That Was Close, Too Close
By: robert | January 20th, 2008Inter(3)-Parma(2)
In the 68th minute, as a Gasbarroni free kick sailed into the right corner past Cesar, a slight amount of feces dropped into my pants. My first game as the Inter blog “manager” here at theoffside, would be a loss. All year this team has gone undefeated, and the first game I cover is going down the drain. I thought about my prediction, “Inter take this one easily, 2-0.” Well, what an ass I feel like now. Both myself and the Inter team as a whole, underestimated this Parma squad.
In the beginning of the game, under the dense fog of the San Siro, everything seemed okay. Inter had repeated attacks, and where around the Parma box for a majority of the early portion of the match. However, in the 15th minute Parma’s Morrone put a shot on goal, but it went wide right. Then in the 21st minute Cordoba brought Corradi down in the box. However the referee kept the whistle away from his mouth; this was the first of many “questionable” calls. From this point on, Inter’s play was sloppy, and even unorganized at times.
Despite their bad play, the Nerazzuri took the lead in the 30th minute. A corner from Jimenez found Cambiasso open, and with his left foot, slipped it past Bucci. “Alright”, I said to myself, “Now we’ll start playing”. My hopes were not fulfilled however, as Inter’s disappointing play continued. Finally, 10 minutes later Parma struck. A Reginaldo cross found Cigarini inside the box, and he put the ball in the right corner. There weren’t many scoring chances for the rest of the half, and the beginning of the second half. This was because Parma was “sitting back” playing for the tie, and maybe even a chance at a counter attack.
But it wasn’t a counter attack that gave me a stroke and two heart-attacks in a 3 minute period, it was a free kick. The substitute Gasbarroni, as stated in the first paragraph, put one past Cesar. To add to my long list of medical botheration’s (shitting my pants, stroke, and numerous heart attacks), Bucci made a terrific save on Cambiasso’s bid for a double in the 74th minute. But the 86th minute Couto blocked a shot with is head, supposedly. After seeing the replays, I honestly believe, it was a handball. Initially, the ball hit his head, but then his lower portion of his forearm deflected it out of bounds. Couto was sent off, and Zlatan calmly put the penalty kick in the back of net.
Parma lost their composure, and continued arguing with the referee even as they kicked off following Ibra’s penalty goal. Inter took advantage of this. A cross came from the right side (not sure from who), and the unfocused Parma defense allowed Zlatan to settle the ball with his chest and put it past Bucci for a dramatic game winner.

Analysis
Obviously, this was Inter’s worst performance of the season. They played a less talented team, with low confidence, at home. Yet, Parma still put up one of the best fights the Nerazzuri have faced all year. They seemed unorganized, sloppy, and even confused at times. We all know how difficult it is to stay undefeated, especially in professional sports. But, many, if not all of us, did not expect it to end here. They out hustled us, “out thought” us, and just out played us in every aspect of the game.
However, there are a few positives. True great teams can win even when there down and not playing at their top level. For most of this season, Inter have not had a game that had tested their heart, not their skill. What we saw at the San Siro today showed us that despite their terrific success so far this campaign, they have not lost their desire for the game. Another upside, is that we got to see both new signings for Parma and Inter, Maniche and Lucarelli. Both played okay, but you could tell that they are still getting acclimated to their new teams.
Bottom line is, Inter won. Their winning streak continues, and no matter what anyone says, they are still seven points ahead of second place Roma. I just thank God that my first game to cover wasn’t a loss. Now please, let me go, I must change my pants.
Here are the goals.

Drop of form worries me, and absense of Samuel seems to be bigger than ever. We got a month left before CL, and I hope Mancini can organize our defense until then.

when are Inter NOT going to be handed a Penlty? did someone tell the refs that Christmas has already come and gone?
damn it, this kinda results make we want to kill Inter!
I can’t believe you really think that was a penalty?!?!?!

Yes ordeal_rules I really do think it was a penalty.
As I said in my article, at first it head his head then it hit his forearm. During the game they showed numerous replays, and I feel it did hit his arm..

I feel stupid clicking every offside article to defend.
Yes, blocking a shot with a hand is a penalty.Posted from

Listen, no one has handed Inter anything. They played to the last second – which, in my opinion, is the the reason some teams win and some dont. Inter has the stamina to play until the whistle blows. Sure, parma played well, really well, but the penalty threw them and the last goal was pure inter!
Ok, some tough love. Our passes are slack, our midfield was almost non existent (except for Cambiasso), and our clearances were deplorable. We have GOT to shape up if we are going to take CL.
So when do you think Figo will come back? I sure miss him.

He returned training on Dec 17th last year, honestly I thought he’d back by now. I guess Mancini doesn’t want to risk him until Figo is 100%, since we got CL comming up. He will come back within weeks I presume.

