joy, no camaraderie, just determination. Football is football. In the end, how many different ways are there to get the ball up the field and in the net? It seems to me, that the most important thing is that the players be fit and come to the pitch with confidence in their ability and that of their teammates.Posted from

MAD, just read that Channel 4 Zanetti article and this BLEW my mind:
“I am pleased to have scored the decisive penalty,” he grinned. “It was very important. But it was the first time in my career, strictly speaking that I had taken one, not everybody knows that.”How on earth can that BE!?!
Well, for a first-timer, good job.
(also, I must say that when he made that penalty I got up and danced around the room shouting “Il Cap-i-tan-oooooo” a la Pazza Inter Amala).

Well, as far as not being able to read the game goes, I thought that bringing on Balotelli on the wing was a key substitution for the open play and for the spot kick… Mo’ could have just as easily used any of the other forwards or outside midfielders we have. He also came up with the strategy before the game to press the outside which was very key for us as well. It’s also something I don’t think we did very effectively last year.

Hey Johonna, apparently we sent the Roma blog in to quite a tizzy last night! I was laughing hard at the responses. I love how when I am amused they think that I am upset. I think that you really sent them over the edge with the spending numbers. It’s doctrine for them– guess who spread it– that we NEED to spend more then they do to be good. The minute we don’t… and we are still better than they are drives them nuts! Ahh, I love being an Inter fan.

Yes, there are a lot of excuses over there sometimes. Still, knowing that the mean age is probably something like 20, it is difficult to take them seriously sometimes. You know, when Inter play poorly I am the first to admit it. Not that Roma played poorly - that goal by DDR was amazing and they are much better at set pieces (in general). The fact is, Inter and Roma played a great game and we won (barley). No excuses. This is something to build on and I have high hopes for the season.
I just dont understand why so many of the kids over at the Roma board take it personally when their team does not win.

Romanista: “Defence wise you are screwed, I mean really screwed.”
Truer words were never said. This just in:
“Inter’s defensive crisis has taken a new twist as defender Nicolas Burdisso could be sidelined for a considerable period. The Argentine ace suffered a calf strain during Inter’s Super Cup win over Roma last Sunday and there are fears that the damage could take a while to heal.
As the injury is in a fragile area of the leg, Burdisso may need around 45 days of rest for the problem to heal fully and looks almost certain to miss the start of the new season.”
http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/aug26j.htmlThe Inter web page says that Rivas re-injured himself in the game on Sunday but that exams have been scheduled for Burdisso, but that the injury appears to be “less alarming” than the journalists think.

Should be interesting this weekend with the CB position. Cambiasso and ???. Is Rivas fit enough to play? This is crazy. What about Zanetti for 1 game back there? I;m not too woried though, Inter will get it done.

we’ll be fine. that so called Blinding, Leathal Roma attack could not muster much much against our “screwed” defense. They scored a goal that no defense can ever be blamed for and we scored an own goal.
If our defense is screwed their attack must be in shambles.

maxwell could play the middle too. he could play with Cambiasso & Zanetti and maicon at full back. Still a great defense.

I am interested to see what are starting CB duo will be when every one is fit. Samuel and Cordoba played well together last year at times.

That is def. what we are in MAD.

Hopefully, fingers crossed, Cordoba and Samuel can regain the form they had last season. One of the best games I have ever seen a central back play was Cordoba’s performance in the 1st leg match vs Liverpool last season in the CL. That is until he got injured. He put on a clinic. He is smart, fast and very good in the air. He cannot come back soon enough.

I think that the CB spot is the one that will affect the others. We had as many people playing out of position as Roma did and we still were able to dictate play.
We will need to beware the counter against a team like Samp. We can’t get sucked to far ahead looking for the kill when we have a question in the back. We can only hope for Cordoba or Chivu to come back. I agree with Paolo that if Samuel and Cordoba can be anything like their old selves, we will turn a weakness into a strength.

Burn of the year…
Someone over at the Roma blog posted a link to a video of a bunch of fans Chanting “interista Pezzo di Merda!” Those fans were Milan fans. Couple that with the photo of FDL’s “Intermerda” banner…
BBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHAH
Were we supposed to feel sorry for ourselves after that? Keep riding coat tails.
We have our main rivals. Roma are nothing to me. They can hate us all they want. They can say what they want. They can think what they want. They twist this and turn that anyway they want. They can believe in magic all they want.
It doesn’t change the fact Inter are bigger, better and badder than they are.

Isn’t it cute?
The little asshole wants to pretend that it’s human and that it can count.
The trouble is that it isn’t counting everything.
I got some more numbers for it to chew on.
23– the number of RomaFucks on the Inter board before, during and after the game on Sunday. That number includes today.
42– the number of RomaFucks on the Inter board before, during and after the Coppa Final. So, the point this twerp is making, I assume, is that I am slacking off?