Inter never handed anything…
Rules on Handling the ball in front of your own goal are not based on interpretation, not based on players or coaches feelings and really shouldn’t be up for discussion.
Something happens or it doesn’t happen. Too bad for Couto and Parma that what happened was he handled the ball and was the last man back. It doesn’t matter that he did not intentionally mean to handle it.
Its very rare that anyone ever INTENTIONALLY handles the ball in front of their own goal in a match they are minutes away from winning, so what he said following, “the ball hit my arm,” means nothing. He should have kept his arms tucked like you are supposed to do in front of your own goal so things like that do not happen. See what Cesar, the midfielder not the goalie, did when he cleared the ball off the line earlier in the game? apparently Couto didn’t.
Fact is this game was 93 minutes, not 75 minutes. Parma could not finish Inter off and had chances to build on a 2-1 lead. They could not deal with the pressure Inter brought and were buckling under it after they going down 2-1. They brought their best and Inter brought their worst and Inter still got the 3 points.
As for Di Carlo complaints: He should have concerned himslef more with tactics and his club than the ref. Typical explosion from the leader of a club that just melted down 4 mins away from doing the unthinkable. Of course it wasn’t his teams fault… it was the ref… it had to be.

Can’t believe you Interisti cannot accept a gift for what it is and admit that’s what it was. Also the rigore not conceded to Parma nust have helped your cause, no ?

Read the Parma post-match report. It talks about an ex-ref who explains why Couto should NOT have gotten a penalty (let alone a damn red card).

Lupo562,
If a player is called for a hand ball that deflects an obvious scoring opportunity, he MUST give a red card.

it is only a penalty if it i intentional

Thats when a player puts his hand right next to his body. How is a referee to decide if it is unintentional when player stretched his hand out like a GK? Maybe inter paid his left arm to move foward?

INTER MERDA SEMPRE.
CALCIOPOLI PARTE DUE.

Jesus. It was one lousy penalty. Get over it. And for all of you that hate Inter because they are winning and your team isnt, just remember, the hate would all go your way if your team was winning.
Refs make mistakes – they are human. They make these mistakes in every league all over the world. Why does everything have to be some huge conspiracy? If the refs are all biased towards the “big” clubs, why is Milan at mid table? Why is Fiorentina gaining on Juve? Right now Inter is winning so is under the microscope. I suspect that if you put the same level of inspection to any club’s games you would find games that were incorrect penalties given to them or against them.
And as for Calciopoli parte due, that is pure nonsense.

Listen.
If Roma were winning the way you are, we would be getting heapes of praise not being rediculed like you are(and this is by all means DESERVED)
Your team is made up of a world class DICK (IBRA) one of the dirtiest Frenchman outside of Zidane (Viera) and on the whole your the Italian version of Chelski. Outside of Mata do you have ANY other Italians that have seen any legitmate action? Or any that even sniff the Italian NT? This decade?
You don’t win with grace, you win like a bunch of amatuers, and you play ugly football.
Lets compare the praise for beautiful football La Roma gets to the comments you recieve from the press.
Being in press silence only backs this up.
We will catch you.
SOLO ROMA. ODIO INTERMERDA.

Holy Cow! What a rant. Inter was began as an international team (hence the name). No big deal. I am sorry you think Imbra is a dick – but that does not mean we cheated or are cheating to win.
Oh, and if you want to get nasty, at least our fans are not stabby like Roma’s. That sure seams a lot more ugly than whatever kind of football you think Inter plays. But I am nice, so I wont go there.

You do understand that these incidents have nothing to with the way we play football. Right?
Fan reaction is outside of anything that happens on the field. And if you think your so big and bad, do you know how it broke out? Was there a Catania tifoso e tifosi that provoked them? Or one that pulled knives as well?
You were not there so I suggest you not comment on it.
International football my ass. We play in Italy, so try getting some Italians on the squad.
We have a couple, not sure if you know who they are. Totti, De Rossi, Aquilani.
And yes tis very true. Ask Europe. Roma plays bella calcio while you get handed penalties, and are dirty as shit, with no real tactical ingenuity (see your chooch, excuse me coach). Ibra your best player a spitting image of this.
Its a wonder we have your # each year. We are obv. the better squad, but you are the more consistent.
Thats shall change.

Daniele- My memory isn’t so good, so maybe you can help.
The last time Inter played Roma was, Sat, Sep. 29 I believe. And, I think, I’m not sure, that we SPANKED YOU 4-1. How you figure you’re the better team but we beat you and are in first by seven points is beyond me.Posted from

Your memory isn’t so good eh?
Do you remember us being a man down for over 3/4 of the match?
And still have the a chance to tie.
Inter a man down against Roma?
We win by the same margin.
Punta basta.
You have gotten lucky, and gifts from the refs.
We will catch you. Dont worry

Hahaha fuck you Roma, Scudetto challengers? You got owned by Inter 4-1, and for once, they didn’t pull magical referee bullshit to get out. They also beat Milan. And Fiorentina. What’s the point? Oh yeah, twice, they couldn’t beat Juve.
